Kendrick Lamar had an Austin crowd howling the hook to "Alright" before he even launched into a riotous rendition of the To Pimp a Butterfly cut during a performance set to air on the second half of Season 41 of Austin City Limits.
The clip finds the Compton rapper at his breathless best, unspooling every rhyme and syllable into a thread for the bouncing crowd to hang on to. Lamar has an intuitive interplay with his band, and at the end, he teases a false ending before firing off one final...

From this week's edition of Skip Or Repeat: capsule album reviews on the ambitious pinings of Nate Ruess' "Grand Romantic," Hilary Duff's pleasure-centric "Breathe In. Breathe Out.", James Taylor's nostalgic "Before This World," Giorgio Moroder's "Deja Vu," Adam Lambert's "The Original High" and Mika's "No Place In Heaven." Maybe some of these albums move the needle for you. Maybe you need something more... try on Active Child's "Mercy," Academy Award-winning Michael Giacchino's "Inside Out" soundtrack, Heartless Bastards' "Restless Ones," High On Fire's "Luminiferous" or the Vans Warped Tour compilation for 2015.

With the Austin Film Festival now in our collective rearview mirrors, the local film calendar is going to start turning more actively towards some of the biggest films of the year. Most of them will not be blockbusters (although Interstellar certainly is), but many titles will be hopefuls for awards season. As far as Christopher Nolan's new film goes, we are very fortunate to live in a market where it's playing in all available formats. While you can see it in 4K digital or even digital IMAX, the preferred format for this one is actual film and you can catch local screenings in 35mm, 70mm (at the Ritz) and even a proper 15-perf 70mm IMAX print at the Bob Bullock (where the screen towers six stories above you). Sadly, this will be the final movie screened on film at the museum before they convert to digital projection, so I'd...

Efficient, distorted, fresh and messy. That's how I'd describe Spoon's "Rent I Pay,"the first song to arrive from their forthcoming album "They Want My Soul." The band has in various forms of away-time for the last four years, their longest break. Singer Britt Daniel formed the Divine Fits, drummer Jim Eno has produced some great records from !!!, Heartless Bastards and more, for instance. I've gotten the impression from talking to Daniel before that he needs a certain amount of distance from his band to get anything done. He moved out of Austin, for instance; he writes lyrics separately, which is one of the hardest part of his job description. I love the crunch and pop of 2001's "Girls Can Tell" and the tight empty spaces of 2002's "Kill the Moonlight." I don't think I or the band could explain how those albums -- released one after the other...

You don’t have to throw out Little Feat to make room for Fleet Foxes
Google “ways to discover new music” and no less than 89,800,000 results pop up. Tons of websites, blogs, radio stations broadcasting the old-fashioned way and streamlining online, not to mention music sites like Spotify and Radio Paradise are dedicated to the proposition that all people deserve to discover new tunes.
So why are so many of our needles stuck in the “classic rock” groove, playing the same albums since 1992 -- or 1968? Not that there’s anything wrong with continuing to cherish the music we grew up with. For our generation, it would be hard not to: Some of the most enduring music (at least rock, soul, jazz and blues) was made when we were coming of age. But what I find frustrating is the misbegotten mindset that nothing new is worth listening to.

The key to any voyage into the twangy depths of this weekend's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival is planning.
San Francisco's annual free celebration of bluegrass (and also not bluegrass) in Golden Gate Park, now in its 12th consecutive year, has gotten so popular that shuttling between stages to see all of your favorite bands can prove virtually impossible. Instead, the best idea is often just to get there early, pick a spot near the stage you're most interested in and stay there for the long haul.
(Scroll Down For Playlist And Lineup)
While the lineup was announced months ago, the actual full schedule, complete with set times, was only released recently. Essential planning's gotta all be done Right This Very Second.
Our top recommendations are Ben Kweller, Buddy Miller, Robert Earl Keen, The Dirty Three, the Heartless Bastards, Son Volt and Les Claypool's Duo De Twang. If you're curious as to why this is exciting,...

The Heartless Bastards have been making a habit out of releasing music videos that are a fascinating mix of both interesting and strange for their fourth studio album Arrow, released earlier this year. The first single off of Arrow, "Parted Ways," is possibly the weirdest professionally made music video you'll see all year. Even more recently, the band has given us a video for the outstanding track "Only For You." The video is produced and directed by Brady Beasley and Louisiana Kreutz and highlights a summer romance between two adorable kids - kind of.

Heartless Bastards have a funny name when you consider how damn happy their childish "Only For You" music video is. The track and the visuals are perfect comfort for those stuck in cubicle hell and conference calls. Why don't you just grab a bottle of wine and jump in a pool with all your clothes on? Furthermore, it's confirmation that those who have bred curly-haired children are blessed for a lifetime: you're staring down an eternity of candy commercials and music videos where joy is aim. It was shot in Dripping Springs, Texas and was helmed by Brad Beesley (Flaming Lips'...

Chuck vs. the Music: Five Seasons of Great Tracks
The final episode of Chuck airs this Friday and this is an impressive achievement considering how close it came to cancellation during this period. Chuck clearly has a rabid fan base that has shown their devotion which led to this 5-year run. The Subway campaign was a good way to prove that despite low audience figures this show was worth keeping on the air and I definitely bought a sandwich or two.
For me though it would be far easier to measure my love for this show by the amount of tracks on iTunes that I have purchased after hearing them first on Chuck and I’m sure I’m not the only one. For some it is the pop culture references that made Chuck the charming show it is, for others it is the characters and while these two factors are incredibly important,...
