A “story about facing life” set in Miyagi prefecture, 10 years after the Great East Japan Earthquake. A former musician who lost her boyfriend in an accident. A pro boxer who keeps fighting even after the age of 30 and his wife. A woman fighting terminal cancer, who wants to stay alive as long as she can to attend her daughter’s wedding. Young stage actors who play out the “story of a soul”, while feeling nervous about their future. And lastly, a middle school girl who lost family members in a disaster and now has thoughts of suicide.
Each of the characters has a different problem to deal with, but all of them are stories about facing life. A story about living and surviving, and a future that will resonate with viewers everywhere.

After a decade-long stint in Hollywood, which includes the likes of a bombastic Mission: Impossible entry and the infinitely rewatchable Face/Off, in the last decade, John Woo has mostly stuck to large-scale Chinese epics which haven’t quite made a splash stateside. However, that could change which is next project, which finds him returning to his action roots.
Set to premiere at Venice Film Festival before heading to Toronto International Film Festival is Manhunt, Wood’s remake of the 1976 Japanese thriller Kimi yo Fundo no Kawa o Watare. Following a man who is framed for a robbery and rape and attempts to get on the right side of justice, the first trailer has now landed. Due to it being an international look, the editing is fairly clunky, but all in all, it’s nice to see Woo getting back to high-octane thrills.

The 74th Venice International Film Festival (August 30 – September 9) has just announced the world premiere of John Woo’s action thriller Manhunt as part of its Out of Competition roster. The film is hotly anticipated as it marks the return of the Hong Kong director to the police thriller genre 25 years after his classic Hard Boiled, starring Chow Yun-fat, Tony Leung and Anthony Wong.
Set in Japan, Manhunt is the story of a Chinese man wrongly convicted for rape and multiple murders. He becomes the target of a manhunt by the local Japanese police, while he sets out himself to find the real killers.
The film has Chinese star Zhang Hanyu (The Great Wall, Operation Mekong) and Japanese actor-musician Masaharu Fukuyama (Suspect X, Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends) in the lead roles. The predominantly Japanese supporting cast includes Yasuaki Kurata, Jun Kunimura, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, Nanami Sakuraba, Naoto Takenaka and Tao Okamoto.

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming live-action Attack on Titan movie, and it’s pretty freakin’ spectacular. It seems like some Attack on Titan fans out there are torn on this big screen adaptation, but I think it looks like it’s going to be a hell of a lot of fun! This trailer gives us our best look yet at what's in store for us, and I love what I'm seeing! I have to say, I enjoyed watching the reactions of the characters as they watch in horror as someone gets eat by a Titan.
The story of Attack on Titan takes place in a world where the remnants of humanity live inside a series of connected cities, isolated by enormous walls. These walls exists to keep the Titans out, gigantic humanoid creatures who devour humans seemingly without reason. These Titans have reduced the world's population to staggeringly low numbers.

13 awesome character posters have been released for director Shinji Higuchi's live-action Attack of Titan film. Each one gives us a look at a different character in the film. I've got to say, I love what I'm seeing here. It's definitely exciting to get our first glimpse at what the style and tone of the film will be.
One of the last things we heard about the Japanese feature is that it would be split into two films. Attack on Titan creator, Hajime Isayama, helped in the creation of the movie and even came up with seven additional characters. Of course, the movie will stay true to the spirit of the source material.
The cast for the film includes Haruma Miura as Eren, Kiko Mizuhara as Mikasa, Kanata Hongo as Armin, Satomi Ishihara as Hanji, Nanami Sakuraba as Sasha, Takahiro Miura as Jean, Hiroki Hasegawa as Shikishima, Ayame Misaki as Hiana,...

I've got some good news for all you Attack on Titan fans out there! Last week director Shinji Higuchi announced that the live-action adaptation he's working on will be split into two feature films! He also revealed that with the help of manga creator Hajime Isayama, they will introduce some new characters and new, more dangerous villains. As a fan of the franchise, I'm completely okay with new characters being added to the story. I'm sure the movie will end up being just as badass as the anime.

On Monday it was announced that Sho Sakurai and Keiko Kitagawa will be starring in a movie version of Fuji TV’s Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de, a 10-episode TV drama which aired from October-December last year.

The movie version will be largely the same, just on a larger scale. Shooting will take place mostly aboard the “SuperStar Virgo”, the largest luxury liner in Asia.

Earlier today it was announced that Hiroshi Abe will be playing the lead role in a new movie titled “Tengoku Kara no Yell”, which was inspired by the late Okinawan altruist and mentor, Hikaru Nakasone. The film will be directed by former A.D. Chikato Kumazawa with a script by Masaya Ozaki (Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, Shiroi Haru).
Abe will play a man named Hikaru Oshiro who builds a music studio in the basement of his business in Motobu-cho, Okinawa to give local teens a place to practice for free—provided they’re respectful, empathetic to others, and do well in school. The real-life Nakasone continued mentoring youths right up until his death from cancer in November of 2009.
Abe’s co-stars include Mimura as Oshiro’s wife Michiko and 18-year-old Nanami Sakuraba as an aspiring singer and guitarist.

Summer Wars isn't your average anime movie - while we do get the familiar visuals of perverted nosebleeds, oversized sweat drops and magical worlds where almost anything can happen, the difference with this film is that it feels too real. Yes, even during the supernatural chaos.
The script revolves around the online world of Oz, an Internet sensation where people can socialize, control businesses, and play games from sports and cards to martial arts showdowns, all in the guise of a personalized avatar. Facebook meets Gaia much? It's all eerily familiar, which seals the movie's message about the destructive powers of social networking.
One Oz security worker and high school math genius, Kenji Koise (Ryūnosuke Kamiki), finds his summer plans rapidly changing when the most popular girl in school, Natsuki Shinohara (Nanami Sakuraba), hires him to accompany her to a family reunion for a few days - with the job...

Word came out last November that there would be a new Chushingura film, Saigo no Chushingura [The Last Chushingura] directed by Shigemichi Sugita. This is the first retelling of the Japanese 'national legend' since Kon Ichikawa's 47 Ronin back in 1994. The first pics started to surface back in February actually and with some current ones surfacing we have a quartet of images in a new gallery. Left, obviously, is Koji Yakusho. After the break you will also find Koichi Sato and I believe that is Nanami Sakuraba in the second image. She plays Kane, the secret daughter of Yakusho's Seo Magojaemon. ...

Virtual worlds as depicted in film and television can be something of a sore point for many people. It doesn't take a geek to realise filmmakers frequently find it hard to resist the temptation to jazz up technology, make it more visual, make it sexier. Films dealing with these subjects that strike a happy medium between realism and artistry are few and far between.
Surprisingly, Mamoru Hosoda's Summer Wars is definitely one of the minority. It's a thoughtfully drawn, almost tangible near-future that lifts from any number of recognisable real-world examples. Surprising because it's also a riotously silly, visually dazzling, hugely enjoyable genre mashup that firmly establishes Hosoda as one of the leading lights in Japan's animation industry.
