A campaigning Donald Trump did not receive the most rapturous greeting when he showed up at the Iowa-Iowa State game in Ames today.
When the former president stepped out onto the concourse to wave and give thumbs up to the crowd, he got a few cheers — and some noticeable boos. According to the Des Moines Register, which noted the booing, “he drew far more eager and excited onlookers,” however. Listen for yourself below.

Trump was there in a private suite with influential Republican donor and casino magnate Gary Kirke, according to the paper. While Trump was inside, fans in seats on the other side of the suite’s glass viewing wall tried to get his attention, many of them pointing at him or waving, some making other gestures.

Books are being pulled from the library shelves of an Iowa school district following new legislation from Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds, which purports to protect children from obscene material, The Gazette reports.
The new legislation, Senate File 496, prohibits “instruction related to gender identity and sexual orientation in school districts, charter schools and innovation zone schools in kindergarten through grade six.” It requires that every book available to students be “age appropriate” and free of any “descriptions or visual depictions of a sex act.”

While the rivalry between Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis heats up, their supporters are getting into loud confrontations. As both candidates were in Iowa to attend the state fair, groups of their supporters were screaming and cursing at each other in a Des Moines bar.
Three people who were at The Copper Cup bar on Friday night told Politico that officials connected to DeSantis-aligned super Pac Never Back Down got into a verbal altercation with a supporter of the former president.
The bickering lasted “several minutes,” per Politico, and “multiple F bombs were dropped.

AI has entered the contest for the race for the 2024 Republican nomination for president.
A pro-Ron DeSantis super Pac released an ad that uses a voice generated by artificial intelligence to impersonate former President Donald Trump, Politico reported.
The ad, created by the “Never Back Down” super Pac, goes after Trump over his recent criticism of Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds. It calls the Republican governor “a conservative champion,” and asks why Trump is attacking her.
Then it has a quote in a voice that sounds like Trump speaking about endorsing her and holding rallies. The text is pulled from a Truth Social comment the former president posted on July 10 after Reynolds said she would remain neutral rather than endorse a candidate in the first-in-the-nation primary.
“I opened up the Governor position for Kim Reynolds, & when she fell behind, I Endorsed her, did big Rallies, & she won,” the Trump-like voice says.

At six weeks gestation, many people don’t know they are pregnant — their period is only two weeks late — but, as of last Friday, that is the point at which most women in Iowa are barred from obtaining an abortion. Lest they be accused of being unreasonable, Iowa Republicans are quick to point out that their new ban includes exceptions — like for instances of rape. Under the law signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds, individuals who have been raped will have six weeks and four days to report the incident if...

Ron DeSantis’ campaign has let go of several staff members just two months into it hitting the campaign trail while it deals with bleeding cash in its effort to stave off Donald Trump’s lead for a Republican presidential nomination bid.
According to NBC News, in the campaign’s first six weeks, he had already hit all the top donors and bled through $7.9 million as a presidential candidate, according to the data the network analyzed from his campaign finance disclosure.
Beyond the cash woes, the staff shakeup included about a...

The Iowa state legislature on Tuesday night passed a bill that would ban most abortions after only six weeks of pregnancy. The “fetal heartbeat” bill, which would ban the procedure after cardiac activity is detected in an embryo, would be one of the harshest bans in the nation. Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds is expected to sign it into law this week.
The House called a special sessions to pass the bill 56-34, with every Democrat and two Republicans opposing it. The Senate passed it 32-17 a few hours later. The...

There is no joy in Mudville, goes the famous poem “Casey at the Bat.” There also will be no joy in Dyersville, Iowa in 2023, as the Field of Dreams complex will not host a Major League Baseball game.
Construction on a youth baseball and softball complex was cited as the reason for the tourist attraction not hosting a game next year. The first MLB game was a sensational hit (the 2022 game is tomorrow), making the decision not to host another one strange.
Former MLB slugger Frank Thomas made the announcement that the specially constructed stadium at the site, located near the iconic field from 1989 Kevin Costner film, will not host a game. He held out the possibility of future events, but made no promises.
“It’s a lot going on,” Thomas told the Des Moines Register on Wednesday in Dyersville. “They don’t want to come back if the stadium’s not prepared.

As he prepared to make State Bill 202 law on Thursday, it seemed that Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp was shielding himself. Six white men in suits flanked him, three each on his left and right, and a portrait of a plantation hung on the wall behind him. The only way to bear witness was through the livestream, or the photo that Kemp later tweeted out.

Democrats won the White House, with Joe Biden as the President-elect; Pfizer announced its own news soon after: promising results for a Covid vaccine. For exhibition, these developments are positive — in the same way that a highway sign can confirm you’re headed in the right direction while still being thousands of miles away.
“Congress can save cinemas by including $15 billion for grants for independent venues in a Covid-19 relief package,” the National Association of Theater Owners announced in a November 9 press release touting the Save Our Stages Act. “Without industry-specific assistance, movie theaters simply will not survive the economic impact of the pandemic.”

If you’ve been sleeping through the pandemic and are still under the impression Donald Trump cares one iota about the welfare of the Americans he represents, the president on Wednesday night offered up a pristine, one-minute encapsulation of exactly where his priorities lie. Speaking to a crowd of Iowans, Trump ranted about how the flooding that has ravaged communities across the state has been sucking up air time that should be going to issues that actually matter, like his Nobel Peace Prize nominations.

The Trump administration blew $349 billion in small-business pandemic aid in four weeks, less time than it took for me to grow out my quarantine beard. That is nothing to be proud of, but President Trump still took his victory lap on Tuesday, boasting about breaking speed records for loans like it was an Olympic sport. Unmentioned were the carelessly written rules that allowed at least $500 million to go to Fortune 500 companies, major hotel chains, and other publicly held corporations. Some will return the tens or hundreds of millions, some won’t.

A cousin of Mollie Tibbets, the 20-year-old Iowa college student whose murder garnered national attention, has pushed back on Republican lawmakers’ attempts to politicize her death after Cristhian Rivera, an undocumented 24-year-old Mexican immigrant, was arrested and charged with Tibbets’ murder.
“For 34 days, investigators searched for 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts,” the White House official Twitter account posted last week. “Yesterday, an illegal alien, now charged with first-degree murder, led police to the cornfield where her body was found. The Tibbetts family has been permanently separated. They are not alone.” The tweet...
