Lucca Comics & Games, Europe’s number one comic and gaming convention, kicked off the 2023 season on Thursday with the launch of the poster and festival trailer for this year’s event. The 57th Lucca festival will be held in the picturesque Italian medieval city Nov. 1-5.
This 2023 festival theme, Together, and rainbow color additions to the Lucca logo, emphasizes organizers’ focus on diversity and inclusion for this year’s edition.
The 2023 poster was designed by Israeli artists, and twin brothers, cartoonist Asaf Hanuka and The New Yorker illustrator Tomer Hanuka. The brothers develped the concept art for Air Folman’s 2008 Oscar-nominated animated documentary Waltz With Bashir, and have collaborated on several graphic novels together, including Boaz Lavie’s The Divine.

Zhang Yimou, China’s most enduring filmmaker, is joining the worldwide shift by feature film directors into the streaming arena.

The show is to be directed by Xing Lu and is backed by Tencent Video. It is currently in development, with a tentative air date in 2025. That’s because Zhang has a film directing project with an anticipated Chinese New Year release date, due to begin shooting this summer.

Whether you’re recalling your favorite movie theater experiences or venturing back to cinemas, you might remember the familiar ritual. You look around expectantly at the display of posters for upcoming movies, and you invariably come away disappointed. Not at the quality of films, mind you, but at the poster art itself. Because let’s face it, designing eye-catching movie posters is something of a lost art these days. In fact, rather than creating iconic new images that instantly capture the essence of a film, studios today tend to recycle the same old cookie-cutter designs that consist of little more than a collage of photoshopped faces randomly assembled over an uninspired background shot.

Above: some runners-up among my favorite posters of the decade. From left: Black Swan by La Boca (2010); Obit (2016) by Kristin Bye; Nebraska (2013) by Blt Communications; Wreck-It Ralph (2012) designer unknown; Escapes (2017) by Brandon Schaefer.Ten years ago, not long after I had started writing about movie posters for Mubi (back when it was called The Auteurs), I was called upon to come up with my favorite movie posters of the decade. It was a daunting task since I hadn’t been keeping track quite as carefully as I have these past ten years, but it was also somewhat of a novelty since there weren’t a lot of people talking about movie posters either in print or online back then. Looking back at that list of ten years ago, there are a couple of posters I might not choose today and I’d definitely bump Neil Kellerhouse’s poster for The Girlfriend Experience...

1. Eight Hours Don’t Make a DayI don’t know for sure how much my love of this poster is tied up with my love of this film (a seven-hour 1972 German miniseries directed by R.W. Fassbinder that had never before been shown in the U.S.), except that I liked it an awful lot before I watched it (when I wrote about it back in March), and loved it even more after I’d seen it. Impeccably illustrated by British artist Sam Hadley in a wonderful pastiche of '70s advertising art, I’d say that in its unusually upbeat portrayal of a group of actors who we expect to look glum, that it’s the poster we need right now.2. Alex Garland’s film adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer’s novel Annihilation remains, to this day, one of the most incredible and powerful cinematic experiences I’ve had this year. Above: 1929 Swedish poster for The Hound Of The Baskervilles (Richard Oswald, Germany, 1929). Designer uncredited.It’s time once again for my countdown of the most popular (the most “liked” and “reblogged”) posters on my Movie Poster of the Day Tumblr over the past three months. The most popular by far, and deservedly so, was this extraordinary 1920s Swedish poster for an adaptation of Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles, which looks like some modern Mondo marvel. I had never seen it before it showed up on Heritage Auctions in March, where it sold for over $5000 (a steal). I’m not sure how Heritage dated the poster or divined which version of Hound of the Baskervilles this was for, since there are no acting or directing credits on the poster. They claim it for Richard Oswald’s 1929 German version though IMDb has a variant of the poster attached to a 1914 German adaptation.

If there are any Terrence Malick fans out there looking for more ways to display their love for the filmmaker's unique work in cinema, Mondo now has you covered. The collectible arthouse just announced that there's a whole series on the way that will honor the films of Malick, who has directed movies such as Tree of Life, The Thin Red Line and forthcoming films like Knight of Cups. "We cordially invite you to join us in celebrating the birthday of one of the most important filmmakers of all time, Sir Alfred Hitchcock." It's Hitchcock's birthday on August 13th (he would've been 114) and Mondo is celebrating by releasing three brand new prints for "a few of his most iconic films as well as some new apparel dedicated to the master of suspense." They've whipped up some fantastic art for Hitchcock's films Vertigo (1958), designed by Ghoulish Gary Pullin, and Psycho (1960), designed by Tomer Hanuka, along with a Hitch shirt. Yes, I've nagged and ranted about the various Melancholia posters that we released for the film last year, but I finally have one that I can say is damn fine. And indeed it's another Mondo poster. Justin tweeted out that their new poster for Lars von Trier's Melancholia, timed perfectly with the release of the film on DVD/Blu-Ray this week, has been unveiled on Movie Pie. It's designed by Tomer Hanuka and also has a recolored variant, both of which look stunning. If you've seen the film, you'll know exactly what scene this is from, involving Kirsten Dunst. But it's made in a way that makes it feel much more mystical, check it out. Mondo will officially release these for sale on Friday, so stay tuned to @MondoNews for updates. Mondo has a reputation to sell out their posters fast, and when I say fast, I mean within minutes. So if you are interested in any of their posters, I strongly suggest you act fast. Next inline is two posters for their Star Trek series. The first features an image for the classic 1967 episode Mirror, Mirror, and the second comes from the1966 two-parter The Menagerie.
However the poster that really has me excited is the poster seen above for David Cronenberg‘s Rabid, his 1977 horror film featuring Marilyn Chambers in the lead role, who after suffering a motorcycle accident, is taken to the plastic surgery clinic and undergoes a bizarre operation that transforms her into a rabid zombie whose bite spreads a disease. It’s a rather strange and complicated plot to get into at the moment, but it is definitely worth seeking out, if you haven’t already seen it.

In their latest set of posters, Mondo are celebrating two iconic episodes from the original Star Trek series – the classic episode Mirror, Mirror (one of the many parallel universe Trek scenarios, this one being the most memorable with an evil goatee wearing Spock!) and the two part episode The Menagerie, which rather ingeniously used footage from the original Trek pilot episode The Cage that featured Jeffrey Hunter as Enterprise Captain Christopher Pike (William Shatner’s Kirk was used instead when it came to shoot the series) to make a cerebral episode out of it.
Mondo’s posters celebrating both episodes are wildly different. Mirror Mirror has a crazy colourful scheme whilst The Menagerie is much more standard and less busy film poster, with the aliens of the movie at the forefront.
See them both in full below;
Mirror Mirror is 24″ x 36″ and is created by Tomer Hanuka. 175 are printed, costing...

The last Mondo poster, created to celebrate Guillermo del Toro's film Pan's Labyrinth, sold out in seconds. I expect the same fate for two of the three posters the company will release tomorrow. Mondo's Star Trek series continues with images for the 1967 episode Mirror, Mirror, and the 1966 two-parter The Menagerie. The latter is an early landmark in the series, as it uses footage from the rejected pilot episode The Cage, which featured Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike rather than William Shatner as James Kirk. And as a bonus, the company is selling stock of a poster for David Cronenberg's early film Rabid, in which emergency plastic surgery leads to Marilyn Chambers sprouting a stinger with which she preys on others. Oh, the stinger is in her armpit. (Of course.) The poster is a lot less lurid than you might expect for early Cronenberg -- it is almost eerie.

Here's what Tomer Hanuka had to say about the poster design.
The central idea going into this image was depicting planet Dagobah itself as a portrait of Luke’s subconscious in it’s most interesting and unformed phase. In a nightmarish sequence, Luke runs into the mist where he thinks he saw Vader. Luke finds him and a lightsaber duel ends with Vader’s decapitation . The mask cracks open on the severed head, exposing the frozen face of a dead Luke Skywalker. The suggestion here is that somewhere within...
