The legal drama “Suits” may have been the show of the summer, but another beloved USA property is on top now.
Tony Shalhoub reprises his Emmy-winning role of Adrian Monk in “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie,” a Peacock original that sees the ol’ detective with obsessive compulsive disorder return for one last case (or is it?) in the age of Covid. In the 90-minute film, which is now streaming, Monk is preparing for his stepdaughter Molly’s (Caitlin McGee) upcoming nuptials when he finds himself pulled into an investigation involving a charismatic billionaire with his eyes set on space (James Purefoy).
During its original run from 2002 to 2009, “Monk” was a critically acclaimed comedy and an Emmy mainstay, taking home eight awards in all. Much of the original series cast has returned for the sequel film, including Ted Levine, Traylor Howard, Jason Gray-Stanford, Melora Hardin and Hector Elizondo. A...

It's been ten years, but Monk is as entertaining as ever.
Mr. Monk's Last Case let us catch up with our favorite police consultant with Ocd and his friends. Everyone's lives have changed, and they all look older -- and it felt to Monk like they'd all left him behind, leading to a powerful story behind the lighthearted mystery.
[Note: If you are sensitive to discussions of suicide and other serious mental health issues, please be aware that this review will talk extensively about them.]
Although Monk was always primarily a comedy, Monk's backstory was tragic. The original series centered around how he was coping (or not) following his wife's murder, and his Ocd symptoms had gotten out of control after her death.
In this sense, the movie was no different. It balanced some extremely serious stuff with the lighthearted moments we're all used to, and one never overshadowed the other.

Adrian Monk is back with Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.
The TV movie, now streaming on Peacock, reunites the cast and creative team behind the former USA series Monk. And making the 90-minute revival felt like a homecoming for star Tony Shalhoub — who reprises his role as the crime-solving detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder — since they filmed in Toronto.
“This is going to sound insane, but we shot the first season in Toronto,” Shalhoub recently told The Hollywood Reporter, speaking 14 years after Monk wrapped an eight-season run for USA Network. The series, which ran from 2002-09, was set in San Francisco. The original pilot, however, was mostly shot in Vancouver, and all seasons after the first were made mainly in Los Angeles.

After Yang (kogonada)
I had the pleasure to speak with filmmaker kogonada about his stirring treatise on mortality, After Yang, and the moment from that conversation I return to most is him saying that “what makes art so invigorating is that you’re pursuing the ineffable.” This is a notion seeded throughout his gentle, transcendent sophomore feature. We can never truly know another person. In some ways, we will never fully know ourselves or our relationship with the world. But the search for it, the mystery, the endless pursuit—that’s the beauty of life. – Mitchell B.

Plot: Monk returns to solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly, a journalist preparing for her wedding.
Review: Running for eight years on USA, Monk held the title of the most-watched scripted series in cable history until the debut of The Walking Dead. Wrapping up in 2009, Adrian Monk returned briefly in a Covid-19 short showing the Ocd detective coping during the lockdown. Now, fourteen years after the series finale, Monk returns in his first full-length mystery, Mr. Monk’s Last Case. Reuniting the four main stars and a couple of key supporting players, Mr. Monk’s Last Case follows the detective getting back into the groove as he investigates a murder that hits very close to home. Setting up potential future standalone mystery films led by Tony Shalhoub, this is a decent story that plays more like an extended episode of the series rather than a fully realized movie.

More than 13 years ago, the world said goodbye to Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) after eight seasons on the USA Network. Monk is a genius detective riddled with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and dozens of phobias. And yet, these very qualities make him such an astute investigator — "It's a gift and a curse." Now, fans get one more sample of Monk's gift with a follow-up movie, "Mr. Monk's Last Case." The film is not a "legacy sequel" as is the trend these days, but a classical post-series TV reunion movie. It's not just the main cast that returns either, but "Monk" co-creators Andy Breckmann and David Hoberman and prolific series director Randy Zisk. The reunion feels complete because of it, since their presence means the storytelling of "Mr. Monk's Last Case" feels like, well, "Monk."

When I set out to make my short film Take Me Home, I wanted to raise questions about our responsibilities to family as we grow older. The film captures a feared transitional moment for families that include a loved one who cannot live on their own: What is inherited? How do we navigate the hurdles of the American health care system when we are living on the margins of life?
I grew up as the middle child of 11. My adoptive parents had four biological children, then adopted seven more — six of whom are Korean, several with disabilities. We grew up in a John Hughes-esque suburb of America on a picturesque street. Our family stood out whether we liked it or not. Inside the house, however, adoption and disability were the norm. Everyone was the same, because everyone was different.

Sam Fell’s Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget finds Ginger (Thandiwe Newton) and Rocky (Zachary Levi) settled down on a bucolic island sanctuary that’s entirely free of humans, their daring Great Escape-style breakout from Tweedy’s industrial farm now a distant memory. But while they and old friends like Babs (Jane Horrocks) and Fowler (David Bradley) appreciate their hard-won freedom, their young daughter, Molly (Bella Ramsey), is now at an age where this safe haven is beginning to feel like its own form of captivity.

Can you find the wolves in this picture? You'll be able to do exactly that without ever having to step outside the house when "Killers of the Flower Moon," director Martin Scorsese's latest crime epic, is made available on PVOD and digital. As much as fans of the visionary talent may have panicked a bit when Apple swooped in to purchase the distribution rights, making this his latest high-profile production to become destined for a streaming release as opposed to theaters, the streamer thankfully made the unusual move of giving "Killers of the Flower Moon" an extended run in theaters worldwide. That decision quite literally paid off as the film enjoyed a modest amount of success relative to its $200+ million budget, proving beyond a doubt that there still remains an appetite for adult-minded entertainment with lengthy runtimes, sobering source material, and underrepresented movie stars.

The first season of "Frasier" is remarkable for having all the elements that made the show so beloved. Whereas you wouldn't begrudge "Friends" fans for skipping the first season on a rewatch, and even "The Simpsons" took a while to settle into its groove, "Frasier" seemingly had it all dialed in from the outset.
In fact, the show had things figured out in the pilot, "The Good Son," which first aired in 1993. In the inagural installment, the writing is as sharp as "Frasier" ever was. Meanwhile, star Kelsey Grammer, already adept at playing the finickity psychiatrist from his years portraying him on "Cheers," is effortlessly comfortable in the lead role. Are multiverses consistent with Christian theology? Personally, I have my doubts, but in Angel Studios’ religious-minded sci-fi thriller “The Shift,” the notion that there could be infinite parallel realities offers an original, if flawed model to test its main character’s faith.
Here’s how it works: A churchgoing man named Kevin (Kristoffer Polaha) meets and marries his dream woman, Molly (Elizabeth Tabish), only to have his happy life whisked away from him by a steely-eyed stranger who calls himself “the Benefactor” (Neal McDonough). Kevin’s desperate to get back to his wife, but this Benefactor guy seems determined to rattle his convictions, trying to force Kevin to reject his beliefs and go along with the rest of society’s atheist attitudes.
That’s where the movie’s other big biblical connection comes in. “The Shift” is billed as a contemporary retelling of the book of Job, in which God...

Martin Scorsese is breaking down exactly why Killers of the Flower Moon ended up being so focused on the villainous Ernest Burkhart, played by Leonardo DiCaprio.
The director spoke about the topic following some criticism the film has received from the Indigenous community. During a virtual press event Wednesday, Scorsese was joined by stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons.
The Apple TV+ film tells the real-life tragedy of the 1920s murders of Osage Nation members after oil was found on their Oklahoma land. It has garnered considerable acclaim from critics. But some members of the Indigenous community have said the story should have focused more on the character Mollie Burkhart (Gladstone) and other Osage impacted by the murders. There has also been criticism that DiCaprio’s Ernest was made to seem overly sympathetic, and shouldn’t have been the film’s main focus. Questions for...

Rocky, Ginger and their family’s newest member Molly lead the charge in a fight to free their fellow chickens from a deadly nugget plot in the first full trailer for Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget.
Hailing from the Academy and BAFTA award-winning Aardman animation studio and Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated director Sam Fell, it’s the long-awaited follow-up to the highest-grossing stop-motion animated film ever, Chicken Run.
After pulling off their escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger (Thandiwe Newton) and Rocky (Zachary Levi) have built a life on an island away from the human world — a sanctuary alongside the flock with their newest hatch, Molly (Bella Ramsey). “We’ve put the past behind us,” Ginger says in the two-and-a-half-minute trailer. “We have to think about Molly now.”
A curious Molly is unaware of the world across the water, the place her parents and community fled from, with Ginger fearing for her daughter.

Updated with details: Jimmy Kimmel is set to host the 96th Academy Awards, ABC has confirmed, marking the fourth time and second straight year that the Jimmy Kimmel Live! mainstay has taken the gig. The ceremony is March 10 on the Disney-owned network.
“I always dreamed of hosting the Oscars exactly four times,” Kimmel joked in a statement.
Along with emceeing Hollywood’s Biggest Night this past March, he also hosted in 2017 and 2018. After the latter show drew then-record low ratings, the broadcast went hostless in 2019, 2020, and 2021, when the Oscars were heavily pandemic-affected and stripped down, drawing the lowest ratings ever.
Kimmel is a double Emmy winner and 20-time nominee, including noms for all three of his previous Academy Award gigs. He also is the answer to a unique Oscar trivia question: He presided over the infamous “envelope-gate” show in 2017, when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were handed the wrong envelope...

Emmy Award winner Jimmy Kimmel is back as the host for the upcoming 2024 Oscars ceremony, marking the late-night star’s fourth time fronting the show. Emmy nominee Molly McNearney will also return to serve as an executive producer for the second consecutive year in a row.
The “Jimmy Kimmel Live” host previously led the 2017, 2018 and 2023 telecasts. The 2017 ceremony produced the now infamous “La La Land” and “Moonlight” best picture screw-up. Kimmel will now sit alongside other four-peaters such as Whoopi Goldberg and Jack Lemmon. The only people to host more times are Johnny Carson (5), Billy Crystal (9) and Bob Hope (11).
“I always dreamed of hosting the Oscars exactly four times,” said Kimmel in a statement. McNearney adding that she’s “especially honored to be part of the Oscars team this year.”

Jimmy Kimmel will return to the Oscar stage once again.
The ABC late night host has signed on to host the 96th Academy Awards, marking his fourth time in the role. The appointment is hardly surprising, of course, as Kimmel has decades of live TV experience and a longstanding relationship with Disney.
“I always dreamed of hosting the Oscars exactly four times,” joked Kimmel.
His announcement follows the mid-October news that the Academy set a producing team, a returning director and a first-time showrunner in Raj Kapoor, a live TV and go-to Las Vegas residency producer, who’s worked on the Academy Awards telecast for the last seven years. Kimmel’s wife and Jimmy Kimmel Live co-head writer Molly McNearney is also an executive producer for the telecast.

Martin Scorsese‘s “Killers of the Flower Moon” opens with a flurry of images and incidents that quickly establish the world and era of the film. Moving from an Osage pipe ceremony to a slow-motion shot of characters dancing in gushing oil and then a newsreel recreation that acclimates the viewer to the historical context, Scorsese and co-screenwriter Eric Roth create one of the most immediately involving openings in recent movies. Yet according to Scorsese, a completely different prologue was initially planned.
“Eric and I originally had the idea that we should do the Oklahoma land rush,” Scorsese told IndieWire. “He had written a five- or seven-page description with beautiful vignettes, and I was going to shoot it all in one take. We had it all worked out that it would take another month with a separate unit.” Shooting the sprawling action sequence would have allowed Scorsese to pay tribute...
