Every hit song begins with a writer or group of writers sitting in a room staring at a keyboard, holding a guitar, staring at a blank computer screen or a pad of paper. The story of how a song comes together, much less becomes an enduring hit heard by millions, always seems like some kind of magical miracle. Earlier this week, the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles held its annual Songwriters in the Round evening in conjunction with the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Top songwriters told the stories behind some of the biggest hits. This week’s writers included Dan Wilson (Semisonic,...

By now, everyone and their mother knows that Taylor Swift is dating a Kennedy (Conor, 18, son of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.), and that the leggy country crooner all but party-bombed a Kennedy wedding last week ("I personally went up to Ms. Swift…and asked her nicely as I could to leave," the bride's mother said).
But the top-earning entertainer under 30 is not stopping there. She's already bought that $4.9 million vacation home near the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port, Mass., which she alludes to in a new interview in Rolling Stone. "That would be so amazing," Swift gushed to the publication.
Other things the 22-year-old gushed about? Her love for R&B hip-hop ("I love Wiz Khalifa" -- how quirky!) and collaborating with industry pros Max Martin and Dan Wilson for her fourth album, "Red" (out October 22). She also expounded on love, just generally. "Trying to chronicle each step of the way was challenging,...

Adele has admitted that she was compelled to write a song from her new album by shame. The singer penned 'Don't You Remember' with Semisonic frontman Dan Wilson after realising that she had portrayed her ex-boyfriend as a "complete t**t" on many other tracks from her 21 LP. "It kind of got to the point where I'd managed to step out of the bitter mode that I was in when I was writing the record," she recalled. "I was analysing all my songs and... I suddenly got really ashamed and disgusted with the manner that I was portraying someone who was really important to me. "I kind of felt really childish that I'd made him out to be a complete t**t in all the songs." Inspired to redress (more)...

Last week we gave a preview of Adele’s new album, now we can give you more details. “21” will come out Feb. 22. The name reflects that age the now 22-year old Adele was when she wrote the bulk of the album. Fans of the two-time Grammy winner will recall that her Sony debut was titled “19.” We’re sensing a theme. Adele recorded the new set in Malibu and London, working with producers and songwriters Rick Rubin, Paul Epworth, Ryan Tedder Dan Wilson and Fraser T. Smith. As we reported here, first single, “Rolling in the Deep,” was influenced by Adele’s...

Grammy Award winner Adele is back with her sophomore album, "21." The follow-up to the acclaimed "19," "21" marks London native's return to the music scene after nearly three years.
Like "19," "21" is named after Adele's age at the time the songs were written. The now 22-year-old is getting ready to release her next set on Tuesday, February 22nd. The album will be led by first single "Rolling in the Deep."
The album features production from Ryan Tedder (Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson), Rick Rubin (Weezer, Shakira), Paul Epworth (Florence and the Machine, Plan B), Dan Wilson (Dixie Chicks), and Fraser T. Smith (Taio Cruz). She also re-teamed with producers Jim Abbiss and Francis "Eg" White, who co-wrote her hit "Chasing Pavements."
"I discovered lots of artists I'd never heard of, particularly Wanda Jackson, Allison Krauss, Yvonne Fair, Andrew Bird, Neko Case, Lady Antebellum and Steel Drivers who I fell in love with," said Adele about...

There's no secret that the last season of "The Celebrity Apprentice" — which saw Bret Michaels score the victory over a truly excellent field — was one of the most fun shows on television. And it's also no secret that the current iteration of "The Apprentice" (which does not feature any famous people, just a bunch of down-on-their-luck business folk) is not very good at all (ratings have been roundly bad). But according to reports from Entertainment Weekly, a new season of "The Celebrity Apprentice" is just around the corner, and rumor has it that the cast will include La Toya Jackson, former "The View" co-host Star Jones and "Don't Forget the Lyrics" host Mark McGrath.
Even though there could be as many as nine more names added to the roster, fans should already be salivating, as all three of those people are wildly entertaining on TV. McGrath is an especially awesome case,...

A Conversation with Dan Wilson Mike Ragogna: Let's start by talking about your new album Live At The Pantages. Dan Wilson: Cool. Mr: When was it recorded? Dw: It was recorded last Winter, and it was a show in Minneapolis. I had been touring after my solo album Free Life came out. I had been touring for about two years and I did about half of my shows solo, busker style--just with an acoustic guitar--and I did about half my shows with a full band, which was a crew of my friends from Minneapolis. Occasionally, I'd also get a chance to play with Brad Gordon, who is a multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles. So, when we scheduled this big gig in Minneapolis to sort of rap up all the touring and put an exclamation mark on that period of time which had been so important...

Last week, Justin Bieber officially announced that the newest single from My World 2.0 would be "U Smile," a smooth track with a retro Motown vibe. It's a sweet, straightforward song about devotion to his lady love, and it contains the line "When you smile, I smile" in the chorus. Like most of the other songs he has released to radio, "U Smile" is already gaining airplay and should make its way up the Billboard Hot 100 immanently.
"U Smile" will put Bieber on another list: People with songs about smiles. It's amazing that so many great artists have written songs about such a simple muscle twitch, but then again a smile can be enigmatic and disarming. Check out the top tracks devoted to grins of all kings.
Semisonic, "Secret Smile"
Semisonic had a tough time breaking the second single from their sophomore album Feeling Strangely Fine after the huge success of "Closing Time.

The term "One-Hit Wonder" can often be tossed around derisively, used to dismiss artists who make it big with a single song but can't keep up their momentum for a second. Sometimes those groups are actual one-trick ponies, but sometimes the chemistry of pop stardom is so complicated that no matter how hard the band tries or how good they are, lightning just refuses to strike twice. Such was the case with Semisonic, who released their breakthrough album Feeling Strangely Fine on this day in 1998.
Back in '98, the Minneapolis trio was riding high on the success of their massive hit "Closing Time," a lovely little piano-inflected rock song about the wee hours of the morning (though frontman and songwriter Dan Wilson admitted that the track was actually written from the perspective of his baby inside the womb) that ruled the Billboard Modern Rock chart for the majority of the spring.

As the old adage goes, good things come in small packages, so here at Dread Central we're always on the lookout for standout short films that deliver the goods, and this weekend we found one: Elftwin Films' "Horror of Our Love", a romantic horror comedy that twists the normal love story back until it breaks!
Producer/director/actor Dave Reda (Bit Parts, review here) sent over a copy of "Hool" for us to see, and while he wants to keep most of the details under wraps for a bit while he submits the combination short film/music video to most of the major genre film fests, he did provide us with a still along with a couple of behind-the-scenes photos. For more, including a video of outtakes, be sure to befriend Dave Reda on Facebook, and hit up the Elftwin Films website, too, while you're at it.

The Dear John soundtrack. Imagine, if you will, that musical quality is a beachside stretch of highway, bathed in California sun, with a big white line straight down the middle. One side of the road is the side of good tunes, and the other is the side of gloopy monotonous bilge. The Dear John soundtrack swerves from one side to the other and back like an outtake from Death Proof.
Dear John is adapted from a novel by the author of The Notebook and directed by Lasse Hallstrom, whose previous work includes Chocolat and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (his earlier Danish film My Life As A Dog is probably his best work), and it’s an old fashioned weepy romance from the Mills-and-Boon-with-pretentions end of the scale, so it’s no surprise that the soundtrack consists of ten sentimental love songs. What is surprising is just how alternately terrible/quite good the songs are.
