This isn’t the Good Times of your childhood.
Yvette Nicole Brown, who voices the character of Beverly Evans in the new animated version of Good Times for Netflix, promises it will be an “edgier, more irreverent” reboot of Norman Lear‘s groundbreaking TV sitcom.
After one of Brown’s followers wrote on X Wednesday that “I’m surprised you attached yourself to this project. Looks nothing like the show we grew up on,” Brown responded with a promise that the reboot will offer as much, if not more, than the original.
“This show is edgier and more irreverent than the Good Times of our childhood but it’s still a show about family, fighting the system and working to make things better despite where you start out in the world,” Brown wrote. “That 100% lines up with my values.”

Peacock has given straight-to-series order to Mr. Throwback, a mockumentary comedy headlined by NBA star Steph Curry and Happy Endings alum Adam Pally. The pickup for the project, from Happy Endings creator David Caspe and writing duo Matthew Libman and Daniel Libman, was announced Wednesday at TCA along with three drama series orders by Peacock.

Additionally, NBC in the past year or so has taken a turn toward multi-camera comedies, which cost less to produce than single-camera shows. All of the network’s existing three half-hour series, Night Court, Lopez vs. Lopez and Extended Family,...

When it opened in 1995 in Times Square, the All Star Café was supposed to be the sports world’s answer to Planet Hollywood. Not only was it developed by the same restaurant chain, but it borrowed from its playbook, attracting legends such as Joe Montana, Shaquille O’Neal, Ken Griffey Jr. and Andre Agassi to serve as ambassadors to the brand. But what began as a red carpet extravaganza slowly deteriorated, a victim of changing tastes and rocky finances.
Now, Sports Illustrated Studios and 101 Studios, the company behind “Yellowstone,” are partnering with Stephen Curry, the nine-time NBA All-Star, four-time NBA champion and two-time NBA Mvp — and his Unanimous Media multimedia company — to produce a feature film and documentary about the All Star Café’s rise and fall. Sports Illustrated Studios & 101 Studios has partnered with future Hall of Famer Stephen Curry and his Unanimous Media to produce a narrative film and a documentary about the All Star Café. The projects will be based on Jon Wertheim’s 2020 Sports Illustrated article.
The All Star Café opened in New York City on December 18, 1995, with much fanfare as the themed eatery set up to be for sports what the Hard Rock Cafe is for music. It opened with a flurry of paparazzi, red carpet and a slew of A-list celebrities and athletes, but the final buzzer sounded on September 23, 2007, when it shuttered under the cloud of bankruptcy. That final chapter included the largest sports memorabilia heist in history cooked up by a group of knuckleheaded kitchen staffers, in what has been hailed as a Coen Brothers Fargo-esque criminal event.

On Monday night, NBA star Stephen Curry found himself facing a different kind of full-court press — in the form of a mass of reporters lined up on the red carpet at Sundance Film Festival for the world premiere of the new documentary “Underrated,” which chronicles his life and career.
In a lucky bit of scheduling, Curry had the night off from NBA play — it’s mid-season for the reigning NBA Finals Mvp and his team, the Golden State Warriors — so he flew into Park City, Utah to join the filmmakers behind the doc, including director Peter Nicks and producers Ryan Coogler, Erick Peyton and Sean Havey, at its premiere.
The highly anticipated documentary played for a packed house at the Eccles and, before the screening, Curry recalled the first time he watched the finished film, pressing play on a screener in the wee hours of the morning following a game.

Is Steph Curry headed to Wakanda? Possibly!
The NBA icon fielded a two-part question on Monday night in Park City during the audience portion of the post-screening Q&a of his Sundance Film Festival title Stephen Curry: Underrated.
Part one: How has your faith inspired you to get to where you are today? Part two, directed at Curry and producer Ryan Coogler who joined him at center stage: Are you going to be cast in Black Panther 3? After Kolby Mac from Minorities Report got both questions out, Curry nearly doubled over with laughter.
“You tell him if we can see if we can shoot it in the summer and find a nice role for me in that universe — absolutely,” Curry said to lots of laughter from the capacity crowd inside Eccles Theatre. “You put the pressure on, and we’ll see what he says.”

The first fully in-person Sundance Film Festival since 2020 is around the bend, with the Utah-based event running January 19-29. While the festival revealed more than 100 feature-length films in December, Sundance has announced five more world premiere features, plus four throwback screenings from past festivals.

Perhaps the buzziest addition is “Flora and Son,” the new musical from Dublin director John Carney. The 2023 Sundance Film Festival has added more films to this year’s lineup.
Irish writer-director-producer John Carney, whose Oscar-winning film “Once” premiered in Park City in 2007, followed by “Sing Street” in 2016, will return this month for the world premiere of “Flora and Son,” starring Eve Hewson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Carney’s latest film to explore the power of song, “Flora and Son” is the story of a single mother who “rescues a beat-up guitar from a dumpster and finds that one person’s trash can be a family’s salvation,” according to the Sundance synopsis. Anthony Bregman, Peter Cron, Rebecca O’Flanagan, Robert Walpole are producers.
Another filmmaker familiar with the festival is Peter Nicks, who will premiere his latest documentary, “Stephen Curry: Underrated.” Nicks, who debuted “Homeroom” at Sundance in 2021, produced his new film alongside Ryan Coogler and Erick Peyton. As the title indicates, the doc is a look at four-time NBA champion Stephen Curry.

E! is getting into the original TV movie business.
The NBCUniversal cabler has announced plans to begin programming original romantic comedy films beginning in 2023. The network has commissioned six films to start, though further details about the films were not readily available.
The move into made-for-tv movies at the network comes amid shifting tides in the world of cable and linear television channels. NBCUniversal and other legacy media companies are shifting considerable resources to their streaming efforts, leaving observers wondering what the future of traditional networks like E! will be. Hallmark and Lifetime have both found considerable success with their own slates of original films over the years. Paramount Network was also set to become the home of weekly original films, though Paramount eventually abandoned those plans.
E! is continuing to build out its unscripted offerings as well with the addition of several new shows. Those include “Celebrity Beef” hosted...

Stephen Curry’s Unanimous Media is coming on board a harrowing new documentary from director Brian Tetsuro Ivie, titled “Cancer Alley.”
Grappling with themes of racial and environmental justice, the film tells the story of a small working-class community living in the shadow of an estimated 150 petrochemical facilities in Southern Louisiana. The area, known to locals as “cancer alley,” contains seven of the 10 most carcinogen-ridden census tracts in America and has been called a “modern-day plantation” by activists. The nickname “cancer alley” has also been disputed by some corporate leaders as a misnomer, citing below-average cancer rates in many districts. The feature will explore this controversy in depth.
“I heard about the story through a friend and then literally jumped on a plane because I had to see it for myself,” director Ivie said. “I had never seen so much death and so much life together in the same place.

NBA star Stephen Curry and his Unanimous Media production label have signed a sweeping, first-of-its-kind talent deal with Comcast NBCUniversal.
The multi-year template agreement is billed as the media giant’s first-ever “global talent partnership.” It counts a dizzying amount of first-look development opportunities across the company, including: Universal Studio Group for scripted and unscripted TV projects; DreamWorks Animation for kids and family content; creative and on-camera contributions at NBC Sports; opportunities at NBC News Studios, MSNBC and CNBC; Universal Parks and Resorts; and Comcast’s Xfinity brand.
Insiders valued the deal in the high eight-figure range with a potential upside from producing fees on greenlit content. The agreement was brokered by Jimmy Horowitz, vice chairman of NBCUniversal business affairs and operations. WME represented Curry and Unanimous.
It’s an impressive, if not urgent, move from Comcast NBCU, led by Brian Roberts and Jeff Shell, to secure talent with mass...
