When “The Last Thing He Told Me” gets to the end of its twisty story, the thriller’s central conflict is not resolved via violence or trickery but rather a simple conversation between two people about the well-being of a child.
Based on the book of the same name by Laura Dave and adapted for Apple TV+ by Dave and her husband, Oscar-winning writer Josh Singer (“Spotlight”), “The Last Thing He Told Me” focuses on a woman named Hannah (Jennifer Garner), whose new husband, Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), disappears and leaves behind a note imploring Hannah to protect his daughter, Bailey (Angourie Rice). Over the course of the seven-episode limited series, Hannah and her stepdaughter travel from San Francisco to Austin, Texas, and find themselves embroiled in a larger conspiracy that includes Owen’s former father-in-law,...

“The Last Thing He Told Me” ends with Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), disguised in a very long beard and baseball cap, finally connecting with his wife Hannah (Jennifer Garner) at one of her wood-turning exhibitions.
The Apple TV+ drama follows Hannah and her stepdaughter Bailey (Angourie Rice) as they try to piece together clues about Owen’s disappearance after his tech firm The Shop comes under investigation for fraud. As they figure out the complex reason why he vanishes, Hannah and Bailey forge a bond beyond their step relationship, with the last word of dialogue being Bailey calling Hannah “mom.”
The penultimate scene sees Hannah glimpse Owen by the wooden wedding ring he made to match hers. When she realizes it’s him in her woodwork exhibition, she drops some paperwork, and he bends to the ground to pick it up, whispering “The could’ve been boys still love you,” to signal that he is okay.

Those trying to predict the ending of the Apple TV+ limited series “The Last Thing He Told Me” may have fallen into the trap author Laura Dave saw in the genre that initially prompted her to write the book.
The disappearance of Owen Michaels (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) from his wife Hannah (Garner) and daughter Bailey (Angourie Rice) doesn’t look good at the beginning of the series, especially when his tech company The Shop goes under investigation for fraud. Hannah and her stepdaughter Bailey spend the rest of the show unraveling the complicated reason for Owen’s disappearance, but Dave told TheWrap she wanted to upend the way these stories usually conclude.
“Often when I watch something or read something in the thriller genre [that] involves a love story, you either find out that the husband was bad and then the wife gets some sort of revenge and starts again, or the husband is good,...

Owen Michaels in The Last Thing He Told Me is the embodiment of what people who love hard do for their loved ones. Olivia Newman’s show on Apple+, based on the novel by Laura Dave, tells the story of Hannah Hall, a woman who has to go on a mission with her stepdaughter Bailey after Bailey’s father and Hannah’s husband, Owen Michaels, go missing. We don’t see Owen for most of the miniseries, except for the memories of him that Hannah relives. It’s his memories and the time Hannah spent with him that drives her to make most of the decisions, which ultimately end up doing exactly what Owen wanted—ensuring his daughter had a good life. We see him only once at the very end, and he leaves Hannah with a cryptic message. Let’s look at Owen Michaels and explore how far a...

Olivia Newman’s The Last Thing He Told Me premiered its finale episode today, and we experienced a bittersweet ending for Bailey and Hannah. Bailey accepted Hannah as her mother, and she never went without a mother’s love again, but the women lost Owen from their lives. Hannah lost her husband, while Bailey lost her father, a hole in her life that might never be filled. The takeaway from the miniseries is the selfless attitude of Hannah, a woman who dedicated so much to keeping a promise made to her husband. Let’s take a look at Hannah and understand why she can be considered an ideal parent.
Growing up without a mother as a woman is a hardship that only the women who have had to undergo such a situation can fathom. Hannah Hall from Texas was a young girl who didn’t receive a mother’s love...

The fourth episode of The Last Thing He Told Me, directed by Olivia Newman, was released today on Apple TV, and we’re finally starting to get somewhere. The TV series based on the novel by Laura Dave stars Jennifer Garner, Angourie Rice, and Nikolaj Coster Waldau and focuses on how a stepmother named Hannah and her stepdaughter Bailey close the bridge between themselves while searching for Hannah’s husband and Bailey’s dad, Owen. After Owen went missing following a raid at The Shop, the company he used to work at, Hannah and Bailey arrived in New Austin, Texas, to look for him. In the previous episode, Bailey had remembered faint memories about visiting a church and a football field with her dad as a kid, but no proper clues could be produced from these memories. Here’s what follows in Episode 4.

Being a stepmom can be hard - even before your husband mysteriously goes missing. In this exclusive clip from the fourth episode of Apple TV+'s "The Last Thing He Told Me," Jennifer Garner's Hannah and Angourie Rice's Bailey continue their investigation into where Bailey's dad Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) might be. As the pair search through old records, Hannah tries to connect with her stepdaughter, who's still reeling from the information they've found so far and the questions it raises about her identity.
Earlier this month, Rice, 22, talked to Popsugar about the connection between Hannah and Bailey in the series. "Olivia Newman, who directed three of the episodes and is an executive producer as well, pitched it to me as a mother-daughter love story, which I really loved," the actor explained. "It's about two women who don't know how to be in each other's lives. And throughout the course of the story,...

Apple TV’s newest mystery thriller series, “The Last Thing He Told Me,” premiered its third episode today, and Olivia Newman’s show is starting to put a little more effort into ensuring audience retention. However, unless the show manages to maintain the pace or doesn’t speed up things, it’ll lose out on viewership soon enough. In the last episode, Jennifer Garner’s character Hannah Hall took her stepdaughter Bailey to Austin, Texas, to search for more details regarding Hannah’s husband and Bailey’s dad, Owen Michaels (Nikolaj Coster Waldau), after he went missing. Now, as the two women go from place to place looking for clues that’ll help explain the situation they find themselves in, a call from the lawyer/ ex-boyfriend of Hannah, Jake Davies, reveals something rather shocking. Jennifer Garner has a complaint about Hannah’s husband in new Apple TV+ limited series, The Last Thing He Told Me.
The show follows the story of Hannah (Garner) and her husband Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) who mysteriously disappears. But before he left he managed to smuggle a note to her, which said just two words: ‘protect her’, referring to his teenage daughter.
“There’s not time for ‘Xoxo love you honey, so sorry’?'” she jokingly demanded of Coster-Waldau. “It’s just ‘protect her’, period?”
“You have a point,” Coster-Waldau replied, dryly.
Garner and Coster-Waldeu were speaking on a panel at Deadline’s The Night Before Contenders event on Friday at the DGA theater in LA. With them on the panel from The Last Thing He Told Me was Aisha Tyler, who plays Hannah’s lawyer best friend Jules; Hello Sunshine’s president of film and television and executive producer,...

Jennifer Garner really wanted the starring role in “The Last Thing He Told Me,” Hello Sunshine’s television adaptation of Laura Dave‘s novel of the same name.
At the series’ Los Angeles premiere on Thursday, Garner told Variety she went after the role of Hannah when original star Julia Roberts dropped out of the project. “I had to just do anything in my power to plead my case,” Garner said.
As a fan of the novel, Garner expressed her excitement for the adaptation starring Roberts: “I thought ‘Oh, she’s going to be amazing!’ I love that story I can’t wait to watch.” But once the role became available, Garner knew she had to pursue the part.
“I just wrote letters to Laura advocating for myself and talking about what the book meant to me and what the role [meant], what I saw in the role and the ways that I felt,...

The series stars Jennifer Garner and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in the leading roles and deals with a fraud that happens at The Shop, a software company, and the subsequent disappearance of Owen Michaels (Waldau). Angourie Rice is an expert at playing a teenager, even though she turned 22 this past January. Last year, the actor starred as the teenage version of Rebel Wilson in Netflix's "Senior Year," as well as a hilariously driven student in the irreverent comedy "Honor Society." Rice also appeared in the McU's Spider-Man movies as Betty Brant, and in 2021's "Mare of Easttown" she played Siobhan, Mare's stubborn daughter. Now, in Apple TV+ series "The Last Thing He Told Me," based on Laura Dave's bestselling novel of the same name, Rice stars as reeling high schooler Bailey opposite of Jennifer Garner, who plays her stepmom, Hannah, whom she can't connect with, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays her missing dad, Owen.

Jennifer Garner stars as Hannah in Apple TV+'s "The Last Thing He Told Me," and her character ends up in some pretty stressful situations. In the show, which is based on the bestselling novel of the same name, Hannah's life turns into a nightmare when her husband Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) mysteriously disappears, leaving her to care for and protect her stepdaughter Bailey (Angourie Rice). But for Garner, filming the show was a dream, and that's partially because she got to reunite with her "Alias" costar Victor Garber. Apple TV+ has unveiled the first trailer for “The Last Thing He Told Me,” the limited series based on the New York Times bestselling novel by Laura Dave.
The seven-part drama stars Jennifer Garner (who also executive produces) as Hannah, a woman who starts to question everything when her husband Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) disappears overnight leaving only a note that reads “protect her.”
“There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for my daughter,” Coster-Waldau’s Owen says when Garner asks what defines him in the beginning of the trailer.
The “her” this note refers to is Bailey (Angourie Rice), Owen’s daughter and Hannah’s step-daughter. The television adaptation also stars Aisha Tyler, Augusto Aguilera, Geoff Stults and John Harlan Kim.
Garner’s Hannah receives the note from a young girl, and a man shows up to her house to tell her that her husband is not who she thinks he is.

USC Annenberg and San Diego State University have both released end-of-year diversity reports looking at behind the scenes representation of 2022’s biggest movies. And the results found that Hollywood severely backslid over the past year.
Both studies — USC Annenberg Inclusion Initative’s “Inclusion in the Director’s Chair” report and the San Diego State Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film’s “Celluloid Ceiling” report — looked at the number of women who directed the top 100 films of the year. This year, just 10 women — Olivia Newman (“Where the Crawdads Sing”), Gina Prince-Bythewood (“The Woman King”), Olivia Wilde (“Don’t Worry Darling”), Jessica M. Thompson (“The Invitation”), Kat Coiro (“Marry Me”), Rosalind Ross (“Father Stu”), Halina Reijn (“Bodies Bodies Bodies”), Kasi Lemmons (“Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody”), Chinonye Chukwu (“Till”) and Maria Schrader (“She Said”) — helmed one of the top 100 highest grossing film’s at the domestic box office this year,...

Despite the unpredictability of the last few years, both in Hollywood and beyond, recent years have proven fruitful for female filmmakers. From winning the top awards at the starriest festivals to notching back to back Best Director Oscar winners (for the first time ever for Zhao and Jane Campion) and churning out big-time box office hits, women have been unquestionably on the rise.
Until, perhaps, now. As we do every year, IndieWire is looking ahead at the next two years of studio features directed by women to get a sense of who Hollywood is elevating in still-rarefied spaces. Getting the chance to helm a studio feature is, of course, not the golden ticket for any director.
But it’s hard to deny the power and prestige of directing a big-time movie released by a major studio, even in a world where streaming platforms are making significant inroads into the “blockbuster” space.

As 2023 dawns, two major academic organizations that measure the progress of inclusion in Hollywood are looking back at the track record for 2022 in film.
The USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative’s latest “Inclusion in the Director’s Chair” report analyzes the gender and race/ethnicity of the directors behind last year’s 100 highest-grossing movies in the U.S., while the San Diego State Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film’s most recent “Celluloid Ceiling” report examined the employment of women in key behind-the-scenes roles in both the 100 and 250 top-grossing movies at the domestic box office.
In the one category shared by both studies — percentage of women directors among top 100 films – the schools came up with slightly different counts (possibly because of the criteria each group uses to compile its Box Office Mojo sampling). Sdsu reported that 11 percent of 2022’s helmers...

Gather together a group of award-winning cinematographers, as THR did on Nov. 6 when it assembled a virtual roundtable that represents some of the year’s most visually striking films, and you might expect a lot of shop talk about lenses and camera rigs, or about the relative merits of live-action filmmaking versus the newest virtual production techniques. But while there was some of that, these lensers were most excited about discussing the emotion their work evokes. “I do the job because I get emotionally involved in telling a story and helping a director tell a story about a real world, a real situation that has something to say,” explained Roger Deakins, the director of photography on Sam Mendes’ semi-autobiographical memory piece Empire of Light. Singer Taylor Swift won’t be making her upcoming directorial debut as an Oscar-nominated filmmaker. Amid a turbulent year for the film industry with dwindling theatrical releases and shuffling release slates, only nine wide release films from major studios had a female director in 2022 — and six of them came from just one studio.
In TheWrap’s annual survey of theatrical releases with at least one female director, Sony Pictures led its Hollywood peers with six of its 13 theatrical wide releases featuring female directors. On the flip side, Disney, Paramount and Lionsgate had entirely male-only wide release slates.
Paramount gave one film directed by a woman (Sanaa Lathan’s “On the Come Up”) a limited day-and-date release, while Disney moved one female-directed title (Domee Shi’s Pixar animated feature “Turning Red”) from theaters to streaming and shifted another to 2023. And Lionsgate, which has hired only one female filmmaker since 2016, released only four films on at least 1,500 screens — none directed by women.

Olivia Wilde turned heads at the People’s Choice Awards just weeks after her public breakup from Harry Styles.
The Booksmart director wore a completely sheer, see-through Christian Dior gown on the red carpet. She styled the black lace dress over high-waisted black briefs and accentuated her waist with a chunky black belt with gold hardware. Razor-thin spaghetti straps and a low scoop created an elegant, sexy look for the newly single star.

Olivia Newman’s mystery film Where the Crawdads Sing has arrived on Netflix in the US and immediately jumped to No 1 on the site’s most popular movies ranking.
The film, which follows the story of a girl named Kya, features Daisy-Edgar Jones, Taylor John Smith, Harris Dickinson, and David Strathairn.
Set in the 1950s and 1960s in rural North Carolina, the narrative blends elements of murder mystery, romance, and nature writing with a coming-of-age story about Kya, who grew up alone in the marshes.
The film is based on the bestselling book of the same name which sold more than 12m copies since its publication in 2018. It was featured as part of Reese Witherspoon’s book club, and the actor now serves as the film’s executive producer.

A central question of “Where the Crawdads Sing,” adapted to film from Delia Owen’s popular novel through Lucy Alibar’s screenplay, is: Who killed Chase Andrews (Harris Dickinson)? At first, it seems the answer might elude viewers — until the final moments of the story subtly reveal what happened to him.
First, some backstory: “Where the Crawdads Sing” recounts the life story of Kya (Daisy Edgar-Jones). Kya’s earliest memories of her family are loving ones, but as she tells her story from a dank jail cell after getting arrested for her suspected killing of Chase Andrews, she reveals that her family left her all alone to fend for herself in the marsh where they lived.

“Shells play a central part of the murder mystery as a clue,” reveals Oscar and Emmy-winning composer Mychael Danna (“Life of Pi”) about turning to the distinctly ancient sounds elicited from the natural world. For our recent webchat he adds, “as many of us know, that’s one of the earliest instruments that human beings ever used blowing into shells,” he says. “It sounds primordial and ancient, which it is, as an instrument. It really sounds like the marsh. People have asked me, what is that? Is that a voice? Is it a woodwind? Is it a brass instrument? It’s a seashell being blown. That’s kind of cool that you don’t know what it is, but it feels like the marsh that you’re seeing.” We talked with Danna as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2022/2023 awards contenders. Sony has revealed that 3000 Pictures’ “Where the Crawdads Sing” will open in China beginning Nov. 25, a rare booking for a Hollywood film as the nation has cut back on foreign releases.
The Reese Witherspoon-produced melodrama, about a young outcast who finds herself embroiled in a murder trial, has already earned 140.2 million worldwide. That is nearly six times its 24 million production budget in global theatrical revenue alone, so anything from China can be treated as glorified “found money.”
Based on Delia Owens’s bestselling novel, director Olivia Newman and writer Lucy Alibar’s period piece was notable last summer for being among the only mainstream theatrical releases from, for and about women. In a summer ruled by mavericks, minions, superheroes and space rangers, the Daisy Edgar-Jones vehicle opened with 17.25 million debut weekend in mid-July and legged out to 90.2 million domestic.

Daisy Edgar-Jones starrer “Where the Crawdads Sing” is set to get a theatrical release in China, Sony Pictures revealed today.
The film, which is based on the coming-of-age novel by Delia Owens, will hit Chinese theaters on Nov. 25.
It was released in the U.S. in July, where it made 2.3 million in Thursday previews. According to Sony, the film has generated 140.2 million worldwide, of which 50 million came from international markets.
“Where the Crawdads Sing” stars Edgar-Jones as Kya, who raises herself in the marshlands of North Carolina after being abandoned by her family. Isolated and viewed with suspicion by prejudiced locals, Kya keeps to herself until she one day befriends two young men. But when one of them unexpectedly dies, she becomes the center of suspicion.
Taylor John Smith (“Sharp Objects”), Harris Dickinson (“The King’s Man”), Michael Hyatt (“Snowfall”), Sterling Macer, Jr. (“Double Down”) and David Strathairn (“Nomadland”) also star.

Sony Pictures’ Where the Crawdads Sing has crossed the 90 million mark at the domestic box office, showing proof that it’s not just tentpoles that rule the roost on the big screen. The pic hit the mark on its 82nd day of release, Tuesday, after opening on July 15.
The movie based on the Delia Owens YA mystery novel opened to 17.2M and has a current leg-out factor of 5.2x, which is amazing for any wide title in this wonky marketplace. And it wasn’t even the Christmas season. Sony has pulled off great box office sleepers before, one of the more notable titles pre-pandemic being Little Women, which posted a 5-day start of 29.2M and legged out to 108.1M domestic and six Oscar noms and a win.

“Where the Crawdads Sing” has gathered quite a list of names associated with the film adaptation of Delia Owens’ bestselling novel, which was published in 2018. Reese Witherspoon spotlighted the book as one of the earliest picks in her book club, and then her production company Hello Sunshine signed on to adapt the book for the big screen through Lucy Alibar’s screenplay.
Directed by Olivia Newman, the story weaves together several complex themes, including coming of age, survival and a murder mystery. Taylor Swift even wrote a song for the film after reading Owens’ novel because she was so inspired by the story: “Carolina,” which released June 23, echoes Owens’ naturalistic writing with a haunting melody.
Fans of the book, Reese Witherspoon, Taylor Swift and/or actress Daisy Edgar Jones may be wondering how to watch the upcoming film adaptation. We have all the details below.

Speaking in Locarno, Edgar-Jones also expressed desire to work in UK indie film again.
Rising UK star Daisy Edgar-Jones has expressed a desire to work as a producer and director as her career develops.
“I love every aspect of filmmaking, so I think producing would be so magical because I would get to learn about the whole process,” said Edgar-Jones, speaking to Screen at Locarno Film Festival where she received the Leopard Club honorary award this weekend. “I love asking why a Dop has chosen to shoot something with a particular lens; I love the music that imbues a scene with a whole different meaning.

‘Normal People’ Star Daisy Edgar-Jones on ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ and the ‘Strangeness’ of Stardom
One of the breakout stars of the pandemic, Daisy Edgar-Jones, was finally out and about at Locarno Film Festival, where she picked up the Leopard Club Award and introduced her latest film “Where the Crawdads Sing,” based on a novel by Delia Owens.
“The whole idea of being a ‘breakout star’ is a strange thing to comprehend anyway. The strangeness of that, happening in tandem with the strangeness of the pandemic, meant that those things will be forever mixed up together for me,” she tells Variety, recalling “Normal People’s” triumphant unveiling during the lockdown.
“In reality, nothing in my life was changing. I was still in my bedroom on Zoom. This year, I have been all the more grateful for being able to promote the projects I worked on and actually be with the people I made them with.”
