Up against former teammate Russell Wilson and his new Denver Broncos crew, the Seattle Seahawks desperately wanted a win last night at home.
With a 17-16 result on Monday Night Football, they got one — and so did ESPN, ABC and the NFL.
In one for the books, last night’s primetime gridiron matchup in Jet City was watched by 19.9 million viewers.
To capture the magnitude of that Monday audience, Mnf’s viewership was 236 greater than the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards over on NBC at the same time. In fact, while the Emmys hit an all-time low, the ESPN, ABC, ESPN2, ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes broadcast game has proven to be the third-most-watched Mnf since 2009. The Seahawks’ win over Denver and Wilson also was the fourth-most-viewed NFL regular season game ever on the Disney-owned sports cabler.

ESPN confirmed Wednesday that it has signed longtime Fox broadcasters Joe Buck and Troy Aikman to multi-year deals, securing their roles as the new voices of the network’s Monday Night Football. The deal takes effect with the upcoming season, which will mark the pair’s 21st season in the booth together — the first 20 years at Fox.
As part of the deals, the network said Buck and Aikman will both contribute content to ESPN+. Contract details were not provided, but the move shores up ESPN’s NFL team as it will boost it coverage over the next few years. ESPN spent last year building up Peyton and Eli Manning as the curators of a loose, bar-talk like show meant as an alternative to its traditional “Monday Night Football.” Now the Disney-backed sports giant is focusing on the main event.
ESPN has signed the two main figures behind Fox Sports’ football presentations, Troy Aikman and Joe Buck, in a bid to strengthen the main “Mnf” booth. The deal, which has been anticipated for several days, will put two of sports’ most-watched game-day figures at the helm of ESPN’s signature offering.

ESPN executives have been trying since 2018 to convince Peyton Manning to join the in-studio broadcast team for their flagship “Monday Night Football.” Now they may be happier that he turned down those overtures.
That’s because the retired NFL quarterback has gained traction with an alternate “Monday Night Football” telecast for ESPN2 that he began hosting with his younger brother, Eli, another former all-star Qb, in September. The stakes couldn’t be higher for ESPN, the NFL or the TV business — even though the decidedly low-tech broadcast, which quickly came to be known as “ManningCast,” feels like a cross between hanging out in a sports bar and a glorified Zoom session.
The brothers have held forth for 10 Monday nights during the 2021 NFL season, offering live banter and crosstalk alongside the same feed of the game being broadcast on ESPN and sometimes ABC. Football fans who want traditional play-by-play game coverage...

ESPN and The Walt Disney Company will feature Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Peyton Manning his brother, Eli, in “megacasts” of Monday Night Football across ESPN2 and other Disney outlets.
The arrangement with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions starts with games in the fall and will cover 30 games over the next three seasons.
Each Manning-centric game will be on ESPN2 and then could also be on ESPN+ or other properties. The broadcasts will complement the mother-ship Monday Night Football telecast on ESPN and/or ABC each week.
The goal of the setup, like other alternate feeds deployed by networks and streaming services in recent years, is to explore new methods of viewer engagement. The Big 4 broadcast networks along with Amazon signed deals with the NFL that start in 2022 and run for more than a decade. The pacts afford flexibility to rights holders to tweak their traditional programming approaches.

ESPN has expanded its first “MegaCast” of Sunday’s NFL Wild Card playoff game to include streaming service ESPN+ and five Disney networks: ESPN, ABC, ESPN2, Freeform and ESPN Deportes.
The Baltimore Ravens-Tennessee Titans matchup will also include a halftime performance by DJ Khaled airing exclusively on Freeform, during a “watch party” hosted by the network.
The game kicks off at 1Pm Et in the middle of a six-game weekend playoff blitz. The NFL added an extra wild card team to both of its conferences before this season, in a bid to heighten the postseason drama. Heading into yesterday’s games, as many as 35 different game combinations were possible before the final matchups were determined.

This year in sports can’t be summed up with Top 10 lists and reels of game clips. So ESPN is going to try some different tactics.
ESPN plans a three-hour primetime event to bid farewell to year in sports that often involved events that took place well off the field. The show, “SportsCenter Presents: 2020 – Heroes, History and Hope,”will air as three one-hour programs and will kick off on Thursday, December 24 at 8 p.m. Jeremy Schaap and Lisa Salters. It will also be available on the ESPN mobile app
“We’ve done all different kinds of year-end specials. Some of them have been anthologies of our best stories commentary. Five or six different panel shows do ten best things, then worst things,” says Schaap, in an interview. “For obvious reasons, that wouldn’t have seemed an appropriate way to look back at a year with so much devastation and heartache...

NFL football games have long commanded TV’s biggest audiences. But Walt Disney is experimenting with bringing its gridiron broadcasts to some smaller viewer niches.
Some of Disney’s biggest TV networks will “mega-cast” a January NFL Wild Card game across ESPN, ABC, Freeform, ESPN Deportes and ESPN2, part of a larger series of efforts the company has tried over the last year to woo different kinds of viewers to professional football. The company intends to offer four different presentations of the post-season game, slated to take place on January 9 or January 10. ESPN and ABC will both show a traditional telecast, while Freeform, best known for series such as “The Bold Type” and “Grown-ish,” will offer an experience tailored to a younger, female audience. The ESPN2 presentation will likely feature a concept the company has experimented with in the past that includes commentary that is more free-flowing and conversational.

In a crucial moment for any TV network that wants to stay in the business of broadcasting NFL football games, ESPN this evening is calling in some big guns.
Before kickoff on tonight’s “Monday Night Football,” the sports-media giant will feature an opening segment designed with help from colleagues at Disney sibling Marvel. The montage looks similar to the opening of one of the studio’s super-hero blockbusters. Viewers will hear narration from Samuel L. Jackson, the actor who plays Nick Fury and has enjoyed a continuing presence in Marvel’s popular films. They will see players from tonight’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens depicted as if they were superheroes from one of Marvel’s colorful comic books. And then they will hear “Heavy Action,” the theme that has been have been an audio hallmark of the program since its tenure on ABC.

You’d think Lisa Salters would have seen everything by now, but the woman who holds the distinction of being the longest-serving sideline reporter in the history of “Monday Night Football” will soon encounter something that has never been part of covering an NFL game.
When ESPN launches this season of “Mnf,” Salters will likely find herself working the game from empty stadium seats, in an area now being referred to as “the moat.” Other reporters who have her role, like CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson and NBC Sports’ Michele Tafoya, are in a similar position: reporting from a game’s sidelines when that area will be off-limits due to restrictions posed by the coronavirus pandemic.
“It’s going to challenge me to think outside the box, and there’s nothing wrong with that,” says Salters, getting ready for her ninth season with the football broadcast. “I have to find a...

ESPN is designing a new configuration for “Outside The Lines.”
The long-running investigative program, which has aired weekdays on various ESPN networks since 2003, is being cancelled in favor of an hour-long edition on Saturday mornings and various “Otl” segments that will pop up during programming staples such as “SportsCenter” and “E:60,” the Disney-backed sports-media giant said Tuesday. “Otl” segments will also appear on ESPN.com.
The weekday program, which typically airs at 1 p.m. eastern, will cease production as of December 20.
“’Outside the Lines’ remains the quintessential journalism brand of ESPN and this approach better positions it for deeper dives into important topics during the Saturday edition; daily, in-the-moment perspective of breaking news; and more seamless inclusion into ‘SportsCenter,’” said Norby Williamson, ESPN’s executive vice president of event and studio production and executive editor, in a statement. “Otl’s team will continue to do what it has always done – create exceptional content,...

Jason Witten might be gone, but Joe Tessitore and Booger McFarland are returning for the 50th season of “Monday Night Football,” ESPN announced on Wednesday morning.
Both Tessitore and McFarland will be in their second seasons on “Mnf,” with Tessitore remaining the sixth person to ever call play-by-play on the show; McFarland will be returning as the show’s lead analyst.
ESPN also announced on Wednesday that it has signed Lisa Salters to a new multi-year deal, allowing the Emmy-winner to return for her eighth season as sideline reporter on “Mnf.” NFL “officiating analyst” John Parry will be joining “Mnf’ for his first season in 2019, ESPN added.

For its upcoming 50th anniversary season, ESPN’s Monday Night Football will bring back play-by-play voice Joe Tessitore and analyst Booger McFarland in the booth.
Lisa Salters will remain a sideline reporter, and John Parry joins as a new officiating analyst. Gone will be McFarland’s controversial 12-foot crane, from where he reported on games last season.
Jason Witten had been the lead analyst with Tessitore last season, and had well-documented struggles with the adjustment to the booth. Witten announced earlier this year he would return to the field, resuming his career as a Dallas Cowboys tight end.
McFarland is the only African-American to serve as a network’s No. 1 NFL game analyst. The only previous one was O.J. Simpson, who was on Monday Night Football from 1983-85.

ESPN unveiled a new “Monday Night Football” team last fall, part of a series of maneuvers aimed at forging better ties with the National Football League. Come autumn, the sports network may have to do it again.
Jason Witten, the rookie analyst who joined “Mnf” last season, is returning to the field.
The Dallas Cowboys said Thursday that Witten, who abruptly retired from the team last May, will come back this fall. ““The fire inside of me to compete and play this game is just burning too strong,” Witten said in a prepared statement. “This team has a great group of rising young stars, and I want to help them make a run at a championship. This was completely my decision, and I am very comfortable with it. I’m looking forward to getting back in the dirt.”
ESPN may not have to look too far for a new analyst.

Hannah Storm knows football fans have to take an extra step to listen to her and Andrea Kremer broadcast “Thursday Night Football.” “It is your choice,” she told viewers during last week’s game between the Denver Broncos and the Arizona Cardinals.
You won’t find the duo holding forth on Fox, which owns TV rights to the NFL’s Thursday-night showcase. To get to them, a sports aficionado must subscribe to Amazon Prime, then opt not only to stream each week’s contest, but also toggle the audio selection to “Storm-Kremer” rather than sticking with the default Fox feed.
The results can be astonishing. Where are the deep male tones of a team like Fox’s Joe Buck and Troy Aikman or NBC’s Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth? Never before in the history of NFL broadcasting has an all-female team called TV games. On other media outlets, female...

When “Monday Night Football” debuts on ESPN on this evening, fans may do a double-take after they see what executives at the network refer to as “The Boogermobile.”

Booger McFarland, the former NFL defensive tackle, will sit atop the contraption, interacting with an all-new team of announcers and analysts. It’s supposed to give him a unique view of the sidelines that he can then share with viewers of the Disney-owned cable network. “Yes, there’s a seatbelt,” says McFarland, during a recent talk with reporters. “I’m asking for another one.”

“Monday Night Football” went south of the border this week as the Oakland Raiders “hosted” the Houston Texans in Mexico City. Espn commentators Sean McDonough and Jon Gruden — along with reporter Lisa Salters on the sidelines and analyst Steve Levy showing off his flawless Spanish -- covered the first NFL regular-season game in Mexico City in 11 years on “Mnf,” and it was certainly eventful. After being neck-and-neck for four quarters, Derek Carr led Oakland to a 27-20 victory in what was considered a Raiders home game. BRISTOL, Conn. -- A little more than six weeks before its debut, ESPN's new investigative newsmagazine series has a name.
"E:60" will premiere at 7 p.m. EDTcq Oct. 16 after "SportsCenter" and air weekly the next four Tuesdays before returning in April and June. The show will have 15 one-hour editions this TV season, with the possibility of more at some point.
Formerly known as "ESPN Reports", the program is being marketed as a cross between HBO's "Real Sports" and CBS' "60 Minutes", with a youthful, fast pace. It is ESPN's first foray into newsmagazines; its other longform journalistic program, "Outside the Lines", will continue as well.
"We want to get at the heart of what we do here, storytelling," said former ABC News veteran Bob Wallace, who is in charge of production. Tapped as reporters for "E:60" will be Jeremy Schaap, Lisa Salters, Tom Farrey, Rachel Nichols and Michael Smith.
There won't be an anchor per se in the way that Bryant Gumbel is for "Real Sports". The correspondents will introduce their pieces, and the beginnings and endings of the show will be in black and white, drawn from the story conferences the reporters and executives have behind the scenes.
