Eight years after “Munyurangabo”, Lee Isaac Chung and his frequent collaborator, Samuel Gray Anderson, return to Rwanda to co-direct a documentary on 39-year-old Jean Kwezi, who was separated from his family during the 1994 genocide, only reuniting with them many years later, long after they presumed him dead.
“I Have Seen My Last Born” is screening at Hong Kong Arts Centre, as part of Cries and Whispers: Film Retrospective of Lee Isaac Chung
The documentary is split into two parts, with the first one dealing with his life, working for Chung’s Rwandan outpost for his U.S.-based production company, Almond Tree Films, with his daughter, who has grown up apart from him and now learns to live with him, while the second deals with an extended visit to his mother’s home. Through extended interviews with the protagonist and of his daughter’s footage, mostly in school, we learn...

According to The New York Times, prior to the making of the film, director Lee Isaac Chung’s wife Valerie, an art therapist, had traveled to Rwanda as a volunteer to work with those affected by the 1994 genocide. At her urging, Chung accompanied her and volunteered to teach a filmmaking class at a relief base in Kigali in the summer of 2006. Sensing an opportunity to present the contemporary reality of the country and to provide his students with practical film training, Chung arrived with a nine-page outline which he had written with the help of old friend (and the film’s eventual co-producer and co-writer) Samuel Gray Anderson. Chung shot Munyurangabo over 11 days, working with a team of nonprofessional actors he found through local orphanages and his students as crew members. The result was rather positive, as “Munyurangabo”, which is the first narrative feature in the Kinyarwanda language, premiered in...

Lee Isaac Chung may have sprung to global film with his semi-autobiographical Minari, which saw star Youn Yuh-jung pick up a Best Supporting Actress Oscar, but he made this, his first feature, way back in 2007.
Filmed on location in Rwanda and the first feature to be shot in the Kinyarwanda language, it considers the impact of the country's genocide via the rearview mirror, through the friendship of Ngabo (Jeff Rutagengwa) - the shortened name form of the film's title - and Sangwa (Eric Ndorunkundiye). Both the history of the friends and their plans for the future are gradually revealed, with Chung and his co-writer Samuel Gray Anderson taking a slow build approach to the story - although it comes as little surprise that one is Hutu and the other Tutsi. All we know at first is that they are on "a journey", destination unspecified, but which includes a stop-off...

The 2012 Tribeca All Access program has selected eleven works in progress for its lineup this year (six narratives and five documentaries), and since one of the films is described as "a modern day twist on Frankenstein", of course we have to share the details.
The film in question is Bypass, written and directed by Liliana Greenfield-Sanders and produced by Amy Basil and Rowen Riley.
Synopsis:
20-year-old Katie is popular, high-achieving, and obese; but all of this is about to change when she undergoes a series of radical gastric and plastic surgeries. Bypass is a modern day twist on Frankenstein in which the protagonist is herself both creator and monster.
Sounds horror-ish at least, right? There's one other selection that might fall a bit on our side of the fence, and that's Abigail Harm, directed by Lee Isaac Chung and written and produced by Samuel Gray Anderson, although it's likely more in the fantasy category.

While most eyes are on Austin, Texas this week for SXSW, many people on the East Coast eagerly await a closer show as this year’s Tribeca Film Festival kicks off on April 21st. The festival is mainly for indie pictures, rather than the larger, blockbuster films, but is also a great place for up-and-coming directors and writers to showcase their work.
With the festival coming up in just over a month, they are already rolling out this year’s schedule and have announced the first 34 films out of a total of 85 feature length and 47 shorts screening at this year’s fest. Among the titles were those submitted to the World Narrative and Documentary competition, as well as the Showcase and Special Events.

The 2010 Tribeca Film Festival has announced its scheduled lineup -- and just like its home, New York City, its got a little bit of everything.
The Festival will kick off with the world premiere of DreamWorks' 3D "Shrek Forever After."
But then it launches into a darker realm with documentaries like Alex Gibney's latest. The Oscar-winning director ("Taxi to the Dark Side") will screen his new untitled doc on the former New York Governor Elliot Spitzer, who resigned his post in 2008 due to a sex scandal, as a work-in-progress. The film will screen as one of three special events that festival organizers announced Wednesday (Mar. 10).
The Special Events section also includes another work-in-progress screening of "The Western Front." This documentary follows its writer/director and Marine, Zachary Iscol, who returns to his battle site in Iraq's Al Anbar province. David Lean's 1965 classic "Doctor Zhivago" got a make-over for its 45th anniversary,...

Alex Gibney's latest documentary, a portrait of former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, who resigned his post in 2008 because of a sex scandal, will be spotlighted at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival, which runs from April 21 to May 2 in New York.
The currently untitled film from the director of the Oscar-winning "Taxi to the Dark Side," will screen as a work-in-progress as one of three special events that festival organizers unveiled today.
"I think people will be really surprised," said David Kwok, the festival's director of programming. "It doesn't just focus on the scandal. It's more comprehensive than that, looking at Eliot Spitzer as a person and at his entire career."
Also playing in the fest's Special Events section are David Lean's 1965 epic "Doctor Zhivago," marking its 45th anniversary with a new restoration that will be released by Warner Home Video, and a work-in-progress screening of the doc "The Western Front,...
