The Silencing Movie Review: A Gripping Resurgence & Unraveling Mysteries In The Heart Of Echo Falls!
The Silencing Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Annabelle Wallis, Zahn McClarnon, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Zahn McClarnon, Melanie Scrofano
Director: Robin Pront
Producer: Cybill Lui Eppich
Writer: Micah Ranum
The Silencing Movie Review Out! (Picture Credit: IMDb)
What’s Good: Pront skillfully blends familiar tropes into a satisfying mystery horror-thriller. The film captures the wilderness through Manuel Dacosse’s cinematography, enhanced by Brooke and Will Blair’s ominous score. Coster-Waldau’s portrayal adds depth, creating a foreboding atmosphere.
What’s Bad: While the film touches on social issues, particularly in northern Minnesota, it may come off as somewhat tokenistic. Despite this, the compelling tone and eerie presence of a masked figure in mist-shrouded forests contribute to the film’s overall appeal.
Loo Break: A suitable “Loo break” in the middle of this intense narrative could be after Rayburn rescues Molly from the sanctuary and keeps her safe overnight in an unused spike trap.

More than two years have passed since it was announced that MGM, Bron, and Hidden Empire Film Group were teaming with director Deon Taylor to conjure up a reboot of the 1972 blaxploitation classic Blacula (watch it Here). Last night (and one year late), a 50th anniversary screening of Blacula was held at the Fine Arts Theater in Beverly Hills – and while promoting that event, Variety happened to include a long-awaited update on the Blacula reboot, saying the new film is slated for a Halloween 2024 release.
The new Blacula has been described as a “modern reimagining” of the original film, but Variety has also made it sound like it’s going to be a follow-up to Blacula and its sequel Scream Blacula Scream (watch that one Here). According to Variety, “the reboot picks up where the original saga left off, after the 1973 sequel Scream Blacula Scream, and will be set in...

The African American Film Critics Association (Aafca) has teamed with independent film producers Roxanne and Deon Taylor to host a special Halloween screening of “Blacula,” commemorating the 1970s Blaxploitation classic’s 50th anniversary.
The screening will be held on Oct. 24 at the Fine Arts Theater in Beverly Hills, with the vampire classic shown in its original 35mm format.
The special event also comes ahead of the Taylors’ upcoming “Blacula” reboot, which is slated for release next Halloween. In 2021, Variety exclusively revealed that that film was in the works with Deon Taylor directing from a script he co-wrote with Micah Ranum. Roxanne Avent Taylor produced the new movie on behalf of Hidden Empire Film Group.
“We are creating an evening that transcends time as we bring together prestigious filmmakers and trailblazers to pay homage to this iconic classic,” said Deon Taylor. “‘Blacula’ was a celebration of storytelling that influenced Blaxploitation filmmaking.

“Blacula” is leaving the coffin.
MGM, Bron and Hidden Empire Film Group’s Deon and Roxanne Avent Taylor are teaming up for a reboot of the blaxploitation horror classic.
The new film is a modern reimagining of the 1972 movie, directed by William Crain and starring William Marshall as Blacula. The reboot picks up where the original saga left off, after the 1973 sequel “Scream Blacula Scream,” and will be set in a metropolitan city post-coronavirus pandemic.
A description of “Blacula” teases how the movie will update the classic story, as it follows the vampire as he “thirsts for vengeance”:
Blacula is an ancient African prince who is cursed by Dracula after he fails to agree to end the slave trade. Blacula is entombed and awakens 200 years later ready to avenge the death of his ancestors and of those responsible for robbing his people of their work, culture and heritage as they appropriated it for profit.

The Quiet Canadian: Pront Returns to the Woods with Canadian Thriller
Belgian director Robin Pront reveals his fixation with rural neo-noir in sophomore film and English language debut The Silencing. With both title and extravagantly macabre but finicky murders reminiscent of past gloriously grisly whodunits such as The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Pront’s footing on Canadian soil feels less self-assured than his moody 2015 debut The Ardennes (read review). A pair of fine performances from its lead actors makes the over churned narrative a bit more palatable, but the script from first time scribe Micah Ranum feels as overstuffed as it is derivative, focusing on loose strands and red herrings when stronger character development could have allowed for a greater sense of empathy and anxiety for the damaged denizens of a rural Canadian hinterland.…...

The hunter (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) becomes the hunted when a crafty killer brings haunted memories—and new possibilities in an old kidnapping case—to the surface in The Silencing. With the thriller out now theatrically and on VOD and Digital via Saban Films, we caught up with director Robin Pront in our latest Q&a feature to discuss his movie's character-centric story, working with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in the pivotal fight scene, and making the killer's ghillie suit as scary as possible through filmmaking techniques.
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Robin, and congratulations on The Silencing! When did you first read Micah Ranum’s screenplay for this film, and what made you want to bring it to life on screen?
Robin Pront: Must've been somewhere in the fall of 2018, I immediately felt a deep connection to the story itself, but more importantly the journey of the protagonist spoke to me.

A serial killer is hunting teen girls in the deep Minnesota woods. Sound familiar? It falls to Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister on Game of Thrones) to bring down the culprit. To be fair, the Danish actor goes the extra mile in The Silencing (on VOD starting August 14th), which is more than you can say for the pedestrian work of director Robin Pront and screenwriter Micah Ranum. Coster-Waldau’s character, an alcoholic hunter named Rayburn Swanson, has been trying to track the whereabouts of his daughter, Gwen, who went missing...

The SXSW festival has announced its program for the Midnighters, Festival Favorites, Shorts, Special Events, Episodic Pilot Competition, and late addition Features for its 2020 film festival.
This year’s program has 135 feature films, including 99 world premieres, 9 North American premieres, 5 U.S. premieres, and 75 films from first-time filmmakers. The SXSW Midnighters section is a favorite for festival attendees who like the weird, electric and terrifying selections. It includes dark comedies, thrillers and slasher horror.
“Programming the Midnighters section this year felt especially invigorating,” Jarod Neece, SXSW Senior Film Programmer, said. “The filmmaking teams, while particularly diverse, all seem to be using their films as a cathartic lens to view the modern-day world. One trend we noticed was the presence of a strong female protagonist fighting off everything from hordes of zombies, bad dates, creepy rideshare drivers and supernatural forces. As always, genre filmmaking can be found throughout the SXSW program, and...

Nathan Bezner, 18 min
Nathan Bezner has a lens and that lens has one function: obliterate the edges of every scene in saturated florescent light (see Antibody for comparison). The main problem I have with this is that while it allows the film as a whole to be more hyper-real than real, it also sucks the real out of things you want to look real (like feces on a toilet [watch the film and you’ll see what I mean, it’s not like that’s a specific interest of mine or anything]). Story: Prosaic janitor narrates his way through the doldrums of life including his relationship to the holiest of thrones.
Burying The Ex
Alan Trezza, 15 min
Part boy-meets-girl with a dash of zombie and a whole heaping of American Pie. Burying the Ex is a funny short dealing with the irrational pining of a young man over his long-ex, though recently dead, girlfriend. His roommate is the mac player extraordinaire who sets him up on a blind date with a young fowl-mouthed vixen.
