PVR and Inox Leisure, two of the largest cinema operators in India, are merging to create a multiplex giant in the country.
The deal, which will be subject to regulatory approvals, would see the combined entity oversee more than 1,500 screens across 109 cities. PVR is India’s biggest chain with 850 screens, while Inox has around 650.
The agreement comes as both companies are attempting to emerge back to full strength following a pandemic-disrupted two years of closures and delayed releases. The outfits said it would help them both improve efficiency, reach new markets and optimize costs.
“The film exhibition sector has been one of the worst impacted sectors on account of the pandemic and creating scale to achieve efficiencies is critical for the long-term survival of the business and fight the onslaught of digital Ott platforms,” said PVR Chairman Ajay Bijli said in a statement.

The Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (Mami) has secured two major sponsors for this year’s Mumbai Film Festival, providing some much-needed financial security for the October event.
Reliance Jio Infocomm (Rjil), owned by Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has come on board as title sponsor, while broadcaster Star India has been signed up as associate sponsor partner.
The festival resorted to crowdfunding last year when Reliance Ada Group, headed by Ambani’s younger brother, Anil Ambani, chose not to renew its sponsorship deal.
Headed by chairperson Kiran Rao and festival director Anupama Chopra, the Mumbai Film Festival will take place this year from October 29 to November 5. The call for entries was launched last month via a promotional film produced by Equinox, Vinod Chopra Films, Dharma Productions and Phantom Films.
In addition to Rao and Chopra, the Mami board of trustees includes filmmakers Anurag Kashyap, Farhan Akhtar, Karan Johar and Vikramaditya Motwane; actors Riteish Deshmukh and Deepika Padukone; and industry...

The Mumbai Film Festival has confirmed that Anupama Chopra is taking over as festival director starting with this year’s edition (Oct 29-Nov 5) while filmmaker Kiran Rao will head the board of trustees.
Organised by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (Mami), the Mumbai fest was rescued from a funding crunch last year by donations from the public, local industrialists, producers, filmmakers and stars.
Chopra, a film critic, TV anchor and author, was instrumental in rallying local industry support for the festival, which she joined last year in the role of creative director. She takes over this year with a mission to find long-term sustainable funding for the annual event.
Rao, who will head the Mami board, directed critically-acclaimed drama Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries), which premiered at Toronto International Film Festival, and also produces films and TV series through Aamir Khan Productions.
