Ace Eddies: ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ ‘Everything Everywhere’ win over Oscar rivals for Best Film Editing
“Top Gun: Maverick” got a big boost in its bid for Best Editing at the Oscars with a win at the Ace Golden Eddie Awards on March 5. It prevailed in the drama race at these awards bestowed by American Cinema Editors over two of its Oscar rivals –“Elvis” and “Tár ” — as well as “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Woman King.”
Another of the Oscar nominees, “Everything Everywhere All at Once ” won the comedy/musical category over the fifth Oscar contender, “The Banshees of Inisherin,” plus “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”, “The Menu” and “Triangle of Sadness.”
Since 1990, the film that came up with one of the ACEs went on to win the top prize at the Academy Awards 18 times, including the 2020 winner for best drama editing, “Parasite.” And in 10 of the 14 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, at least one of the Eddie champs was a contender for Best Picture.

American Cinema Editors announced winners in 14 categories March 5 during the 73rd annual Ace Eddie Awards. And all five Oscar nominees were included among the nominations — though spread out between two categories.
Historically, the Eddie winner for theatrical drama has also won the Academy Award 13 of 22 times‚ but not in the last three years. Whether or not that streak will hold remains murky since Oscar nominees “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” both took home trophies.
“The Woman King” director Gina Prince-Bythewood received the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, while film editors Lynne Willingham and Don Zimmerman received Career Achievement Awards.
Other winners included awards season faves “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “Fire of Love,” and “The Bear.” See the complete list of winners, marked in bold, below.

Jenny Slate is on top of the world right now thanks to “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On,” the Oscar-nominated hit stop-motion film that she stars in and co-wrote alongside Dean Fleischer Camp and Nick Paley. But while the comedian is enjoying the film’s success, she hasn’t forgotten the failures that led her to write it. In a new interview with The Independent, Slate opened up about the painful experience of being let go from “Saturday Night Live” after one season in 2009 and the solace that she found in prioritizing her own creative projects.
“I felt grief leaving ‘SNL,'” she said. “But it also made me double down on my own specific voice as a stand-up comedian because that was all I had left.”

Filmmaker Dean Fleischer Camp’s Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is a tonic. His incredibly endearing and novel mockumentary follows a 1-inch tall shell, who wears shoes, and who has managed to capture the imagination of so many on the big screen after he initially found fame on YouTube. For those who are yet to meet him, Marcel, voiced by Jenny Slate, lives in an Airbnb with his Nana Connie and pet lint Alan and ponders the big and small questions in life, delicately drawing the audience into his miniature yet epic existence. The feature film came to be after seven long years of meticulous writing, planning, recording and brainstorming in order to create the utterly delightful spontaneous and immersive life we see on screen. Marcel asks you to question your perceptions of death and family while captivating with his daily perambulations, be they using sticky honey feet to...

Jenny Slate is pretty memorable as an entitled dry-cleaning client twirling a chihuahua around her head in Everything Everywhere All at Once, but it’s her role as an animated shell with one googly eye that really captured attention this season. In Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, we’re given a full-length feature version of the character Slate co-created with director Dean Fleischer Camp back in 2010. Voicing Marcel and leaning into her improv skills to help cook up the comedy character’s quirky and poignant dialogue, Slate explains why she thinks Marcel’s miniature perspective has inspired so many, and why this gig suits her so much better than SNL ever did.
Deadline: Years ago, you came up with the voice of Marcel when you and Dean and some friends were squashed into a hotel room at a wedding. What part of you was speaking through Marcel back then?...

The Writers Guild of America has released the ballots for their film categories for their annual WGA Awards, and while it is always notable what scripts are deemed ineligible due to the guild’s more restrictive qualifications, this year has a wide variety of significant cuts.
Looking at the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay categories in particular, the WGA requires that a film be written under the WGA Minimum Basic Agreement, or under a similar collective bargaining agreement with a WGA-approved organization for international titles. Consequently, many independent, international, and animated features are left out of contention including already decorated scripts like Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin,” an NYFCC Best Screenplay winner, and Charlotte Wells’ “Aftersun,” the Best Screenplay winner at this year’s British Independent Film Awards.

It’s hard to think of an indie film released in 2022 with more widespread appeal than “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.” The mockumentary about a tiny shell searching for community first made headlines for its adorable animated protagonist, but soon developed a large adult fanbase for its poignant message about adapting to life’s challenges.
In her review of the film, IndieWire’s Kate Erbland wrote: “In a time beset with films consumed by questions of connection, community, and change, ‘Marcel the Shell’ seamlessly marries big ideas with charm and humor (and inventive stop-motion work to boot). In short, it’s the cutest film about familial grief you’ll see all year, perhaps ever.”
The film’s intergenerational popularity has not been lost on Jenny Slate and Dean Fleischer Camp. The longtime collaborators co-wrote the film — based on a character they created together — with Nick Paley, and Camp directed...

How do you define a “big” movie? By impressive box office numbers? Enthusiastic critical reception? The highest-profile stars, boldest headlines, brightest debuts?
No matter which method you choose, it’s nice to note that the year’s biggest films were, overall, also among its best. So this list assumes you’ve already seen the ones that fit into all of the above categories: movies like “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” but also “The Fabelmans,” “Nope” and “Tár.” Now it’s time to look a little deeper, think a little smaller: foreign films, documentaries, indies, and even kid flicks. This year's Film Independent Spirit Awards – the 38th — announced their nominations. And it's shaping up to potentially be a very good ceremony for Everything Everywhere All At Once, TÁR, Women Talking and more.
The awards will be handed out on 4 March, though other details are in flux: broadcast for the last few years on us cable channel IFC, the ceremony's organisers are currently looking for a new TV home. Still, the celebration of indie movies will go ahead as planned.
And while the Indie Spirits don't tend to be a huge Oscar indicator, we'd expect at least a few of the nominees to also show up on the Academy Awards nominations list, to be announced on 24 January.

In news that will delight the nostalgia lover in you, "Marcel the Shell With Shoes On" has officially qualified for consideration in the animated feature film category at the 95th annual Academy Awards this year. Those of us who have been utterly in love with that little shell since he debuted on the internet in 2010 are completely overjoyed, but also feel a little old thinking about his long journey to awards season.
Alongside our favorite shell's new film, which takes our stop-motion hero into a live-action setting, Richard Linklater's "Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood" and the animated documentary "Eternal Spring" have also been deemed eligible by the Motion Picture Academy's short films and feature animation branch executive committee.

ABC has given a pilot order to a character-based procedural drama from top TV and film writer Drew Goddard and ABC Signature, where Goddard and his Goddard Textiles are based.
As Deadline reported exclusively last week, the project, based on TF1’s popular detective series Hip (High Intellectual Potential), had been a frontrunner for an order as part of a fall round of ABC pilot pickups. The network had set an early, mid-October script delivery date deadline for a few projects that were in more advanced stages of development to contend for what I hear are about two or three pilot orders.
2022 ABC Pilots & Series Orders
The premise of the untitled drama, written by Goddard and targeted for the 2023-24 season, evokes Good Will Hunting. In it, a single mom with three kids and an exceptional mind helps solve an unsolvable crime when she rearranges some evidence...

Exclusive: ABC is developing a character-based procedural drama from top TV and film writer Drew Goddard and ABC Signature where Goddard and his Goddard Textiles are based. I hear the project, based on TF1’s popular detective series Hip (High Intellectual Potential), has been a standout and is looking good for a fall “second cycle” round of pilot pickups, which ABC is planning. Hulu Nabs ‘Phony’ Comedy From ‘Marcel the Shell’s Nick Paley With Big Commitment; Drew Goddard To EP
Exclusive: In a six-way bidding war, Hulu has landed Phony, a half-hour project from Marcel the Shell with Shoes On co-writer Nick Paley. Hulu would not comment but I hear the project, which has been laid off at ABC Signature, has received a script-to-series commitment with a big, seven-figure penalty. ABC Signature-based Drew Goddard, writer of The Martian and creator of Marvel’s Daredevil series, is joining as an executive producer.
Written by Paley, Phony is a coming-of-age mystery described as Freaks and Geeks trapped in The Twilight Zone. It follows Sonny, a popular high school kid, who wakes up after a strange car accident and discovers his mom has been replaced by an impostor.
Paley executive produces with Charlie Alderman as well as Goddard and Sarah Esberg through Goddard’s ABC Signature-based Goddard Textiles production company.

Here’s a new film that proves that the unlikeliest of movie heroes can emerge from the most unexpected places. And this hero is really unlike the action icons who’ve been dominating the multiplex for the last couple of months. He has no spacecraft like Lightyear, nor a fighter jet like “Maverick” or even a cape like Doc Strange and Thor. He does have…a shell. Yes, while many films have been taken from books, TV shows, and comic books, this one sprung from the worldwide web. Actually, it’s an extension of three online short films that started delighting viewers since 2010. Oh, and short is the word, as this fella’ has to navigate in our everyday world, which just towers over him. But somehow there’s a big, big following for Marcel The Shell With Shoes On. And it just might grow larger, while he remains “teeny-tiny”.

Short-film star Marcel the Shell from the viral shorts “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” is embarking on a feature-length journey.
Comedian Jenny Slate, screenwriter Dean Fleischer-Camp and screenwriter Nick Paley reunite to explore more of Marcel’s story. The upcoming A24 film, “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” was developed after two short films of the same name, created by Slate, Fleischer-Camp, Paley, and producer Elisabeth Holm, in 2010.
More than a decade later, the trio has elaborated on Marcel’s backstory in this feature film. The “beloved character” Marcel, voiced by Slate, embarks on a journey to find his missing family. The screenwriting trio maintains Marcel’s quirkiness and friendly demeanor through the highly anticipated stop-motion mockumentary.
But, how exactly can audiences watch Marcel the Shell’s journey?

“Have you ever eaten a raspberry?… And what was that like?”
In “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On,” even the smallest questions are the stuff of immersive world-building. The film, a hybrid of stop-motion and live action, tells the story of Marcel, a one-inch-tall creature voiced by Jenny Slate who allows human documentarian Dean to observe his life. Marcel and Dean ponder parallel lonelinesses: Marcel’s entire family has disappeared except for his grandmother, Nana Connie (voiced by the legendary Isabella Rossellini), and Dean is processing a breakup. As Marcel reveals his strange and inventive day-to-day activities, which include using a tennis ball for transportation and sleeping on a slice of white bread, Dean shares them with the internet, and the masses resolve to help Marcel find his community.
Marcel first appeared in the viral short film of the same name that Slate and Camp wrote and produced in 2010, when they were a couple.

After so much bad news over the past – oh, it’s been awhile – many viewers might be in the mood for entertainment that’s a little sweeter, gentler and kinder. Enter the adorable and effortlessly charming Marcel the Shell (Jenny Slate), a one-eyed, child-like anthropomorphic shell living in an Airbnb with his grandmother, Connie (Isabella Rossellini).
They are the only two shells remaining in the home after a devastating upheaval tore their community away from them when the couple (Rosa Salazar and Thomas Mann) who lived at the house split up, accidentally carrying off Marcel’s family and friends. But these two tiny creatures have since learned to survive, making the best of their microscopic world through creative means.

A24 is most notable for their filmography in the horror genre (i.e. “Midsommar” and “Hereditary”), but their latest feature aims to be more lighthearted than almost anything they’ve set their sights on previously.
On Tuesday, A24 released the first teaser trailer for Dean Fleischer-Camp’s “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On,” a live-action/animated comedy film from a screenplay by Jenny Slate and Nick Paley, based on a story the three of them created with Elisabeth Holm back in 2010.
Slate reprises her voice role as the titular Marcel, an anthropomorphic shell living with his grandmother Connie. Joining Slate in the cast are Rosa Salazar, Thomas Mann, and Isabella Rossellini.
The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on September 3, 2021. It is produced by Fleischer-Camp, Slate, Terry Leonard, Holm, Andrew Goldman, Caroline Kaplan, and Paul Mezey.

In 2010, when filmmaker Dean Fleischer-Camp and then-partner Jenny Slate made the three-minute short “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On,” they couldn’t have predicted the fame to come. Over a decade later, the viral hit about the talking seashell who rambles off charming life philosophies has been adapted to a surprise feature-length film that landed at Telluride this week without warning.
The movie’s existence after all this time is the result of a long journey for the two collaborators, who separated in 2016. The original “Marcel” short (which played Sundance and AFI) found Slate voicing the eponymous stop-motion shell with a single googly eye who made charming, high-pitch observations about his low-key life. Following the viral acclaim, Fleischer-Camp and Slate made a sequel in 2011 followed by a pair of illustrated children’s books. In the meantime, the filmmaker and standup comedian fielded serious offers for a character they never expected...
