Last night, at the end of a busy week at work when I was just in the mood to hang out at home and unwind a little, I decided that it was a good time for me to wrap up my viewing of Criterion ’68 by ingesting an assortment of short films that had accumulated, like the last crumbs of cereal at the bottom of the bag, in my chronological checklist of films that I’ve been blogging about over the years. It was a suitable occasion for me to fully immerse myself into what turned out to be a festival of random weirdness. My wife, recovering from a bout with illness, was feeling a bit better but wanted to find a productive use of her time with the resurgence of energy, so she kept herself busy by working on a new quilting project. That left me free to indulge without...

Acknowledging a recent “lack of communication from the top,” Fox News Channel co-presidents Bill Shine and Jack Abernethy addressed Fnc employees gathered this morning for the channel’s 20th anniversary and the unveiling of a new $30 million studio in Manhattan. The set will make its on-air debut on Election Day, November 8. “Today is about looking back at 20 news-packed years and then looking ahead to doing even more journalism,” Shine said. “We understand for the last…...

Fox News Channel celebrated 20 years on the air Friday morning with a gathering at the channel's Manhattan headquarters in a new $30 million, state-of-the-art studio set to be revealed on Election Day. Co-presidents Bill Shine and Jack Abernethy presided over the 10 a.m. gathering during which they obliquely acknowledged the reign of founding chairman Roger Ailes, who was ousted last July amid sexual harassment allegations. "Today is about looking back at 20 news-packed years and then looking ahead to doing even more journalism," said Shine, according to people who attended the meeting. "We

Every week, the CriticWire Survey asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday morning. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: This past weekend saw the release of “Lights Out,” which is based on a horrifying short film. Shorts can have tremendous value, though even the best of them tend to fly under the radar. What is your favorite short film, and why?
Miriam Bale (@mimbale), freelance
I count this Resnais film about plastics, “La chant de la styrene,” and an industrial film by Les Blank about factory farm chickens, “Chicken Real,” among the best films, and certainly best docs, I’ve seen. And the Safdies’ short “John’s Gone” is probably my favorite of their movies, if not their best.

Core Media Group, the company behind American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance, has filed for Chapter 11 protection in Manhattan. Core was part of the joint venture which also combined Shine and Endemol to create Endemol Shine Group. However, Core continued to operate as a separate company with its own capital structure and was never integrated. American Idol concluded its 15th and final season on Fox on April 7. Core is also the parent of 19 Entertainment and Sharp…...

6th Update, Tuesday, 3 Pm: Rentrak Theatrical filed the weekend’s actuals with Warner Bros.’ American Sniper counting a four-week cume through yesterday of $110.4M. Talk about the spoils of war: American Sniper propelled the 2015 box office, in its first 19 days, 3.6% percent over the same frame last year with $667M. It stands to reason that this would be the highest-grossing four-day Mlk weekend of all-time with $248.5M after American Sniper broke a slew of records, read Eastwood’s career-high bow, best three-day opening ever during January and February. Previous Mlk record was 2009 with $231.5M when Sony comedy Paul Blart: Mall Cop zoomed up a four-day bow of $39.2M. American Sniper had the biggest theater average of the four-day weekend with $30,100, followed by Sony Classic’s Still Alice, which chalked up $20,685 PTA or $248K in 12 venues.
The consensus is that American Sniper is going to hold for another two weekends. Wide releases...

It started with an infographic. Then more infographics. And some think pieces. And some brief TwitterRage. Over the last year and a half, women’s role in cinema, specifically Hollywood cinema, has become a lightning rod for discussion and debate, and more so than any time in the past, people are approaching film a little more critically in regards to how women are portrayed. The statistics are mind-numbingly bleak, with women representing a fraction of the work force behind the camera, from director to CEO to the best boy. Women in front of the camera rarely fair much better, with roles such as “beautiful and always understanding girlfriend/wife to the hilarious schlub” and “girl with cleavage that shoots guns in tight clothes”.

Idris Elba isn’t unknown to television; he did star in critically-acclaimed shows “The Wire” and “Luther.” But Elba’s now a certified movie star, playing in films like Marvel’s “Thor” films, “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” and is lending is voice to “Finding Dory.” With his movie credits racking up, the last place people would probably expect to see him would be back on their television screens. But indeed, Elba is coming back to television in a very special way. Variety reports that Elba will star in a four-episode docu-series, currently with the working title “The Idris Elba Project.” The show, a production of Shine North and Elba’s company, Green Door [ Read More ]

The opening-night movie at the Sundance Film Festival is often, almost by design, a mild, light, forgettable affair. A lof of filmmakers don’t want the opening slot, and the basic idea is that the bar can’t be raised too high, because then you’ll risk making all the movies that come afterward look disappointing. But Whiplash, which opened the 30th anniversary edition of Sundance last night, didn’t just raise the bar — it electrified the spirits of everyone who saw it, including me. It stars Miles Teller, who had his breakthrough role in last year’s Sundance favorite...

The longlist for the Best Song category in the Oscars has been announced – so what should make the cut?
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the longlist of songs for its Best Original Song Oscar in 2014, ahead of the nominations for the shortlist on January 14.
The list features 75 songs written for movies over the last year, with artists including Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, U2, Coldplay, Kings Of Leon, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and M83 all making the grade. Pharrell is included for his hit Happy, currently in the top 5 of the UK charts, which appears in Despicable Me 2, and other animated films make up a large proportion of those selected: Epic, Turbo, The Croods, Planes, Escape From Planet Earth and Monsters University all also get a mention.

Making the most of their time in Manhattan, Rita Ora went for a stroll with Topshop heiress Chloe Green on Thursday afternoon (October 17).
The “Shine Ya Light” songstress showed off her rainbow hair while sporting a white t-shirt and denim bib overalls with white sneakers as she hit up a few shops with her gal pal.
Coming in February 2014, Rita will be launching a capsule collection of lip and nail shades with the Rimmel London cosmetics brand.
Ms. Ora told press, "I have always loved Rimmel growing up and it is so exciting for me to be able to work with such a cool brand. I’ve got Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino on my mind these days. It’s a product of the end-of-year hurrahs for Scorsese’s Hugo. The film goes into the Academy Award ceremonies with 11 Oscar nominations – the most of any film this year – including a Best Director nod for Scorsese. Win or lose, Marty’s on a roll having already taken a Golden Globe for his work on the film, and selection as Best Director by the National Board of Review (the Board also named Hugo Best Picture). And that doesn’t include the film’s placing on any number of critic’s Year’s Best lists.
What does all this have to do with Tarantino? It brings to mind a statement the younger filmmaker had made about Scorsese some years ago.
They’ve always been linked, these two. Tarantino had been anointed by more than a few as “the...

Michael Sackler-Berner occasionally lands a gig as an extra on television. Like in 2009, when he played "Band Member #1" on an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent about a bunch of loft-dwelling, homicide-prone bohemians in Brooklyn.
In his few seconds onscreen, it's easy to tell Sackler-Berner's comfortable in the role. That's because in real life he is a Brooklyn-based musician -- minus the murder.
And he's no extra. Last month (Feb. 16), the singer-songwriter celebrated the digital release of two new singles, "Yes I Do" and "Shimmer and Shine," with a packed show at Joe's Pub in Manhattan's East Village. His band featured class acts Liberty DeVitto, Ben Stivers, Kevin Jenkins and David Mansfield, and ran through a stacked set of heart-felt originals. (The singles were officially released on iTunes last week.)
