42, The Power Of Three, Dinosaurs On A Spaceship and more - the Doctor Who work to date of the show's next showrunner...
Who is Chris Chibnall? You might know him as the creator of Born & Bred, Law & Order: UK and Broadchurch amongst others, but as readers of this site, it's more likely that you know his scripts from Doctor Who and his tenure as head writer of Torchwood. On Friday, the BBC announced that Steven Moffat will be stepping down as the showrunner of Who after next year's tenth series (since its revival), to be replaced by Chibnall in 2018.
Over the weekend alone, there has already been a lot written and said in speculation about what the new show-runner, Doctor Who's third since Russell T. Davies combined the roles of head writer and executive producer when he revived the series in 2005. I, for one, welcome our...

Spoilers: our viewing notes and geeky spots for Doctor Who series 9, Face The Raven...
So, ravens have been faced, the Doctor has been betrayed, and the groundwork has been laid for the two-part finale. But there’s no time to mourn; here’s our weekly Doctor Who viewing notes, featuring all the callbacks, references and things we otherwise thought interesting. As ever, this is the collected observations of one tired fan, so feel free to catalogue the things I’ve missed in the comments below...
Face The References
This story reunites the Doctor and Clara with graffiti artist Rigsy, who first appeared in last year’s Flatline and acted as Clara’s assistant while the Doctor was trapped inside a Tardis whose outer dimensions were shrinking. The Doctor was initially unimpressed with Rigsy, dismissing him as another ‘pudding brain’, but quickly saw his worth as a source...

[previous: “The Zygon Invasion”]
warning: spoilers!
I feel like we have finally met Peter Capaldi’s Doctor for the first time. At last.
This was an incredible episode. Okay, the last 15 minutes were incredible. It was a bit of filler getting to that point, but even the filler had some good stuff: Osgood getting to hang out with and help the Doctor, almost like a companion; the sad Zygon so terrified it commits suicide, surprisingly poignant; Jenna Coleman showing off how good an actor she actually is with hard, callous Zygon Bonnie, who looks so very unlike Clara, for all that the Doctor can say that he “knows that face.” All so much better — smarter, more emotional, more cohesive as a story — than almost anything we’ve seen out of Doctor Who in years.
And then we get to this:
A “scale model of war.” A game show with deadly consequences. (And that’s a nice touch,...

Doctor Who, Series 9, Episodes 7 and 8, “The Zygon Invasion” and “The Zygon Inversion”
Written by Peter Harness and Steven Moffat (“The Zygon Inversion”)
Directed by Daniel Nettheim
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on BBC America
Doctor Who’s season of two-parters carries on with the return of the Zgyons, fan-favorite baddies from the classic series who have reared their suction-cupped heads a few times in NuWho. Most memorably, they were at the center of the fantastic 50th anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor”, and it’s fitting that writers Peter Harness and Steven Moffat intrinsically tie this story to that special. While many were undoubtedly excited to see the shape-shifting villains return, more exciting for this Whovian is the return of Osgood, after her irritatingly-handled murder in “Death in Heaven”. Though in “The Day of the Doctor” she is little more than a stand-in for the fandom, Ingrid Oliver made...

Today, the four principal characters all get a good chunk of the action, each showing a side of themselves we're not used to. Osgood is on stellar form as the de facto companion, showing that she can do so much more than blush and puff into her inhaler every time the Doctor is nearby. Meanwhile, Zygon Clara/Bonnie is vampish, cool and more than a little sexy, Kate Stewart is trigger happy and the Doctor -- well, who ever really knows what he's going to do? Read More: Review: 'Doctor Who' Season 9 Episode 7, 'The Zygon Invasion,' Lets Zygons Be Zygons Unpleasant DreamsThe pre-credit teaser is a funny old thing. Done right and it can be the best part of an episode; handled poorly, and you're in a bad mood for the next 50 minutes. This season's "Doctor Who" has nailed it, and Clara's dreamscape in "The Zygon Inversion" is no different.

The Zygons return! Here's our spoiler-filled review of The Zygon Invasion...
This review contains spoilers. Our spoiler-free review is here.
9.7 The Zygon Invasion
“Did you just call yourself Doctor Disco?”
[Review has been updated to correct two factual errors. Apologies!]
It’s a while since a Doctor Who story needed to start with a bit of an exposition dump, but The Zygon Invasion is as dense an opening chapter of an adventure as we’ve seen in some time.
As the prologue demonstrates, this is a story that picks up from crumbs left behind in the wonderful Day Of The Doctor. And then it jumps, still pre-credits, to explain why Ingrid Oliver’s Osgood is still alive.
After all, we saw her brutally slain by Missy at the end of series 8, and yet it’s been known for some time that Oliver would be back. It is, of course, the ecosystem modern television exists in, whereby secrets...

Shape-shifting menace The Zygons are back on Doctor Who - and this time they're launching a full-scale invasion.
'The Zygon Invasion' - airing Saturday night at 8.15pm on BBC One - is written by Peter Harness, who scripted last year's 'Kill the Moon'.
It marks a return to Doctor Who for not only the shape-changing aliens, but also Ingrid Oliver's Osgood - a character who appeared to perish in series 8's finale, 'Death in Heaven'.
Saturday's episode will reveal how the amiable scientist survived her apparent execution. Was the Osgood who met her end a Zygon duplicate?
Jemma Redgrave is also back in 'The Zygon Invasion' as loyal Unit officer Kate Stewart, alongside the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and companion Clara (Jenna Coleman).
The first of a two-part adventure, the episode will be followed next week (November 7) by 'The Zygon Inversion'.

As most of us Whovians and ComicMixers know, BBC America became the All Doctor Who All The Wibbly Wobbly Timey Winey Stuff network this past week in honor of the premiere of Season 9 – which, as I write this, airs tonight, Saturday, September 19. So I pretty much kept my TV tuned to channel 101 (the BBC America station on my cable system), except for some episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Hardball with Chris Matthews – oh, and the first half-hour of the Repugnantican debate on CNN, of which the less I have to say about that sorry affair the better, except that it disgusted me, and I returned to the All Doctor Who All The Wibbly Wobbly Timey Winey Stuff with relief.
So here’s a rundown of my opinions of random episodes in the lives of the Doctor.

Let the speculation continue as to who Maisie Williams will be playing in her two-episode guest stint in Doctor Who.
The Game of Thrones actress's mysterious character details have been largely kept under wraps, although showrunner Steven Moffat has confirmed that she is not a new incarnation of a past Doctor Who character.
In a new interview released by BBC America in the Us, Steven Moffat coyly says that he can reveal "very little" about Williams's guest role at this time.
"There's a load of things about why we cast her and why she's the right choice, and why she's amazing," Moffat teases. "I can only talk about them once you've seen the show."
"She's fantastic," Peter Capaldi adds. "She's such a gifted actress… She's so young. She turned 18 while she was working with us.
"She came in and she did a performance that I thought was so mature, so clever.

BBC America has got our fan juices flowing with six brand new Doctor Who pictures.
First up, there's a couple of new shots of Peter Capaldi's Doctor - sporting his hoodie - and Jenna Coleman's Clara - more conservatively dressed.
Rather more exciting though are the four shots from series nine's opening two episodes, 'The Magician's Apprentice' / 'The Witch's Familiar'.
Along with more dramatic pictures of the Doctor and Clara, we get our first look at Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) in the new series, as well as a resurrected Missy (Michelle Gomez).

Peter Capaldi has revealed that his terse Time Lord is looking to "have a good time" when the series returns.

Digital Spy was invited onto the Doctor Who set back in June, to witness some filming on this year's Zygon two-parter and speak to the man himself, Peter Capaldi.
The interview - conducted alongside assembled press - proved without a shadow of a doubt that Capaldi's passion for the series is still as strong as it ever was.
"Chris [Eccleston] and David [Tennant] and Matt [Smith] were all hugely devoted and committed to the series," he says. "I might just have more knowledge of it. Not more than David - David has more than me!
"But I'm older and loved it from when I was a little kid. So I bring that with me. I know what it's like to be a fan, so I empathise with people who are fans of the show."
Here's nine times Capaldi proved in our chat that he's the ultimate Doctor Who fan, and absolutely the right...

Rule One: The Moffat Lies.
Rule One-a: So Does The McGann.
After nearly a year of what showrunner Steven Moffat described as “lying through my teeth”, the prequel to the Doctor Who anniversary episode “The Day of the Doctor” reveals that the one fact that upset people the most is the one that was the biggest lie.
Watch, and squee with me.
Ok, so technically, Paul McGann isn’t in the Anniversary episode proper, so his year-long claim that he wasn’t asked to take part wasn’t quite a lie, but it’s close enough.
And it was released on his birthday, which is just a case of the universe rolling the right way on occasion.
The Sisterhood of Karn made their first appearance in the Tom Baker adventure The Brain of Morbius. The Sisterhood have had a long history with the Time Lords, as described in numerous prose and audio adventures.
