AnimeJapan 2024 marked the year that the biggest anime industry event in the world returned to a pre-pandemic “normal”: The business days were back, the adorable family space returned and the built-up pressure from years of cancellations has lifted. In terms of the event, the feeling of regularity returned, and that's...fine? Alongside a reported 130,000 attendees heading to the event this year, journey with me as we walk around the halls of Tokyo Big Sight and see what the anime industry has to offer in 2024. The Big Three AnimeJapan Booths The "big three" booths at AnimeJapan are typically Kadokawa, Toho animation and Aniplex, which the latter includes the separate Fate/Grand Order space that is sometimes even more impressive. This year, two of the three returned with setups that knocked it out of the convention halls. Starting at Toho Animation, the atrium welcomed visitors with some of the company's current most popular characters – Anya,...

A magnificent feature-length episode featuring one of the best plot twists of 2023 marked the beginning of the series anime adaptation, and as a result, it had one of the best streaming premieres for an anime series gaining a lot of traction and appreciation from fans.
Oshi no Ko season 2
The anime series is based on the same-titled Japanese manga series authored by Aka Akasaka. When a new seinen series is released it seems to stay iconic for many years. Such is the case for Oshi no Ko which is, in my opinion, one of the most surprising and striking anime of 2023. Related: Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2024: Your Ultimate Guide Aka Akasaka is widely known in the anime and manga world thanks to the popularity of Kaguya-sama: Love Is War . The series adaptation did justice to the author’s initial romantic comedy tone and gave us a wholesome sitcom where it’s impossible not to laugh at the awkwardness and seriousness of the main characters. Oshi no Ko is a completely different project. Written by Akasaka and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari, the story is so different that it took a lot of us off guard. Let’s take a look at why the series makes a strong contender for Anime of the Year . An Unexpected...

In a surprising turn of events, Oshi No Ko manga illustrator Mengo Yokoyari found herself at the centre of a social media storm after attending the “Maaya Sakamoto Live Tour 2023” concert with voice actress Ayane Sakura.
Ayane Sakura is known for voicing Gabi Braun in Aot, Ochako Uraraka in Mha, Yotsuba Nakano in The Quintessential Quintuplets, among others.
The illustrator shared a snapshot from the recent concert on her Twitter account, expressing her excitement about the experience. However, little did she anticipate the intense reactions from some fans who assumed it was more than a casual outing between friends.
The situation escalated quickly, especially among those who perceived Ayane Sakura as an ‘idol.’ The attachment of perceived ‘idol rules’ and the assumption of a romantic connection between the voice actress and the artist led to some obsessive fans expressing disappointment and frustration.
This reached a point where Yokoyari felt compelled to address the misunderstanding.

The film starts out with Noko, a lead singer of Japanese metafunk band Shinsei Kamattechan, on stage, singing while holding a laptop in front of him. With fans' comments flying across the live streaming images of the concert in the background, Noko sings off key, accompanied by childish pop melodies and loud guitar. His voice is awkward and powerful at the same time. Unlike the group's less than rock star attire and cheerful sound, their lyrics are often dark and borderline weird. Yu Irie, who graced last year's Nyaff with a pair of sleeper hits, 8000 Miles and 8000 Miles 2 about Japanese wannabe rappers and the suburban ennui, comes back this year with a decidedly mature film, Ringing in Their Ears, featuring aforementioned, Shinsei...
