Almost every mangaka tends to create a specific quality in their protagonists that draws parallels between the main character and the mangaka. However, this was not the case with Kentaro Miura and his masterpiece, Berserk. Miura, once in an interview, revealed that the character that replicated him the most was Pippin.
Guts in Berserk manga | Studio Gaga
Pippin was one of the members of the Band of Falcons who helped Guts escape. He did not speak much, but whenever he did, it would either be a serious discussion or to offer some advice. Pippin had a good relationship with Guts in the series, and the two were called the power duo of Berserk.
According to Miura, when he planned Berserk, he initially thought of only five characters for the series and all of them were based on his friends. However, there were no Guts, Griffith, or Casca in his friend circle,...

‘Lord Of The Rings’ Cast Remembers Bernard Hill: “Don’t Think Anyone Spoke Tolkien’s Words As Great”
Lord of the Rings cast members Elijah Wood, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan and Sean Astin, who played four Hobbits in the trilogy, are remembering Bernard Hill, who died suddenly Sunday morning at the age of 79.
Hill, who starred as King Théoden in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, was scheduled to appear at Liverpool Comic Con over the weekend, but pulled out of the event Friday.
“We love him. He was intrepid, he was funny, he was gruff, he was irascible, he was beautiful,” said Astin, who portrays Samwise Gamgee, onstage at the London event.
Billy Boyd, who plays Pippin, added: “We were watching the movies and I said to Dom, I don’t think anyone spoke Tolkien’s words as great as Bernard did.
“He would break my heart. He will be solely missed.”

5 Unsung Heroes of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy - Main Image
The Lord of the Rings trilogy tells the epic quest of Frodo to destroy the One Ring in Mordor and save Middle-earth from the threat of the Dark Lord Sauron. Though he’s the only one capable of bearing the Ruling Ring without succumbing to its dominance, he doesn’t do it alone.
Sure, the story focuses on Frodo and the other main characters, but several others have come to his aid to ensure victory.
From the more minor roles whose achievements are often overlooked to the warriors who have made great sacrifices to face Sauron’s armies, here are the top five unsung heroes of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

We all know who achieved the goal of the Fellowship of the Ring, nevertheless, it’s curious to imagine who could also destroy the most powerful thing in Middle-earth.
9. Boromir
All fans can agree that the prince of Gondor was the weakest one in the Fellowship, doubting its mission from the very beginning at the Council of Elrond, so that he’d be easily overtaken by the Ring’s power and wouldn’t complete the serious mission.
7-8. Merry & Pippin
The two hobbits are similar in this respect, as they both hadn’t got a clue for what they signed up for, having literally no fighting and traveling experience, and being childishly naive and not so serious as other fellow hobbits.
6. Legolas
Calm and experienced elf could be a great contender to carry the Ring, but it’s known that his race is not so immune to the Ring’s lure.

Waiting for The Rings of Power season 2 feels a lot like Gandalf and Pippin looking out from Minas Tirith at the approaching fires of Mordor, a deep breath before the plunge. The Rings of Power season 2 wrapped filming last year and is reportedly slated to hit our screens in 2024, but Amazon has yet to announce a proper release date or tease anything from the new season beside vague hints from cast members last summer (like our interview with Morfydd Clark about what’s next for Galadriel). It’s been a long wait, with the last episode of the series airing in 2022.
But fans shouldn’t take the silence surrounding the second season as a sign that Amazon has cooled on its big-budget Lord of the Rings series. In fact, according to reports, the studio and showrunners Patrick McKay and Jd Payne are already whipping up a third season of the show.

Since their inception, the directing categories at the Tony Awards have mostly been a boys’ club. Not only are the vast majority of winners men, but so are most of the nominees. But the 2024 ceremony could upend these statistics as more women are helming Broadway shows than ever before. This could finally be the year where they make up the majority of directing nominees.
This season there are 13 women directors on Broadway. Four of them will contend for Best Director of a Play: Lila Neugebauer (“Appropriate” and “Uncle Vanya”), Anne Kauffman (“Mary Jane”), Tina Landau (“Mother Play”), and Whitney White (“Jaja’s African Hair Braiding”). Another nine women will vie for Best Director of a Musical: Sammi Canold (“How to Dance in Ohio”), Rachel Chavkin (“Lempicka”), Rebecca Frecknall (“Cabaret”), Maria Friedman (“Merrily We Roll Along“), Mari Madrid, Leigh Silverman (“Suffs”), Jessica Stone (“Water for Elephants”), Danya Taymor (“The Outsiders”), and...

Lord of the Rings is one of the most iconic and culturally significant fantasy series of all time. Having one of the most dedicated fans, a story like no other, and a world-building that is deeply immersive for the audience, it is no wonder the film series is so loved. The three films were released back to back between 2001 and 2003, having some of the most visually stunning sequences at the time.

The Lord of the Rings franchise has enchanted audiences worldwide with its masterful storytelling and breathtaking visuals across three epic adventure films. At the heart of this fantastical journey lies Aragorn, portrayed by the talented Viggo Mortensen, embodying the noble lineage and resolute spirit of the ancient king of Gondor.
Recently, two beloved actors Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd, who portrayed the lovable hobbits Merry and Pippin respectively, have stirred up quite a buzz with their whimsical desire.
Viggo Mortensen as Aragon
They desired to be laid to rest alongside the fictional king they so adored, Aragorn. However, Mortensen did not find himself enticed by the prospect of becoming a real-life burial companion to his former co-stars.
As a result, Monaghan and Boyd’s fanciful notion sparked excitement among fans.

Let's get something clear, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" has the perfect number of endings, and they are what makes this such an incredible and inimitable trilogy.
There are about 27 minutes of film between the moment the ring goes back into the fiery chasm from whence it came. This includes Frodo and Sam being rescued by eagles. A reunion with the fellowship. The coronation of Aragorn. The return to The Shire. And finally, Frodo sailing off into the West with the elves.
A lesser movie would just end with the reunion and tell all the rest via text on the screen. A slightly better movie would choose to end with The Coronation, as everyone in Minas Tirith kneels before the hobbits, the real heroes. After all, that is the end of the story. The evil has been defeated, and the titular king has returned. But...

Are Thomas and Juliet better together or apart?
That relationship quandary was at the heart of Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 17, and it made for a couple of entertaining cases, one comedic, one dramatic.
Higgins had no one but herself to blame for what was to transpire.
On yet another day beginning at La Mariana, Rick and T.C. were fawning like schoolgirls over their rekindled romances with Suzy and Mahina, respectively.
This set Juliet to pondering: Did she and Thomas spend too much time together?
This is a question with which couples who work and live together must navigate, so it's relevant to many viewers.
Magnum correctly saw Higgins' query as a trap. Fortunately, circumstances quickly gave him an out, as the work partners had two cases with which to deal.
Juliet should have been careful what she wished for, as she ended up with Jin.

The acting ensemble in Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy is nothing short of spectacular. Younger actors including Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom became stars while the cast was peppered with veteran thespians, too, including Sir Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee, and John Rhys-Davies.
British actors such as Sean Bean and Andy Serkis, American stars like Sean Astin and Viggo Mortensen, and Australian performers including Cate Blanchett and David Wenham all melded together to breathe life into Middle Earth. The shocking thing, however, is that only one actor landed an Oscar nomination for their work in the esteemed trilogy. That was McKellen, who was nominated in 2002 for playing Gandalf the Grey in the first movie, “The Fellowship of the Ring.” But so many more actors could and should have been nominated for their work in Jackson’s film series. Here are just five such cases.

For a minute, I wasn’t sure if the latest episode of Dancing with the Stars was a tribute to Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 or a celebration of Disney’s 100th. Looks it was a whole lot of both! Ah, the magic of product placement.

The One Ring to Rule Them All is in my house right now. To be clear, I do not live in Mordor. My home is in Los Angeles, which sometimes feels hot enough to be Mordor. I was not given custody of this ring by a visiting wizard, nor I did find it in the Gladden River. I ran my butt off to get it. I ran 1,815 miles to be exact, over the course of a little more than a year. I ran this challenge through daily training for four marathons, through way more rain and flooding than L.A. usually gets, planning a wedding, and trying to keep myself sane through world events.
My metaphorical journey from the Shire to Mordor was a rough one, but like the events of "The Hobbit," which took place before Frodo and Sam's journey to save the world, it started before I set...

Aaron Tveit has been a fixture on New York stages, appearing in shows including “Wicked,” “Next to Normal” and “Catch Me if You Can,” and he recently wrapped a second run as Christian in “Moulin Rouge!,” which bowed before the pandemic arrived and returned after Broadway reopened. But it’s television that has been helping him most rapidly expand his repertoire.
Tveit takes on a cavalcade of roles in Apple TV+’s “Schmigadoon!,” a parodical love letter to musicals, created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio and starring Keegan Michael-Key and Cecily Strong as a couple working out the kinks in their relationship in a magical land populated by characters from the stage. The series, which focused on musicals of the ’40s and ’50s in its first season, sends up shows of
the ’60s and ’70s in its second, set in the magical land of “Schmicago.”

What if Sally Bowles was in Hair? What if Sweeney Todd got with Miss Hannigan?
These are the scenarios on Schmigadoon! Season 2 Episode 4.
Written by Raina Morris and directed by Alice Matthias, it's the darkest of anything we've seen in the Schmigaverse.
It gets heavy and melancholy but also gives us some truly tender and real moments. Life (and times) is hard, after all -- it's not all just song and dance. Even musicals aren't all happy anymore.
The scene between Melissa and Jenny was quite moving. It was just a traumatized girl with a friend trying to help her. There were no laughs, just a reminder of how broken and unhappy these characters are.
We haven't given costume designer Angus Strathie as much acknowledgment as he deserves.
Across the board, his costumes have been outstanding, but this episode had some fantastic pieces, namely Melissa's tangerine dream and Miss Codwell's yellow floral frock.

“I didn’t want to go back to Schmigadoon, as much as I love Schmigadoon,” the show’s co-creator, writer said at Deadline’s Contenders Television awards-season event. “The idea was always that if we got another season, I wanted to go into the ’60s and ’70s musicals. As much as I love Rodgers and Hammerstein, these are the musicals I’m passionate about — Sweeney and Pippin and Chicago. It’s just a great contrast to the first season, right? Where it’s darker, it’s sexier, it’s grittier, it’s scarier in every way.”

"Schmigadoon," Apple TV+'s musical series that parodies iconic stage productions of the past, is back for season two - but don't expect the Golden Age musical numbers from season one. Season two - which the show renames "Schmicago" - turns its attention to the darker and sexier musicals of the 1960s and 1970s. Those productions - like the reference for the new title, "Chicago" - feature sex, murder, trauma, and war, and often don't end happily. In the series, Melissa (Cecily Strong) warns Josh (Keegan-Michael Key) that she's not as familiar with the shows of this era, so if that's you, too, we've got you covered. These are the biggest musical references for "Schmigadoon" season 2, aka "Schmicago."

It was the battle of the Stephens at the 27th annual Tony Awards telecast March 25, 1973 on ABC from the Imperial Theatre. In one corner was Stephen Sondheim’s glorious and exquisite romantic musical “A Little Night Music” based on Ingmar Bergman’s 1955 comedy “Smiles of a Summer Night.” And in the other corner, 25-year-old Stephen Schwartz’s hip, cool, Fosse Fosse Fosse musical “Pippin.”
“A Little Night Music,” which featured song memorable tunes as “Send in the Clowns” and “A Weekend in the Country,” waltzed into the ceremony hosted by Rex Harrison and Celeste Holm and co-hosted by Sandy Duncan and Jerry Orbach with 12 nominations including best musical, best original score, best book for Hugh Wheeler, best direction of a musical for Harold Prince, best performance by a leading actress in a musical for Glynis Johns, leading actor in a musical for Len Cariou, featured actress in a musical for...

Are you ready to meet the dastardly denizens of Schmicago?
Schmigadoon! Season 2 takes us to a dark, seedy city inspired by the musicals of the 1960s and 70s.
Dove Cameron is already an icon in her own right, famous for her role in Disney's Descendents, Liv and Maddie, and a thriving pop music career.
In Schmigadoon! Season 1, she played the simple farmer's daughter Betsy. For Season 2, she is Jenny Banks, a role chiefly inspired by Kander and Ebb's anti-heroine Sally Bowles (made famous by Liza Minnelli in 1972's Cabaret).
Aaron Tveit is the Tony-winning star of Broadway's Moulin Rouge! and the big-screen movie adaptation of the mega-musical Les Misérables.
After playing Danny Bailey in Season 1, he's back as a rockin' leading man who is equal parts Jesus, Pippin, and Berger from Hair.
We caught up with Cameron and Tveit at a recent press junket to talk about their experiences filming...

Cinco Paul is the man behind the music of Apple TV+'s hit musical comedy Schmigadoon!
Paul co-created the series with longtime screenwriting partner Ken Daurio.
Paul serves as showrunner, songwriter, executive producer, and director of several episodes. He even won an Emmy for Schmigadoon! Season 1's rollicking number, "Corn Puddin'."
We caught up with Paul at a recent press day to talk about what went into the creation of Schmigadoon! Season 2.
How has the fan response impacted how you approached Season 2, or did you already know what you wanted to do?

Polish up that ring you've been keeping secret and safe because Fathom Events and Warner Bros. Music has always played an important role in Tolkien adaptations. J.A. Bayona, producer and director on Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, told Den of Geek last year that he played music on set for the actors to help them get “the right tone” for their characters, and that “there’s an… obvious sense of musicality when you read the books” which is “all about language and the beauty of language.” The show’s season one finale even featured a new musical setting for Tolkien’s “Rhyme of the Rings,” written by Bear McCreary and performed by Fiona Apple, which was generally well-received by fans.
Anyone who has read The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings knows that the books are full of songs. Aragorn sings old Elvish ballads, Bilbo is quite the composer, the Dwarves have songs about their ancient mines, the Rohirrim love melancholic battle epics,...

(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we revisit the last time a crowd-pleasing, action-heavy genre film swept the Academy Awards with "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.")
I'm not breaking any new ground here by pointing out that, traditionally, action movies haven't fared all that well at the Academy Awards. When "Mad Max: Fury Road," arguably the greatest of all time, could handily win most of the technical, below-the-line awards but be denied any of the more "prestigious" honors back in 2016, well, that kind of says it all. The fully-ingrained genre bias within the voting body might finally have started to melt away in recent history, as evidenced by "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and its delightfully strong performance at this year's awards, but certain films managed to...

Exclusive: A new musical based on the award-winning 2012 documentary The Queen of Versailles and the life of beauty queen, socialite and TV personality Jacqueline “Jackie” Siegel is in development, with Kristin Chenoweth attached to star and produce.
The project would reunite Chenoweth with her Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz, who is on board to write the music. An industry reading is set for March 24 in New York City, in preparation for an out of town engagement with additional details to be announced.
Stephen Schwartz (Photo: Nathan Johnson)
Lauren Greenfield’s The Queen of Versailles 2012 documentary depicted the often bizarre lives of Jackie Siegel and David Siegel, owners of Westgate Resorts, as they struggled to build the largest private home in America in Orlando, Florida — a $100 million house inspired by the Palace of Versailles. Their plans – and their lives – were derailed by the Great Recession of 2008.
The stage musical will reunite Schwartz with Broadway superstar Chenoweth (who will play Jackie Siegel), and feature a book by Lindsey Ferrentino and direction by Tony nominee Michael Arden. The project is described as “a new musical exploring the true cost of fame, fortune, and family.”
The Queen of Versailles is produced by Bill Damaschke. Chenoweth will also act as producer through her production banner Diva Worldwide Entertainment.

Lots of celebrities love animals. Some show this love by having multiple pets, rescuing animals, helping shelter pets, or advocating for protecting endangered species. For a period of time, Audrey Hepburn had a baby deer to help make filming the movie Green Mansions more believable.

The film Green Mansions was released in 1959. Audrey Hepburn and Anthony Perkins starred in the movie, and it was directed by Hepburn’s husband at the time, Mel Ferrer.
In the movie, Hepburn plays a character named Rima who lives in a jungle. This role required Hepburn to appear natural when interacting with different wildlife. According to AnOther Magazine, this led to Hepburn having a pet fawn named Pippin for a time.

The massive success of The Rings of Power and the undying popularity of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings film trilogy are proof of the longevity of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium. But while Jackson’s extended editions have been pored over by fans for years, there are those who might have enjoyed the movies but have never read the books. The latter group might be surprised to learn that there are actually quite a few scenes in the films that you’ll never find in the books. Because they never happened on the page at all.
There is always a specific reason as to why changes are made, whether it’s in service of a screen adaptation’s pacing, deeper character development, or the notion that a new narrative twist can improve the experience in theaters. Genre films have often utilized the depiction of vampirism as a powerful metaphor for addiction, as seen in films like The Hunger (1983), The Addiction (19995), and Habit (1997). More recently, My Heart Can’t Beat Unless You Tell It To (2020) used vampirism as a potent allegory not only for addiction, but also for people living with chronic illness and the toll it takes on their caregivers. In his new film Blood, written by Will Honley (Bloodline), director Brad Anderson adeptly blends motherhood, vampirism, and chronic illness, emphasized by the need for blood, to present a compelling story of a family torn apart.
Blood stars Michelle Monaghan as Jess, a caring nurse and mother, who is also a recovering addict going through a nasty divorce and a battle for custody of her children. Jess’ ex-husband, played by Skeet Ulrich, got the house, the babysitter, and a new baby, and is using Jess’ previous struggles...

Vampirism has been treated as a metaphor for more prosaic addictions in movies before. In “Blood,” however, it’s one more hassle a recovering addict doesn’t need added to the burdens of her already discordant family life. Starring Michelle Monaghan as a mother just out of rehab whose young son gets bitten — then develops an insatiable appetite for the titular fluid — Brad Anderson’s film steers a middle course between dysfunctional domestic drama and supernatural horror. That balance doesn’t completely work. But solid performances and some strong, occasionally unpleasant content make this an involving if not entirely satisfying watch. Vertical Entertainment is releasing it to limited U.S. theaters this Friday, then On Demand platforms Jan. 31.

At its core, the first season of "Schmigadoon!" on Apple TV+ is about two people that are trying to navigate the complex topics of love and relationships. But on the surface, as these characters are trapped in a town that won't let the leave until they find true love, the series starring Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key is a love letter to the Golden Age of musicals, which featured stories that often were light, bright, and shiny. However, for the show's second season, this couple is moving from the romance of the 1940s and 1950s to the darker and grittier aura of musical theater from the 1960s and 1970s.

By the late 1970s, there were two major animated adaptations of The Lord of the Rings in development. Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, known for their holiday season specials like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman, had directed an animated dramatization of The Hobbit for television, broadcast in 1977 and they were planning a sequel, also for television, based on The Lord of the Rings. But filmmaker and animator Ralph Bakshi beat them to it in 1978 when he directed an animated feature film, The Lord of the Rings, which he intended to be Part 1 of 2. The studio (United Artists) refused to put Part 1 on the title though, and never greenlit Part 2. Instead, Rankin and Bass released a made-for-television sequel to their Hobbit film under the title The Return of the King, which finished off J.R.R. Tolkien‘s epic story.

Since "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" was the last time Peter Jackson expected to be a part of the Tolkien universe, he needed the perfect song to end his sprawling cinematic journey across the magical Middle-earth. Although /Film called it "the worst Peter Jackson hobbit movie, "Five Armies" is elevated by the moving ballad "The Last Goodbye" in the end credits.
"The Last Goodbye" creates a full-circle moment by having Billy Boyd, who famously played the cheeky hobbit Pippin in the original trilogy, write and sing. This song serves as a callback to one of his most well-known scenes from "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" where he sings "The Edge of Night" for a scowling Denethor. Similar to "The Last Goodbye," it is a quiet piece composed by Boyd where his character reflects on the dangers of war and lost friendships. Boyd...

“When in doubt, Elanor Brandyfoot, always follow your nose,” The Stranger tells the young Harfoot in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’s Season 1 finale.
The line is almost identical to what Gandalf (played by Ian McKellen) tells Pippin in Peter Jackson’s Fellowship of the Ring, leaving many wondering if The Stranger — who was revealed to be an Istari — is the famed Grey Wizard. Adding to speculation is his friendship with Nori and the other Harfoots, which feels reminiscent of Gandalf’s relationships with both Bilbo Baggins and Bilbo’s nephew Frodo.

(Warning: Spoilers follow for the season 1 finale of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.")
The season finale of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" proved that, even in its darkest moments, the series will look to the light for hope. This is especially true when it comes to the Stranger (Daniel Weyman) and the harfoots. Although a chunk of the story is relegated to finding out his true identity, the finale focuses on the friendship between the wizard and the halflings. As the Stranger chooses to be good in a world dictating he is evil, we see his harfoot friends fight at his side to keep it that way. But how do the halflings decide to help their (very) powerful friend? Well, by throwing rocks at the villains, of course.
Not only is the moment in question a great act of bravery by the harfoots,...

This Lord of the Rings review contains spoilers for The Rings of Power.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Episode 8
Now that was more like it! Eight episodes in, The Rings of Power feels like it’s finally kicking into gear. This first season finale was full of dramatic action, answers to nagging questions, and it even killed off a loveable character. And not only did people talk about rings, they actually made some!
The show has finally cleared up the issue of who Halbrand and the Stranger actually are, thank goodness. And we will hold our hands up and say, we admit it, we were wrong! Halbrand is Sauron after all, as half the internet had guessed a few episodes ago. The reveal was nicely done, balancing the growing realization for fans of Tolkien with a dramatic and, more importantly, clear and unambiguous reveal for non-book readers.

One of the biggest differences when you go from watching "The Lord of the Rings" movies to the first "The Hobbit" movie is its abundance of songs. There are sad dwarf songs, happy songs about washing dishes, and even a song by goblins. Though the next two movies all but erased this element, the Prime Video prequel series "The Rings of Power" finally brings back one of the most important elements of Tolkien's writing: music.
"The Rings of Power" has done a lot to capture the nuances and less flashy aspects of Tolkien's writing and mythos, like his fascination with trees and kind of bleak and pessimistic look at the course of history, but few things are as essential to the legendarium, and as misunderstood by the public, as Tolkien's love of songs. After all, Professor Tolkien's creation myth for Middle-earth literally begins with a song.

It's become an all-too-common occurrence for actors of color cast in movie adaptations of fantasy books to receive backlash, and the Black and brown cast members of Amazon's Lord of the Rings prequel, "The Rings of Power," are the most recent victims. Although fantasy-lovers have no problem accepting the existence of J.R.R. Tolkien's many fantasy creatures like hobbits, harfoots, elves, and dwarves, many can't suspend their disbelief enough to accept those fantasy creatures could be people of color, as they are depicted in "The Rings of Power." Now the original cast of the Lord of the Rings trilogy are standing up against the racist backlash and declaring that elves of all colors are welcome in Middle-earth.
When Black cast members such as Lenny Henry and Sophia Nomvete were announced in early 2020, racists got to work trolling on social media about how characters of color supposedly disrespect Tolkien's vision.

In the singular world of Middle-earth, you just never quite know what you'll stumble upon next. Author J.R.R. Tolkien created such an unimaginably huge and fully lived-in universe that readers always had to stay on their toes. At any given moment, fans could anticipate the introduction of fascinating new settings and wild fantasy concepts (and maybe a jarring and divisive character or two) unlike anything else in the genre. Considering the thousands of years of history that Tolkien made up from scratch, the creators behind "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" faced an uphill battle to make all of this digestible to mainstream audiences. That's what makes it all the more remarkable that the last episode neatly (re)introduced a certain object that fans have definitely seen before.

"The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" is caught between a rock and a hard place. On one hand, the new fantasy series comes with the built-in expectations and standards of everything that the brand name implies; after all, it is following in the footsteps of one of the most highly acclaimed and widely praised film trilogies of all time. On the other, its never-before-seen time period in Middle-earth and unique storytelling ambitions -- essentially, an origin story for the powerful rings depicted in the prologue of "The Fellowship of the Ring" and for the Dark Lord who secretly manipulated their creation -- has given the show an opportunity to set itself apart and forge its own identity altogether.
So how could the creative team possibly unite these two seemingly contradictory aims? It's easy, really.

It was a good run, but after many pleasantly uneventful decades it would appear we need to add “Lord of the Rings” to the ever-growing list of toxic fandoms. What sent some “Rings of Power” viewers over the edge? Why, the inclusion of a few nonwhite characters, of course — what else? Just as “Star Wars” had to do earlier this year, the “Rings of Power” folks felt compelled to clarify that “Our world has never been all white, fantasy has never been all white, Middle-earth is not all white” in a message sent across the show’s social channels yesterday. The statement was Amazon’s response to the “relentless racism, threats, harassment, and abuse some of our castmates of color are being subjected to on a daily basis. We refuse to ignore it or tolerate it.”

The cast of new Prime Video series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” can count on knowing that Sam and Frodo have their backs.
As the new show is being hit with racist backlash due to the diversity of the cast, several stars of the original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy are throwing their support behind the actors, including Elijah Wood (Frodo), Sean Astin (Sam), Dominic Monaghan (Merry) and Billy Boyd (Pippin), who took to social media to share their support.
“You Are All Welcome Here,” wrote Wood in the caption of a photo he shared on Twitter, in which he’s accompanied by Monaghan and Boyd.

The stars of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy are showing their support for the Rings of Power cast after the Amazon series came under fire for casting Black actors as elves, dwarves and Hobbits. Ismael Cruz Córdova revealed that he’d been receiving “pure and vicious hate speech” over the past two years after being cast as the Silvan elf Arondir, and Amazon turned off ratings for the show after being review-bombed.
