Dear Edward,
The news from Apple isn’t good.
The iPhone maker/streamer has canceled its Jason Katims-produced drama Dear Edward, making the series about the lone survivor of a plane crash one of Apple’s few scripted shows to get the ax after a single season.
Based on the book by Ann Napolitano, the series reunited Friday Night Lights creator Katims with leading lady Connie Britton and revolved around Edward (Colin O’Brien), a young boy who was the lone survivor of a plane crash. Taylor Schilling, Amy Forsyth, Carter Hudson, Anna Uzele, Idris DeBrand, Ivan Saw, Dario Ladani Sanchez, Eva Ariel Binder and Brittany S. Hall rounded out the cast. (Britton only had a one-year deal for the show, though Katims expressed hope of continuing her story should a second season have come.)

Amazon doesn’t see a future for As We See It.
The retail giant/streamer has opted to cancel the coming-of-age comedy about three 20-something roommates on the autism spectrum after one season. Reps for Amazon declined to comment on the decision.
The series hailed from Friday Night Lights and Parenthood creator Jason Katims and explored a subject that’s close to his heart as his son — who also inspired a character on Parenthood — is autistic. Jason Katims Sets ‘Dear Edward’ Series at Apple With Connie Britton, Taylor Schilling, Colin O’Brien
Apple has given a series order to the drama series “Dear Edward” from Jason Katims, Variety has learned.
Based on the Ann Napolitano novel of the same name, the series will star Connie Britton, Taylor Schilling, and Colin O’Brien. The role reunites Britton and Katims, who previously worked together on the series version of “Friday Night Lights.”
“Dear Edward” tells the story of Edward Adler (O’Brien), a 12-year-old boy who survives a devastating commercial plane crash that kills every other passenger on the flight, including his family. As Edward and a diverse ensemble of others affected by the tragedy try to make sense of life after the crash, unexpected friendships, romances and communities are formed.
Apple has given the show a 10-episode order. Katims is adapting the book for the screen and will also serve as executive producer and showrunner. It falls under his overall deal with Apple, marking...

It looks like we won’t be finding out what happened after the crew finally landed on Mars. A month and a half after it premiered, Netflix has canceled “Away,” the science fiction drama led by Hilary Swank.
“Away” had very good ratings upon launch, according to Nielsen, debuting at No. 6 after a Sept. 4 premiere, and subsequently spent several weeks in the top 10 of streaming shows. But Netflix weighs viewing versus cost when making decisions about renewals or cancellations, according to individuals with knowledge of the situation, and focuses on full-season orders to any show it greenlights.
Another factor may be the potential cost of shooting a second season under pandemic protocols, something that has led to cancellations and reversed renewals for other series this year.
Executive produced by Jason Katims, “Away” was created by Andrew Hinderaker, who executive produces the series along with showrunner Jessica Goldberg, as well as Katims,...

Netflix is not renewing science fiction drama series “Away” for a second season, Variety has confirmed. The cancellation comes just six weeks after the show’s first season was released on Sept. 4.
“Away” stars Hilary Swank as astronaut Emma Green, who leads the first crewed expedition to Mars aboard the spaceship “Atlas,” called the Mars Joint Initiative. Green leads an international crew with members from China, Russia, India and the U.K who are all experts in the field. Tension rises within the crew when some members do not trust Green’s leadership after her response to a problem at the start of the mission. Its first season consisted of 10 episodes.
Besides Swank, main cast members include Josh Charles, Vivian Wu, Mark Ivanir, Ato Essandoh, Ray Panthaki and Talitha Bateman. Recurring cast members are Monique Gabriela Curnen, Michael Patrick Thornton, Martin Cummins, Gabrielle Rose, Brian Markinson, Fiona Fu, Nadia Hatta,...

Exclusive: Netflix has opted not to pick up a second season of Away, its space drama series starring Hilary Swank. The decision comes a little over a month after Season 1 was released on September 4.
When making renewal/cancellation decisions, Netflix brass analyze viewership versus cost. Away spent several weeks in the top 10 Nielsen streaming viewership rankings, peaking at No 2 for its first full week of release.
Created by Andrew Hinderaker, Away stars Swank as American astronaut Emma Green. As Green prepares to lead an international crew on the first mission to Mars, she must reconcile her decision to leave behind her husband (Josh Charles) and teenage daughter (Talitha Bateman) when they need her the most. I'm going to be totally honest.
When I heard about Away, I figured it was going to be just another space drama.
After watching the first trailer, however, my feelings have changed entirely.
From Executive Producer Jason Katims, the series looks set to focus more on the emotional side of taking to the sky and leaving your family and life behind.
Netflix describes it as "a thrilling, emotional drama on an epic scale that celebrates the incredible advancements humans can achieve and the personal sacrifices they must make along the way."

Hilary Swank is headed to Mars—by way of Netflix in the upcoming television series, Away.
The two-time Best Lead Actress Oscar winner—Boys Don’t Cry in 2000 and Million Dollar Baby in 2005—is headlining a space series from the streaming giant that’s more grounded than its other such offerings like, for example, Lost in Space or Another Life. Indeed, Swank stars in this 10-episode drama series as an American astronaut who reluctantly leaves her family behind for the perilous task of leading Nasa’s first manned mission to Mars.
Interestingly enough, the series is loosely inspired by real-life events, based on an article published in Esquire about a mission of astronaut Scott Kelly.
With that said, check out the first trailer for Netflix’s Away just below.

The streaming service has picked up the untitled half-hour show, which was previously known as On The Spectrum, after handing it a pilot order last year.
Based on an Israeli format, it comes from the Parenthood and Friday Night Lights writer and exec producer’s True Jack Productions, Universal Television, Israel’s yesStudios and Amazon Studios. The project comes from Katims’ previous deal with the NBCU studio; he is currently under an overall deal with Apple.
The series follows three 20-something roommates on the autism spectrum, striving to get a job, keep a job, make friends, fall in love, and navigate a world that eludes them. Rick Glassman, Sue Ann Pien, and Albert Rutecki, who each identify as living on the autism spectrum, Sosie Bacon, Chris Pang, and Joe Mantegna star in the series.

“Almost Family” will not be returning for a second season on Fox.
The series starred Timothy Hutton, against whom an allegation of rape has recently come to light, as a fertility doctor who used his own sperm to conceive more than 100 children over the course of his career. Fox had moved the series to Saturday from its regular Wednesday time slot in mid-January, a pretty obvious signal it was unlikely to last more than 13 episodes.
Brittany Snow starred as one of the aforementioned offspring who united her half siblings, including Megalyn Echikunwoke and Emily Osment, to try and deal with issues that have been affecting their lives. Mustafa Elzein, Mo McRae, and Victoria Cartagena also starred.
“Almost Family” was created by Jason Katims and Annie Weisman and based on the Endemol Shine Australia series “Sisters,” created by Jonathan Gavin and Imogen Banks. Weisman was a writer and executive producer with Katims,...

The Timothy Hutton and Brittany Snow-led drama “Almost Family” has been canceled by Fox after one season, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap Monday.
Executive produced by Jason Katims and Annie Weisman, “Almost Family” followed Julia Bechley (Snow), who finds out her father Leon (Hutton), a prize-winning fertility doctor, used his own genetic material to conceive upwards of dozens of children. Following that revelation, Julia discovers she has two new sisters: her former best friend Edie Palmer (Megalyn Echikunwoke) and ex-Olympic athlete Roxy Doyle (Emily Osment).
News of “Almost Family’s” cancellation came hours after BuzzFeed News published a story in which 50-year-old Canadian model and actress Sera Johnston accused Hutton of raping her in a Vancouver hotel room back in 1983, when she was 14 years old.

Netflix astronaut series Away will star Hilary Swank as the commander of an international space crew, sent on a dangerous mission.
Away, a developing Netflix series, will head to space for a monumental mission with a commander played by two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank and television veteran Josh Charles.
Set as a 10-episode series, Away will be driven by showrunner Jessica Goldberg, who’s known as the creator of Hulu’s subversive 2016-2018 drama, The Path, and wrote the script to directors Joe and Anthony Russo’s 2020-scheduled, Tom Holland-headlined drama, Cherry. The series is said to be loosely inspired by an article published in Esquire about the real-life mission of astronaut Scott Kelly.
The official logline for Away describes a show that “centers on Emma Green [played by Swank], an American astronaut who must leave her husband and teenage daughter behind to command an international space crew embarking upon a treacherous mission.
