Chicago – How does one attempt to review a picture that has a 5-star opening act, a 2-star finale and several flashes of brilliance amidst a middling midsection? Are the good parts worth savoring despite the overarching flaws? In the case of Bobcat Goldthwait’s scathing yet softhearted satire on American idiocy, the answer is a resounding yes..
“God Bless America” is not as uproarious as Goldthwait’s 2006 effort, “Sleeping Dogs Lie,” nor as poignant as his 2009 Robin Williams vehicle, “World’s Greatest Dad,” but as a disgruntled liberal’s wet dream, the film is impossible to resist—at least during its first half-hour. What nearly holds the film together is the endearingly droll work from leading man Joel Murray (brother of Bill), who could easily attain cult status for this role.
Blu-ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
One of the criticisms routinely launched at this film is that it falls far short of its obvious cinematic inspiration,...

The Amazing Spider-Man (12A)
(Marc Webb, 2012, Us) James Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Denis Leary. 136 mins
New, improved-formula Spider-Man: does whatever last decade's Spider-Man couldn't! The world was hardly screaming out for a rejigged "origins" story, but this at least gives you less comic-book primary colour and more teen-drama shading. Plus better special effects, although the rooftop monster-battle climax feels same-old. Yes, it's a brazenly commercial exercise, but Garfield's limber geekiness tips the balance.
God Bless America (15)
(Bobcat Goldthwait, 2011, Us) Joel Murray, Tara Lynne Barr, Mackenzie Brooke Smith. 105 mins
American media idiocy literally comes under fire in this outlandish Falling Down-meets-Natural Born Killers shooting spree.
The Hunter (15)
(Daniel Nettheim, 2011, Aus) Willem Dafoe, Frances O'Connor, Sam Neill. 102 mins
Dafoe's craggy gravitas dominates this scenic tale of a hunt for the extinct (or is it?) Tasmanian Tiger.
Strawberry Fields (15)
(Frances Lea, 2012, UK) Anna Madeley, Christine Bottomley.
(Marc Webb, 2012, Us) James Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Denis Leary. 136 mins

Chicago – Joel Murray, as most people know, comes from the Murray clan of Wilmette, Illinois, which includes his fellow actor brothers Brian Doyle and Bill. He has established himself as a memorable TV and movie character actor, and portrays a man gone wild in the Bobcat Goldthwait-directed “God Bless America.”
Murray is Frank, a middle aged man recently divorced, fired from his job and possibly terminally ill. With nothing much left to live for, he decides to take out his frustrations on what he considers the idiotic in society – he begins a shooting spree by targeting reality TV stars. He finds an unusual accomplice in a high school student named Roxy (Tara Lynne Barr), and together they embark on a nationwide assault on the pseudo-celebrities of America. This is Murray’s second film collaboration with director/writer Bobcat Goldthwait, having appeared in “Shakes the Clown” in 1992.

Chicago – Embarrassments both mortifying and tragic are viewed through a cathartically hilarious and disarmingly humanistic lens in the cinema of Bobcat Goldthwait. Over the last decade, the “Police Academy” star has emerged as one of the most gifted cinematic satirists in America. His comedic targets are often audaciously provocative and there’s always a wealth of sincerity within the snark.
His jaw-dropping 2003 farce “Windy City Heat” allegedly duped a talentless actor Perry Caravello into unknowingly joining a phony production that promised instant stardom. 2006’s “Sleeping Dogs Lie” charted the downward spiral of a young woman’s personal life after she came clean about her dappling in bestiality, while 2008’s “World’s Greatest Dad” featured a career-best performance from Robin Williams as a father who took advantage of a sudden tragedy to make a last-ditch attempt at happiness.
Goldthwait’s latest film is “God Bless America,” a brutally scathing indictment of America’s increasingly vapid culture.

Honestly, if I was forced to judge Summer 2012 at first glance, I would say it was pretty weak. Compared to 2011 and 2010, there's just not as many movies to look forward to. While it seems easy to write off this Summer as a dud, I have three reasons why it might actually be awesome; The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, and Prometheus. Honestly, that's all Summer 2012 needs in order to be one for the history books. Even then, there's still more than enough films to warrant your attention this summer. To help you sort through them all, we've once again compiled all the most interesting films of the season into four easy to read, informative guides. For the next four days, we'll take you on a journey through the best cinema has to offer in Summer 2012. Welcome to our Summer 2012 Movie Guide! Here's Part One, focusing entirely on the month of May.

God Bless America
Stars: Joel Murray, Tara Lynne Barr, Mackenzie Brooke Smith | Written and Directed by Bobcat Goldthwait
One of my favourite films of 2010 was Bobcat Goldthwait’s black comedy World’s Greatest Dad, a brilliant and very funny film that was shamefully under-marketed; thus it never really found an audience. I’m not even sure it has much of a cult following, meaning I feel obliged to blow the horn for it at every opportunity.
Goldthwait has returned with another slice of jet black satirical humour with God Bless America. It stars Joel Murray as Frank, a divorced father at the end of his tether. Frank has gone beyond being disillusioned with life in twenty-first century America and struggles to contain the rage he feels, caused by society’s general lack of humanity, aggressively conservative politics being spouted by Fox News-esque TV channels, Westboro Baptist Church-style religious intolerance, reality TV and general rudeness.

At the movies, righteous anger is in painfully short supply these days, but writer-director Bobcat Goldthwait manages to harness all of his (and more than a little bit of ours) in “God Bless America,” a scathingly funny indictment of the vagaries of contemporary U.S. culture. Compiling an encyclopedic list of offenses unleashed upon the world through the entertainment industry, the pretense of political discourse, and the increasing indignities of human interaction, Goldthwait crafts a revenge fantasy that’s smart, specific, and imminently sympathetic, even when its characters retaliate in admittedly extreme or inappropriate ways. Desperate for a time before TMZ without purely succumbing to rose-colored nostalgia, “God Bless America” is a twisted but troublingly accurate chronicle of contemporary inhumanity, viewed through the eyes of a man no longer capable of ironic detachment.

Big news coming out of the Toronto International Film Festival today. The lineup for the documentary slate was announced earlier and now the Midnight Madness programme has also been announced. The entire list of genre films playing are listed below and personally I think this is the most exciting in the program’s history. These 10 films close each day of the festival to thousands of hardcore fans who flock out to the Ryerson Theatre each night.
“Ravenous cinephiles will devour the roster of chillers, action thrillers and pitch-black comedies that fill this year’s slate,” said Tiff Programmer Colin Geddes in a press release. “Martial arts assassins, cops and robbers, escaped lunatics and vampire ballerinas will take over Ryerson Theatre every night at midnight, and deliver the shocking and rocking experience that our loyal audience flocks to take part in, helping make these screenings so memorable.”

Each Spring, we TV fans tend to get a little bit crazy. Lots of our favorite shows are in danger of being cancelled and we're all on edge, waiting to see which ones will be back next season. Well, it turns out that the stars are kept in dark just as much as we are!
Fox's Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles series continues the ongoing saga that began with the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic back in 1984. The small-screen chapter features the talents of performers like Lena Headey, Thomas Dekker, Summer Glau, Richard T. Jones, and Brian Austin Green, Garret Dillahunt, Shirley Manson, Leven Rambin, Dean Winters, Stephanie Jacobsen, Mackenzie Brooke Smith, and Sonya Walger.
The sci-fi series completed its second season a few weeks ago and was hardly a ratings winner. Though the highly-anticipated Terminator Salvation movie is coming out on May 21st, not enough people wanted to watch a weekly series.
