Shudder survival thriller Quicksand builds an entire premise around its namesake, leaving a bickering, estranged married couple trapped in a pit of despair. Director Andrés Beltrán and writer Matt Pitts approach the B-movie concept with a seriousness that nearly works for their efficient thriller, placing relevance on the emotional stakes for its leads over jungle thrills. It leaves the thrills underplotted in Quicksand, however.
An opening sequence introduces the unforgiving terrain; a pair of poachers prowl a dangerous area of the Colombian jungle called Las Arenas to hunt and retrieve valuable skin from a venomous snake. Cut to couple Josh (Allan Hawco) and his wife Sofia (Carolina Gaitán) as they head to a medical conference in Bogotá; but the car ride there is rife with friction despite Josh’s best efforts to diffuse the tension. The estranged couple is gearing up for divorce, making this business trip even more uncomfortable.

Hold The Fort, Coming Soon to Kickstarter, Casts Julian Smith: "Lucas and Jenny are getting settled in their new home when Jerry Klein, the Hoa president, knocks on their door. He invites them to the neighborhood's annual “Equinox Party.” Ready to embrace suburban life, Lucas excitedly accepts.
But this is no ordinary party...A banner hangs at the clubhouse's entrance: Welcome to the Equinox. Please don't die. There are talks of a portal to hell, dangerous mythical creatures, copious amounts of Moonshine, and a legendary gun wielding hero, McScruffy.
Lucas, thinking this is all a joke, hesitantly mingles with the other party guests when the inevitable happens.
The portal to hell opens...
And the first monsters attack."
Veteran YouTuber Julian Smith will star in the film, which is aiming for a September production start date. Hold The Fort is a Horror Comedy from award winning writer/director William Bagley...

Remember quicksand? Movies back in the day probably made you terrified of being sucked down into a patch while walking in the woods, but there’s a good chance you never actually ended up encountering any quicksand in real life. That’s a good thing, of course. But the characters in the upcoming survival thriller Quicksand, you may have guessed, aren’t so lucky.
Deadline reports that Shudder has acquired Quicksand, the premiere set for June 23.

This Westworld review contains spoilers.
Westworld Season 4 Episode 2
One of the biggest strengths of the first season of Westworld was its massive ensemble cast. Some of them were known performers taking on new characters, with established actors like Ed Harris as the mysterious Man in Black and Anthony Hopkins adding a little class to the story of a very adult theme park full of robots just waiting to go kill-crazy. However, the performers who weren’t as well-known stood out because they all had very distinctive looks, and few characters in Westworld stood out quite like Angela Sarafyan. With her striking, wide-set hazel eyes, Sarafyan’s Clementine Pennyfeather was undoubtedly a favorite of guests of the park, if only because of her kind heart and assigned profession. The “hooker with a heart of gold” trope brought to life.
Clementine always had a dreamy sort of innocence, if only because she...

And we’re back — not literally back in Westworld, mind you, despite Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) stopping by his former home on the way to Delos headquarters. No, the most notable return in an episode filled with returns is that of the tried and untrue “Westworld” house style. Revolution, Season 2, Episode 14: “Fear and Loathing”
Written by Anne Cofell Saunders and Matt Pitts
Directed by Liz Friedlander
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on NBC
Can we all just take a moment to consider New Vegas as the absolute finest location in Revolution? The meta pop culture jokes are fantastic. The tiny little seeds of David Schwimmer reduced to performing as a cabaret act or Justin Timberlake squaring off against Joey Fatone in a deathmatch are exactly what the show needs more of to really establish its place in a greater context and carve out some glorious black humour at the same time.
New Vegas is also the heart of the action this week as Monroe, Connor, and Charlie take centre stage. Our weekly gripes about characters in captivity aside, Monroe was never dying here, given the Chekhov’s gun of Monroe trying to track him down, and nor...

Revolution, Season 2, Episode 7: “The Patriot Act”
Written by Anne Coffell Saunders & Matt Pitts
Directed by Omar Madha Airs Wednesdays at 8 pm (Et) on NBC
Revolution has never met a plot point it couldn’t wait to plunge into. After bubbling under the surface for a couple of episodes, Aaron’s pyrokinesis (or rather, his seemingly telepathic connection with the nanobots) is the prime focus. Gene, who we learned last week has been working with the Patriots, is outed to his family as a traitor. Both of these narrative turns could have spooled out over six to seven episodes before making a real impact. Instead, the show rushes right into them.
This week, the Patriots are unsurprisingly keen to get their hands on Aaron and his new powers and our heroes rush to get Mr. Pittman and Cynthia out of Willoughby, where they will be met by Monroe (who, surprise!

“What’s a boyband?” — Jason
Every now and then, Revolution offers a reminder that this is a world unfamiliar to us. Miles, Rachel, and Aaron may know our existence in 2013, but the world has changed immeasurably.
This is the future, one where tiny robots with devastating power permeate the air. Yet for all the science-fiction elements, the plot is still very much driven by the oldest of dramatic tensions, that within and between families.
The inter- and intra-family dynamics are the most pronounced they’ve been to date. Save for a brief firefight and a brief sojourn to Monroe HQ, we spend our time here with various combinations of the Mathesons and Nevilles.

Revolution, Season 1, Episode 10: “Nobody’s Fault but Mine”

Midseason finales are always tricky for a show to pull off. If there’s too much of a reveal, audiences may not be motivated to return when the show makes its comeback, but if the season’s buildup to date doesn’t yield some kind of payoff, audiences may also choose to leave out of frustration. These problems are magnified for rookie shows like Revolution, as well as shows that go for extended midseason breaks, as this show will be back on the air 4 months into the new year. Thus, there was a lot of pressure on the tenth episode to ensure viewers would stay engaged, without giving them too much. Fortunately, the writers delivered, with a thrilling episode that took on...

Revolution, Season 1, Episode 7: “The Children’s Crusade”
Written by Charles Beeson
Directed by Matt Pitts
Airs Mondays at 10 pm (Et) on NBC
An oddly subdued episode, “The Children’s Crusade” feels like a placeholder episode despite some big revelations and moments. The flash-forward sequence in the teaser seems out of place, yet there are few other complaints about a solid episode.
It provides with an intriguing look at a band of hardy kids who live together without an adult. When one is captured by the Militia to be brainwashed and conscripted into a soldier, Charlie leads the charge in bringing him back in the reasonably entertaining lead story.
While it’s a spin on the bad-guy-of-the-week trope, Charlie being branded is a bold move, and should provide greater tension in the weeks ahead. The troubles that clearly lie ahead because of this is neatly foreshadowed when the kids check...

Director: Charles Beeson. Writers: Eric Kripke and Matt Pitts. Executive Producers: Jon Favereau, and J.J. Abrams. Cast: James Alcorn, Nadej K Bailey, Griffin Freeman, Billy Burke, Tracy Spiridakos, Giancarlo Esposito, Zak Orth, David Lyons and Daniella Alonso. In "The Children's Crusade," Miles (Billy Burke) and his group are again distracted from their search for Danny (Graham Rogers). This time Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos) is caught up and sucked into a sob story involving several orphaned children. One in their group has been captured, Peter (Griffin Freeman), and his brother, Michael, wants him back. Rescuing Danny can pretty much be forgotten at this point. The next fourty minutes is spent in a swashbuckling episode that puts Charlie in a precarious position. This was an exciting episode despite the show's main plot moving forward ever so slowly. The children, "a hairless group of Ewoks" (Aaron), have been left alone by their parents for eight years now.

This week, on Fringe: Walter and Walternate finally talk, Lincoln didn’t like coffee that much anyways, and Fauxlivia misses rainbows
When Fringe introduced the Other Side, they broke new ground for genre fiction. Plenty of films and TV shows have toyed with the idea of alternate universes, but none have used the trope to do such in-depth character analysis or exploration of identity. Besides giving the cast fantastic opportunities to stretch themselves and demonstrate their range, the Other Side has given the series any number of intriguing storylines, not to mention doubling the character count without doubling the budget.

This week, on Fringe: Lincoln spends some quality time with himself, Foeyles is still a baddie, and shapeshifters are people too
After last week’s disappointing episode, Fringe is back in fine form this week, abandoning the wacky and more extreme elements in favor of a straightforward character study of the often overlooked Lincoln Lee. Granted, on Fringe “straightforward” is a trip to the Other Universe and a homeless shapeshifting vigilante, but the majority of the episode is spent with Agent Lee getting to know Fauxlivia and Linclone and evaluating himself and how he’s come to this point in his life.
If there’s a disappointing element to this episode, it’s how much it, and by extension Lincoln,...

This week, on Fringe: Lincoln isn’t sleeping, Olivia has migraines, Peter’s having trouble adjusting, and Eugene just wants to be seen
After last week’s excellent episode, “Wallflower” has a lot to live up to, and, frankly, a dip in quality is almost to be expected. Even with that in mind, this week’s episode of Fringe fails to impress, ruining a promising setup and interesting cliffhanger by committing one of the cardinal film and television sins in its third act- plot-necessitated stupidity. There’s nothing wrong with a character being stupid or making foolhardy mistakes, but when a character makes an out of character, stupid decision for no legitimate reason other than that the plot demands it, any attachment to the character or moment goes out the window.

We were never meant to know exactly what other people are thinking. It's a given fact that our own egos, not to mention our hearts, are saved a great deal of grief by not being able to peer into the mind of the person sitting across from us at the dinner table, or the girl at the coffee shop, or the estranged lover whose mixed signals you're desperately trying to parse. Sometimes, it's better not to know what secrets lurk inside that mind, what true thoughts they're concealing from you, and perhaps just what feelings they're struggling with. For Olivia, the opportunity to peek into Peter Bishop's mind would be a gift, to be able to separate the feelings that he claims to have for Olivia from the experiences he shared with Fauxlivia. To be able to know, in no uncertain terms, just which version of herself he cares for:...

I haven't written about 'Fringe' this season, largely because it's one of those shows that I tend to sit back and just watch.
But hot damn was last night's episode good, continuing a trend of excellent episodes since the start of this season.
One of the problems with these Monster-of-the-week episodes is that the monster/bad guy themselves aren't really that interesting. Too often, they're played as stock villains, who have no real motive other than to be evil. So kudos to writers David Wilcox and Matthew Pitts for creating a villain with a real conflict, and kudos to Marcus Giamatti for playing it so well. I really felt for the poor guy as he realised that in order to complete his mission, he'd have to abandon his life as a civilian with a family.
And Anna Torv continues to shine as Fauxlivia - a character who, like Ray Duffy,...

Story: Upon returning "over here," we see that Walter (John Noble) has just started getting used to his new role as the sole shareholder of Massive Dynamic, the science institution founded by the late William Bell (Leonard Nimoy). But he and his Fringe colleagues are distracted when an assassinated senator is revealed to have been a shape-shifting sleeper agent from the alternate reality.
The revelation of the senator's identity portends a bad outcome for Bolivia (Anna Torv), who has just started getting comfortable in this strange new world.
Dream Analysis: The latest episode of "Fringe" marks four fantastic installments in a row, instantly establishing season three as having the strongest opening act of any other previous year in the science fiction series. "Fringe" has reinvented itself by drastically altering just one ingredient in the show's successful format — namely,...

0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Occasionally, the La Times will publish a well-written, erudite piece on a subject of significant weight and importance in the media. Most of the time, those articles, however captivating they might be, will not begin with a reference to zombies. Turns out, they're even more interesting when there are zombies involved.
The publication opens its latest story on the relationship between screenwriters and the 3D trend with this fascinating ditty:
When Matt Pitts, a writer on "Fringe" and a former assistant to J.J. Abrams, recently began shopping his first film script to movie studios, he knew he had a marketable idea on his hands. The title of his screenplay, after all, was "Spring Break Zombie Cruise" and its storyline followed, well, just that. But the prospect of flesh-eating creatures stalking beautiful young bodies wasn't his script's main hook. The element to catch a studio mogul's eye?...

Bloody Disgusting learned that Fringe writer Matt Pitts is packing up for a vacation into the horror genre with Spring Break Zombie Cruise, a new 3-D feature. Here's the logline: "A virus from a top secret government island has accidentally infected a spring break cruise ship in the middle of the ocean. With most of the partying students turned into zombies, its up to a soldier and a group of co-eds to contain the virus before it reaches land and before they are eaten." Madhouse Entertainment is attached to the project. I swear, if they post-convert this movie I'. gonna scream.

In an article focusing on Hollywood's 3D craze, the L.A. Times reports that Matt Pitts has penned Spring Break Zombie Cruise , a new horror film aimed for, of course, 3D. Pitts credit includes one episode of Fringe . He's also J.J. Abrams assistant. Here's a log-line we've scored: A virus from a top secret government island has accidentally infected a spring break cruise ship in the middle of the ocean. With most of the partying students turned into zombies, it's up to a soldier and a group of co-eds to contain the virus before it reaches land . and before they are eaten. No word yet on what studio is going to land the script. We'll keep you posted.

Episode Title: "Olivia. In the Lab. With a Revolver."
Written By: Matthew Pitts
Story: A man dying of cancer is going around intentionally exposing specific victims to his disease — but cancer isn't supposed to be contagious, and it's certainly not supposed to kill an infected host mere minutes after exposure! Cue the Fringe team, as Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) begins to realize that this isn't just any man, but one of her former Cortexiphan classmates from Jacksonville.
But the sick man is just one pressing matter on Olivia's plate, as the tightly wound special agent debates whether or not to betray Walter (John Noble) by telling Peter (Joshua Jackson) the truth about his alternate reality origins.
Cancer Man & The Cortexiphan Kids: Cool name for a band, no? Mysteries of the week are always compelling when they have interplay with the overarching mythology of "Fringe," which was exactly the case in tonight's installment.
