The first season of “The Rings of Power” has officially come to a close with an “unexpected” finale as the “Lord of the Rings” prequel series explores the lives and events that took place thousands of years before J. R. R. Tolkien’s trilogy of books (and subsequent films). And along the way, audiences learned how Mordor was created, that the elves were in danger of dying, and there were plenty of signs that evil was, in fact, reemerging.
As showrunner Patrick McKay previously teased to Et, “Some mysteries may be answered, so answers may provoke new mysteries.” And that’s exactly what the final episode of the season does, making good on those “several big booms” he promised were coming later in the season.
Not only that, but Morfydd Clark (Galadriel), Charlie Vickers (Halbrand) and Benjamin Walker (High King Gil-galad) react to the revelations offered in episode eight, including...

Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Queen Regent Míriel), When it comes to marquee sci-fi film franchises, The Lord of the Rings is right up there with Star Wars and Star Trek. The cachet carried by the previous projects, Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, is immense. So when plans were announced for a big-budget TV series taking place in J.R. Focus Features has acquired worldwide rights to Boy Erased, the coming-of-age and coming-out drama from writer/director Joel Edgerton based on Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith, and Family by Garrard Conley.
Academy Award nominee Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea) will star opposite Academy Award winners Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman.
The movie will be produced by Anonymous Content and will begin production this fall for a 2018 theatrical release. Focus chairman Peter Kujawski made the announcement today.
The film will tell the story of Jared (to be portrayed by Mr. Hedges), the son of a Baptist pastor in a small American town, who is outed to his parents (Ms. Kidman and Mr. Crowe) at age 19. Jared is quickly pressured into attending a gay conversion therapy program – or else be shunned by his family, friends, and church. It is within the program that Jared comes into conflict with its head therapist (Mr. Edgerton).
“I’m excited to work with an ensemble of actors, seasoned and new, to bring Garrard’s story to the screen. I think Focus is the perfect partner on this, and I will always thank Garrard for trusting my passion for his life story. I can’t think of a better reason to get behind the camera again,” said Mr. Edgerton.
Boy Erased is being produced by Mr. Edgerton and Anonymous Content’s Kerry Kohansky-Roberts and Steve Golin, an Academy Award-winning producer of Best Picture Oscar winner Spotlight. Executive-producing the film are Rebecca Yeldham, Ann Ruark, and Anonymous Content’s Kim Hodgert and Tony Lipp. Josh McLaughlin, recently promoted to Focus president of production, will supervise the project for the company.
Mr. Conley’s book was first published last year by Penguin Random House, and was issued earlier this year in paperback. Mr. Edgerton has written the screenplay adaptation; Boy Erased will be his second feature as director following the sleeper hit The Gift (also produced by Ms. Yeldham), which earned him a Directors Guild of America Award nomination. He was recently a Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award nominee for his performance in Focus’ Loving.

Logan, which hits theaters March 3rd, is going to be a decidedly strange effort as far as X-Men movies, Marvel movies, and “superhero” movies. The first trailer offered very little of the plot, but showed an aging Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) covered in scars, and an old, frail Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart). Apparently in a world where mutants have been “conquered,” a young mutant appears and our duo has to protect her.
That trailer didn’t offer much about X-23/Laura (Dafne Keen), but we now learn that she is something along the lines of Wolverine 2.0, complete with claws and feral attitude.
The film looks out of place enough, and that’s not a bad thing, given that we seem to be jumping genres to some degree, but now it becomes even more clear that the film probably avoids a lot of action in service to the exploration of deeper themes.

Loving is wonderful, warmly romantic drama about the couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, whose Supreme Court case struck down laws that prevented interracial couples from marrying. Although the court case is part of the story, the film is really about the couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, childhood sweethearts whose deeply romantic love story is the heart of this excellent, touching film.
Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter, Mud, Midnight Special) directs this fine, realistic, gentle romance story, with fine performances by Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton as the couple. The couple’s beautiful love story is the heart of this film.
Audiences expecting a courtroom drama and in-depth legal discussions about the pivotal Loving v. Virginia Supreme Court case may be surprised by Loving.

While the movies have brought us many great sports films over the decades, boxing seems to hold a special place in film history, and has brought us some of the true classics of cinema history. And even as boxing has become less popular among the general American public, Hollywood’s love affair with pugilism has kept going strong. The twenty-first century has already brought us such acclaimed boxing films as Ali (2001), Million Dollar Baby (2004), Cinderella Man (2005), Rocky Balboa (2006), and The Fighter (2010). Now, director Peter Segal has entered this particular sub-genre with Grudge Match, a boxing comedy starring Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone. While it certainly won’t be counted among the great boxing films or the great sports comedies, it’s a fun little movie that’s worth a look if you’re interested.

Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro go mano-a-mano in this first preview of Warner Bros. Pictures’ comedy Grudge Match
Award-winning movie legends Oscar winner Robert De Niro (“Raging Bull,” “Silver Linings Playbook”) and Oscar nominee Sylvester Stallone (the “Rocky” films, “The Expendables”) star as old boxing rivals who come out of retirement for one final match.
De Niro and Stallone play Billy “The Kid” McDonnen and Henry “Razor” Sharp, two local Pittsburgh fighters whose fierce rivalry put them in the national spotlight. Each had scored a victory against the other during their heyday, but in 1983, on the eve of their decisive third match, Razor suddenly announced his retirement, refusing to explain why but effectively delivering a knock-out punch to both their careers.
Thirty years later, boxing promoter Dante Slate Jr., seeing big dollar signs, makes them an offer they can’t refuse: to re-enter the ring and settle the score once and for all.

The Wolverine Review didn’t exactly surprise us, although we perhaps pretend that it did a bit. I think in the end we knew that it wasn’t going to completely meet up with our expectations. On the other hand, I guess the truth is that it did meet mine pretty well. I recognize the flaws and problems, but I just don’t mind them that much.
Hugh Jackman was great, and the story worked awfully well. The long and short of things probably comes down to Shane’s view, and where you fall when getting his take on things. He had a lot of problems, and certain elements of the film’s layout really ticked him off, but at the end he still gave it 3.5 stars, and it’s usually the sort of thing that would drop his rating to the floor.
We also have a go at the upcoming Metallica film,...
