Unless you're a fan of the trilogy of novels on which they're based, or happen to have a weird thing for any of the seemingly dozens of young thespians cast in the film, you might not have been paying too much attention to news about next spring's "The Hunger Games." But that may very well change when you hear who's directing the film's second unit: Steven Soderbergh.
The news first broke over Twitter, and was pieced together yesterday by The Playlist. A couple different people involved with the film, including production designer Eddie Mills and electrician Chrys Blackstone spoke out about the director's involvement, saying "Soderbergh in the house this weekend!!! Very exciting!" and "Holy sh*t! Just found out that Steven Soderbergh is coming to the #hungergames to direct 2nd Unit. I am so excited this is getting good!" Both tweets, however, have since been deleted.

Well, here's a move we never thought we'd see from Steven Soderbergh. He's directing second unit on 'The Hunger Games.'
Young adult fantasy novels and the director of 'Traffic' and the upcoming 'Contagion' don't seem like an obvious mix, but turns out Soderbergh is good friends with 'Hunger Games' director Gary Ross.
The Oscar winner's presence wasn't a secret for long: "Soderbergh in the house this weekend!!! very exciting!" tweeted production designer Eddie Mills, while set electrician Chrys Blackstone posted, "Holy sh*t! Just found out that Steven Soderbergh is coming to the #hungergames to direct 2nd Unit. I am so excited, this is getting good!"
IndieWire's The Playlist confirmed that it's all true: Soderbergh produced Ross's 'Pleasantville,' and Ross often takes a look at Soderbergh's scripts.

Moviemaker Steven Soderbergh has signed on as the second unit director on pal Gary Ross' movie adaptation of bestseller The Hunger Games.
The Traffic director has agreed to help his friend as he completes production on the much-anticipated 2012 blockbuster.
Eddie Mills, a production designer on the film, broke the news via a tweet on Wednesday, posting, "Soderbergh in the house this weekend!!! very exciting!"
That message was apparently followed by a tweet from set electrician Chrys Blackstone, which read, "Holy s**t! Just found out that Steven Soderbergh is coming to the #hungergames to direct 2nd Unit. I am so excited this is getting good!" But that tweet has since been taken down and replaced with the post, "Just gained a whole bunch of new real followers... Must be something im tweeting."...

Steven Soderbergh is directing the second unit of The Hunger Games, The Playlist reports. Recently the Contagion director has been seen on the set of the feature adaptation of the young adult novel by Gary Ross. Production designer, Eddie Mils tweeted, “Soderbergh in the house this weekend!!! very exciting!” Another tweet came from electrician Chrys Blackstone, who posted, “Holy shit! Just found out that Steven Soderbergh is coming to the #hungergames to direct 2nd Unit. I am so excited this is getting good!”
This may sound odd to some, but apparently Ross and Soderbergh have been friends for years. Soderbergh produced Pleasantville, while Ross has often taken a look at Soderbergh’s scripts. Phil Messina, a production designer on Hunger Games who has also worked on Soderbergh’s Erin Brockovich, Traffic, Solaris, The Good German, Che: Part Two and the ‘Ocean’s’ trilogy. Playlist reports that Ross merely had to assk Soderbergh to come aboard.

For all his talk of retiring, Steven Soderbergh's list of upcoming projects doesn't seem to be shrinking. He's still got Magic Mike, Liberace and The Man From Uncle to contend with, and the peculiar news this morning is that Soderbergh has reportedly taken on second unit directing duties for Gary Ross' The Hunger Games. As is often the way, the cat screeched from the bag via Twitter, with production designer Eddie Mills cheering "Soderbergh's in the house this weekend!!!", and electrician Chrys Blackstone confirming same, with an added "Holy shit, this is getting good!" Both tweets have now disappeared, suggesting some slapped wrists...It doesn't seem that there's anything sinister afoot though, with The Playlist pointing out a long-standing professional friendship between Ross and Soderbergh, and suggesting that with the film's extremely tight shooting schedule, Ross likely called in a favour, knowing that Soderbergh is adept at working ridiculously fast.

Here's something I didn't know: apparently directors Steven Soderbergh and Gary Ross are good friends. Looking through their respective IMDb pages, you can see that Ross got a "Thank You" credit on Che: Part One and Ocean's 12, while Soderbergh served as a producer on Pleasantville. Now, with Ross rushing to complete production on one of the biggest films of next year, The Hunger Games, it seems that he's called in a favor. The Playlist has discovered a pair of Tweets that suggest that Steven Soderbergh is handling the second unit production for The Hunger Games. Just yesterday, production designer Eddie Mills Tweeted, "Soderbergh in the house this weekend!!! very exciting!" This was followed by a message from Chrys Blackstone, an electrician on the set, who apparently said, "Holy shit! Just found out that Steven Soderbergh is coming to the #hungergames to direct 2nd Unit. I am so excited this...

The question of retirement lingers around Steven Soderbergh, who says he will retire [1] after making a few more films, even if he might not do so in quite the short order once detailed [2] by Matt Damon. This fall he'll shoot Magic Mike, the film informed [3] by Channing Tatum's early days as a male stripper, and will eventually make a Liberace biopic as well as a couple other possible films. Prior to that, the prolific director has two films scheduled for the next six months, Contagion and Haywire. And, as it turns out, he'll also have his name on a big franchise film. Thanks to Twitter, we now know that Soderbergh is directing second unit on the Gary Ross adaptation of The Hunger Games. The Playlist [4] points to crew tweets announcing Soderbergh's involvement, and verified that they are correct. (The tweets include, "Holy shit! Just found out that Steven Soderbergh...

Thanks to The Playlist we learn Steven Soderbergh, fresh off denying his reported retirement, is back at work directing the second unit on Lionsgate's The Hunger Games alongside helmer Gary Ross.
The Playlist notes a pair of Twitter messages revealing the information beginning with production designer Eddie Mills tweeting "Soderbergh in the house this weekend!!! very exciting!" followed by the more revealing bit of information from the film's electrician, Chrys Blackstone, writing, "Holy sh*t! Just found out that Steven Soderbergh is coming to the #hungergames to direct 2nd Unit. I am so excited this is getting good!"
Of course, this isn't "blow the doors off" news though it is a nice bit of information, similar to that of Andy Serkis performing second unit duties on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again alongside Peter Jackson. Typically, however, it isn't a big name director stepping into second unit duties,...
