Fresh off leading yesterday’s Golden Globe nominations in seven categories with The Shape of Water, writer/director Guillermo Del Toro has announced not one, but two upcoming projects! The first is a supernatural film called Antlers, which he will produce and Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart and Black Mass) is attached to direct. The second is a remake of the 1947 film-noir Nightmare Alley, which del Toro plans to direct himself and cowrite with Kim Morgan, according to Variety. Antlers was written by Henry Chaisson and Nick Antosca and is based on a short story by Antosca. It follows a teacher who tries to protect one of her students after learning a disturbing secret about his family. It sounds like an intense ride for...

Guillermo del Toro keeps packing his schedule for his year long sabbatical away from directing. The filmmaker has already penciled in interviews with Michael Mann and George Miller, though he’s not quite sure what he’ll do with the results just yet. Now, he’s adding two more projects to his slate.
Variety reports that del Toro has signed up co-write and direct a remake of the 1947 film noir, “Nightmare Alley.” The classic film stars Tyrone Power as a swindling carnival barker who eventually gets outmatched by a woman with an equally strong scheming streak.

When “Call Me by Your Name” screened at the New York Film Festival last month, several threads from Timothée Chalamet’s 21-year-old life wove together. Above the sold-out, 1,100-seat audience at Alice Tully Hall, he watched the second half from the balcony, seated next to the actor who plays his lover, Armie Hammer, and their director, Luca Guadagnino. Onscreen, Chalamet’s character was 17, the same age he was when Guadagnino met him. At that time, Chalamet was a student at Fiorello H. Laguardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts — the Upper West Side inspiration for “Fame” — across the street.

Hollywood is a creature of habit, so there’s an element of inevitability surrounding the renewed interest in adapting Stephen King stories for the screen. With 2017 having so far seen both ends of the spectrum in cinema – The Dark Tower failing at the box office, while It broke records – all bets are now off as we wait to gauge reaction to the adaptation of Gerald’s Game that’s about to arrive on Netflix. King himself has recently stoked the fire of curiosity, though, by suggesting to Vulture that brand new adaptations of The Stand and Salem’s Lot could be on the cards.
“There’s talk about doing The Stand as an extended TV series, possibly for Showtime or CBS All Access, and there’s been some interest in developing Salem’s Lot as a feature, probably because people are saying, “Well, we took an old miniseries called It...

Hollywood has countless projects that fall into that unholy circle known as Development Hell, where no matter how hard everyone tries, the picture just can’t get in front of cameras. “The Man In The Rockefeller Suit” is one such film, and it has been puttering around for over a half-decade as directors like Scott Cooper, Walter Salles, and Pablo Trapero all came and went.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood’s real-life drama about airline pilot Sully (Warner Bros.) far surpassed all expectations, making nearly $10 million more than my prediction with an opening weekend of $35 million in 3,525 theaters, also making it one of the biggest openings for a movie opening the weekend after Labor Day. The Screen Gems thriller When the Bough Breaks disappointed compared to some of their similar releases, taking second place with around where we predicted with around $14 million. The lower profile animated film The Wild Life (Summit/Lionsgate) did end up in fifth place behind Don’t Breathe and Suicide Squad, but with a measly $3.3 million in 2,493 theaters. As expected, Relativity’s theatrical return with its own horror/thriller The Disappointments Room...

Rosamund Pike and Daniel Brühl are in talks to topline “Entebbe,” Working Title’s Palestinian drama about the true events surrounding Operation Entebbe and the hijacking of an Air France plane in 1976. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actors will portray two German hijackers.
In the summer of that year, an Air France plane with 258 passengers was hijacked by two members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and two members of the German Revolutionary Cells. The thriller’s title comes from the hostage-rescue mission carried out by commandos of the Israel Defense Forces at Entebbe Airport in Uganda.
The film will be directed by Jose Padilha with a script by Gregory Burke.

Attendance down 4% as festival closes with Steve Jobs.
The BFI London Film Festival has recorded attendance of 157,000 across film screenings and events and an additional UK-wide audience of more than 10,000 for its 59th edition, which closed last night with Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs.
The festival, which ran Oct 7-18, could not match last year’s record-breaking attendance of 163,300, plus 12,000 UK-wide.
This year’s Lff screened a total 238 fiction and documentary features (down from 248 in 2014), including 16 world premieres, eight international premieres, 40 European premieres and 11 archive films including five restoration world premieres. The line-up also included 182 live action and animated shorts.
Year of the strong woman
Lff 2015 was branded “the year of the strong woman” and opened with Sarah Gavron’s period, political drama Suffragette, which saw feminist protesters storm the red carpet.

More and more, the festivals Venice and Telluride introduce multiple Oscar contenders before they move on to wider audiences in Toronto and/or New York and London. Venice opened with"Everest" (Universal, September 25), Baltasar Kormákur's superbly executed alpine survival adventure, which boasts a strong ensemble cast, but will likely be relegated to technical Oscar categories. Johnny Depp, making a comeback bid with spooky blue contact lenses as murderous Boston thug James "Whitey" Bulger, and supporting actor candidate Joel Edgerton earned initial praise for Scott Cooper's solidly commercial gangster pic "Black Mass." But the grisly Warner Bros. film, in which Bulger murders countless people with his bare hands, played better at Venice than Telluride, where Cooper made a point that the movie doesn't glamorize gangsters. But it may be too tough for many Academy voters. Playing well at both fests was another Boston drama, writer-director...

He then took the high spirits into the press conference, where he talked about his chilling portrayal of real-life Boston villain James "Whitey" Bulger, in the crime drama "Black Mass." Entering in a lime-green jacket and trademark tinted specs, Depp assured the press pack that what looked like a beer bottle was non-alcoholic and that if he slurred his words, "it's your fault." He was certainly sharp as a tack in graciously getting the conference adjudicator off the hook when she referred to Depp's co-star Dakota Johnson as Dakota Fanning. "My name is Dakota Fanning," said Depp. "I changed my name last week." And when the first question was whether he had to find "some evil in himself" to play a mass murderer who ruled South Boston for more than 20 years, he quipped: "I found evil in myself a long time ago and I've accepted it. We are old friends.

The 40th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival now has something of a slate. Festival toppers Cameron Bailey and Piers Handling presided over a press conference Tuesday morning where more than 34 films were announced including the world premieres of "The Martian," "The Family Fang" and "Demolition." It's an intriguing initial lineup for the venerable Canadian institution and something of a steadying the ship after losing some major debuts to Venice, Telluride and the New York Film Festival over the past few years. Well, maybe. The most impressive world premieres include the aforementioned "Demolition" with Jake Gyllenhaal (officially the best opening night film in recent memory), "The Family Fang" with Nicole Kidman, "Legend" with Tom Hardy, "Trumbo" with Bryan Cranston, "The Martian" with Matt Damon and Lance Armstrong doc "The Program" with Ben Foster and Michael Moore's latest documentary, "Where to Invade Next." The Wrap is reporting Warner Bros. and CBS Films are in talks with Showtime to mount one hell of an interesting deal with regards to the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's massive, post-apocalyptic tome "The Stand". Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) was brought on board to write and direct an adaptation of King's novel back in February 2014. He was the latest in a long line of filmmakers that had taken a crack at "The Stand" including David Yates, Ben Affleck and Scott Cooper and it appears he's going to be sticking around and in a big way. When we last heard from Boone on the project he said, "We're going to do four movies and we're going to do 'The Stand' at the highest level you can do it at, with a cast that's going to blow people's minds. We've already been talking to lots of people,...

Many directors have tried and failed to mount Stephen King's seminal postapocalypse novel The Stand as a big-screen feature — among them, Ben Affleck and Scott Cooper — and now, The Fault in Our Stars helmer Josh Boone has figured out a unique way to tackle that mammoth book: According to the Wrap, he'll first adapt it as an eight-part television mini-series for Showtime that will culminate with a massive movie in theaters. Ron Howard pitched a similar approach to King's The Dark Tower series when he intended to direct a big-screen trilogy bridged by TV mini-series installments, but that innovative incarnation eventually fell apart. This won't be the first time that The Stand has made for a major television event, either: Mick Garris directed an ABC mini-series based on the book in 1994, starring Gary Sinise and Rob Lowe.

If there was any lingering doubt about the Telluride Film Festival's place in the annual film awards season, this year's Oscars outcome ought to finally settle them. With its victory Sunday night, "Birdman" became the sixth Best Picture winner in seven years to screen at the Labor Day Colorado event. The festival's press profile increased more and more in the wake of big early bows of films like "Brokeback Mountain," "Capote" and "Juno." "Slumdog Millionaire" really lit the fuse in 2008 and with it, films like "The King's Speech," "Argo" and "12 Years a Slave" have begun their journeys there "unofficially" before "official" world premieres at the Toronto Film Festival, while others like "The Artist" and "Birdman" made it priority to stop there on the way to awards season releases. Other major awards season players that have played the festival as of late include "Up in the Air," "Black Swan," "127 Hours," "The Descendants,...

Like any human, I saw the posters for "Mortdecai," rose from my seat, and sprinted into a wall. What was this damn thing? Johnny Depp and cronies Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, and Olivia Munn wore silly mustaches and expected to seem, I guess, irreverent and wacky. Instead they looked like they were starring in a movie adapted from a Pringles can, and the world frowned. "Mortdecai" also underlined the fact that Johnny Depp's presence as a Hollywood titan has been transformed and warped in the past decade. He got a taste of that Jack Sparrow hokum dollar and never looked back. Or if he did look back, he did it with a woozy Keith Richards glance that makes everyone with brain cells roll their eyes. Let's make Johnny Depp cool again. Here are six ways he could regain some of the "it" factor that kept him seeming bad-ass for...

Well here's something you don't see too often. Just two months out from a planned March release, Warner Bros. has moved Ron Howard's "In the Heart of the Sea" all the way to Dec. 11, 2015. Let's all make the silly pun together: that's right in the heart of the Oscar season. The studio has a couple of options to play with on the prestige side next year. There's Joe Wright's "Pan" in the summer. There's Scott Cooper's Whitey Bulger biopic "Black Mass," though that's lingering in a weird September corridor at the moment. There's "The Intern" from Nancy Meyers in November and then there's one of the most anticipated films of the year for me, Jeff Nichols' "Midnight Special," also in November. So there isn't a whole lot to play with for awards, I guess. Or a lot of question marks, anyway. So this is either faith...

A new year of films may beckon, but there are lots of movies from 2014 you may have missed. Here's a list of 2014's most underappreciated...
There was no shortage of magnificent films in 2014 of every kind, from the expensive and explosive to the low-key and experimental. But it's a sad fact of life that not all movies do as well as they should, either because of poor distribution or simply because they'd been released at the same time as something much bigger and more star-laden.
While the list below is by no means an exhaustive one - there are plenty of great films from 2014 that we're still getting around to seeing - it's our attempt to highlight a few fine pieces of work that didn't get quite as much love as they deserved.
So without further ado - and in no particular order - we'll start with a stunning...

For the second consecutive year, Warner Bros. Pictures International has exceeded the coveted $3 billion mark at the international box office. This benchmark comes on the heels of the release of The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, which surpassed $400 million at the international box office this weekend and is still going strong.
Nine Warner Bros. Pictures films have exceeded $100 million internationally, topped by Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (with Paramount Pictures), which has taken in an astounding $467 million outside of the U.S. to date, and Godzilla (with Legendary Pictures), which has earned $327 million overseas.
Four titles – Doug Liman’s Edge Of Tomorrow (with Village Roadshow Pictures), Phil Lord & Christopher Miller’s The Lego Movie (also with Village Roadshow Pictures), and Noam Murro and Zack Snyder’s 300: Rise Of An Empire (with Legendary), along with the 2014 spillover grosses from The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug...

If there was any doubt that the Oscar-season engine is roaring, events, Q&As, screenings and all that jazz is at a fever pitch — and it isn’t even Thanksgiving yet. Today’s big moment belonged to reigning Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey, who got his star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame followed by a lavish lunch at Spago in Beverly Hills hosted by Paramount Chairman Brad Grey and attended by his Interstellar co-stars Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain (who was excited to sit next to Martin Landau and hear his Actors Studio stories) and Mackenzie Foy, along with director Christopher Nolan and producer/wife Emma Thomas and brother Jonathan, with whom he co-wrote the screenplay. Oh, and did I forget to mention Paramount also invited scores of Academy members to celebrate with Matthew? His family including kids and wife Camila Alves were at the ceremony, and Alves also came...

This morning was like Christmas for TV and Emmy fanatics, and among the nominees this year, as usual, were a slew of former Oscar winners. In the acting categories this year, it was no surprise to see Matthew McConaughey chalked up for his work in HBO's "True Detective" just four months after completing a near run of the movie awards season table that culminated in a Best Actor Oscar win for "Dallas Buyers Club." Will HBO's decision to put the show in the drama series category rather than miniseries hold him back from an Emmy, given the potential bounty of goodwill for Bryan Cranston and the final season of "Breaking Bad?" We'll soon find out. Joining McConaughey in the category was "Usual Suspects" and "American Beauty" star Kevin Spacey, nominated a second-straight year for Netflix's "House of Cards. In the supporting actor ranks, Jon Voight, Oscar winner for 1978's "Coming Home,...

Even though it was already made as a TV miniseries in the 1990s, Stephen King's epic "The Stand" has the sprawling scope befitting a big screen treatment. And indeed, Warner Bros. has been working hard trying to make it happen, with David Yates, Ben Affleck and Scott Cooper all mooted to direct at various points in the past. But earlier this year, the studio locked down the not quite obvious choice of "Stuck In Love" and "The Fault In Our Stars" director Josh Boone. And while this weekend sees him in weepy teen movie mode, the filmmaker promises to bring some big brass ones for this effort. "We’re gonna do one three-hour, R-rated version with an amazing A-list cast across the board," he told Vulture. "Every single one of those characters will be somebody you recognize and somebody you relate to. And it’s gonna be awesome. I’m really excited.

After Scott Cooper, Ben Affleck and David Yates all left the project, Warner Bros. finally signed The Fault In Our Stars director Josh Boone to helm their ambitious adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand. Why ambitious? Well, the plan is to condense the 900-page novel into just one movie -- quite an undertaking as anyone who's read the book will attest to. You may remember the ABC miniseries back in 1994 with Gary Sinise, Rob Lowe and Molly Ringwald among others, which ran over 6 hours and still didn't manage to cram near enough in. But, Boone has done his best to ease fan concerns in an interview with Vulture. "We’re gonna do one three-hour, R-rated version with an amazing A-list cast across the board. Every single one of those characters will be somebody you recognize and somebody you relate to. And it’s gonna be awesome. I’m really excited.

Earlier this year it was revealed that Josh Boone would direct and do a script rewrite for the film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand after both Ben Affleck and Scott Cooper previously dropped out of the project. With the complete and uncut version of The Stand totaling over 1000 pages, it was uncertain whether the new adaptation would consist of more than one film. But now Josh Boone has revealed how the epic story will be told on the big screen. Here’s what The Fault in Our Stars and Stuck in Love director had to say about adapting The Stand in a recent interview:
“We’re gonna do one three-hour, R-rated version with an amazing A-list cast across the board. Every single one of those characters will be somebody you recognize and somebody you relate to. And it’s gonna be awesome. I’m really excited. It’s...

Out doing promotional rounds for his new film adaptation of the beloved novel "The Fault in Our Stars", director Josh Boone spoke about another high profile adaptation he currently has in the works - Stephen King's magnum opus "The Stand".
King's 1152-page book charts a battle between good and evil after America is decimated by a deadly pandemic that wipes out most of the country's population.
Numerous directors from Ben Affleck to Scott Cooper were linked with the project and opted out, mostly because adapting the property into one film is generally seen as basically impossible.
Boone however plans to give it a go, revealing that his take on the material will be three-hour R-rated adaptation with a big cast. Boone is also a gushing King fan, telling Vulture:
