Update: President Joe Biden, speaking to attendees at tonight’s Los Angeles fundraiser, said that Donald Trump “is dragging us back to the past and not leading us to the future.”
“We stand with the truth and we are going to defeat him and his lies,” Biden said at the event, according to a pool report. The event was at the home of Haim Saban, but he was not there after testing positive for Covid, nor was the other main co-host, Casey Wasserman, who also tested positive.
In his remarks, which lasted about 15 minutes, Biden presented a contrast between himself and Trump, as donors have been calling for the campaign to sharpen its attacks on the president’s likely rival.
Biden also talked of the death of Alexei Navalny, blaming it on Vladimir Putin. He called it “outrageous” that Trump has not condemned the Russian leader.

Donald Trump hasn’t stepped on stage once this election season to debate his Republican rivals, but the ex-president today challenged Joe Biden to show up for multiple face-to-face match-ups.
“I’ll do it right now on your show, I’ll challenge him right now,” Trump gleefully told Laura Ingraham tonight after the Fox News host pressed him in a piece of staged political theater to debate his 2020 foe in 2024. “We can do you, you can do anybody you want, Trump told Ingraham in the pre-recorded town hall as she offered to moderate at least one of the hypothetical debates. “I’ll take anybody from CNN, which is doing very poorly in the ratings by the ways as you probably know. I’ll take anybody because I think you have an obligation to debate.”
Knowing perfectly well that the much-cloistered Biden will have to respond, Trump took his version of a statesman approach.

The event will take place February 20, part of a West Coast visit that also includes events in the Bay Area.
According to the invite, tickets for the event start at $3,300 per person, rising to $250,000 for those who want to be listed as a co-chair. Those who contribute $25,000 and above will be able to get a photo with the president.

Today is the latest deadline for campaigns and committees to disclose donors, offering a glimpse at who is putting up huge sums in the 2024 elections, which may end up being the most expensive ever.
According to the latest filings with the Federal Election Commission, Jeffrey Katzenberg, who is campaign co-chair of Joe Biden’s campaign, contributed $1 million to the Ff Pac, which is short for Future Forward, the main independent entity backing the president’s re-election bid. Future Forward made news this week when it announced plans to spend $250 million in an advertising blitz in battleground states. Money is being raised via the SuperPAC and a non profit, meaning some donors have to be disclosed and others do not.
Also contributing to Ff Pac was Sheryl Sandberg, the former Meta exective who recently announced that she was leaving the tech giant’s board. According to Fec records, she contributed $500,059 in...

When Los Angeles voters head to the polls March 5 and again in the November general election, President Biden won’t have to sweat the results here and across the state. Nearly twice as many Californians are registered Democrat as they are Republican. In 2020, 71 percent of L.A. County voters picked Biden.
But Los Angeles remains popular for Democrats for reasons beyond ballot counting — it’s a fountain of campaign cash, much of it spouting from the entertainment industry. Consider that clutch of December fundraisers where co-hosts and attendees included such glossy names as Steven Spielberg, Shonda Rhimes, Jon Hamm and Barbra Streisand. The events may have taken place amid some grumbling over lagging poll numbers and questions about whether the octogenarian commander-in-chief can woo young voters, but ultimately the wallets opened wide. Media reports put the take from the soirees at about $15 million, a hefty part of the $97 million the campaign on Jan.

MPTF is launching the “Back to Work” campaign, a fundraiser to assist crew members impacted financially by the Hollywood strikes.
“While the agreement between the WGA and AMPTP and the tentative agreement between SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP are certainly encouraging, our crews will continue to struggle for many months to come,” Bob Beitcher, MPTF President & CEO, said in a statement. “The financial and emotional pain will not be flipped off like a light switch but will require months or longer to heal.”
Filmmakers and Hollywood executives have provided lead gifts to the fund like Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas.
“We are thrilled that SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP have tentatively agreed to a new contract, but it will be a while before most of our industry colleagues are back at work, and the MPTF is going to play a vital part in supporting crews as they return to set,...

4th Update, Oct 16: Casey Wasserman is the latest Hollywood heavyweight to speak out in support of Israel.
“There is no justification for this,” the Wasserman chairman-ceo – and chairman of the L.A. 2028 committee – reportedly said at an International Olympic Committee session in Mumbai on Monday. “I unequivocally stand in solidarity with Israel, but let me be clear I also stand with the innocent civilians in Gaza who did not choose this war.”
Referencing the terrorist kidnapping of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Games, Wasserman continued, “Unfortunately, the Olympics are not immune to the world we live in.
“At its worst, it is a platform for hate to express itself on the stage and we will always remember the 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team who were taken hostage and murdered in Munich.
“But at its best it is an opportunity for sport to show the world a better path with peace and unity,...

Anonymous Content, the management and production company that backed Oscar winner The Revenant and the upcoming season of HBO’s True Detective, is undergoing a notable round of layoffs.
The Culver City-based firm cut 8 percent of around 170 employees companywide, a source confirms to The Hollywood Reporter. Employees were notified of the layoffs on Friday.
The company, which saw CEO Dawn Olmstead and COO Heather McCauley exit in March, has yet to unveil a new leader although a source says that the firm is in the “final stages” of naming a top executive.
Emerson Collective, founded by Laurene Powell Jobs, is a minority investor in Anonymous Content, and has backed the company since its investment in 2016 when it touted a roster of 500 clients.
The firm, founded by the late Steve Golin in 1999, has also produced projects like Spotlight, Schitt’s Creek and Mr. Robot. Its recent releases include multiple projects with Netflix (Midnight Sky,...

Management and marketing powerhouse Wasserman has clinched its acquisition of UK-based Csm Sport & Entertainment, expanding its services and geographic footprint.
The deal for Csm, led by Matt Vandrau, was unveiled in July. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.
The move further broadens Wasserman’s reach in pro-sports as well as music and entertainment, expanding tailored services it can offer through a network of relationships with brands, properties and talent across 27 countries and 62 cities worldwide, said today’s announcement, calling the two companies “a natural fit.”
This is also acquisition no. 12 for the Wasserman over the past two years, the company said. Last month, it acquired entertainment management and production company Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
In a seminal deal in 2021, it Wasserman acquired Paradigm’s live music division, launching Wasserman Music, at a time when Covid had grounded touring revenues — which have since seen a dramatic resurgence.
In 2022, it announced a strategic investment by Providence Equity Partners.

Creative Artists Agency and Artémis have closed their previously announced agreement for the Pinault family’s investment company to become majority stakeholders in the entertainment and sports agency, the companies said Monday.
As previously reported in TheWrap, Bryan Lourd, Kevin Huvane and Richard Lovett will remain co-chairmen of CAA. Lourd will be named chief executive officer while Jim Burtson will remain president. Singapore-headquartered global investment firm Temasek will remain a minority investor in CAA. Cmc Capital will remain a CAA strategic partner.
Artémis CEO Francois-Henri Pinault had been in discussions to buy the stake in the talent agency — which underwent company-wide layoffs in early August — since at least July.
Tpg will exit the investment of 35% of the agency that it made in 2010, which it increased to a majority stake in 2014. The secondary investment was reported to be $225 million for the 53% majority stake. It was a landmark moment for growth for CAA,...

Back when Casey Wasserman’s bespectacled grandfather Lew Wasserman was Hollywood’s top power broker, he was known to step in to clear up labor stalemates with a sense of fairness and the authority to get cooler heads to prevail. His grandson, whose music/sports powerhouse firm just acquired Brillstein Entertainment Partners, learned a lot from his famed grandfather, and believes he’d have a plan to solve the current AMPTP battle with WGA and SAG-AFTRA, and that he would not have let it get this far, with thousands not getting a paycheck for over five months. Hopefully the resumption of talks this week will bring the kind of resolve Wasserman describes, even if there is so much mistrust between the sides that there is no leader whose word carried the weight that Wasserman’s did back in the day.

Just over a year ago, the leadership of Brillstein Entertainment Partners — a pioneering Hollywood company founded in 1969 by talent broker icon Bernie Brillstein, who managed names like Lorne Michaels, Garry Shandling, Brad Pitt, Nicolas Cage and Mike Myers — started thinking about strategic options for their business, including a sale.
The management and production firm had been led by co-CEOs Cynthia Pett and Jon Liebman since 2005, when the duo bought out the stake of executive Brad Grey and Brillstein-Grey dropped the latter name from the shingle. (Notably, the late Grey, who went on to become CEO of Paramount Pictures, took the backend interest in HBO’s The Sopranos, which had been produced by Brillstein, with him.)

Sports and music representation powerhouse Wasserman has finalized its acquisition of Brillstein Entertainment Partners, the venerable Hollywood management and production company. Terms were not disclosed. Deadline exclusively revealed the acquisition talks back in February.
Wasserman chairman and CEO Casey Wasserman and Brillstein co-CEOs Cynthia Pett and Jon Liebman made the announcement. It puts Wasserman, grandson of the iconic Hollywood representative and studio chief Lew Wasserman, directly into the film and TV representation and production game for the first time. It is the second strategic alignment for Wasserman, who took over the lucrative music touring business that was once the most profitable part of the Paradigm agency, at a time when the pandemic grounded live touring revenues.
It would be the latest move in management after 3Arts made a deal with Lionsgate, and Range Media Partners linked with Automatik.
Wasserman, Pett and Liebman believe their cultures will mesh in their compatible business and staffs.

Wasserman, the marketing and talent representation firm founded by mogul Casey Wasserman, may be taking more direct aim at the speaker divisions of Hollywood’s major agencies with the launch of its own unit aimed at booking appearances for clients.
The Los Angeles-based firm launched Wasserman Speakers on Thursday, with a client roster that features sports and entertainment figures including Idina Menzel, Megan Rapinoe, Mike Tirico and Herbie Hancock, among others. The unit will be led by vp Julie Leventhal, a veteran of the space who worked at The Montag Group’s Tmg Speakers before that media agency was acquired by Wasserman in January of last year.

Management firm Wasserman has unveiled a deal to buy Csm Sport & Entertainment, the UK-based agency.
Terms of the purchase agreement were not disclosed, but Casey Wasserman’s lifestyle marketing and management business is looking to grow its presence in the pro sports business arena worldwide. The move comes as Hollywood talent agencies look to increase representation of marketable pro sport leagues and players as they seek entertainment and endorsement deals.
Csm, which arranges partnerships between marketing brands and rights holders, recently did event marketing and hospitality services for Major League Baseball games in London between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs, and handled event marketing for The All England Lawn Tennis Club, the organizers of the Wimbledon pro tennis competition.
The proposed transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2023, Wasserman said. Founded in 2002, the firm represents sports and entertainment figures, musical artists, brands and properties worldwide.

And Bob Iger, back on the throne at the Walt Disney Company, will also be touching down in the resort town after a brief, unhappy (for shareholders) interregnum. They’ll be mixing and mingling with other media barons, Silicon Valley heavyweights and political players at the media finance retreat hosted by Allen & Co.

Wasserman is closing in on a deal to acquire Brillstein Entertainment Partners, TheWrap has learned.
A source tells TheWrap that the two parties, who have been negotiating for months, could close a potential deal within the next 30 days or not at all. Representatives for Wasserman and Brillstein did not immediately return TheWrap’s request for comment.
Bernie Brillstein founded the talent management firm in 1969 and formed a television production company with Brad Grey in 1986 known as Brillstein-Grey Entertainment. Grey, who died in 2017, would later leave the company to become the head of Paramount Pictures.
Bep’s clients have included Brad Pitt, Brendan Fraser, Florence Pugh, Cole Hauser, Adam Sandler, Kaley Cuoco, Robe Lowe and Sarah Michelle Gellar, among others. Its television producing credits have included “The Sopranos,” Disney+’s “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” and Apple TV+’s “Central Park.”

Paradigm Talent Agency has named 14 new partners as the firm seeks to rebuild its stature in Hollywood.
Paradigm went through transformative struggles during the pandemic period that led to the company selling off its lucrative music and touring division to Casey Wasserman’s enterprise. In addition to cleaving off its music arm, the firm lost numerous agents and clients to layoffs and defections.
Monday’s promotions make it clear that the new-model Paradigm will focus on film, TV, publishing and theater, representing actors, writers, directors and producers as well as packaging TV series and movie properties. Last September the company also launched Paradigm Media Entertainment, a division to represent local and national news anchors, meteorologists, sportscasters, producers and other news and host talent. Paradigm kickstarted its way into the TV news biz with the acquisition of three speciality agencies: Napoli Management Group, Two Twelve Management and 3 Kings Entertainment.

CEO Bob Beitcher wrote in an open letter sent to industry members the next day that, since the onset of the pandemic, the organization, which provides social services and residential options for currently employed and retired entertainment workers, had incurred a massive operating shortfall largely stemming from Covid-related expenses and lost earnings from philanthropic events.

Wasserman Music has acquired Paradigm UK’s live music representation business, expanding its global client roster and deepening European footprint as it adds to the Paradigm North America live music division acquired last year.
The business has 24 agents and a total 72 staff, representing what Wasserman described as a “world class roster” of pop, rock, electronic and hip hop artists.
As part of the deal, UK partners Dave Hallybone, Alex Hardee, Tom Schroeder and James Whitting have joined the Wasserman Music managing executive team.
The London partners founded what was then Coda Agency in 2002 before partnering with Paradigm in 2014 and fully coming under the Paradigm name five years later. Ron Burkle’s Yucaipa was a minority partner in the company.
“I am incredibly proud to reunite Alex, Dave, James, Tom and their team with the full force of our Wasserman Music group,” said Casey Wasserman, Chairman and CEO of Wasserman.

Issa Rae, Cedric the Entertainer and Leslie Jones were among the attendees at the star-studded Chairman’s Party inside SoFi Stadium on Thursday night, grooving along as Usher commanded the stage.
Just before heading into the event, Jones told Variety that she’s eagerly anticipating another concert — the Super Bowl Lvi halftime show featuring Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eminem and Mary J. Blige.
“‘California Love,’ that’s what I would want to hear,” Jones said, referencing Tupac and Dr. Dre’s iconic track. “And anything from Mary.”
While the comedian is known for her live commentary of the Olympics, it’s up in the air whether she’ll tweet the Super Bowl.
“It depends. If they give me some tickets, I’ll come; if not I’ll be at home in front of the TV cheering like everybody else,” Jones quipped.

LeBron James’ consumer and entertainment shop The SpringHill Company has closed a minority stake sale to a consortium of investors, bringing its valuation to $725 million.
As Variety reported last month, the investors include RedBird Capital Partners, Fenway Sports Group and Nike. Also included in a Thursday announcement was Epic Games, which will usher the NBA legend’s company and its CEO Maverick Carter into the world of gaming. Uc Investments, an early participant in the company, has also expanded its position.
While the size of the stake on the table was not disclosed, insiders said James and Carter maintain controlling interest.
The investment will “enable SpringHill to significantly expand its current businesses of IP development, commerce, content, brand consulting and live events,” the company said.
Founded in 2020, SpringHill has mostly operated in the content space. However, the company seeks to break further into sectors like apparel and events, establish an...

LeBron James’ content company SpringHill is in advanced talks to secure a significant strategic investment from a consortium including Fenway Sports Group, RedBird Capital and Nike, insiders told Variety.
While the NBA legend and his longtime business partner Maverick Carter have expressly told potential suitors they are not looking for a full acquisition, sources said the new investment partners would flush the operation with cash and value the entity between $650 million and $700 million. A representative for SpringHill did not immediately return requests for comment.
While this deal will be structured differently from, say, the recent $900 million transaction around Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, it places SpringHill firmly in the mix of the M&a craze consuming Hollywood.
Nike was previously reported to be eyeing the shop that helped make “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” but the arrival of RedBird and Fsg to the table alludes to James and Carter’s ambitions.

If Gov. Gavin Newsom is recalled next week, the entertainment industry will lose a valuable ally in Sacramento.
The industry’s top concern at the Capitol is the film and TV tax credit, which provides a 20-25% discount on eligible production spending in the state. In July, Newsom signed a two-year expansion of the program, bringing it to $420 million a year, and indicated he would support making that increase permanent.
With the exception of former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, the leading Republican candidates to replace Newsom all oppose the film incentive.
Radio host Larry Elder, who has led in the replacement polls since entering the race in July, has long been against giving tax credits to Hollywood. He sees the program as “hypocritical,” given Democrats’ support for higher corporate tax rates on other industries.
“I find it interesting that Hollywood pulls that lever for the Democratic Party, that raises taxes,...
