- Harvard University educated economist who also was a professional opera singer in his younger years.
- He took up singing lessons in his late 30s, as part of an effort to quit his two-and-a-half-pack-a-day smoking habit. After a few years of vocal training, he was a professional basso profundo. He quit his tenured position at Harvard, and became a regular performer at the New York City Opera, and later, the Met.
- During his 14-year opera career, he wrote several books on economics. After retiring from the stage, he wrote books on family demographics.
- In his youth, he sang in church choir and played the clarinet. At Harvard, he sang in the glee club, and received a degree in economics when he was 20. His Harvard studies were interrupted for Army service in postwar-occupation Japan.
- Even after becoming a talented basso, he was too nervous to sing opera at Harvard. He finally sang the role of Count Almaviva in a Harvard production of "The Marriage of Figaro". The opera was directed by John Lithgow and conducted by John Adams, who would later compose many operas.
