After a rather tame show last month, the freewheeling Golden Globes are kind of back. Only now they go by the name the 30th annual SAG Awards, which had a whole lot of the Globes and the Emmys in their bloodstream Saturday.
Finally on Netflix proper after being relegated to the streamer’s YouTube channel last year, the 2024 SAG Awards is yet another shiv in the side of broadcast TV by Team Sarandos as the first awards show to stream live on the global streamer.

Also, it’s the first SAG Awards following last year’s SAG-AFTRA strike and eventual new agreement with the AMPTP. And there’s a new production team behind this year’s SAG Awards: Baz Halpin,...

As the town takes off for the holidays and comes to a virtual standstill, the Oscar race roars on as eagle-eyed pundits continue to fanatically parse yesterday’s release of the shortlist in 10 categories (3 of them shorts) that could, I said could, give clues as to the ways the Oscar winds are blowing towards the start of nomination voting on January 11.
Meanwhile, the level of Q&As, talk show appearances, various honors announcements coming almost daily from the Palm Springs and Santa Barbara Film Festival, nominations from Golden Globes and Critics Choice, plus invites to parties have kept us hopping ever since the SAG strike ended and actors could once again do what they do best – talk about themselves. The stars will have a place to dance after Sunday night’s SAG Awards.
People will host the show’s official post-awards celebration as the Dotdash Meredith publication returns for a 25th year. The afterparty will take place at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City, the same hotel that is hosting the SAG Awards. As part of the party collaboration, People will make a “significant grant” to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s emergency assistance programs, which helps performing artists facing life-threatening illness and severe economic hardship.
Per People editor-in-chief Wendy Naugle: “It’s an honor to celebrate the incredible actors and the outstanding performances that have moved and changed us. We are also proud to support the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, helping artists both in tough times, like during the pandemic, and exciting times, like when they first embark on their careers. We want artists to have opportunities for years to come.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNets — the arm formerly known as Turner — is parting ways with the SAG Awards after 25 years.
TNT has run the SAG Awards since 1998, including this year, when the Screen Actors Guild returned to a live, in-person event and moved to Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar (after being based at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall since 1997). NBC aired the first three years of the SAG Awards, which launched in 1995. TNT took over in 1998, and then TBS made it a simulcast in 2007.

Depending on who you ask, awards shows are dead, dying, or in need of intensive care. One potential lifeline could come from streaming. At least, that’s the hope of Amazon Prime Video and its new experiment, Monday’s Academy of Country Music Awards.
Why the ACMs? It’s not as random as you might think.
“Amazon customers love country music. The Country Heat station is one of our most popular on Amazon Music and recently announced 13 billion streams,” Amazon Studios chief Jen Salke told IndieWire. “We believe the Academy of Country Music Awards have the potential to reach an already robust audience of country music fans, deliver those customers a unique entertainment experience, and extend that experience across Amazon’s divisions.”
Amazon gained this fascinating award-show experiment out of CBS’ loss: In 2021, the ACM Awards drew 6.3 million total viewers on the broadcast network, an all-time low for the telecast.

SAG Awards Exec Producer Kathy Connell Announces Retirement, Previews Her Final Ceremony (Exclusive)
SAG Awards executive producer Kathy Connell, who helped launch the awards show 28 years ago and has been with the show ever since, has confirmed that this weekend’s ceremony will be her last.
“I am retiring,” she tells Variety. “It’s been 28 wonderful years. Well, last year was sort of interesting, but 27 wonderful years. It is time and I am looking forward to family and traveling. I couldn’t be more proud. I call it one of my two babies. One of my babies is a Title IX officer at Uc Irvine. And this is my other baby and, they’re both doing great and don’t need me anymore.”
Jon Brockett, who will executive produce Sunday’s SAG Awards with Connell, calls it a bit of an end of an era for the show. “Kathy’s been the leader of this ragtag band for a long time. I have...

SAG Awards Announces 2022 Production Team, Led by Executive Producers Jon Brockett and Kathy Connell
Jon Brockett has been tapped to serve as executive producer of the Screen Actors Guild Awards this year, joining returning EP Kathy Connell at the helm. Brockett had previously served as a producer on the show, and has been a part of the SAG Awards since its fifth show, while Connell has been with the ceremony since it began in 1995.
Brockett and Connell are a part of this year’s production team, which the SAG Awards announced on Thursday. Not returning are Hazy Mills Productions’ Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner, who served as EPs with Connell of the in-person 2019 and 2020 events, as well as last year’s pre-taped virtual special.
For 2022, as previously reported, the SAG Awards are shaking things up by moving venues, to Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar. There’s still no word yet on whether there will be a host for the show, which will air on Feb.

Despite the uncertainty that all of this season’s awards ceremonies are contending with around the impact of the Covid Omicron variant, the 28th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards are forging ahead with a Feb. 27 ceremony with safety at the top of the list.
“Right now, we’re just continually monitoring the situation and we’ll follow every local government, guild, state and city guideline we can to make sure that it’s as safe and healthy as possible,” says Jon Brockett, one of two executive producers of the SAG Awards. “Whatever shape and form that comes in, we’re still moving forward for an in-person show at this point and our goal is to create a really meaningful experience.”

The Screen Actors Guild is making at least one major change to its awards as it prepares to return to a live, in-person event: A major venue switch. After being based at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall since 1997, the 28th annual event is moving to Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar.
According to SAG Awards executive producer Jon Brockett, the decision to decamp for Santa Monica was a way to shake things up after being in the same facility for so long.
“We chose Barker Hangar because it’s a blank canvas,” he says. “We can create anything we want in this vast space that could accommodate all our needs including our carpet, showroom and post-awards gala.”
Located next to Santa Monica Airport, the 35,000-square-foot Barker Hangar is already a popular venue for awards shows, having housed the People’s Choice Awards, Critics Choice Awards, MTV Movie Awards, the...

For the SAG Awards producers, the seating chart is half the fun. How else would we have gotten that epic Gif of Titanic stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet hugging if they weren’t seated next to each other when DiCaprio won best actor at the 2016 show?
“It really is a living, breathing puzzle,” producer Dana Kenerson tells People. “That’s part of what makes it fun and part of what makes it different each year. It’s a painting, and it’s funny on show day to see that painting come to life. It’s fun to see how...
