Barcelona’s Lionel Messi has broken the 40 year old record set by Gerd Mueller for total goals scored in a calendar year.
Mueller, known by fans as “the torpedo”, first set a record of 85 goals in a year in 1972 when he scored 72 for Bayern Munich and a further 13 for Germany. That record has stood, until now. The man they call “the flea” has blown Mueller’s record out of the water by bagging a sensational 86 goals this year, making him a dead cert for a fourth successive “World Player Of The Year Award” when the results are announced next year.
The Argentinian first equaled then broke the record by scoring twice in his sides 2-1 win against Real Betis on Sunday in La Liga, which Barca are dominating this year. The Catalan’s lead third place rivals Real Madrid by eleven points, and are six ahead of Atletico Madrid in second.
