Euro Box Office Stats For 2021
While European box office in 2021 recovered well from 2020, up 42% to 3.8B euros ($4.23B), the year was still 57% down on pre-pandemic takings in 2019, data from the International Union of Cinemas shows. Unic, which reps European cinema trade associations and operators, said in its preliminary findings that admissions increased by an estimated 38% in 2021, with over 590M visits across the region. Cinemas in many markets were closed in the first part of the year, and moviegoing came back in a big way in the second half, thanks to such tentpoles as Spider-Man: No Way Home, No Time To Die, F9, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Dune. Comparing results for the second half of 2019 with the same period in 2021, revenues for the markets where data is available were on average 35% below pre-pandemic levels including France (-22%), the UK (-26%), Russia (-29.5%) and Poland (-24.3%). “Breaking Point,” a feature about breakdancing from the directors of hit film “StreetDance 3D” will get its sales launch at EFM.
Directed by Dania Pasquini and Max Giwa, who helmed both “StreetDance 3D” and “StreetDance 2,” “Breaking Point” is described as “an adrenaline fuelled, high energy deep dive into the world of breakdancing.”
HanWay Films are handling worldwide sales for the film, which goes into production in April.
“StreetDance 2” alum Niek Traa will reunite with Pasquini and Giwa for the new feature, choreographing the dance scenes. Some of the world’s top international breakdancers, including Kid Karam, Roxy and Jilou, will also appear in the film.
“StreetDance 3D” was the highest-grossing independent British film of its year.

Stranger Things is a phenomenal show and anyone that says otherwise is a fool. That is why I got really excited when I found out Stranger Things: The Game was out in anticipation of Season 2. The game looks to help fill in what was happening in Hawkins, Indiana between Season 1 and Season 2. It was great to see all of my favorite characters again and get immersed in the 16-bit world. Then, after Season 2 came out, we had the awesome opportunity to unlock Max, the new girl from the show. One would notice something strange about her in the game.
Max has psychic attacks. Ever since we met Max and her step-brother Billy, I thought they were both going to be kids like Eleven and Eight. Kids with supernatural gifts that were trying to stay away from the evil scientists. Sadly, the show seemed to have killed that theory of...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In honor of Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird,” what is the best coming-of-age movie ever made?
Siddhant Adlakha (@SidizenKane), Birth.Movies.Death.
While it may not fit the western paradigm of a traditional coming of age film (neither a high school setting nor teenage angst or confusion find themselves the focus), “Lion” holds the distinction of being a rare modern movie that gets to the root of key questions of dual identity, questions that will only become more prominent in the age of globalism. It’s the most extreme version of having your feet in two cultures; Saroo Brierley (Sunny Pawar, Dev Patel) finds himself...

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for the ending of “Stranger Things 2,” also known by traditional TV fans as “Stranger Things” Season 2.]
Well, that was a neat and tidy ending.
After bringing in more characters, building more stories, and digging deeper than ever into the mythology of the Upside-Down, “Stranger Things 2” ended rather simply: Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) closed the gate, cutting off the Shadow Monster’s access to the real world and killing all the demodogs in the process. No one hugely significant died (sorry Bob), good triumphed over evil, and all looks quiet headed into Season 3.
Not quite.
Though technically all of that is true and the second season of “Stranger Things” ended on less of a cliffhanger than the first, its cliffhanger was bigger.

As The Police blasted “Every Breath You Take” over the Snow Ball, the camera crept out to a wide shot of Hawkins Middle School… and began to spin.

There’s a blunt charm to the exposition dump throughout “Ghosted’s” 22-minute pilot that probably shouldn’t come across. Characters relentlessly badger each other for information. Introductions are made without set-up, and the inexplicable is explained in just a few words. So much emotional backstory is spat out so quickly that it’s hard to see the first episode as anything more than set up. But hey, it’s still fun. Why? For the reasons you already know — all two of them.
Tom Gormican’s (“That Awkward Moment”) new series about an ex-cop and a former professor brought together to investigate paranormal activity lets its main draws shine through in the first episode, as Adam Scott and Craig Robinson prove to be just the pair of gumshoes needed to save the show from itself. Even with welcome comparisons to a comedic “X-Files,” the “Ghosted” pilot relies completely on the...

In the overcrowded TV landscape, it’s easy to fall behind on even favorite shows. This past spring has been particularly overcrowded with must-see series jockeying for awards attention.
But now that the official season has come to a close, that gives some breathing room to check out other series that premiered over the past season. For one reason or another, these shows may have been overlooked or maybe started off on the wrong foot and lost viewers’ attention. It happens. Even TV critics haven’t gotten around to watching some of the best shows due to time constraints and Peak TV.

This is definitely Not your Dad's Marvel TV show. And that's a very good thing.
Visually dazzling, whipsaw smart, subversive, yet with surprisingly wacky comedic elements, Legion Season 1 Episode 1 is one of the most innovative takes on the somewhat overdone superhero genre in many a year.
What really makes this one so good is the work of actor Dan Stevens, who plays our troubled hero David Haller.
Seems that David has been diagnosed with mental illness since childhood, which was hilariously depicted to the old Who tune "Happy Jack."
The whole look and feel of this show is just different, almost as if it takes place in the mod London 1960's.
David: It's just Thursday. Like the 260th Thursday as a passenger on the cruise ship "Mental Health." On the plus side I've mastered eating with a spoon.
Amy: You're getting better. The voices - you're not seeing things that aren't there?...

For quite some time there’s been a fan theory that claims that “Breaking Bad” is the prequel to “The Walking Dead.” While it seems far-fetched, a new video by Netflix dives deeper into this theory and links the two series together.
“What if ‘Breaking Bad’ was about more than Walter White starting as a bumbling chemistry teacher and turning himself into a full fledged monster?,” the voiceover begins. “What if he turned everyone into full-fledged monsters?”

It's not easy to get an indie film made these days. Especially not through studios and traditional financial methods. That's why, all around the globe, crowdfunding websites like Kickstarter are becoming more and more popular among first-time/early career filmmakers.

Aiming to shed some light on these films that don't have the might of a major studio's marketing team behind them, here's our list of 25 upcoming British movies that have been crowdfunded, and could turn out to be brilliant...

iZombie wrapped up its second season tonight with back-to-back episodes. I already offered some overall thoughts on the season after last week's outing, so let's get specific on the finale, coming up just as soon as I'm a squad leader of my Call of Duty World League challenge team... We know from the Meat Cute massacre in the season 1 finale that this show can do impressive zombie action when it's of a mind to. But the carnage at the Max Rager party was much bigger and more elaborate than I'd have expected. If it wasn't as technically impressive as the Walking Dead version would have been, it was so much fun, and so character-focused — whether Clive declining to be scratched, Liv being forced to kill the Romero'ed Drake (who only wound up that way because he was the good guy Liv always believed him to be), or Major finally getting...

Reading tea leaves and predicting the future is at least part of the job description of someone who covers movies on a daily basis. After all, there is so much content out there that no one can effectively write about it all. Instead, you have to pick and choose, and in a lot of ways, before you ever see a film, you are passing judgment just based on whether or not you cover this or that detail. For example, what should we make of the news that Max Landis, David Ayer, and Will Smith are closing in on a deal to have Warner Bros. make their film Bright? After all, Ayer and Smith both worked on Suicide Squad, which isn't out until the end of the summer, and Landis has been attached to a number of high profile films, with Chronicle still his biggest hit. If Suicide Squad was giving the studio any trouble,...

We love a good mashup around here and the more awesome the things being put together, the more awesome the combined creation. So, when you take the recently great Mad Max: Fury Road and combine it with the always great Star Wars (we mean that in the classic sense) the result is even greater that the sum of its parts. Check out the trailer for Road Wars: The Imperator Strikes Back. The conceit of the idea seems to be this. What if everything that happened in Fury Road didn.t take place on a post-apocalyptic Earth, but rather the desert planet of Tatooine. There are two moons in the sky, Sandpeople taking shots at the caravan, and at one point Max Rockatansky nearly falls in the Sarlacc pit. Just your normal day on the home planet of Luke Skywalker. Honestly, if Tatooine had been the home to the film we...

One of the great wonders as a young kid is coming across a story, a book, for the first time and completely falling in love with it. It may be the characters, the elaborate setting, or the fantastical elements of said story that keeps you coming back for more. An attachment is born, a link to a certain story that grows over time, allowing you to get lost in another world time and time again. The Fiction #1 takes this concept of the power of imagination within fictional stories to the literal level. What if you were actually transported to the very setting you were reading about and were able to interact with the characters within?

Films like Walking on Sunshine make you think al-Qaeda might have a point after all. Like anybody else, I’ve got serious problems with the basic tenets of Islamic Fundamentalism, but it’s got to be better than this. Produced with a cynical eye towards snaring World Cup widows, this 80s jukebox musical is a stunningly accurate simulation of being manacled to a chair in a dodgy karaoke bar and forced to watch a bunch of jerks tunelessly disembowel pop standards.
Set in Italy, our heroine Taylor (Hannah Arterton) arrives on holiday to find that her big sister Maddie (Annabel Scholey) is getting married. But oh no! Big Eyes is the story of a husband and a wife, and a defining moment in history where art and commercialism intersected for the first time. Before there was Warhol, there was Margaret and Walter Keane. Walter, a con artist, took credit for the true artist, Margaret’s work for years. As a maniacal salesman, he twisted the truth to serve his means, and invented the system of mass art reproduction. The frenzy surrounding the Big Eyes paintings marks the birth of the “pop art” movement, and eventually redefined what it means to be “kitsch.” The historic relevancy alone is enough to pique my interest, but I have a more personal connection to the paintings as well.
When I was a kid, the first piece of real artwork we ever had in our home was a “Big Eyes” print by Walter Keane – or so we thought. My Dad Max bought...

It's the eve of Parenthood's last season - a fact Monica Potter, who plays Kristina Braverman, still hasn't quite accepted. The cast and crew were just about a week into shooting the final episodes of the NBC drama when I stopped by the set. Monica took a seat next to me on the couch in the Bravermans' house after wrapping a scene, settling in as comfortably as she might in her own living room. "I have hope that we'll come back next year," the actor says. "And I'm the only ding-dong walking around saying that. I just . . . I don't know." It's not hard to understand why Monica feels a little reluctant to let go. After more than four years as Kristina, she's seen her character through her teen daughter's coming out, a run for mayor, and even breast cancer; that storyline eerily corresponded to Monica's own irregular mammogram in...

R.L. Stine doesn’t exactly sympathize with victims in horror movies. “When I go to a movie or something, and the shark jumps up on the screen and eats the girl, I’m the one in the theater who’s laughing,” the Goosebumps author tells EW. “Horror always makes me laugh.”
Something else that makes Stine laugh? Mostly Ghostly: Meet My Ghoulfriend, a film based on Stine’s Mostly Ghostly book series that coms to DVD Sept. 2. The “wonderful” What If isn’t the only romantic comedy coming out of the indies this year. In late September, we’ll have Two Night Stand, which asks: “What if a one-night stand lasted for two nights, how hilarious would that be?” The film stars Miles Teller and Analeigh Tipton. It is the directorial debut of Mike Nichols’s son Max. Watch the trailer below and remember to always check the next day's forecast immediately before having sex with someone.

Let's get one thing out of the way from the off. Walking on Sunshine, a jukebox musical featuring all your favourite pop hits from the '80s, can in no way be recommended to anyone under the guise of being "a good movie". The story ticks off every rom-com cliché in the book, the characters have all the appeal of third-degree sunburn, the acting frequently hits pantomime levels and the production values on both the recorded tracks and song and dance numbers leave something to be desired.
Yes, Walking on Sunshine really does make Mamma Mia! look like Citizen Kane. And yet, despite all this, you can't take your eyes off it for a second. One thing you can't accuse this film of is lacking in car-crash entertainment value.

In the opening titles to Walking on Sunshine, a trashy musical celebrating the classic hits of the 1980s (as if we need to) – it says “directed by Max and Dania”. It’s somewhat odd not to include their surnames – but when we proceed into this rather insufferable piece of filmmaking, you can see why they were maybe a tad embarrassed to reveal their full names (it’s Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini, by the way).

After an overcast start to the festival Saturday, the weather was finally crisp andclear Wednesday, helping to draw a robust crowd to the 2,700-year-old Teatro Antico. The stars were out for the day's and evening's events as organizers also honored 10 star Bo Derek

A pair of new clips from the upcoming musical Walking on Sunshine has been unveiled, and they're corkers.
The incredibly cheesy (we're guessing that's the point) scenes sees Hannah Arterton perform a cover of Whitney Houston's 'How Will I Know' after spotting a hunk emerge from the sea.
Leona Lewis also appears in the clip, which marks her big screen debut.
The film - which features songs from the 1980s - sees two sisters (Arterton and Annabel Scholey) fall for the same man when they both take a holiday abroad.
And if that wasn't enough, we also get to hear the cast's rendition of Katrina and the Waves' 'Walking on Sunshine', which gives the film its title.
The jukebox musical features covers of George Michael, Wham!, Huey Lewis and the News and Cher.

What if the biblical "Valley of the Shadow of Death" was a real place? That's the story Shadow Walk explores. I had an opportunity to interview writer Mark Waid (Kingdom Come, Superman: Birthright, Captain America, Daredevil) about his upcoming graphic novel.
How did you become involved with Legendary?
I’ve known Bob Schreck forever, and we'd been looking for something to work on. Thomas Tull had the basic idea of the story and was looking for someone to help flesh it out. I sat down with him, and it couldn’t have gone better. I will freely admit that I fully had my shields up, because I figured some movie guy is going to come and tell me how to write comics. But in fact it was the exact opposite, and Thomas could not have been more humble and more eager to learn the of medium and comics.

I am a big time Jessica Jones nut. I read every issue of Alias (mainly because I really dug Brian Michael Bendis’ stuff and the Max line at the time – and Alias was the two combined). When The Pulse came out, I started reading that. I had a copy of the New Avengers Annual #1 where she gets married as I was also following New Avengers at the time. I even have a copy of the What If comic where Jones joins the Avengers and prevents the House of M from occurring.
So when I heard a few years ago that someone was trying to bring Alias to the small screen, I was over the moon. Sure they would have to change the name, lest it gets confused with a certain other show starring Jennifer Garner. So I was happy with it being called Aka Jessica Jones. Sure whatever, as long...

Among the most wonderful things in Brian Percival’s film adaptation of The Book Thief is the relationship that forms between a courageous young girl named Liesel (Sophie Nélisse) and her foster father, Hans Hubermann (Geoffrey Rush).
Liesel has just been sent to Germany as World War II is about to break out. While many make her feel like a stranger to their hometown, Hans tries to make her feel as welcome as possible. Pretty soon he is teaching her how to read and she begins keeping a vocabulary of all the words she learns.
When the country is thrust into war, things change rapidly as the Nazis begin burning books and the Hubermanns lend shelter to Max, a Jewish refugee whose father saved Hans’ life during World War I. From there, both Max and Liesel form a friendship that is bound by their love of words, and Liesel finds...
