Mr-9: Do or Die is based on the first of a long-running series of mostly ghost-written novels chronicling the adventures of Masud Rana, Bangladesh’s answer to James Bond. Somewhat surprisingly given there are 500 or so novels in the franchise, this is only the second attempt at bringing them to the screen, the first being Masud Rana in 1974. Fifty years later, will the world be more receptive to the Bangladeshi Bond?
The film certainly starts on a familiar note with Rana running unnoticed across wide open lawns in broad daylight without being noticed. Despite his best efforts and his leaving a trail of bodies behind him, his target gets away and the two agents he was supposed to rescued are killed.

In what promises to be a gripping cinematic experience, the trailer for Boneyard, set for a 2024 release, has just been launched, stirring anticipation amongst thriller and action aficionados worldwide. Directed by Asif Akbar and featuring a cast including Mel Gibson, Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson, Nora Zehetner, Brian Van Holt, and Randall J. Bacon, Boneyard is already shaping up to be a must-watch.
Set against the stark backdrop of the New Mexico desert, the film is inspired by harrowing true crime stories. It plunges viewers into an intense narrative where the skeletal remains of 11 women & girls set off an extensive investigation. Police Chief Carter (portrayed by 50 Cent), alongside Detective Ortega (Brian Van Holt) and the unyielding Agent Petrovick (Mel Gibson), leads a multi-agency taskforce on a relentless quest to unearth the identity of the killer.
The plot thickens as the trio’s divergent agendas and methodologies clash, weaving a complex tapestry of intrigue and suspicion.

Here we go again. In recent years, Mel Gibson’s found himself stuck in a never-ending series of Dtv-style action thrillers, similar to the kind of fare Bruce Willis churned out before his retirement. Along with his contemporaries like John Travolta, John Cusack and many others, Gibson seems totally stuck in a rut, with virtually all of these films (most of which he only has minor roles in) going totally unnoticed. Has anyone seen Panama, Agent Game, On the Line, Confidential Informant, Desperation Road, Dangerous or Force of Nature? There have been some bright spots, such as the solid Bandit (a movie he was proud of when I interviewed him) or Fatman, but for the most part, Gibson’s career as an actor in mainstream movies seems limited to this kind of fare, which is a shame.
Nevertheless, he’s still out there cranking out VOD movies, with Boneyard being the latest.

Skeletons in the Closet is the latest film from director Asif Akbar. After sitting through several abysmal films he’s directed, most recently Clown Motel as well as an even larger pile of duds he was a producer on, I knew enough not to have high expectations. Even that wasn’t enough preparation for what I was about to endure.
Mark and Valentina are dealing with financial problems. Those problems are about to get a lot worse, as instead of the raise he was expecting, Mark gets a pink slip. As if that wasn’t enough bad news, their daughter Jenny’s has brain cancer and the doctors are willing to let her die unless Mark and Valentina can come...

Maternal instincts and emotions make for a strong foundation in horror movie narratives, and when paired with well-crafted religio-cultural subtext, they can give birth to timeless classics. Perhaps a common primal tone allows a seamless assimilation of themes of maternity and religion, as is seen in a number of acclaimed titles through the years. Bangladeshi-American director Asif Akbar’s latest venture, Skeletons in the Closet, tried to recreate that magic by drawing upon legends of Mexican folk Catholicism within the Latinidad familial heritage. Instead, an atrocious and convoluted plotline, non-existent characterization, and poor visual effects make this movie a horrible mess, which only serves to malign the late phases of the career of its prolific cast. The gulf between intention and application is so vast in the moviemaking effort with this one that even the most hard-core horror fans who have grown tolerant of the worst of B-movies will find it a tepid,...

Mel Gibson and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson are ready to show the world they’re bad to the bone with Boneyard. Sorry, I couldn’t resist. The duo’s true crime thriller project is heading to the Cannes market, with Lionsgate leading the charge for another hot silver-screen serial killer story. Exclusive: Udo Kier (Downsizing), Oscar nominee Sally Kirkland (Anna) and Louis Mandylor (The Mercenary) have joined Terrence Dashon Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr, Clifton Powell and Valery M. Ortiz in horror-thriller Skeletons In The Closet, which is currently in production in the U.S.
A few days after the movie began last month the project changed director from Lance Kawas to Asif Akbar. The production tells us this was down to creative differences. In Skeletons In The Closet, haunted by a malevolent spirit since childhood, a desperate mother allows herself to become possessed in order to save the life of her terminally ill daughter. Script is by Koji Steven Sakai and Joshua A. Cohen. The original story comes from Al Bravo. Producers are Bravo, Asif Akbar, Sakai, Colin Bates, Stan Erdreich and Monica R. Cooper. The project reunites Oscar nominee Howard and Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr after they starred in Lee Daniels’ The Butler.

A talky and lethargic home-invasion thriller, “The Commando” amounts to an inept crime drama stuffed with banal dialogue and irrelevant supporting characters to pad its feature-length running time. Even Mickey Rourke devotees will find the movie exhausting, since the actor disappears from the film after the first 20 minutes and doesn’t return until the anti-climactic finale, where everyone involved seems to be glad the thing is finally over with.
Shot over 11 days in New Mexico during the Covid pandemic, the film tries to make do with limited locations. This is why a third of the movie is comprised of people spouting nonsense while sitting inside cars.
Rourke plays Johnny, a freshly sprung convict who reunites with his old crew to retake the $3 million of stolen money he hid inside a house before he was arrested. Michael Jai White is James, a DEA agent suffering from Ptsd after inadvertently killing three...

The death of bubbly comedian Brittany Murphy at 32 was puzzling and deeply tragic. The actress, who may be best remembered from her role as burnout turned knockout in Clueless, died under mysterious circumstances in 2009, and gossip and strange rumors persisted for months and years after. Now these rumors and a whole host of new ones will be the subject of at least one film about Murphy and her death. Film School Rejects received a bizarre press report that pronounces "Brittany Murphy.s Mysterious Death Chronicled in Controversial New Documentary; Biopic on the 8 Mile Star to Follow in 2014.. Title: Top Priority: The Terror Within Director: Asif Akbar An intensely felt but jumbled and poorly reasoned cinematic treatise against governmental bureaucracy run amok and specifically a series of Constitutional rights abuses by the Department of Homeland Security, documentary “Top Priority: The Terror Within” tells the story of Julia Davis, a whistleblower who found herself on the receiving end of a years-long campaign of vindictive persecution. A tangled mess of sprawling and sometimes vague allegations never wrestled into any sort of coherent and compelling shape, the movie chronicles a shocking story, but one that seems better suited to the television news magazine format, or at least a more polished, experienced nonfiction hand.
