The plastic horns are a traditional noisemaker in South African sports stadiums. But the sound of thousands of vuvuzelas honking has commentators, networks and audiences at home raising their voices in protest.
The BBC received 554 viewer complaints about the sound of vuvuzelas in its live World Cup coverage from South Africa, with many fans claiming they couldn't hear the commentary. It's a similar story worldwide, with on-air pundits, newspaper editorials and Internet bloggers pitching in to bitch about the horn.
Even the players hate it. Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has complained that the noise affects player concentration, and the French team blamed its 0-0 draw with Uruguay last Friday on the distracting drone.

New York -- Spanish-language broadcaster Univision Communications is going all-out for the soccer World Cup in South Africa this summer, unveiling Wednesday extensive cross- platform coverage plans.
The company has the exclusive Spanish-language broadcast rights in the U.S. to the FIFA World Cup.
It will broadcast all 64 matches live and in HD and provide coverage about and surrounding the big sports event across its Univision, TeleFutura, Galavision, Univision.com, Univision Movil and Univision On Demand assets with nearly 900 hours of comprehensive coverage.
The World Cup starts June 11
"The FIFA World Cup Tournament is the most important sporting event for Hispanics bar-none," said Alina Falcon, president of news, Univision Communications. "By deploying all of our assets, soccer fans will be able to enjoy every moment of the tournament when and where they want."
For the first time, all games will be available to multi channel subscribers on demand the morning after they air live.

The event was timed with the publication of The Hollywood Reporter's inaugural Hispanic Women in Entertainment special report, which spotlighted the achievements of 25 movers and shakers. CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler topped the list at No. 1. Other honorees in the top 10 included Belinda Menendez, president of NBC Universal International Television Distribution; actress-producer Salma Hayek (ABC's "Ugly Betty"); Lucia Ballas-Traynor, GM of MTV Tres; Alina Falcon, executive vp and operating manager, Univision; Darlene Caamano Loquet, NALA Films president; Christina Davis, senior vp drama series development at CBS; Antoinette Zel, senior executive vp strategy, Telemundo; Alexandra Lioutikoff, senior vp Latin membership, ASCAP; and actress-singer-producer Jennifer Lopez.
