As far as titles go, you can’t accuse Jeremy Elkin’s “All the Streets Are Silent: The Convergence of Hip-Hop and Skateboarding (1987-1997)” of false advertising. Tracing the two youth cultures as they dance around one another and finally intersect on the streets of New York City throughout the decade, the director gathers an astonishing amount of vintage footage, and finds no shortage of deep veins to tap. And yet, despite its doctoral dissertation-style title, “All the Streets Are Silent” lacks a thesis: less a sociological study of the rapper-skater convergence than a celebration of a very specific type of guy in a very specific fragment of space and time. In this case, the kind of young person who felt most at home roaming the streets of Dinkins-era Manhattan with only a board and a boombox for company.
And one might argue that that type of guy, now older,...

Synopsis: The streets of N.Y. might be temporarily silent, but in downtown Manhattan in the early 90’s, they were the site of a dynamic collision between two vibrant subcultures: skateboarding and hip hop. Jeremy Elkin’s documentary, All The Streets Are Silent, narrated by Eli Morgan Gesner, brings to life the magic of this time period and the convergence that created an urban style and visual language that would have an outsized and lasting cultural effect. If Paris Is Burning and Kids had a baby, you’d have this documentary love letter to New York—examining race, society, fashion and street culture—and full of archival footage featuring legendary characters and figures from the downtown scene. Featuring Rosario Dawson, Harold Hunter, Justin Pierce, Keith Hufnagel, Darryl McDaniels (Run-d.M.C.), Jefferson Pang, Bobbito Garcia, Stretch Armstrong, Kool Keith, Leo Fitzpatrick, Mike Hernandez, DJ Clark Kent, Kid Capri, Mike Carroll,...

Eli Morgan Gesner’s filthy body horror flick comes to Blu-ray. Eli Morgan Gesner seems to be channeling another Eli, Roth that is, in his debut feature Condemned. The film feels kind of like an urban riff on Roth’s breakthrough feature Cabin Fever in that the villain of the piece is a kind of hyper-contagious disease…

Grippingly frightening dedicated fans of the horror genre through physical and emotional scares can be a challenging task, as many viewers have become desensitized, and are unable to relate to characters who are contending with distressing situations. So creating enthralling and insightful horror movies and televisions series that captivatingly chronicle the problems of contemporary society in a purposeful way is certainly an even bigger challenge. But actress Lydia Hearst, who starred in last year’s horror prequel, ‘Cabin Fever: Patient Zero,’ has naturally created characters in two such compelling, thought-provoking horror movies this fall: one in first-time feature film writer and director Eli Morgan Gesner’s ‘Condemned,’ which opened this weekend in [ Read More ]

Condemned is so campily grotesque, that I’m surprised it doesn’t come donning Troma’s seal of approval. The effects suffer from a lack of budget, and the premise is absolutely asinine, but where Troma enjoys making art out of minimal production value, Eli Morgan Gesner can’t quite find the same wacky dynamic.

Hey there creeps! Remember when I gave ya the skinny on the new splatter gem Condemned — a flick containing more bodily fluids than a couch in the San Fernando Valley? Well, guess what? The flicks die-rector, Eli Morgan Gesner, just strolled on into the Crypt o’ Xiii for a lil’ chittin’ and chattin’!

Eli Morgan Gesner. The main idea was to make a New York City horror film. In my opinion, this is one of the most challenging ideas possible.
