- Henry-Louis de La Grange was born on May 26, 1924 in Paris, France. He died on January 27, 2017 in Lonay, Vaud, Switzerland.
- He was an authority on composer Gustav Mahler; he wrote a massive biography simply titled "Gustav Mahler." He also directed or collaborated on concerts, exhibitions, festivals, and film and television documentaries about Mahler's life and works. His obsession with the composer began when he attended a concert conducted by Bruno Walter; the opening work was Mahler's 9th Symphony.
- He graduated from the University of Provence and the Yale School of Music, and studied piano in Paris under Nadia Boulanger.
- [on hearing a Mahler symphony for the first time] I was extremely surprised, perhaps even shocked to hear a huge symphony in a style that was quite unknown to me. I couldn't understand how and why this music had been written in this way.
