Thirty years ago, watching a character visit a therapist on television was often played for laughs. At least, that’s how Yvette Lee Bowser, then-executive producer on “A Different World,” recalls it. In the real world, there was still a stigma around seeking such mental healthcare, especially within the African American community, she notes, so stories at the time introduced the idea to audiences slowly and in a “palatable” way.
Just five years later, when Bowser was working on “Living Single,” she was able to revisit the therapy discussion with a slightly different tone because “society, as well as our writing staff, was in a place where we wanted to help normalize it.”
Now, since talk therapy is a part of many individuals’ health journeys, it is being showcased as such on a number of new scripted series, from Starz’s “Run the World,” which Bowser executive produces, to Showtime...

Therapy can be exhausting. Having any kind of emotional conversation can be exhausting. These days, being so out of practice, any conversation at all can be exhausting — even when you’re just listening.
The original seasons of HBO’s “In Treatment” turn talk therapy into profound theater. Dr. Paul Weston (played by Gabriel Byrne) meets with patients, and the audience at home gets to watch each session. The show’s brilliant design allows viewers to do what Paul can’t: pick and choose which patients to follow — including Paul himself, who holds weekly sessions with a therapist of his own. It can feel like you’re working alongside the doctor, until the end of the week, when you have see him in a new light. HBO originally aired episodes every weeknight, with each day of the week devoted to the same patient, before shifting to block releases on Sundays and Mondays.

“What happens when you lose track of your pain,” Uzo Aduba asks. When you shove your most painful feelings down and suppress them? How will that come back to bite you? And who will you be?
This is the idea that hooked her into her latest role as Dr. Brooke Taylor—a therapist in the grip of bereavement, with her own hidden pain—in HBO’s new incarnation of the hit show In Treatment. The original 2008-2010 series, created by Rodrigo García, had Gabriel Byrne in the chair as Dr. Paul Weston, and gathered multiple awards and massive critical acclaim. Now, after a decade-long hiatus, executive producers Joshua Allen (Empire) and Jennifer Schuur have brought it back with Aduba in the driving seat.

The new season of “In Treatment” premiering on HBO this May comes more than a decade after the show was last on the air and boasts an entirely new star and creative team. Regardless, the show is being billed as a fourth season, rather than a complete reboot of what came before.
“We are not trying leave our predecessor in the dust,” executive producer Jennifer Schuur said during a Television Critics Association panel for the show on Wednesday. “We are grateful to them; we admire that show in myriad ways. We feel like there was no way to go forward starting over from scratch. We needed to have this be Season 4.”
“In Treatment” first debuted on HBO in 2008. The series ran for three seasons with Gabriel Byrne starring as Dr. Paul Weston, the therapist at the center of the show. The new season stars “Orange Is the New Black” alum Uzo Aduba as Dr.

The season 15 finale of “So You Think You Can Dance” was full of encore performances of some of the season’s most memorable routines. It was an especially good night for hip-hop choreographer Luther Brown, whose dances were featured especially prominently as examples of the season’s best. One performance was so catchy that two judges couldn’t help themselves: Twitch and Nigel Lythgoe got in on the action too. Watch them above.
This routine was set to “Juice” by Yo Gotti, and it was originally performed by the top four male contestants: Cole Mills, Jay Jay Dixonbey, Darius Hickman and Slavik Pustovoytov. It was especially memorable for its flashy costumes: all four in suits topped off with canary yellow trench coats and fedoras reminiscent of “Dick Tracy.” They all returned for this special reprise, and Twitch joined them midway through.

"So You Think You Can Dance" has shrunk the number of contestants to four as there is only a week left before the winner of season 8 is crowned. On Thursday, August 4, it was revealed that Melanie, Sasha, Marko and Tadd are going to compete on the finale. Meanwhile, Ricky and Caitlynn have to bury their hope to take home the top prize when they were eliminated that night.
In between the result announcements, "American Idol" alum Pia Toscano took the stage to perform her new single "This Time". Bad Boys of Dance and Rock the Ballet additionally catered the audience with a dance number.
Next week, the four finalists will be competing for the champion title. They will be joined by returning contestants Mark Kanemura, Robert Roldan, Lauren Froderman (season 7 winner), and Joshua Allen (season 4 winner).

This has been a really surprising and refreshing season. Too bad I’m talking about the guest judges rather than the dancers. Last night, Christina Applegate offered up a nice mix of compliments, criticism, and technical know-how. As it were, her diligent research and thoughtful comments were pretty lost on a boring, unremarkable night. Other than Melanie’s solo and Sasha’s contemporary with Kent, the stand-outs were few and few between. Was this the lamest Top 6 ever? Or were you pleased with how the dancers performed? Do you think last night’s snoozefest will be redeemed tonight with some unexpected D4YL performances?...

After last night’s dance-packed episode of So You Think You Can Dance, one can understand why host Cat Deeley would want to kick back in her dressing room in a pair of cut-off jeans and her bare feet — especially after getting a look at the pair of four-inch heels she had to wear for the two-hour episode. In an exclusive backstage interview, Deeley also explained how Season 4 Sytycd winner Joshua Allen caused her a “war wound”; demonstrated her unnerving Mary Murphy impression; and expounded on why she thinks fellow best Reality TV Host nominee Ryan Seacrest deserves to win...

Ok, so it’s not going to win any awards, but this film was a lot of fun – and I’d definitely see it again!
So here’s the skinny on Step Up 3-D: masterpiece theatre it’s not, but it definitely brings drama, romance and comedy to the table. After hitting the film’s La premiere August 2, I can tell you that it’s definitely a fun film-going experience!
Curly-haired hip-hop kid Moose (Adam G. Sevani)- who was also featured in the series’ second film – is back as a freshman at Nyu with his Bff, Camille (Camp Rock’s Alyson Stoner). He’s recruited by a tight-knit group of NYC street dancers called the Pirates including Luke (the gorgeous Rick Malambri) and Natalie (Sharni Vinson); the team goes on to battle some of the best hip-hop dancers in the world. "So You Think You Can Dance" has had its first sidelining injury of the season, but at least it's not a competitor.
All-star Allison Holker, who's consistently wowed the audience and overshadowed her partner this season, is out for the week due to an injury.
"Hey guys I have to sit this week out of #sytycd I hurt my ribs but I'm gonna rest and heal and I'll be back by next week!!" she tweets. She recently paired with Kent Boyd for a jazz routine choreographed by Mandy Moore.
Although she'll be missed, at least another fan favorite, Season 4's Katee Shean will return, most like to sub in for Holker.
Judge Nigel Lythgoe tweets, "the rumour is true that Katie Shean is on this week's #Sytycd. Happy 234th birthday America. Do I have to leave the Country tomorrow?"
And then adds, " Doh!! Sorry Katee Shean will be on #Sytycd along with Nyjel Lithgo.

Now you can! Your favorite dancers from So You Think You Can Dance and Dwts share their workout and diet tips with You.
It’s no secret the holiday season wreaks havoc on all of our diets! We’re sick of this vicious cycle, so we asked some of the fittest people we know – the dancers from our fave reality shows – how they keep their fabulously toned bodies during the overindulgent holiday season.
We weren’t surprised when pretty much everyone had one answer in common: Dancing, of course!
“Dancing is a great workout and you don’t even realize it while you’re doing it,” raved Dwts‘ ballroom dancer Anna Trebunskaya.
Her hubby, fellow Dwts hoofer Jonathan Roberts, agreed. “Try ballroom! It’s a great way to stay fit and have fun!”

While everyone else was interested in the off-stage drama of the un-fianced Maksim and Karina from Dancing with The Stars, the only thing about the Emmy dance routine we cared about was the plethora of So You Think You Can Dance alumni. Backing the Dancing with the Stars (ex)couple were Season 4 alumni Mark Kanemura, Katee Shean, Joshua Allen, Season 3 (and Abdc's) Hok Konishi and Dominic Sandoval, as well as Season 1 and fellow Quest Crew member Ryan Conferido. The routine was even choreographed by So You Think You Can Dance choreographers and occasional guest judges, Tabitha and Napoleon.
And fear not, if you happened to miss the sizzling routine, we've got the video for you.

[brightcoveplayer 30570507001]The long wait over! The world finally got to see much-buzzed-about [1] Katie Holmes bare all, singing and dancing for charity on Sytycd’s 100th episode on Thursday. Holmes, looking absolutely stunning, went from majestic city streets to stage as she performed her rendition of Judy Garland’s song "Get Happy" from the 1950s musical Summer Stock. People was backstage after the show to get the reactions. “Katie worked so hard and has been working hard and now it’s just her time to share her gifts with the world and inspire people,” gushed an elated Tyce Diorio, who directed and choreographed pal Holmes in the piece. “She’s so excited and thrilled and just over the moon about it and so am I,” he added, having spoken to her post-performance. “We went on this journey together and it’s wonderful to see it all come to fruition. And having Garland...

Since this has been a season of reapportioned Broadway musical numbers, it seems fitting that the only thing that I can think after last night's results show comes from Rock Horror Picture Show. And that is? "Dammit Janettte, I love you." It's true. America got it horribly wrong last night by not voting for sexy salsa queen Janette Manrara.
In a season that has lacked personality and star quality, Janette oozed it. Despite lacking the formal training of most of the Top 20, Janette managed to dance each new style with aplomb. For me, she was the Joshua Allen of this season. Think about it, last year's winner Joshua Allen may not have had the technical expertise and training of the other finalists, but she managed to excel at just about everything thrown her way and she never took to the stage with less than 100% commitment and an immense sense of fun and passion.

Usually, by this point in the season of "So You Think You Can Dance," there are at least two very clear favorites and then a few dark-horse dancers waiting in the wings. As far as I can remember, past winners Nick Lazzarini, Joshua Allen, Benji Schwimmer and Sabra Johnson won our hearts immediately with their surprisingly wide range of talent and adorable personalities. But when the top 10 performed this week, I was still absolutely stumped about who will win the title of "America's Favorite Dancer."
On the other hand, I can't be the only one who knew Hawaiian heartthrob Kupono Aweau and perky cutie Randi Evans were not long for this competition. Kupono's looks aside, he just doesn't match up in physical strength (witness the way he struggled through his lifts in this week's paso doble), and as Nigel Lythgoe said a few weeks ago, he...

Full disclosure: I'm a rabid So You Think You Can Dance fan. Every summer for the past four years the talent on display on this show simply blows every other reality competition out of the water. So much so, that one can even overlook the nagging, hetero-cheerleading presence of producer Nigel Lythgoe on the judging panel.
Nigel's peculiar obsession with the masculinity of male dancers aside, Sytycd raises your standards when it comes to dance. I mean, once you start watching this show it is awfully hard to sit through an episode of Dancing with the Stars.
Sytycd is now in its fifth season, and every year we wonder if they can assemble dancers talented enough to stack up against previous season standouts such as Travis Wall, Danny Tidwell, Neil Haskell, and a host of others.

So You Think You Can Dance struts its stuff back onto Fox this Thursday for its fifth season (with a sixth already in the works), and can we just say, yay! It feels like forever since we last heard a proper Mary Murphy squeal. Brace yourselves for this—season five has taken it to yet another level and is bringing out the best dancers ever. We know that seems impossible after last season (hello, remember Joshua Allen and Katee Shean?). Plus, we've heard it all before on every other reality competition show, but for some reason, we're inclined to believe the folks at Sytycd—probably because it's been proven to be true with each new season. We were lucky enough to catch executive producer-judge...
