Stars: Lelia Symingtonm Tyler Posey, Patricia Velasquez, Tate Hanyok, Julian Silva, Vico Escorcia, Stelio Savante, Erik Odom, Chase Mullins, Sidney Symington | Written and Directed by Eve Symington
Written and directed by Eve Symington, Brut Force is a modern female-led film that is very much trying to capture the spirit of classic film noir and present it in a new way for a modern audience. Symington and her Dp Emilie Silvestri also do something remarkable – they manage to create a wonderful dichotomy between the noir elements of the film and the sun-soaked world of California’s wine country, the beautiful landscape bathed in golden sunshine hiding a dark world in its shadowy underbelly.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
The Batman (Matt Reeves)
Over the 80 years of his comic book, televised, and cinematic existence, Batman has always grappled with his secretive dual identity. Bruce Wayne hobnobs and toasts champagne with fellow philanthropic one-percenters during the day, while his Caped Crusader alter-ego attempts to clean up Gotham City and its never-ending crime problem at night, a particularly torturous method of dealing with childhood trauma. But in The Batman, director Matt Reeves’ moody and riveting addition to the canon, that binary is mostly absent. The cape and cowl isn’t so much a nocturnal costume as it is around-the-clock attire. – Jake K. (full review)

A handsomely shot, gorgeously scored film noir set in California wine country, Eve Symington’s début feature Brut Force draws on her family’s talents and features a strong lead performance from her sister, Lelia Symington, as troubled journalist Sloane. As it prepared for release on VoD, I connected with Eve to discuss it and began by asking about the location and what drew her to it.
“My father, who plays Arthur, lives in that area, so I've been spending time there for about ten years and I always thought it was so, so gorgeous,” she explains. “And I thought that the difference between the way that it looks and the reputation of wine country and then some of these social problems, which I wanted to examine more closely, was a really interesting dichotomy and ripe for a noir film.

Ask most people who don’t live there to picture California and one of two things will come to mind for them: Hollywood or the beach. There’s a great deal to the state beyond that, however, and one of its most celebrated regions is its wine country, home to a wealthy elite and a luxury holiday destination for others. It’s admired for its beauty and for the contrast it presents with the hectic pace of life elsewhere. This is the setting for Eve Symington’s début feature, a noirish thriller played out in golden sunshine which peels back the skin to find corruption underneath.
Symington’s strongest asset in this film is her sister, Lelia Symington, who take on the leading role of Sloane, a journalist who was recently fired and has agreed to return to her hometown in response to concerns about how migrant workers are being treated there.

Finding a unique location to place a neo-noir––a genre usually synonymous with the concrete jungles of cities––Eve Symington’s directorial debut Brut Force is set within California’s central coast wine country. Acquired by XYZ Films for a video-on-demand release on April 21, we’re pleased to debut the exclusive trailer for the film starring Lelia Symington, Tyler Posey, Vico Escorcia, and Patricia Velásquez.
The film follows newly-fired reporter Sloane Sawyer (Symington), who hears that someone has been harassing vineyard workers in her hometown, so she starts investigating. When haunting beauty Dulce goes missing and the alluring Tico Reyes shows up looking for her, Sloane is drawn down a twisting trail of violence and crime, determined to help those she’s come to care about in this town… before it’s too late.

Actress Amber Midthunder, who is a regular on the CW series Roswell, New Mexico and previously co-starred in FX’s Legion, stars in The Wheel, an indie feature, which she also produced. Steve Pink is the director and also produced the pic. Pink is known for films like Hot Tub Time Machine 1&2, 2014’s About Last Night, and co-wrote the original High Fidelity film. Midthunder co-stars alongside Taylor Gray, whose credits include Star Wars Rebels and American Princess. The Wheel centers on Albee and Walker, a couple on the verge of divorce. Married at 16, they’re now 24 and miserable. Albee wants out, while Walker wants to make it work – no matter the damage. This is their Hail Mary; a weekend in the mountains to work through a book that might save their relationship via total, brutal honesty. Nelson Lee (Mulan), Bethany Anne Lind (Ozark), and Kevin Pasdon (New Amsterdam) round out the cast.

Exclusive: Tyler Posey (MTV’s Teen Wolf) has signed on to star opposite Lelia Symington (Street Survivors: The True Story of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash) in Brut Force, the first feature from writer-director Eve Symington.
Slated to go before cameras this fall in California, the film follows Sloane (Lelia Symington), a reporter who returns to her rural California hometown to investigate harassment of local vineyard workers, uncorking a tangled web of crime, corruption and murder behind wine country’s shiny façade.
Posey, who was recently seen in the Blumhouse thriller Truth or Dare, will play the love interest and “homme fatale.” Vico Escorcia (History’s Texas Rising) will also co-star as the missing girl and catalyst to the neo-noir tale.
The production has used the multi-union white paper “The Safe Way Forward” to create a risk assessment and production prevention plan, which will continue to be a collaborative work-in-progress,...
