This week's episode of the Empire Podcast is a smash, folks. First off, Alex Godfrey talks to ace actor Mike Faist, star of Luca Guadagnino's new tennis movie, Challengers [23:12 - 37:33 approx.], and then Chris Hewitt has a Zoom session (apologies if the sound is slightly distorted — tech issues) with Kerry Condon, Oscar-nominated star of The Banshees Of Inisherin, voice of F.R.I.D.A.Y. in the MCU, and star of this week's Liam Neeson thriller, In The Lands Of Saints And Sinners. [57:25 - 1:15:29 approx.] Either side of those, Chris hosts in the podbooth and is joined by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer and, for a spell, Sophie Butcher, to discuss the week's movie news, including the latest Deadpool & Wolverine trailer, review Challengers, In The Land Of Saints And Sinners, Boy Kills World, and Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver, and tackle a listener question that has stuck around from last week, and mutated somehow into a...

This week's Empire Podcast is up later than usual, for which we apologise most sincerely, but we're hopeful that it will be worth the wait. It's a very special live episode, recorded on Thursday night at Leeds Trinity University as part of their Journalism & Media Week, and saw Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara and James Dyer travel to Horsforth in Leeds to have a ton of film-related fun in front of an audience of Empire Podcast listeners and media students. But that's not all — the brilliant Gareth Evans, director of :a[The Raid]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/raid-review/' } and :a[The Raid 2]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/raid-2-review/' }, travelled with the team as both our very special guest and an honorary Colleague Of Such Lethal Cunning, sitting in with us for the entire show. Which means you'll hear Gareth in the Movie News section,...

Another jam-packed edition of the freshly award-losing Empire Podcast this week, folks, with three separate interviews, and four incredible guests. First, Chevalier star Kelvin Harrison Jr. talks French accents and violins with Neel Bhatt (making his pod interview debut!) Then, Eva Longoria — director of Flamin' Hot and possessor of one of the best laughs in the business — sits down on Zoom with James White to talk about her feature film directorial debut. And then Chris Hewitt is visited in studio by Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts stars Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback, and gets one of them hopelessly addicted to M&s Phizzy Pigtails. Be warned: there are sounds of chewing during this interview, which we know puts some people off. Forewarned is forearmed and all that.

Greetings, Spidey fans! This week's episode of the Empire Podcast sees Chris Hewitt point at Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse stars, Shameik Moore (aka Miles Morales), Hailee Steinfeld (aka Gwen Stacy), and Daniel Kaluuya (aka Spider-Punk). They also have a fun chat once the fingers are holstered.
Speaking of fingers, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara, who has her full complement, and James Dyer, who… well, you'll see. Together, the three of them chat about the week's movie news, review Across The Spider-Verse, Rob Savage's The Boogeyman, and Tina Satter's Reality, while they tackle a listener question that asks which director won the 1980s. Whoever it is, we hope they keep it on their mantelpiece. But that's not all! Ian Freer also has a chat with the most excellent Melissa Barrera, star of the recent Scream series and now this week's adaptation of Carmen. Ok, let's do this one more time…...

Since he burst onto the scene in the late Eighties, Spike Lee has been one of the most inventive and vital voices in American cinema. The great director came to London in February to receive a BFI Fellowship, the highest honour the British Film Institute can bestow, and as part of that received the highest honour the Empire Podcast can bestow: an interview special, in which he sits down with Chris Hewitt for a fascinating chat, in which they talk primarily about Malcolm X, his epic biopic of the great African-American civil rights leader and activist, and a few other things besides.

Composer Michael Giacchino has said yes to The Batman. Filmmaker Matt Reeves surprised the crowd Friday at an event at London's Royal Albert Hall, where Giacchino and and fellow composer David Arnold were engaging in some friendly competition by comparing works they've done.
When Reeves took the stage, he got down on one knee in a mock proposal, asking Giacchinoto board his project, as captured in a video from an attendee, and reported by Empire journalist Chris Hewitt.

Critics mostly hated the ‘poisonously dull’ superhero movie – but it’s a monstrous worldwide hit with cinema-goers
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a cinema-goer in search of a bad movie at the multiplex today must be in want of Venom. Tom Hardy’s unhinged superhero tale – based on a Spider-Man villain, but lacking even a passing reference to the now Marvel-owned web-slinger – is being showered in the viscous black goo of negative critical reviews. Chris Hewitt on The Empire Podcast declared it could set comic-book movies back 10 years and this publication’s Peter Bradshaw said it was “riddled with the poison of dullness”.
And yet, people are going to see Venom. Its global box office opening weekend of $205m has doubled its $100m production budget and the mammoth $80.3m domestic bow smashed the $55m record for an October opening previously held by Alfonso Cuarón’s Oscar-winning Gravity.

With San Diego Comic-Con fast approaching, and Warner Bros. expected to make a big splash at the “largest convention of its kind in the world,” an announcement confirming the long-delayed sequel to Man of Steel could be imminent. However, with Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie no longer keen on helming Man of Steel 2, the flick could find itself back in production limbo.
Given his experience during an impassioned Twitter debate the other day, in which he leapt to defend fellow filmmaker Rian Johnson – who’s been the recipient of unabashed fandom hate following the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi – McQuarrie unofficially tendered his resignation from the laundry list of directors eager to helm Supes’ second solo feature. Although, this isn’t the first time he’s witnessed fan entitlement firsthand.
By now, I’m sure you’re all aware of the moustache that sent the web into a tizzy.

Ahead of the first footage of the highly anticipated Doctor Who Christmas special, which will arrive later today, we’ve now learned that Mark Gatiss will be appearing in the yuletide episode.
Alongside outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat and Doctor Peter Capaldi, Gatiss was talking to Empire’s Chris Hewitt in a Facebook live interview when he announced the news. Though it wasn’t revealed who he’ll be playing, he described the experience as “a privilege, an honour and a thrill.” Capaldi said that the Sherlock co-creator and actor gives a wonderful performance in the episode and teased that Gatiss’ character is “a resonant echo in the whole Doctor Who story.”
This is far from Gatiss’ first appearance in the sci-fi institution. A lifelong fan, he first achieved his dream of acting on the show when he guest starred in the 2007 episode “The Lazarus Experiment” as the mad scientist Professor Lazarus,...

I always knew you could find some fun/weird stuff on Google Maps and Street View, but now you can find magical creatures and sorcerers! Both Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Doctor Strange have New York City locations and Google has revealed a special Easter egg for both. Marvel Comics has always pulled from real-world locales for their stories and the Sanctum Sanctorum, Dr. Stephen Strange's home, is one of them. We'll see it in the upcoming Marvel film, but Google (or Marvel, or both) decided to have a bit of fun and let us spot it on a map. Empire Magazine's Chris Hewitt apparently discovered it first, but you need to type "Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum" in order to get the actual name to pop up. Love this. Type 177a Bleecker Street into Google Maps and this shows up. (I think it's actually a grocery...

Hello folks - I'm Chris Hewitt, and welcome to Empire's coverage of the (quickly Googles) 87th Academy Awards. You might better know them, of course, as The Oscars. Or the Ossies, as absolutely nobody calls them. It's going to be a glitzy and, let's face it, extraordinarily long night of earnest speeches, terrible musical numbers, and roughly 837 versions of the hot button question, 'who/what/why are you wearing?'. Which is what this part of our live blog will concern - the arrivals, as the great and good of Hollywood - and their plus ones - will line up on the red carpet, wave at the plebs and then subject themselves to a furious, no-holds-barred Seacresting. After we're done with that, we'll have a separate section dedicated to the show itself, hosted this year by Neil Patrick Harris. Sitting comfortably? Then we can begin. Word to the wise: I've...

Ben Wheatley is taking a rare break from film this year, directing episodes of Doctor Who rather than bringing us another British chiller in the vein of Kill List, Sightseers or A Field In England. But even as he gets to grips with the Tardis, he's planning his next foray onto the big screen with an adaptation of J.G. Ballard's High-Rise. He spoke to our Chris Hewitt in the new issue of Empire to tell us a little more about the Tom Hiddleston-starring film."It's a very relevant book. It was written in the '70s, projecting itself into a near future, but we live in that future now. It's a book that's about our parents in a way, that generation, and we're the generation that's the Thatcher generation. We're almost in a new version of the '70s. Nothing's really moved forward particularly. It just resets, doesn't it?...

Gemma Arterton has been magnetic in films from Byzantium to The Disappearance Of Alice Creed, survived the Bond girl thing, is the new Gemma Bovery and she scrubs up better than Alfred Molina in Lego. She'll soon be lending a critical eye to a new generation of acting talent as a judge of 2014's Ee BAFTA Rising Star Award."I’m honoured to be part of this year's Ee Rising Star Award jury," Arterton enthused. "I know industry support and recognition is crucial for success when you are starting out."Arterton joins a panel of film folk that includes Harry Potter casting director Karen Lindsay-Stewart, In Bruges producer Peter Czernin, director Kirk Smith (Nanny McPhee) and our very own Chris Hewitt. Thor: The Dark World thundered into Leicester Square last night (October 22) for its world premiere, with stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and Natalie Portman walking the red carpet.
The first reviews quickly followed, with Digital Spy's Emma Dibdin calling it "a hugely entertaining and sharply written continuation of Marvel's Phase 2". How did the other big online media outlets react? We round up a handful of the critics' verdicts below...
Chris Hewitt - Empire
"So, where Kenneth Branagh's introduction to Thor was a charming, cheesy, even campy fish-out-of-water comedy, Alan Taylor's The Dark World is - tonally, visually, thematically - a different kettle of bilgesnipe, on a much bigger scale than the relatively low-key first instalment. At times it even feels like a sci-fi war movie. The one thing it doesn't feel like, even though its lead character can fly and is virtually indestructible, is a superhero movie."

Fifty Shades of Grey fans the world over were stunned today (October 12) when Universal Pictures announced that Charlie Hunnam is quitting the role of Christian Grey.
Hunnam had been quite vocal about taking the role very seriously in recent weeks, but apparently his television commitments to Sons of Anarchy clashed with Fifty Shades of Grey's production schedule.
The movie is now without a leading man, with less than a year to go until its scheduled cinema release. Digital Spy rounds up a selection of the online reactions below...

You might not immediately recognise the name Angus Wall, but you've probably seen his work. A renowned film editor, he's worked repeatedly with David Fincher and won Oscars for The Social Network and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. And now he's making the move out of the editing suite and behind the camera, planning his first feature as a director. It's a thriller written by Source Code's Ben Ripley, and it's called Empire.Details of the exact plot are under wraps, but it seems likely that it will involve Chris Hewitt's Videoblogisode Man in his epic daily struggles with Dan Jolin's Kerfuffle Shuffler, an army of office mice, and mysterious henchperson The Hobnoblin. Haha, we will have our little joke. The real thrust is apparently something along the lines of The Usual Suspects and Safe House.Without much to go on, it's tough to speculate what exactly is in store,...

An online campaign called Anglia Square Not Leicester Square, started by two fans, resulted in the world premiere of Alpha Papa, the Alan Partridge movie, being held in his native Norwich. It’s only fitting, given that the man himself has described the film as being “a love letter to the city”, and his famous hatred of London, that the film should have its first showing in the biggest cinema in town.
Norwich itself was happy to oblige, pulling out most of the stops for one of their most famous residents. Empire Magazine’s Chris Hewitt tweeted a picture of a particularly impressive sign:

After arriving on the cinematic scene in fine style with Margin Call, writer/director J.C. Chandor has followed that up with the Robert Redford-starring All Is Lost, which is receiving plenty of plaudits at Cannes (you can read our Chris Hewitt’s take on it here and hear what everyone else thought on the podcast at the bottom of the page). It’s no surprise that with two fine films under his belt he’s able to set up his next, and he’s locked in a project called A Most Violent Year.According to Deadline, the details of the plot are being kept under lock and key for now, but top talent is being approached to star (we’d imagine plenty will take Chandor’s call after the likes of Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons and Stanley Tucci appeared in Margin Call and Robert Redford headlined All Is Lost...

Hiddlesticks!* Rejoice! For the man they call Loki is back in a massive Disney franchise film. No, he hasn’t been asked to return for the Avengers sequel – yet – but he has apparently snagged a small role in The Muppets… Again. According to Kermit-centric blog MuppetsHenson, which went rooting around in Hiddleston’s online CV, he’ll show up in the Muppets sequel as a character (presumably a Houdini-style magician) called The Great Escapo. He’s just one of a wealth of planned appearances, with Dexter Fletcher, Peter Serafinowicz and more cameoing. Tina Fey, Ricky Gervais and Ty Burrell are the main players besides the usual Muppet gang in a tale that sees them embarking on a world tour. Criminal forces have other plans for our fuzzy favourites, especially Constantine, who just so happens to look exactly like Kermit... The movie is produced and directed by a Spanish crew, and it is also based on Spanish characters, so why didn't the Oscar nominated film “The Impossible” cast Hispanics for its lead roles?
Directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, "The Impossible" describes the tragedy lived by a Spanish family of five during their 2004 Holiday vacation to Thailand, the day an Indian Ocean tsunami swept in and killed at least 227,898 people and devastated more than 14 countries.
However, despite the fact that the Alvarez-Belon family, composed by Quique and Maria Alvararez, and their sons Lucas, Tomas and Simon, were clearly of Spanish descent, the movie's main characters, Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, speak in a very strong British accent, do not look alike and never reveal their nationality. It is not until the film ends and the audience gets a glimpse of who the real survivors were, that they finally discover the family’s strong cultural background.

Given that it's already grossed £50 million in just ten days at the UK box office, we're guessing that you've seen the new James Bond film, Skyfall. So you'll know that the film doesn't begin with the traditional gun barrel sequence, where Bond walks into the sights of a sniper, accompanied by the James Bond Theme, and shoots said sniper with his customary elan.Instead, like Quantum Of Solace, the gun barrel sequence is reserved for the end of the film, a decision that has become one of the few contentious points about a film that's otherwise universally embraced. Now Sam Mendes has spoken about the decision to do so, during an Apple Store Q&A with Empire's Chris Hewitt. Responding to a question from an audience member who raised the issue of the gun barrel sequence, Mendes replied, "I tried very hard to put the gun barrel at the beginning...

Yes, it's still 2 weeks out. But for those of you wanting to see this movie, this is incredibly good news. With reviews coming most notably from Empire and Variety the movie currently stands at 27 "fresh" reviews, we can only wait and see if the rating will stand in the coming weeks. A possible reason for this is that people may not be watching this movie as closely as other releases so not as many critics are flocking to find opportunities to see it, but I hope it's because it's just that good. For the record Joey and Ben were big fans of the entire film! Here's what other critics had to say.
Grim, gritty and ultra-violent, Dredd reinstates the somber brutality missing from the U.K. comicbook icon's previous screen outing, the disappointing 1995 Sylvester Stallone starrer Judge Dredd. -Geoff Berkshire, Variety
A solid, occasionally excellent take on the character, with Urban's chin particularly impressive.
