In 1992, four years before the death of a then-unknown singer named Eva Cassidy, and eight before she would achieve posthumous, worldwide fame, she had a dream goal for her career. “Eva had a fantasy of one day having a full orchestra back her up,” says Chris Biondo, the singer’s original arranger and bandmate. “To her, that was the greatest place you could be musically.”
In fact, she and Chris had a specific role model for her fantasy project: Natalie Cole’s album Unforgettable, a collection of standards that appeared the previous year which, thanks to the marvels of studio sorcery, created a duet between Natalie and her late father, Nat King Cole, on the title song. For Cassidy, such a project would have been impossible to finance at the time, nearly a decade before she would have two UK number one albums, a number one single with “What a Wonderful World...

The Society of Composers & Lyricists has announced the nominations for its fourth annual honors for music in films, TV and video games, with French composer Alexandre Desplat and American composer Bear McCreary each scoring double nominations.
Scl, the primary organization for professional media composers, will present its awards Feb. 15 at the Skirball Cultural Center, with singer-actor-songwriter Darren Criss as host.
Voting ended Wednesday night in seven categories, just hours after the Motion Picture Academy announced its shortlists for song and score for 2022 films. The contrast between the lists is striking, with only five score nominees and six song contenders matching those on the 15-title Oscar shortlists.
The Scl nominees for outstanding score for a studio or independent film that also made Oscar’s shortlist on Wednesday are Alexandre Desplat (“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio”), Carter Burwell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Michael Abels (“Nope”), John Powell (“Don’t Worry Darling”) and Son...

The television academy first formally acknowledged the art of small screen music composition by honoring the “Dragnet” score in 1955, and they have similarly awarded other series every year since 1968. Since 2019, only continuing scripted shows have been allowed to compete for the Best Music for Series Emmy, while others are now either relegated to the Best Music for Limited Series or Best Music for Documentary Series categories.
The 2022 slate of Best Music for Series nominees includes comedies “The Flight Attendant” (HBO Max), “Only Murders in the Building” (Hulu) and “Schmigadoon!” (Apple TV+) and dramas “Loki” (Disney+), “Severance” (Apple TV+) and “Succession” (HBO). Each nominated composer, most of whom have been recognized before, currently has a shot at achieving their first victory in this category. When composers are struggling on a piece, sometimes all it takes is one simple directive or another set of eyes — or ears, rather — to help them crack it. For “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” composers Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore, everything became crystal clear when Amy Sherman-Palladino told them that the Harry Belafonte song they had to write should be a wedding toast, not a pop hit. The duo hails from the theater world, where often complete strangers help them unlock pieces.
“One of the things that we get the option of doing that’s so different from working in TV and film is that… we get to present it in front of an audience at a preview,” Mizer tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Composers panel group discussion with fellow Emmy nominees Brian Tyler (“1883”), Siddhartha Khosla (“Only Murders in the Building”), Christopher Willis (“Schmigadoon!“) and Theodore Shapiro...

The creators of the music, design and choreography for Apple TV+’s musical series Schmigadoon! drew on classic stage and screen musicals.
Co-creator Cinco Paul, production designer Bo Welch, composer Christopher Willis and choreographer Christopher Gatelli each shared their musical influences on a panel for the Apple TV+ series at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees awards-season event.
Contenders TV: The Nominees — Deadline’s Complete Coverage
Paul said he first conceived of Schmigadoon! 25 years ago, but it took the streaming content era to find it a home on Apple. He had the idea of a modern couple finding a town like Brigadoon that was always a musical, so he could satirize the musicals he loved.
“It’s kind of like you feel about your parents,” Paul said. “You love them so much but occasionally they say things that make you cringe. A lot of love towards these musicals but we...

Long-awaited animated feature “Lamya’s Poem” has unveiled its first trailer.
Alex Kronemer’s Rumi-inspired film about a Syrian refugee girl named Lamya was one of the hot competition titles at the 2021 Annecy Film Festival, and went on to play at festivals in Vancouver, Zurich and Prague.
The film is an inspiring and timely tale about a 12-year-old Syrian refugee who flees the violence of her country, and looks to a gifted book of poetry by the famous 13th-century poet, Rumi, as a source of strength. As the perils of her journey mount, the book becomes a magical gateway where she meets Rumi when he was a boy and also a refugee fleeing the violence of his time. In a shared dreamworld, they battle the monsters that follow them from their real world situations, and Lamya must help young Rumi find his calling and write the poem that, 800 years later,...

When Lorne Michaels first heard the pitch for “Schmigadoon!,” the comedic love letter to the Golden Age musicals of the 1940s and 50s, he didn’t have to look far for his leading lady – he offered it to “Saturday Night Live” star Cecily Strong. Asked why, Michaels simply states: “I didn’t think of anyone else.”
Having seen the show, the first season of which premiered last year on Apple TV Plus, it’s obvious why Strong was the right match for Melissa Gimble, a New York City doctor who finds herself and boyfriend Josh Skinner (Keegan-Michael Key) trapped in a mystical land, only able to leave when they find true love. But, Michaels elaborates, “I knew she would get the ways in which it’s moving and complex but also understand that cartoon reality. And I knew she would make us care about this relationship.”

Before Netflix launched a gaming platform, they experimented with interactive specials such as “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” and “The Boss Baby: Get That Baby!” But its new interactive gaming special, “Cat Burglar,” offers a new wrinkle: a nostalgic Tex Avery–inspired cartoon complete with a full orchestra, which plays like an extended Looney Tunes short.
“It’s about an hour and a half, which we treated as basically a feature-length Tex Avery cartoon,” said director and co-creator Mike Hollingsworth, a producer on “BoJack Horseman.” The result is just like what you’d find in a “Tom and Jerry” or a Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoon. It follows a cat named Rowdy (James Adomian), who tries to steal a priceless piece of art from a museum while attempting to evade a security guard dog named Peanut (Alan Lee).

I freely admit to having been indifferent to the idea of a new version of the David Copperfield story. Yes, the Charles Dickens novel is a classic, and rightly so, but were we clamoring for another take? The answer is no. However, the fact that filmmaker Armando Iannucci was going to be co-writing and directing it gave me hope. Perhaps his signature style would showcase a whole other side to it that I wasn’t expecting? Well, The Personal History of David Copperfield is definitely a new spin on the story, one that’s enjoyable, funny, and well made, but it also seems to have robbed Iannucci of his trademark edge. Coming out this week, it’s a good literary adaptation and period piece, but not quite the ribald Iannucci work we’ve come to know and love. The film is a new interpretation of the Charles Dickens story David Copperfield.

The film charts the story of a 12-year-old Syrian refugee who is given a book of poetry of classic 13th-century Persian poet, Rumi. As the perils of her journey mount, the book becomes a magical gateway.
“The wound is the place where the light enters you,” is one of Rumi’s famous quotes, which inspired the film’s writer-director Alexander Kronemer.
WestEnd will be introducing the feature to buyers this week during Annecy, where it is part of the digital event’s works in progress panels, and next week during the Cannes virtual market where they will show first visuals. ICM is repping North American rights.
Massoud will voice the young poet Rumi, Davis will voice Lamya and Tahir will be Rumi’s father.

Seeing that director Noah Baumbach enlisted Randy Newman to write the score for his Netflix film “Marriage Story,” you might think he was casting against type, if your knowledge of Newman’s movie work doesn’t extend back to a time before Pixar. If you left off with the legendary singer-songwriter’s composing work some time in the early ’80s, though, this is what you’d consider typecasting: Newman coming in to do something deeply bittersweet for serious drama, avoiding any of the trends of modern composing for something a little closer in classicism to what his uncle Alfred might’ve done in the ’50s or ’60s.
“I’ve certainly been typecast as doing animation, and I do it all right. The last two ‘Toy Story’ films had some big emotional content at the end of the picture. But it’s not like ‘Ragtime’ or ‘Avalon,’ ” he says, bringing up...

While Armando Iannucci‘s “Veep” failed to turn any of its nominations in to wins at this year’s Emmys, the writer/director is all but certain to get some love from the BAFTAs and Oscars for his new film “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” Iannucci’s lovingly crafted adaptation of his favorite of Charles Dickens‘ novels opened the BFI London Film Festival and was very well-received.
The cast is refreshingly diverse for a period piece. This color blind casting makes the film feel very modern. Today’s audiences will recognise and relate to these Victorian era characters. In the titular role, Dev Patel stands out even among a collection of more colorful characters. Hugh Laurie, Gwendoline Christie, Daisy May Cooper, Tilda Swinton, Ben Whishaw, Benedict Wong, Paul Whitehouse and the (ex) Doctor himself Peter Capaldi all have standout moments in the film with Christie being my personal favorite...

Fox Searchlight Pictures has acquired the North American rights to “The Personal History of David Copperfield,” the next film from “Veep” creator Armando Iannucci, the studio announced on Thursday.
The project is a reimagined take on Charles Dickens’ novel starring Dev Patel as the title character. Fox Searchlight is planning a 2020 theatrical release for the film after it makes its premiere on Sept. 5 at the Toronto International Film Festival and later at the BFI London Film Festival on Oct. 2.
“The Personal History of David Copperfield” is the story of a man whose rogue spirit carries him through a colorful life of poverty and opulence. The film follows David, a burgeoning young writer, from orphaned infancy to adulthood as he befriends a collection of eccentric characters on a journey of love, acceptance and self-discovery in Victorian England. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” has been named the best animated feature of 2018 at the 46th Annual Annie Awards, sweeping all seven categories in which it was nominated and giving the film a prize that has predicted the Oscar animated-feature winner more than 70 percent of the time.
The awards were handed out at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus on Saturday night by the Los Angeles branch of the International Animated Film Association, Asifa-Hollywood.
In addition to winning Best Animated Feature, “Spider-Man” picked up awards for its directing, writing, character animation, character design, production design and editorial. “Incredibles 2” came into the show with the most nominations, 11, but only won two, while “Ralph Breaks the Internet” had 10 nominations and received one award.

“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” topped Saturday’s Annie Awards, taking home seven zoetropes — one for each of its webslinger incarnations — including best animated feature. The Sony Pictures Animation film, which won in every category in which it was nominated, swung past Aardman Animations’ “Early Man,” Pixar’s “Incredibles 2,” Fox Searchlight Pictures’ “Isle of Dogs” and Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” for that honor.
In addition to animated feature, “Spider-Verse” picked up trophies for direction; writing (Phil Lord and Rothman); character animation in an animated feature (David Han); character design (Shiyoon Kim); production design (Justin K. Thompson) and editorial.
Mamoru Hosoda’s “Mirai” was named best animated independent feature.
How the “Spider-Verse” Annie wins will affect its chances on Oscar night is unclear. The Academy changed its nominating procedures this year for the animated feature category, opening it up to any Academy member willing to join the nominating committee.

For many years, Oscar “shortlists” narrowed down the choices in a preliminary round that would eventually lead to the five nominees for original song and score. Academy executives discontinued that practice after the 1979 awards, but have brought it back for the 2018 honors.
It was problematic then and it remains so now. Not everyone agrees that the shortlist concept is a good idea, primarily because it forces music-branch members to see and evaluate dozens of films before the first round of voting in early December. Previously, they had until early January to wade through all those “for your consideration” screeners and CDs.
In May, Academy executives insisted that the shortlist “gives smaller or lesser-known films a better chance to be nominated.” Speculation at the time focused on music from films released in the first half of the year, which have often been ignored in favor of end-of-year releases, generally deemed more “important.

“Veep” “only afforded us these tiny little slices of music,” so composer Christopher Willis had “a great feeling of release” when re-teaming with Armando Iannucci on “The Death of Stalin.” “We realized that we were going to be needing these great slabs of music to take us through some complicated scenes,” he explains. “So it was very much a feeling of opening up,” of finally being able to “try some stuff out.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Willis above.

The mood got decidedly funnier and edgier in this year’s Emmy race for Original Music and Lyrics. It was a badly needed tonic for the country. Most notably, Tina Fey joined the musical fray for the first time, looking for her 10th Emmy with the hilarious “Hell No,” a tribute to Beyonce’s “Lemonade” (featuring an enraged Tituss Burgess) from “Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt.”
But, given the current zeitgeist, it’s not surprising that Chance the Rapper was nominated for his Run-d.M.C.–inspired rap tribute to Obama, “Last Christmas,” from “Saturday Night Live,” or that Rachel Bloom was back again with the raunchy “We Tapped That Ass” from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” There was even room for the excruciatingly uncomfortable “The Ballad of Claus Jorstad (Devil Stool)” from “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and and the animated burlesque of “Jing-a-Ling-a-Ling” from “Duck the Halls: A Mickey Mouse Christmas Special.”

To celebrate his birthday over the weekend, Hardwell decided to offer up a brand new track titled “Party Till The Daylight.” His latest single is Hardwell like you’ve never heard him before, as the Revealed Recordings head honcho eschews his usual big room material for a scorching bass house cut.
The new tune sets the pace straight from the get go with a pounding four on the floor beat accompanied by a sample from Global Deejays & Chris Willis’ “Party 2 Daylight.” After a head spinning buildup, the track explodes into the drop, complete with gritty bass, wobbly synths and a groove that just won’t quit.
On his latest effort, Hardwell ventures into unfamiliar territory and delivers a solid track along the way. With an uncharacteristically ‘bassy’ sound and heaps of energy, “Party Till The Daylight” ranks as a memorable outing for the producer, as well as a strong first release of 2017.

David Guetta and Cedric Gervais have teamed up on a new single titled “Would I Lie To You,” enlisting the help of singer Chris Willis to handle the vocal duties. Guetta is no stranger to topping the charts with his dance tunes with previous hits like “Sexy Bitch” and “I Got A Feeling,” and his latest collaboration is primed to take over the airwaves with its infectious groove.
“Would I Lie To You” features an upbeat, funk influenced production complete with swanky rhythm guitars, slapped basslines and driving disco drums. Before long, Chris Willis’ soulful vocals join in, bringing an intrinsically catchy appeal to the new song that will have you singing along before it’s over. Some great Daft Punk-esque vocoders surface in the production as well, rounding out its tight sound with some added interest.

Disney’s “The Lion Guard: Return of The Roar” is putting just as heavy an emphasis on music as its predecessor, the 1994 animated smash hit “The Lion King.” In an exclusive behind the scenes video obtained by TheWrap, composer Christopher Willis details how he spent several months researching music native to the African Savanna, including traditional instruments and techniques that helped him create the score for “The Lion Guard.” Along with singer-songwriter Beau Black and executive producer Ford Riley, they have created original music pieces that remain authentic to “The Lion King,” but with a new spin and identifiable sounds for.

Nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced and "Frozen" and "Monsters University" led the pack with 10 nominations each. "Despicable Me 2" and "The Croods" followed closely with 9 noms each.
I am rooting for "Frozen" to win! It's a return to form to what Disney does best -- affecting fairy tale with memorable musical numbers. "Monsters University," on the other hand, was bland. The film bored me on second viewing.
Steven Spielberg will receive the Winsor McCay Award for career achievement at the awards ceremony happening on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Patrick Warburton will serve as host.

Thor: The Dark World has reportedly lost its composer.
Carter Burwell (True Grit, Fargo, Where the Wild Things Are) is rumoured to have departed the sequel, according to a reliable user on Film Score Monthly.
Ford A Thaxton also claimed that Marvel Studios is not happy with director Alan Taylor.
In addition, Burwell has removed Thor: The Dark World from the list of projects on his website.
"Fyi, I checked with a really well informed source and it was confirmed," wrote Thaxton. "Carter is off the film.
"It also appears so is the director who seems to have been asked to take a long vacation until after the film opens. I've head one replacement name being mentioned which would be a very interesting replacement and is a very talented composer as well. We'll see if he gets the gig."
