Hazimation, a small LA-based animation studio, has officially launched their biggest project, a fully animated CG movie called Max Beyond, on digital platforms. Max, a small boy, has been held captive in a research facility for years due to his ability to open rifts to other dimensions. Those who hold him prisoner want to exploit this power, but Max has a plan to escape…if he can just reach his older brother. Leon is planning to break in and bust him out, but Max doesn’t think this is a good idea — he can’t find an outcome where this doesn’t result in Leon’s death. Can Max and Leon save each other? That may require a different approach. “When Max discovers his captors are using his power against him, he realizes he must stop focusing on how the story ends and rewrite the story from the beginning,” reads the description.

Max Beyond tells the story of Max, a young boy held captive in a research facility. Using his ability to create rifts in the fabric of spacetime across parallel universes, he searches for the reality in which his brother Leon, a former-marine, manages to rescue him. With attempt after attempt ending in Leon’s death, the strain starts to take its toll on both brothers. When Max discovers his captors are using his power against him, he realizes he must stop focusing on how the story ends and rewrite the story from the beginning.

"The next time he Rifts, he will die." HaZimation has revealed the first official trailer for the animated sci-fi action thriller movie titled Max Beyond, the latest creation from VFX filmmaker Hasraf 'HaZ' Dulull. We've been a fan of HaZ for years, posting his short films way back when before he broke out into making features and more. Max Beyond uses the latest real-time animation technology in Unreal Engine, allowing HaZ to take a "transmedia view" to expand the story and universe of Max Beyond into a video game. This s sort of a proof of concept movie for the video game, connecting the story in here eventually in your own hands. A Ptsd marine goes to extreme measures to rescue his 8-year-old brother from a science research facility, where he is being experimented on for his special ability to tap into multi-dimensions across space and time (yet another multiverse...

"You're living in his world now." Gravitas Ventures has debuted the trailer for one of the sci-fi feature films from VFX designer and up-and-coming filmmaker Hasraf "HaZ" Dulull. This one is titled 2036 Origin Unknown, and it was made and completed before HaZ's other feature film The Beyond (watch the trailer for that), but is being released after. For 2036 Origin Unknown, HaZ cast sci-fi veteran Katee Sackhoff as Mission Controller Mackenzie Wilson. The plot follows her as she assists an artificial intelligence system, called A.R.T.I., to uncover a mysterious object under the surface of Mars that could change the future of our planet as we know it. This has some cool VFX and big space-y moments, but I'm still not completely sold on it. The main AI story seems a bit lackluster overall, but I might still give this a shot anyway. Fire it up below.

"To find our place in the universe, we must venture beyond our boundaries." Gravitas Ventures debuted this full trailer for the space sci-fi The Beyond, one of the first features from Hasraf 'HaZ' Dulull, who got his start making cool sci-fi short films on Vimeo. We featured a teaser trailer for this earlier in the year, but the film has undergone extensive reshoots and re-edits, and this new trailer is a better look at what HaZ has cooked up. The Beyond is a low-budget sci-fi somewhat based on the idea first introduced in his short Project Kronos - first contact. It's about astronauts going through a wormhole ("The Void") to another part of the universe, who return early, and now everyone wants to know what they found on the other side. The cast includes Nigel Barber, Jane Perry, Brian Deacon, and David Bailie. Sci-fi geeks need to see this. Here's...

We have another astounding sci-fi short film for you to watch from director Hasraf HaZ Dulull. This is this same filmmaker who developed the short films Sync and Project Kronos. This guy is on fire, and I've enjoyed all of the shorts that he has made. His latest project is called "I.R.I.S." It's set in the near future, and deals with a artificial intelligence that goes rouge. Here is a brief plot summary:
Nano tech driven drones are used for reconnaissance missions and social surveillance. These drones are run by Iris, an advanced A.I system, which soon begins to unleash an attack upon mankind the likes of which we have never seen.
"I.R.I.S." features a great, big idea concept that could easily be adapted into a feature film. The idea is amazingly executed in his short, and it's wildly intense. I think you're going to enjoy this!

As this exiled, enslaved outcast becomes their most deadly weapon, he will transform into the hero who inspires this band of outnumbered rebels to seize eternity. 47 Ronin was directed by Carl Rinsch, from a screenplay written by Chris Morgan and Hossein Amini. Why Watch? Filmmaker Hasraf Dulull has done effects work for The Dark Knight, Hellboy II and other high-profile projects, but he’s really emerging as a directing talent to watch with Project Kronos. The documentary-style look at space exploration is layered with sleek informational design and sees scientists trying to solve a conundrum about securing a computer powerful enough to house the data retrieved on an interstellar trip. The answer is simple, but controversial. According to Variety, the short has been picked up by Armory/Benderspinkweiner for the full-length treatment, and it’s easy to see why. It’s like Errol Morris meets Stanley Kubrick — a talking head experience that unfolds like a mystery. Shot pristinely and boasting a rainbow flurry of experimental imagery, this is a fantastic short that exists in a universe worth expanding. Check it out below: What Will It Cost? About 14 minutes. A couple of months ago, we shared a trailer for Project Kronos, a sci-fi space exploration short written and directed by Hasraf 'HaZ' Dulull. The short has now been released online in its entirety. It was filmed in the style of a documentary, and is set in the not too distant future, following a mission to achieve interstellar space travel.
As the mission unfolds with extraordinary results, the scientists find themselves dealing with a much bigger agenda.
This is an interesting short that I think many of you might enjoy checking out, so here ya go!

"This human conscious would represent humanity, if contact was made with other life forms out there." There's a must see new trailer for an interesting pseudo-doc indie project out there called Project Kronos. A reader sent us this Vimeo for a pseudo-documentary (set in the near future) about a "Nasa" program that was an experiment to "collect the data from a journey not possible for a living, breathing human being to survive" interstellar space travel. The ability to visit another planet, another galaxy, and discover life in the universe. The footage looks stunning and it's a thrilling first tease for a rather intriguing sci-fi docu-film. The visual effects that we are seeing in movies these days are absolutely mind blowing. At this point it doesn't seem like there's any excuse for a film to have bad visual effects unless the people hired lack talent, or the studio is keeping the cash in their pockets.
There's a lot of good nomination this year such as Captain America, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Out of all of these I think that Planet of the Apes might take home the top prize, those apes were incredibly freaky looking. Weta did an amazing job with this movie, and out of all the other nominations this was the movie I was most impressed by. What are your thoughts? What movie did you think have the best visual effect in 2011?
