The third episode of The Bachelorette's sixth season, which took up two ours of our lives Monday, reinforced the dual tenets of the long-running reality series in our mind:
You cannot take The Bachelorette seriously, even a little bit You can still enjoy The Bachelorette a lot despite point #1
Seriously, if you view this as a real quest for love, rather than contrived nonsense, you're really kidding yourself. If love happens, great. But it's just not what it's all about.
That said, it can still be a very entertaining show if you view it through a prism of skepticism and believe nothing. And DVR it and skip the commercials. Two hours? Yeesh.
Our celebrity gossip site's far more exhaustive and entertaining The Bachelorette recap shares this view, simultaneously pointing out the absurdity and pure entertainment.
Some highlights of last night:
Ali Fedotowsky in the bathtub: Never bad for ratings.

After their pilot episode snagged the Grand Prize at the 2009 Escapist Film Festival, creator Brett Register and his producing team of Rick Rey and Paula Rhodes knew they were on to something. At that point the show was called Dorian's Quest, but after a name change to A Good Knight's Quest, the team set out to shoot a 24-episode gamer comedy web series that would run on The Escapist Magazine's site in weekly installments. "I'm a huge fan of the Escapist, I have been for years, ever since I was in college," said Register. "I always wanted to do an 80's style show, like my own Masters of the Universe web series—the bad movie not the cartoon TV show." To launch the series, the team hosted a well-attended La premiere at the Capitol City Hollywood on Monday night. When a video game princess crosses over into the real world,...

All eight episodes of the new Web series Compulsions are available for viewing, and we have the first here for you to check out in its entirety. Dark, suspenseful, and violent, Compulsions explores three seemingly "normal" people who act on their darkest desires.
The first independently produced original series released by Impulsive Productions LLC, Compulsions tells the tale of Mark Sandler, who holds a dull desk job during the day and is a professional sadist at night. His best friend and colleague, Justine Davis, is a sweet-appearing innocent blonde who can pistol-whip like the pro she is. And then there’s Mark’s co-worker Cassandra Morrissey, a diligent hard-working It geek who is an unrepentant voyeur, using her It skills to spy on employees at home and work – including Mark. And don’t expect a tidy ending to Season One. These characters are just getting started!

We knew we hadn't seen the last of the engine room on the Us Azureas when things left in a black hole cliffhanger this past spring. Sci-fi comedy web series The Crew is coming back for a second season next week after singing an exclusive deal with online video site Babelgum. For creator Brett Register, who had been using the hiatus from the show to roll out a number of short experimental web series like Craig and the Werewolf, he said he is excited to be able to pay his talent and crew this time around. "We were indeed able to pay everyone who worked on the show this season, which was amazing as the tagline when producing season one was, 'don't worry about money, we'll all get paid in season two,'" quipped Register. "Who knew that'd turn out to be true!" While it's not exactly TV-level money going around,...

The funny thing about my own Fantastic Fest journey this year is that of all the films that we're reviewing on this site, I seem to be taking all of those that are animated. Which is great, because as you know, I love me some animated goodness. I also love me some animated weirdness, which leads me to the oddball space opera Journey to Saturn, from Denmark. I mention the film's Danish roots specifically because it wears that fact like a badge of honor. In fact, most of the humor in this often gross, mostly inappropriate adult cartoon seems to be directed at the Danish people, the Danish government and the drunken way of the Danes. It was all very interesting, I assure you. The story follows a misfit group of astronauts hired by a prominent businessman to travel to Saturn and mine it of it's usable natural resources. The plan is to claim Saturn in the...

If there’s one thing to be said about Craig & the Werewolf, it’s that it doesn’t beat around the bush with its premise. Three seconds into the first episode, we see Craig’s roommate gnawing on a bloody, severed hand. Five seconds later, Craig enters the apartment, freaks out, and demands to know what’s going on. Six seconds after that, we get the quasi-apologetic answer: “Sorry, I totally forgot to tell you! I’m a werewolf.” As with many other web series out there (Real Life with Married People, for instance), Absolute Disaster’s Craig & the Werewolf relies upon brevity of content to create a tight, fluff-free product. However, again as with many other web series out there, this show is also frequently a victim of its own attempts at streamlining. Here’s what makes Craig & the Werewolf fun to watch: it takes the classic “frustrating roommate” scenario and puts a bizarre,...

This wasn't initially intended as a Q&A interview, as we don't usually do that about a web series that hasn't even been fully shot yet and doesn't even have any major distribution lined up. But sometimes you have to break the rules to get to the good stuff. Zack Finfrock makes a great case study of an indie web series creator starting where a whole host of other would-be web stars are too—with an idea, a teaser trailer, limited resources, oh and some unusually talented friends. Finfrock's series, Emerson Wild, centers around a young man (Emerson) who's taken it upon himself to hunt monsters, trudging his way up the ranks of the monster hunting community. We've seen similar stabs at this casual, everyman play on superhero bureaucracy, most recently with Captain Alpha Male and The Junior League of Superheroes. As of now only a (long) trailer is out,...
