At 15, David Alvarez became one of the youngest Tony Award winners in history, sharing Best Actor in a Musical with his “Billy Elliott” co-stars Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish at the 2009 awards ceremony. But rather than jumping to another lavish Broadway production, Alvarez fulfilled a lifelong dream by joining the military.
“When I joined the military, I never thought I’d come back to acting or the arts in general,” he tells Gold Derby. “I was actually thinking about making it a career. I wanted to become an officer and hopefully one day a general.”
But after three years, Alvarez realized he missed the arts community. He returned to Broadway in 2015 as a swing performer in “On the Town,” and then took another break to backpack through Mexico and, eventually, study to become a philosophy professor. It was during this stage of his life that casting director Cindy Tolan reached...

David Alvarez, 15; Trent Kowalik, 14; Kiril Kulish, 15Collectively they're known as "the Billys," but individually one of them spends three hours on the stage each night dancing his heart out as the little Geordie who could in Broadway's "Billy Elliot: The Musical." (In February the musical added Tommy Batchelor, making a fourth, but only Alvarez, Kulish, and Kowalik were eligible to make history by jointly earning a Tony for their role—which they did this year.) They're three remarkable boys, dedicated to dance since they could practically walk (Canadian Alvarez has already danced at the Kennedy Center and Metropolitan Opera House; Kulish is a Latin Ballroom National Champion; Kowalik is an Irish Dancing World Champion) and all are only good in their parts until their hormones kick in and voices crack (the character of Billy is 11), after which they'll be replaced. "It's hard putting everything together—the singing, the dancing, the acting,...

Billy Elliott stars David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik, and Kiril Kulish enjoy a hard-earned moment of freedom. Photograph courtesy of PatrickMcMullan.com Hey, Trent Kowalik, David Alvarez, and Kiril Kulish, you just won a Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. What are you going to do next? Well, Monday evening the three teenage alternating leads of Billy Elliott were crowded around a flat-screen TV monitor at the Nintendo World store on Rockefeller Plaza punching and grappling their way through LucasArts new Wii game, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings. As filmmaker James Toback, actress Debra Winger, Project Playlist C.E.O. John Sykes, and Beastie Boy Adam Yauch wandered around the video gamery’s second floor space trying out the giveaway Indy fedoras and toy bullwhips, Kowalik managed a phone interview in between playing the game and watching his co-stars and some cousins who’d accompanied him take their turn.

Rags-to-riches story "Billy Elliot" had a massive night at the 63rd annual Tony Awards on Sunday, winning 10 awards at the annual celebration of all things Broadway. But despite onstage cameos from Liza Minnelli and Dolly Parton and a top-notch hosting job by "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris, on Monday morning most people were talking about how the show almost killed Bret Michaels.
In honor of the nominations for "Rock of Ages," a theatrical celebration of '80s-era hair metal, Poison took the stage to perform their iconic "Nothin' But a Good Time" with the cast of the musical. Led by "Rock of Love" star/singer Bret Michaels, the band...

Billy Elliot The Musical stole the show at the 2009 Tony Awards on Sunday (7Jun09) night, winning an astonishing 10 prizes.
The show scooped the prestigious Best Musical award and there were statuettes for writer Lee Hall, director Stephen Daldry and its three young stars David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik, and Kiril Kulish.
Elsewhere, acting legend Angela Lansbury made Broadway history by winning her record-equalling fifth Tony.
Lansbury was awarded the Best Featured Actress in a Play prize for her role in Blithe Spirit, bringing her level with five-time Tony winner Julie Harris.
After accepting her award, the 83-year-old star said, "I had no plan to tie Julie Harris' record of five Tony Awards; she is the greatest actress of our time. As for my sixth, don't bet on it - but there are some roles I could still play on Broadway. I would do Off-Broadway, as long as I can keep acting - it's the only thing I know how I do."
There was also an acting award for Marcia Gay Harden for her performance in God of Carnage, which was named Best Play.
Liza Minnelli's production Liza's at The Palace won Best Special Theatrical Event.
Celebrity guests at the bash at Manhattan's Radio City Musical Hall, including Sir Elton John, Jane Fonda and Kevin Spacey, were treated to musical performances of shows currently gracing New York's theatre district.
And there were tributes to Broadway stars who have died in the past year, including Paul Newman, Natasha Richardson, Bea Arthur, Eartha Kitt and theatre impresario Gerald Schoenfeld.

Billy Elliot, The Musical is leading the way at this year's Tony Awards after scooping 15 nominations - tying with The Producers for the most nominations ever garnered by one show.
The production, based on the 2000 film about a coal miner's son who dreams of becoming a ballet dancer, will go up against Next To Normal, Shrek The Musical and Rock Of Ages in the coveted Best Musical category at the 63rd annual prizegiving, which honours the best on Broadway.

Sir Elton John's Broadway musical Billy Elliot has taken its success from the London stage and opened to rave reviews on Broadway.
The show got off to a shaky start when a preview performance last month had to be cancelled just minutes before its start due to technical problems.
But that hasn't stopped critics from praising the cast, crew and John's own efforts to take on the New York stage with his dance show's Broadway debut on Thursday.
One critic for the New York Times calls the show "one of the freshest, most exciting uses of narrative dance I've seen in years".
While another from USA Today writes, "Director Stephen Daldry and his company infuse them with irresistible heart", adding: "Peter Darling's choreography makes the raw, restless exuberance of youth accessible to all."
But reports from the New York Daily News add that the show may need some tweaking and should rely less on the cheerfulness of its young actors David Alvarez, 14, Kiril Kulish, 14 and Trent Kowalik, 13 - who alternate in the role of Billy Elliot.
The critic adds, "Even a few stumbles can't spoil a show that's so sweet and exhilarating that at times you feel like leaping."...
