Yesterday, all their troubles seemed so far away.
In 2022, Peter Rosza and Conor Woulfe sued Universal Pictures after they rented the 2019 movie “Yesterday” on Amazon Prime Video and subsequently felt they had been bamboozled by the trailer. The film, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis, is a zany musical fantasy in which Himesh Patel, a struggling musician, is bonked on the head and wakes up in a world in which The Beatles Never Happened. As such, he starts playing their songs as if they are his own and the movie follows the expected Preston Sturges-like tropes you might expect.
The trailer for the movie featured quite a few glimpses of the alluring Cuban-born actress Ana de Armas, later Oscar-nominated for her leading turn in “Blonde,” who ended up not being in the movie at all. An early cut included her character, but that storyline was shaved down after the movie tested poorly.

Christopher Nolan has built his name up over the years to the point that he’s widley considered the greatest director or our generation. His latest film, Oppenheimer, seems bound to finally win him an elusive best director Oscar. But, in the wild build up to his latest movie, many failed to consider his last movie, Tenet, which was unusually divisive for the director. With it set for a nationwide re-release next month, now’s a good time to look back on a movie that’s winning more and more fans every year.
Tenet was born from a simple idea that came to him while making his breakout hit Memento over 20 years ago. While putting that film together, he thought of a single image that helped him crack the way in which to tell a backwards story. The image was that of a bullet being sucked out of a wall.

Good Grief Movie Review(Photo Credit –IMDb)
What’s Good: The film’s emotional beats feel pretty genuine, and that feels unique even when the setup and execution are a bit artificial
What’s Bad: Many lines of dialogue are too on the nose, and some characters sometimes act weird, confusing their motivations.
Loo Break: Yes, there are a couple of loo breaks, as some conversations or situations might not be interesting enough to hold everyone’s attention on the film.
Watch or Not?: This is a must-watch film if you are in the mood for something quite melancholic.
Language: English (with subtitles).
Available On: Netflix
Runtime: 100 Minutes.

The 2024 Netflix film titled Good Grief gets trapped in the beautiful scenery and aesthetic obsessions of London and Paris, and for a moment, it forgets that it has some grave things to explore. Grief is a universal emotion, and some have it worse than others, but it really is a luxury in this world to get a chance to sit with that emotion and process it. There are people in this world who don’t even get a second for themselves as they are buried with responsibilities. Good Grief is not set in that kind of world.
It is, to put it mildly, a film set in a world of opulence and a lot of leisurely feeling. Marcus (Dan Levy) and Oliver (Luke Evans), a gay couple living in London, have an open marriage, and neither one of them is ready to admit that there are problems in their arrangement.

This article contains some Good Grief spoilers.
For the entirety of Good Grief, I couldn’t look away from Dan Levy’s sweater: that excellent cable-knit style popularized in recent films like Knives Out, yet here in a lovely dove gray unlike the usual preppy cream. It was also radically different from the black-and-white jumpers he modeled as David Rose in the dramedy Schitt’s Creek, establishing that queer character’s distinctive fashion sense in a uniform that would recur even with his emotional development. Yet it feels like a costuming through-line to Levy’s next memorable character, widower Marcus, in his feature debut as a writer-director.
Here the sweater signifies the very human desperation to hold on to something of the past, even when it brings us pain. As Marc learns through his own figurative unraveling after a year of grief, a memento like that doesn’t have to be...

[The below contains minor spoilers for Netflix film Good Grief.]
As a publicist, Megan Zehmer helped navigate Schitt’s Creek’s rise from beloved CBC comedy to streaming juggernaut that eventually won seven Primetime Emmys for its final season in 2020.
Some two years on from that awards show, Zehmer found herself after hours at the Musee de L’Orangerie on a location scout in Paris for Levy’s directorial debut, Good Grief, which was also Zehmer’s first film as a producer. Remembers Zehmer of the moment, “I was thinking: My god, I first met Dan at some random building in downtown L.A., and there was a man in the office next to us clipping his toenails, and now we’re sitting in L’Orangerie by ourselves for this movie that we’re making.”

A sensitive but almost fatally self-absorbed death drama that has much to say and little to feel, Dan Levy’s “Good Grief” is determined to convince you that life is better confronted than run from; in the plainspoken words of a character who brings the message home in the movie’s final minutes, “to avoid sadness is also to avoid love.” The moral is true, but the delivery feels unconvincing at the end of this movie, a story of private loss and shared friendship that reflects its protagonist’s struggle to integrate the two.
But if Levy’s Netflix film proves to be a strangely precocious debut for a 40-year-old success who already has a hit TV show to his name (Levy co-created “Schitt’s Creek” and steered the sitcom throughout its run), its broad and unrelentingly fabulous characters still manage — if only by accident — to convey something about grief that...

Schitt’s Creek co-creator, Dan Levy, brings us an authentic tale of complicated love, gut-wrenching loss and anguished healing in his directorial debut, Good Grief – currently streaming on Netflix. Serving as writer, director, producer and lead actor in the comedy-drama, Good Grief serves as a reminder of the well-rounded talents of Levy himself, above all else. Yet, the film arguably leaves viewers wanting more – and not in the way Levy may have intended.
Good Grief sees Dan Levy play the role of Marc Dreyfus; a married painter turned children’s book illustrator struggling to deal with the losses of his husband and mother. The film follows Marc’s grief alongside his ragtag best friends, Thomas (Himesh Patel) and Sophie (Ruth Negga), each with their own problems in love. While Marc combats the sheer emptiness that comes with the tragic death of your other half, Thomas ponders why he is unable to...

We’re happy to report that after five days, all of our New Years Resolutions are still intact. Except for the one about doing 20 minutes of yoga in the morning. Impossible. And the one about not eating the entire bag of potato chips in one sitting. Yeah, nah. Oh! We also didn’t stop doomscrolling, smoking or clipping our toenails at the gym. But other than that? Perfectly on track. And while there are still two long months of awards season left to endure enjoy, the New Year has brought a bountiful crop of Don’t-Miss Indies.

The debut feature from the Schitt’s Creek co-creator is well-intentioned but bogged down by artificial dialogue and unfunny jokes
Dan Levy, the son of Eugene and co-creator of TV comedy Schitt’s Creek, has made an agonisingly well-intentioned and indulgent feature debut with a bittersweet relationship dramedy for which he is writer, director, producer and star, set in and around various tasteful upmarket properties in London and Paris. The need for emotional honesty is a theme, and audiences are entitled to wonder if the role played by wealth in soothing broken hearts deserves to be discussed more openly here than it is.
Levy plays Marc, an artist and illustrator whose talent is being smothered, just a little, by the career of his superstar writer husband, Oliver (Luke Evans), whose work has spawned a multibillion dollar movie franchise. Marc is happy in the relationship but grieving the recent loss of his mother.

A nearly unrecognizable Sofia Vergara playing a cartel boss, a new retelling of the story of the Uruguayan rugby team that crash-landed in the Andes in 1972, Kevin Hart assembling a team for a daring heist and Dan Levy dealing with loss and grief are among the standout projects hitting Netflix this January.
Spanish director J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow lands on Netflix on Jan. 4. The film is the latest cinematic retelling of the miraculous story of the Uruguayan rugby team that crash-landed on a glacier in the heart of the Andes in 1972, with the survivors being forced to resort to extreme measures to stay alive. After debuting in Venice, Society of the Snow has picked up plenty of awards on the international film festival circuit, and it recently made the shortlists in four categories for the 2024 Academy Awards, including best international feature film.

The London and Paris locations are pretty, the likable cast all look stylish in their voluminous coats and slouchy pants and distressed knits, and the countless teary-eyed close-ups are designed to touch our hearts. But Netflix’s Good Grief, despite its characters’ extensive soul-dredging, is all surface, perfectly watchable but a little dull. Working both behind and in front of the camera after having cut his teeth directing episodes of Schitt’s Creek, Daniel Levy has made a first feature that’s a glossy drama of love and loss and the restorative power of friendship. But it’s more earnest than affecting.
The opening scene makes this, if not a Christmas movie, then a Christmas-adjacent one. Levy plays Marc, a London artist who has put aside his own creative work to serve as illustrator on the best-selling series of fantasy novels written by his adored husband, Oliver (Luke Evans), about telepathic truth-seeker Victoria Valentine,...

It’s one thing to direct an episode of the sitcom on which you appeared for six seasons. “Schitt’s Creek” star Daniel Levy aced that exercise back in 2020, earning an Emmy for co-helming the series finale. But it’s an entirely different challenge to write and direct a smart, sensitive original feature in which you also play the lead character — a feat Levy deftly achieves with New Year’s tearjerker “Good Grief,” giving those unsatisfied with the rest of Netflix’s fluffy Christmas fare something substantial to kick off 2024.
The first week of January seems a fitting time to release a film about three friends shedding their skin for the next chapter in their lives. Appropriately enough, Levy’s debut also sees him leveling up as a more serious storyteller than we’d given him credit for. Considering his hilarious multiple Emmy-winning work on Schitt’s Creek, this markedly different feature filmmaking debut as writer-director-producer and star from Daniel Levy is a revelation — and a welcome one. The appropriately titled Good Grief explores exactly what that name implies, as Levy uses his own experience as an impetus to paint a larger picture of love, loss and grief in all its complexity. But at its heart, this impressive if sometimes tonally dicey story is also about the complications — and importance — of friendship in a scenario that revolves around a trio of BFFs who take a life-changing trip to Paris and get more than they each bargained for.
The opening sets the stage, as we meet Marc (Levy) at a holiday party in the spacious and impressive London apartment, where his flamboyant and successful filmmaker husband Oliver (Luke Evans) is sucking up all the energy.
Marc is an artist (his poignant paintings that play a part in the film’s finale are by Kris Knight) but clearly lives in the shadow of his more famous partner. But it seems to be a life they both love.
In the crowd are Marc’s good friends, the vivacious and lively Sophie (Ruth Negga) and Thomas (Himesh Patel), the latter once a romantic interest for Marc before their breakup and his subsequent relationship and marriage to Oliver. However, tragedy rears its head, as Oliver heads out from the party to grab a cab to the airport and dies in a head-on collision before leaving the street.
The grieving process begins but doesn’t end with the emotional funeral for Oliver, and it all comes to a crescendo a year later and in another holiday season, where friends Sophie and Thomas convince Marc it is time to move on, and one way to do it is to finally read the card Oliver had left him for him as he took off that fateful evening.
In it is far more than he ever bargained for, and to say it provides complications is an understatement. Those only pile up when Marc and Oliver’s lawyer Imelda (Celia Imrie – wonderful) reveals Oliver had a lavish Paris apartment, the existence of which he never shared with his husband. “I guess now is not the time to talk about your will,” she deadpans.
Joined by his two best friends for what they think will be finally a snapping-back-to-life for Marc, the trio heads off for a fun few days to Paris, but unbeknownst to them, Marc is privately on a mission to discover the answer to all the secrets left behind by Oliver, with whom he apparently had an open marriage, a plot point tossed in and given oddly short shrift in Levy’s script.
Although this offers plenty of melodramatic opportunities for Levy, he fortunately resists laying on the soapy elements. It really is just as much a chance to focus on three individuals whose own problems hit the boiling point in different ways that not only reveal truths for each, but also their longtime connection to each other. The balancing act in a movie that is largely about the process and the price of grief is formidable for the debuting filmmaker, who is better known for his comedic chops. But it is just promising enough to make us look forward to where he goes next. The guy is a quadruple threat and an assured talent.
Levy’s ability for directing actors and giving them juicy roles is evident immediately with choice turns by both Negga, sensational as the freewheeling and fun Sophie, and Patel, who is completely believable as he winds himself up in a frenzy at the individual and unexpected actions of his buddies.
It is also a credit to Levy, who lets both of these exceptional actors steal all the scenes they are in. Even though Levy’s Marc is at the center of this, he is somewhat weighed down, having to first play so much grief, and then the complex reaction to the dark situation Oliver has handed him in death.
There are others in the mix as well including Arnaud Valois as Theo, a brief attraction for Marc in Paris that turns into an opportunity to escape the hold Oliver still has on him, and Medhi Baki as Luca, a mystery man with a key to answering some of the unanswered questions.
Emma Corrin also turns up briefly as a performance artist, as does Kaitlyn Dever. But neither has much to do. Evans hits all the right notes as Oliver, even if his presence in the story is felt more offscreen after his character’s early demise.
Paris has never looked more inviting than it does here with Ole Bratt Birkeland’s sumptuous cinematography. The handsome production design of both the London and Paris apartments is perfectly handled by Alice Normington, as are the flashy fashions of costume designer Julian Day. A big shoutout to Rob Simonsen’s music score, and the soundtrack delivered by music supervisor Season Kent, with some terrific songs from the likes Bonnie Raitt, Elton John and especially Neil Young’s haunting evergreen “Only Love Can Break Your Heart.”
Producers are Levy, Megan Zehmer, Debra Hayward and Kate Fenske. Executive producers are Stacey Snider and Caroline Levy.

Schitt’s Creek was a certified cultural phenomenon, earning critical raves, nine Emmy Awards during its final season and massive ratings for Netflix when it migrated to the streamer from its original home at Pop TV. The series also delivered a curious situation for co-creator, show runner and star Dan Levy when he brought a follow-up project to Netflix in the form of a dramatic feature film debut called Good Grief.
“This movie came to be when I was experiencing some loss and some grief in my own life and was asking a lot of questions and didn’t know what to make of those feelings,” Levy explained Tuesday at the premiere of the film at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre. (Though he didn’t mention it on stage, Levy lost his grandmother during the pandemic.) “When you’re a writer, sometimes all you can do is put pen to paper and hope that something happens,...

He might still be best known for the comedy stylings of Schitt's Creek, but Dan Levy's series also had a rich vein of emotion running through it. For his cinematic directorial debut, he's learning even more into heavier feelings. Good Grief finds a man struggling with loss and learning new truths about his life. See the trailer below:

With a script also by Levy, the film will be in select Stateside theaters from 29 December, and then hits Netflix globally on 5 January.

When his husband Oliver unexpectedly dies, Marc's world shatters, which ends up sending him and his two best friends, Sophie and Thomas, on a soul-searching trip to Paris that reveals some hard truths they each needed to face. After Dan Levy first created "Schitt's Creek" back in 2015, he and the Television Gods rested on the seventh day, looked back at the game-changing series, and declared that it was good. Since its finale in 2020 left fans itching for more, however, Levy has attempted to fill that hole by staying inordinately busy. He soon lined up a new animated series called "Standing Up," he's maintained a steady presence on the other side of the camera through appearances in HBO's "The Idol" and Netflix's "Sex Education" (sandwiched in between a cameo in Disney's "Haunted Mansion" remake), and he's now ready to unleash his feature film debut as writer and director with "Good Grief."
As the first major project coming out of his lucrative deal with Netflix, "Good Grief" promises to tell a deeply moving and heartfelt story all about -- you guessed it -- processing grief. If the moody music,...

Daniel Levy stars in his directorial debut, which he also wrote. Take a look at the first Good Grief trailer here.
2023 has proved to be a big year for actors turned directors. We’ve had directorial debuts from actors such as Patrick Wilson, Chris Pine, Anna Kendrick and Michael B. Jordan. Joining that roster of talent is Daniel Levy.
If that name doesn’t ring a bell, let’s shorten it a bit. Does Dan Levy ring a bell? The actor is best known for his role in Schitt’s Creek alongside his father, Eugene Levy, but Levy Jr. is now moving to directing with his Netflix feature film, Good Grief.
Take a look at the first Good Grief trailer.
It’s safe to say, we’re going to need a lot of tissues for this one. Levy plays a man who has recently lost his husband (Luke Evans) and escapes...
