Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios has acquired Hollywood Ending, a new documentary from UnTypical, a Vice Studios Group company, and Library Films. Directed by Rebecca Chaiklin (Tiger King), the film follows the downfall of Zach Horwitz, the charismatic “midwestern, millennial Madoff” who ran a $690M Ponzi scheme under the noses of those closest to him.
Also known by his stage name Zach Avery, Horwitz is a former actor who deceived investors by falsely claiming to have lucrative licensing deals with such prominent streaming platforms as Netflix and HBO. His scheme began around 2014 when he started soliciting funds from investors, promising high returns from licensing deals for movies. Horwitz operated through his company, 1inMM Capital LLC, which he presented as successful in film distribution. To maintain the illusion of legitimacy, he provided investors with fake documents, including fabricated licensing agreements and emails purportedly from entertainment executives.

Vice Studios had a new hit on its hands with the late May launch of “Bama Rush,” which the studio’s co-founder and chief content officer Danny Gabai says was Max’s most-streamed doc feature debut.
But with that large viewership also came a significant discourse surrounding the extent to which “Bama Rush” director Rachel Fleit is present in her own doc about college students “rushing” to get into the sororities at the University of Alabama. That choice didn’t sit well with people who avidly followed the #BamaRush phenomenon that first swept TikTok in the summer of 2021 and again last “season” and would have preferred more behind-the-scenes content about the rush process, rather than portions devoted to Fleit’s reaction to the situation.
“In making any content, you have to make directorial and authorial choices,” Gabai told Variety. “And very early on, we saw young women were revealing that...

ESPN has released an exclusive clip from a new two-part documentary that will shed light on the behind-the-scenes story of the famed reality competition show “American Gladiators.”
From 1989 to 1996, “American Gladiators” was one of the most popular syndicated programs in television, a competition show that predated the reality TV era but used many of the same techniques to attract viewers. Every week, “amateur” contestants would go up against a cast of “professional” gladiators in a range of physical competitions, setting up David versus Goliath matchups that were popular with big television audiences but also earned considerable criticism for being “crash TV”.
The documentary, which will debut on May 30 and 31 on ESPN and be made available on ESPN+ following its premiere, features original interviews with Johnny Ferraro, Deron McBee (‘Malibu’), Michael Horton (‘Gemini’), Lynn ‘Red’ Williams (‘Sabre’), the late William Billy Smith (‘Thunder’) and Salina Bartunek (‘Elektra’).
“What we were doing consumed us so much.

Utopia and Showtime have partnered to acquire “Meet Me in the Bathroom,” the documentary film about the early 2000s New York City rock and roll scene that made its premiere at this year’s Sundance.
Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern directed the film that’s based on the 2017 book by Lizzy Goodman. Goodman’s book is a comprehensive oral history of the bands that redefined the rock scene in the early 2000s and late ’90s, including The Strokes, Interpol, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD Soundsystem and more. The film specifically is an assemble of archival footage from that era and forgoes talking head interviews, instead featuring rare early performances and behind the scenes looks at NYC’s top bands.
Utopia will release the film theatrically in theaters later this year, and Showtime will air “Meet Me in the Bathroom” by the end of 2022.

Neon has made the first acquisition out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, taking North American rights to Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s Flee for an undisclosed seven-figure sum after an overnight bidding war.
The film, executive produced by Riz Ahmed and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, was an official selection for Cannes 2020 and made its debut on opening night of Sundance in the World Documentary Competition. Rasmussen directed and co-wrote the movie with Amin Nawabi.
Playing in the world premiere section, Flee follows Nawabi, who arrives as an unaccompanied minor in Denmark from Afghanistan. Today, he is a successful academic and is getting married to his longtime boyfriend. A secret he has been hiding for 20 years threatens to ruin the life he has built. Recounted mostly through animation to Rasmussen — his close friend and high school classmate, he tells for the first time the story of his extraordinary journey as a child refugee from Afghanistan.

‘Judy & Punch.’
Fox/Chernin Entertainment’s Ford v Ferrari easily retained pole position in another soft weekend at Australian cinemas while Mirrah Foulkes’ writing and directing debut Judy & Punch struggled.
Foulkes’ savage satire starring Damon Herriman and Mia Wasikowska as husband-and-wife puppeteers in an anarchic world has garnered a 79 per cent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes since the world premiere at Sundance.
But critical acclaim often doesn’t reflect cinemagoers’ tastes, particularly for niche titles which are as challenging and dark in tone as this. The Madman Entertainment release fetched $29,000 on 38 screens last weekend and $108,000 with festival screenings.
Cinema Nova’s Natalie Miller says: “I think the title is a bit of a hindrance as people don’t know if it’s a children’s film and would find it quite different and confronting, despite great acting.”

Amazon Studio’s “The Report” will be released theatrically in the U.K. three weeks before it lands on the Prime Video streaming service. The Scott Z. Burns film tells the story of Daniel J. Jones, a U.S. Senate staffer who worked to reveal that truth about an “enhanced interrogation” program run by the CIA in the wake of 9/11. The U.K. release strategy mirrors that of the U.S., where the awards hopeful will be released in theaters two weeks before it hits Svod, starting Sept. 27.
Adam Driver, Annette Bening, Jon Hamm, Maura Tierney and Michael C. Hall star in the film. It is produced by Steven Soderbergh alongside Jennifer Fox, Scott Z. Burns, Kerry Orent, Michael Sugar, Eddy Moretti and Danny Gabai.
Curzon said that “The Report” will be given key positioning in the U.K. for awards season. It previously collaborated with Amazon on the U.K.

Amazon Studios will release the political thriller “The Report” in movie theaters on Sept. 27, the studio announced on Thursday. The studio will then drop the film on Amazon Prime Video on Oct. 11.
The film, which stars Adam Driver, Annette Bening and Jon Hamm, takes place in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, as CIA agents begin using extreme interrogation tactics on people they think were behind it. The film follows one man’s pursuit of justice and adherence to oversight and accountability and chronicles not only the CIA’s secret torture program but also the struggle to release the report that tested the nation’s separation of powers and the rule of law.
Amazon snapped up the indie for $14 million following its premiere at January’s Sundance Film Festival.

“The Report,” a politically charged thriller about the CIA’s use of torture, has sold to Amazon Studios following its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Variety has learned. The price is in the $14 million range and the pact is for global rights.

Netflix said Monday it has acquired Chris Smith’s Fyre, a documentary about the uber-fail 2017 Fyre Festival in the Bahamas that spawned lawsuits over its poor organization and false claims. Smith, who directed Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond, connected with the organizers to tell a behind the scenes tale. Netflix will bow the docu on January 18.
Created by Billy McFarland and Ja Rule, Fyre was promoted as a luxury music festival on a private island featuring bikini-clad supermodels, A-List musical performances and posh amenities. The reality was far from the promises — boxed lunches, a tent city and no music. McFarland was sentenced in October to six years in prison for fraud.
Check out the Frye teaser above.
Smith wrote and directed and produced with Vice Studios’ Danny Gabai and Jerry Media’s Mick Purzycki. Brett Kincaid, Max Pollack, Matthew Rowean, Gabrielle Bluestone, James Ohliger and Elliot Tebele are executive producers.

Cornerstone Films is handling sales on the title in Afm.
Screen can unveil a first look at Mia Wasikowska in Australian actress Mirrah Foulkes’ feature directing debut Judy And Punch.
Cornerstone is handling international sales at Afm on the title and is showing footage at the market. The film is a fictional origin story that turns the classic puppet show on its head. It is a subversive interpretation that sees puppeteers Judy and her husband Punch trying to resurrect their marionette show in an anarchic town on the brink of mob rule.
The Seaside Productions and Vice Studios feature is now in post-production.

Oath’s immersive entertainment studio Ryot has partnered with Vice Studios to co-finance and co-produce a series of documentary films. The two-year, multi-million dollar partnership emerged after Verizon shut down Go90, for which Vice was producing short-form content.
“We’ve always admired and loved Vice as colleagues,” said head of Ryot Films Hayley Pappas in an interview with Variety this week. “We have a shared DNA,” added Ryot co-founder and CEO Bryn Mooser.
“We’ve been friends with the Ryot team since they started, and couldn’t be more excited about their shared love for provocative, humanistic stories,” said Vice Studios executive creative director Danny Gabai. “When we saw an opportunity to team up and work together to support the best documentary filmmaking talent out there, we knew we had to jump at the opportunity.”
Mooser and Pappas didn’t want to reveal any projects of the new fund just yet,...
