“Cruella” (Disney),” “Dune” (Warner Bros.), and “Coming 2 America” (Amazon Prime) were the big film winners Wednesday night at the 24th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards. “Cruella” designer and two-time Oscar winner Jenny Beavan won for period; Denis Villeneuve’s epic “Dune” took sci-fi honors for costume designers Jacqueline West and Robert Morgan; and Oscar winner Ruth Carter (“Black Panther”) earned the contemporary prize for “Coming 2 America.”
Held at the The Broad Stage in Santa Monica, the annual awards celebrated the best in film, TV, and short-form costume design in eight categories that spanned fantasy, contemporary, and period works. Show hosts were actors Andrew Rannells (“The Prom”) and Casey Wilson (“The Shrink Next Door”).

As of this writing, Gold Derby’s 31 Experts can’t decide who will win Best Movie/Limited Actor at the 2021 Emmys. A leading 17 of these pundits predict Paul Bettany (“WandaVision”) will prevail on Sunday night, with 13 more picking Hugh Grant (“The Undoing”) and one going out on a limb for Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton”). But I think they’re all wrong. Ewan McGregor (“Halston”) is my pick to win for playing famed American fashion designer Halston in Ryan Murphy‘s Netflix limited series. Even though the Scottish actor is a bit of an underdog at the Emmys, don’t count him out just yet. Read on to see my four reasons why I think McGregor will beat the odds.

Ewan McGregor has earned some of the best notices of his long career—and an Emmy nomination—for his lead role in Halston, the Netflix limited series about the famed American fashion designer. The Scottish actor threw himself into preparations for the performance, even going so far as learning to sew—as he told Jimmy Kimmel, he practiced by stitching pants for himself, but inadvertently placed one pocket on the inside of the garment. Given that mishap, it’s perhaps fortunate McGregor wasn’t called upon to design any Halston costumes–that was left in the capable hands of Jeriana San Juan, who is also Emmy nominated.
Deadline: It must have been delicious to portray Halston, because he was so gifted and stylish, and he could also be so catty with people around him.
Ewan McGregor: He was an amazing character to play. Absolutely wonderful to play. He really was.

Costume designer Jeriana San Juan is certainly no stranger to recreating iconic looks from decades gone by. Previous period television titles for her include “The Get Down” and “The Plot Against America.” Now, she is Emmy-nominated for Netflix’s limited series “Halston,” which spans the life and creations of the titular real-life fashion designer, from his creating a hat for his mom as a young boy to collaborating with Martha Graham just a few years before his death.
There’s always a limitation to what can be sourced from the actual time when working on period pieces, but it seems like with Halston you might be even more limited due to the made-to-order business. How did that affect your plans for the series?

The limited series “Halston” premiered on May 14 of this year, but the period drama about the fashion icon of the same name was more than two decades in the making. Series director Daniel Minahan first read a biography of the famed designer in 1996 and felt that it needed a film treatment. After multiple failed attempts to bring the project to fruition, he teamed with Killer Films co-founder Christine Vachon and superstar producer Ryan Murphy and the series found a home on Netflix.
“Halston” stars Ewan McGregor in the title role. The Iowa- born Halston first came to prominence designing high-end hats for women. After one of his hats is worn by Jackie Kennedy, Halston becomes a giant in the fashion industry, creating everything from designer gowns, to luggage and even perfume. The series is set against the backdrop of the New York party scene of the 1970s, replete with cocaine-fueled...

It took some 20 years for Dan Minahan to bring the influential but ultimately tragic life of fashion designer Roy Halston to the small screen. The executive producer/director of Netflix’s five-part series “Halston,” Minahan initially thought he would do a feature film version of the designer who came to fame in 1961 designing the pillbox Jackie Kennedy wore for the inauguration and then transformed fashion and Bff Liza Minnelli when he created the evocative, colorful costumes for her 1972 special “Liza With A Z.” But he developed a cocaine habit and spent his nights at Studio 54; his world collapsed in the 1980s.
During a Deadline Zoom conversation, Minahan soon realized Halston’s story didn’t fit into a 90-minute script. “I think the world had to kind of catch up on this story,” he noted. “When we decided that would make it a five-hour limited series, it gave us the time...

“I think people really don’t understand just quite the level of influence that he’s had on modern American fashion,” declares costume designer Jeriana San Juan about Halston, the fashion icon who is the subject of a new Netflix limited series of the same name. San Juan’s costumes for the series, which stars Ewan McGregor in the title role, reflect not just Halston’s legendary designs but also the fashion trends from the late 1960s thru the early 1990s. Check out Gold Derby’s exclusive video interview with San Juan above.

Fashion designer Halston’s tie-dye collection first dropped in the late 1960s. Silk chiffon was draped over the body and revolutionized fashion as stylish New Yorkers and celebrities such as Anjelica Huston donned the iconic couturier’s caftans.
That collection is one of the looks that’s faithfully re-created by costume designer Jeriana San Juan in the Netflix miniseries written by Ryan Murphy and starring Ewan McGregor in the title role.
“Halston,” which debuts May 14, traces the life of Roy Halston Frowick, the Bergdorf Goodman milliner who got his start as a Chicago hatmaker and shot to fame in the ’60s, becoming mononymic after designing First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s pillbox hat for her husband’s presidential inauguration in 1961.
Over the series’ five episodes, San Juan’s wardrobes focus on several eras as events follow Halston from the late 1950s to the 1990s. Settings include a re-creation of the 1973 “Battle...

Jeriana San Juan, the costume designer of Halston, the Netflix series about the life of America’s first fashion superstar, says the designer’s genius during the ’70s and ’80s was to offer his customers a feeling of freedom. “He believed in a very minimalist approach, with as few seams as possible, that allowed women to have as much movement as possible,” says San Juan, who looked to his signature color red as a focal point in the show. “He believed that all color goes with all color. “Emotionally the rawest of the raw” is the character description that actor Anthony Boyle took from Philip Roth‘s novel “The Plot Against America” to play Alvin Levin in the miniseries adaptation. “He tries to be a hero — he wants to go for what’s right for whatever reason and ends up maybe one of the most tragic characters in it,” Boyle continues in his exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above). He explains about “a pretty full arc” for Alvin, “He’s living his truth to the best of his ability in the first three episodes and war changes him,” so in the finale that aired this week, “Alvin ends up becoming an opportunist.” Boyle concludes, “He rebels against this thing that he ultimately becomes and it’s very tragic.”

“I identified with this story so much because when I read about a first-generation American family, it’s exactly my story, but instead of being Jewish — actually, I’m half Jewish — my family is Cuban,” costume designer Jeriana San Juan reveals in her exclusive interview with Gold Derby about “The Plot Against America” (watch the video above). In an alternate timeline of events, the Final Four would have been decided this past weekend. After four days of whittling away a dozen of the 16 remaining teams in the Ncaa Men’s Basketball Tournament, maybe the public wouldn’t have been in the right mood for a two-hour documentary feature about a player payment scandal that some feared might rip apart the fabric of the entire college hoops structure.

There’s only a thin veneer separating David Simon’s adaptation of Philip Roth’s “The Plot Against America” to today. The story of the rise of fascism in an alternate America where Charles Lindbergh is president easily draws parallels to today’s political landscape and that’s before everything, including the entertainment industry, shut down due to the spread of coronavirus.
Content aside, Simon’s series also subverts audiences’ expectations of what the 1940s looked like. An era commonly associated with Old Hollywood glamour, especially in its costumes, was intentionally stripped and muted through the help of costume designer Jeriana San Juan. Here, San Juan takes IndieWire through the process of creating the looks, from inspiration to production:

“Succession” is one of HBO’s most acclaimed drama series and an Emmy frontrunner in 2020, and its popularity has been bolstered in part by its addicting opening credits sequence. The 90-second sequence is set to Nicholas Britell’s Emmy-winning original theme music and cuts together footage of the New York City skyline with home video footage of the Roy family. The grainy home videos remind viewers about the privilege and isolation of the Roy family at the start of each episode. It turns out this now-classic opening credits sequence owes a lot of credit David Fincher, who crafted virtually the same sequence to open his 1997 mystery thriller “The Game.” Both openings have been embedded in videos below.
An eagle-eyed Reddit user recently noticed the similarities between the “Succession” and “The Game” opening credits and brought it to the attention of viewers. Fincher’s 1997 movie begins with grainy home video footage...
