Plot: Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

Fittingly for a series in which everybody seems to be engaging in some form of Classic Hollywood cosplay, the Rosebud moment in BritBox’s Archie is delivered by an actor playing comedy icon Danny Kaye.
Affecting a stereotypical German therapist accent — accents on top of accents on top of accents is the Archie way — Kaye cautions young Dyan Cannon (Laura Aikman) that her relationship with the more seasoned Cary Grant (Jason Isaacs) is destined for complications with the warning, “Men who have difficult relationships with their mothers always carry it over to the women that they love.”
There’s no reason for Kaye to make such an observation if he hasn’t been watching the two previous hours of Jeff Pope’s four-episode production. But for the series’ actual audience, his analysis will come across as both obvious and superficial — a bit like Archie itself.
Ultimately, it’s a bit more complicated than that.

In 2004, The Indian Ocean tsunami hit parts of Southeast Asia, claiming more than 227,898 lives and devastating countless families who were torn apart due to the environmental disaster. The story of María Belón, who was among several who experienced and survived the tsunami in Khao Lak, Thailand serves as the inspiration for Spanish filmmaker J. A. Bayona's disaster drama, "The Impossible." Belón herself was involved with the screenwriting process of the film to ensure the authenticity of the events, and apart from a few alterations made for dramatic effect, "The Impossible" captures the harrowing perspective of disaster survivors who often have to contend with the helpless despair of being separated from their loved ones.
Perhaps the appeal of this raw, vulnerable human sentiment is the reason why "The Impossible" has currently earned a place in the Top 10 Netflix Charts in the U.S. Released in 2012, "The Impossible" tells a story...

Isaacs will get some assistance in bringing Grant the Bristol, England-born actor to life. Dainton Anderson, Calam Lynch and Oaklee Pendergast play young versions of Archie Leach.

Easily one of the best movies of its kind, J.A. Bayona’s minute-by-minute tale of survival poses an immediate challenge to audiences: could I survive that? The genuinely terrifying true story of one family lost in the middle of a devastating disaster is even more relevant now, with similar disasters seemingly happening daily. The near-flawless direction concentrates on the direct experience of a mother and son, who in just a couple of days learn the meaning of human concern and kindness. It’s a Spanish production (in English); Naomi Watts received an Oscar nomination and Ewan McGregor and young Tom Holland give strong performances. We reach back ten years for this review.

Synopsis: 40 years after the first haunting at Eel Marsh House, a group of children evacuated from WWII London arrive, awakening the house's darkest inhabitant.
Director: Tom Harper
Writer: Jon Croker
Actors: Helen McCrory, Phoebe Fox.
When I heard The Woman in Black: Angel of Death was being made, I was instantly curious. How could you continue this particular story while managing to keep the scares fresh and the story exciting? There's always the case that the sequel wouldn't live up to the original, yeah, but I was just curious as to where they would take this tormented lady in black.
Well, what I got left me with a shrug -- The Woman in Black 2 has terrific cinematography, striking set design and solid acting from all involved - and even the setting and premise of this story show promise - but unfortunately, this...

Flawed but genuinely creepy ghost story The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death is disappointing, but only because it comes close to greatness. Director Tom Harper and screenwriters Jon Croker and Susan Hill take great pains to get inside the heads of their traumatized protagonists: British civilians who, during WWII, struggle to keep calm and cope privately. But while Harper does often earn visceral scares from creaking floorboards and ink-black shadows, the potent, quiet spell is also periodically broken by gratuitous jump scares.
The sudden (but frequent!) appearance of chalk-white ghosts only distracts from the film's compelling focus on haunted survivors like Eve (Phoebe Fox), a sensitive young nurse, and Edward (Oaklee Pendergast), one of a dozen orphans Eve and her dis...

Blitzkrieg Bop: Harper’s Demurely Serviceable Horror Sequel Revels in Cheap Thrills
Director James Watkins scored a sleeper hit with his 2012 sophomore film, The Woman in Black, a UK period piece horror film concerning a nasty spirit stealing village children for her own very personal reasons. Moody ambience, a distinct creepy curio motif, and headlined by the dependable likes of Daniel Radcliffe, Ciaran Hinds and Janet McTeer (the film receiving release around the time her Oscar nod for Albert Nobbs was announced), it was surprisingly adept in comparison to the usual effort administered in such derivative genre fare (though it isn’t nearly as taut as Watkins’s 2008 debut film, Eden Lake). And so, without further ado, a sequel was born (to be fair, this is the first sequel from Hammer Productions since 1974), this time directed by Tom Harper and sans any original cast members for The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death.

Don't you know you shouldn't ask questions and just give us your money for something you have already been through one-thousand timesc Just accept it... That will be thirteen dollars please. Thank you, theater one to your left. This is the first review for 2015, and I hope The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death does not set the tone for what would be a dreadful year. UK, 2015
After 2012’s The Woman in Black became the highest grossing British horror film in 20 years, some sort of sequel or spin-off capitalising on that success seemed inevitable, even if the ending of director James Watkins and writer Jane Goldman’s adaptation of Susan Hill’s source novel didn’t exactly allow much leeway for star Daniel Radcliffe’s return. The solution for sequel Angel of Death: move the action forward a couple of decades from the Edwardian Era to 1941, thereby negating the need to retain any of the original players.
As German bombings terrorise London during the Blitz of World War II, a young schoolteacher, Eve (Phoebe Fox), and a headmistress (Helen McCrory, recognisable to younger viewers as Narcissa Malfoy in Radcliffe’s Harry Potter series) evacuate a group of children to the...

Set in a gloomy house where you can almost make out shapes skittering through the shadows, “The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death” is the kind of horror movie where you can see the smart, stylish scare film that’s constantly being obscured by cheap and easy jolts.
Director Tom Harper and screenwriter Jon Croker offer up plenty of the atmosphere we’ve come to expect from Hammer horror films — both in the studio’s heyday and in its latest incarnation — but every good idea this sequel has to offer winds up taking a backseat to the most obvious cat-in-the-closet “Boo!

2012′s The Woman in Black was based on Susan Hill’s novel of the same name, and went on to become the highest grossing British horror film in over two decades, giving the revival of Hammer Film Productions a suitable jolt after some middling financial success with the likes of Let Me In and The Resident. 2015′s Angel of Death is not based on another Hill novel, but the author has had input into the story of the sequel, which is set many years later and does not feature Daniel Radcliffe this time round.
Set forty years after the events of The Woman in Black, Angel of Death sees a group of schoolchildren and teachers taking refuge in the abandoned Eel Marsh House, having been evacuated from London to the countryside during the Blitz of World War II. ★★★☆☆ Based on the harrowing true story of one family caught up in the 2004 tsunami, Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) returned to screens last year with The Impossible (Lo imposible, 2012), a gruelling yet uplifting tale of human endurance amidst a cataclysmic natural disaster. Much was made at the time of Bayona's decision to change the aforementioned family's nationality from Spanish (Belón) to British (Bennett), presumably to make the film more saleable in English-language territories. Claims of 'white-washing' still remain slightly misplaced, but there is something missing from this well-intentioned drama.
Maria (Naomi Watts), husband Henry (Ewan McGregor) and the married couple's three sons (Tom Holland, Samuel Joslin, Oaklee Pendergast) are en route to a popular Thai coastal resort for a much-needed winter vacation. After spending an idyllic Christmas Day together, the holidaymakers begin their Boxing Day relaxing around the complex's pool. Suddenly, a terrifying roar rises up from the direction of the beach,...

Film: "The Impossible"; Cast: Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor, Tom Holland, Samuel Joslin, Oaklee Pendergast, Marta Etura, Ploy Jindachote and Johan Sundberg; Director: Juan Antonio Bayona; Rating: *** - captures hearts with performances.
If the tsunami of Dec 26, 2004, which killed nearly a quarter of a million people in 14 countries, has not touched your lives, then "The impossible' will definitely do that and much more. You are bound to be swept off by the emotional quotient of the killer waves.
Urgent yet measured, like the onrushing tide, "The Impossible" is a real-life disaster film with scenes that would churn your stomach.

The Impossible | Quartet | Hors Satan | McCullin | Playing For Keeps | Repulsion | Texas Chainsaw 3D
The Impossible (12A) (Juan Antonio Bayona, 2012, Spa) Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, Tom Holland, Oaklee Pendergast, Samuel Joslin. 114 mins
It was less than ten years ago, but already the Indian Ocean Tsunami has passed from a documentary subject to disaster-movie material. To injurious timing, though, this epic adds the insult of assuming we're only interested in how it affected white people. It's firmly focused on the plight of a British family, separated by the disaster. It's based on a true story, and impressively mounted, but that's no excuse for the myopic tastelessness.
Quartet (12A) (Dustin Hoffman, 2012, UK) Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, ichael Gambon. 98 mins
Theatricality is built into Hoffman's directing debut, a gentle senior-centric comedy set in a country home for retired musicians. Opera diva Smith's arrival ruffles feathers and stirs up ancient memories.
Hors Satan (15) (Bruno Dumont,...

The release of the original Airport in 1970 began a new type of cinema genre: the “disaster” movie. For the next ten years or so the big studios (and some small) hit upon the formula of throwing a whole bunch of stars together (often providing work for many former screen gods and goddesses) and have them try to survive a catastrophe. One producer, Irwin Allen, became known as the disaster movie king with The Posiedon Adventure and The Towering Inferno. These films were thought of as grand escapist entertainments, popcorn flicks. But what about a disaster that really happened? True life disasters have been the backdrop for many Hollywood epics such as San Francisco and In Old Chicago. Those films had fictional characters in stories set in those calamities. The Impossible is the story of how a real family dealt with a real event that we all saw news reports of several years ago.

The first weekend of the new year kicks off with Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona's disaster film about the catastrophic 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The Impossible stars Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor as a young British couple vacationing in a paradise resort in Khao Lak, Thailand, with their three sons: Lucas (Tom Holland), Simon (Oaklee Pendergast) and Thomas (Samuel Joslin). What looks like days of laughter and play time winds up being a nightmare for survivial from towering waves and floating debris.
