Elvis Presley made a return to the zeitgeist this past year.
On the heels of the Oscar-nominated 2022 drama Elvis, starring Austin Butler, the adult animated series Agent Elvis, featuring a “retro cool” look and the voice of Matthew McConaughey as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, arrived in April on Netflix.
Created by Priscilla Presley and John Eddie, with Eddie and head writer Mike Arnold serving as showrunners, the animated sitcom follows the music icon as he moonlights as a secret agent between performances during the period from 1968 to 1973. “It’s a known fact Elvis wanted to be a secret agent. The whole impetus for the series started from that photo of Elvis going to Richard Nixon and offering his services as an undercover agent,” claims Eddie. “I had always pitched it as Elvis Presley as a secret agent fighting crime, as if directed by Quentin Tarantino.”

“Agent Elvis,” the hand-drawn adult animated Netflix series from Sony Pictures Animation and directed by Fletcher Moules (“Entergalactic”), re-imagines Elvis Presley as a super cool spy in a wild, gory, drugged-out alternate reality. It crosses “Archer” with “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” putting the King square in the crosshairs of everyone from the Manson Family and Howard Hughes to Richard Nixon and Timothy Leary — all while retaining recognizable signposts from Presley’s life, from concert specials to his hatred of Robert Goulet.
There’s also an array of hilarious cameos, including Stanley Kubrick shooting a staged moon landing — guess who ends up in the space suit? — and a young George Lucas getting inspiration for the lightsaber from Hughes’ radioactive urine stream weapon. “Agent Elvis” is so meta that Baz Luhrmann even voices the director of Presley’s final film “Change of Habit.”

Remember when Elvis Presley met Richard Nixon and the president gave the King a badge from the Federal Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, the DEA’s predecessor? Netflix’s new animated comedy series “Agent Elvis” takes that surreal premise and runs with it, turning Elvis into a secret agent who travels the world battling threats to the U.S. of A. under the cover of his job as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. It’s like “Archer,” with a Tupelo twist.
On Wednesday, Netflix revealed a trailer for the series, which premieres Friday, March 17, and announced the rest of the voice cast. If Baz Luhrmann as a version of the King of Rock’n’Roll you’ve definitely never seen before. Check out the trailer below:
Yep, in Agent Elvis, Presley isn’t just the ‘Hound Dog’ crooner – he’s also a super spy for the American government, as quick with a John Wick-worthy pencil takedown as a shake of the hips. And just for proof you’re not hallucinating, here’s the show’s batshit official logline: “Elvis Presley trades in his jumpsuit for a jet pack when he is covertly inducted into a secret government spy program to battle the dark forces that threaten the country he loves – all while holding down his day job as the King of Rock and Roll.” So this Elvis is A Little Less Conversation, a little more action.

Seasoned film and television animator Robert Valley is tackling a new project about the life of Billy Rose — a songwriter, Broadway producer and unwitting activist.

After becoming the must-see cultural phenomenon last year during the pandemic, Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit” dominated the Creative Arts Emmys this weekend with nine awards. Scott Frank’s Cold War-era limited series about orphan chess prodigy Beth (Anya Taylor-Joy) was honored across the board for casting, cinematography, period costumes, editing, period makeup (non-prosthetic), original dramatic score (Carlos Rafael Rivera), production design, sound editing, and sound mixing.
We’ll have to wait and see if this translates to “The Queen’s Gambit” winning Outstanding Limited Series at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards on September 19. Regardless, Frank assembled a talented team of craftspeople for conveying an almost surreal mood and atmosphere to Beth’s rite of passage.
But the big question for Tesoro was: What is too much chess? The answer: Play the faces more than the chess. And once viewers got their first glimpse of Beth, they were hooked and carried...

In Season 2 of Neflix’s “Love, Death & Robots,” the adult animated anthology from executive producers David Fincher and Tim Miller (“Deadpool”) continued its embrace of survival and immortality in strange dystopian environments. However, there were eight shorts instead of 18 and a greater emphasis on philosophizing, with some directors stepping out of their comfort zones.
Indeed, the sci-fi anthology, produced by Blur Studio for Netflix, so impressed the TV Academy that it was awarded four juried prizes on Wednesday: Robert Valley, production designer (“Ice”); Patricio Betteo, background artist (“Ice”); Dan Gill, stop-motion animator (“All Through the House”); and Laurent Nicholas, character designer (“Automated Customer Service”).
“We tried to elevate the stories further and to give deeper explorations of some of these adult themes,” said supervising director Jennifer Yuh Nelson (“The Darkest Minds” and the “Kung Fu Panda”sequels). “So it was very much like a curating process to go from...

The Television Academy announced the juried award winners for the 2021 Emmy Awards on Wednesday, with Netflix’s animated anthology series “Love, Death & Robots” scoring four separate accolades, the only series to earn multiple awards.

Rounding out the rest of the animation honors were storyboard artist David Krentz for his work on “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal” and lead character layout artist Nik Ranieri for “The Simpsons.”

“The Masked Singer” is now a two-time Emmy winner for its wild, wacky and breathtaking costumes. (We can already hear Piglet oinking in delight.) The costume design team, led by Marina Toybina (watch our recent interview), claimed its first trophy last year at the 2020 Creative Arts ceremony, but now this category has been changed to a juried award, so it gets voted on weeks before all of the other races. Fox’s “The Masked Singer” shares its second prize in the Variety/Nonfiction/Reality Costumes category with two other programs — Disney+’s “Black Is King” and IFC’s “Sherman’s Showcase Black History Month Spectacular” — since juries can choose to award all of the nominees, some of the nominees or none of the nominees. Scroll down for the complete list of 2021 juried winners.

“Love, Death & Robots” doesn’t make a terrible amount of sense as a title. For one thing, it’s repetitive: part of the inherent appeal of fictional robots is that they feast on our uncomfortable relationship with death. We’re usually either afraid of robots that could possibly kill us or attracted by the implication of a robot incapable of dying. And that’s all even before addressing the idea that love is an emotion tied to caring about someone so much that you’re afraid to live without them.
So where does that leave Netflix’s anthology collection of animated shorts, each ostensibly drawing on at least one of that trio? “Love, Death & Robots,” debuting an eight-episode Season 2 over two years after its first, continues to be a vague, mystifying catch-all. At the beginning of the documentary “Belushi,” author Tanner Colby is heard in a telephone conversation explaining to an interview subject that he’s talking to people about John Belushi because “No one’s ever done a real biography of John as a performer … I just want to give a full portrait of him as a human being.”
Those interviews from Colby, which were used for a 2005 book about the comedian and actor, are now at the heart of R.J. Cutler’s nonfiction film “Belushi,” which premiered at the Chicago International Film Festival on Wednesday and will also play at the AFI Fest before heading to Showtime on Nov. 22. And while you could say that the movie gets in the neighborhood of being a full portrait of the human being, it would be a stretch to call it a biography of John Belushi the performer – because at a certain point,...

All of the winning titles at the Romanian festival's 14th edition hail from Europe. The Animest International Animation Film Festival (4-13 October), the most popular festival organised in Romania's capital, Bucharest, has announced the winning titles of its 14th edition. Twenty-five-year-old Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis' Away (Latvia) won the Best Feature Award. The jury – consisting of Jürgen Hagler, the director of Austrian festival Ars Electronica, French director Sarah Van Den Boom and Estonian director Kaspar Jancis – favoured Away for its “balance between aesthetics and story”. Animest has been an Oscar-qualifying festival since 2017, which means that the winner of the Short Film competition is automatically considered for an Oscar nomination in the Best Animated Short Film category. This year, the winner was Tomek Popakul's Acid Rain (Poland). The jury, consisting of Canadian artist Robert Valley, French producer Richard Van Den Boom and Danish animator Sara Koppel, justified their...

In the week leading up to the 89th Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present a series of public programs celebrating this year’s nominees in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Foreign Language Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Animated and Live Action Short Film categories. All events will be held at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Wamg attended the annual AMPAS reception featuring the 2016 Oscar nominated films in the Animated and Live-Action Short Film categories. The program featured screenings of all the nominated films in these categories, plus an onstage discussion with the filmmakers.
The evening was hosted by director Tim Miller (Deadpool), who himself was nominated in the Animated Short category in 2005 (Gopher Broke). In his opening comments, a clearly emotional Miller spoke about shorts being, for most filmmakers, a labor of love rather than a means to getting awards and accolades.

MaryAnn’s quick take… My pick: “Pearl” [pictured], blending new Vr tech with old-fashioned characters and emotions, demonstrating storytelling possibilities that are beginning to open up. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

The lessons and legacies parents pass on to their children. The dangers of not living in the present… or living too much in the present. These are the motifs woven through the five short animated films nominated for the Oscar this year.
“Pearl” is a lovely sketch of the creative bond between a father and daughter.
My favorite, and the one I’d like to see win, is “Pearl” [IMDb], from Disney animator Patrick Osborne (Big Hero 6), who won in this category two years ago with his delightful “Feast.” A lovely sketch of a relationship between a father and daughter from their rough early...

The Oscar for best animated short film may not generate nearly as much attention as other categories, but it strikes an exciting contrast with the more traditional forms of storytelling found throughout other categories.
These films usually celebrate animators from around the world — including a number of up-and-comers — who apply a range of visual techniques and sophisticated concepts only possible in the animated medium. This year is entirely North American, but still features a lot of different approaches — and yet, ironically, the frontrunner in the category is a very familiar name: Pixar.

Blind Vaysha – Canada – 8 minutes
I did a double take upon hearing Theodore Ushev‘s name alongside his animated short Blind Vaysha during the Oscar nominations because I’ve watched his work progress the past five years. This Canadian by way of Bulgaria is a Toronto International Film Festival staple, a guy who alters his aesthetic with every new project. Those of you who haven’t been taking virtual reality seriously should start doing so right now. For animator/illustrator Robert Valley, the imperfections of life and art magnificently come together in his Oscar-nominated short, “Pear Cider and Cigarettes,” about his friendship with a self-destructive daredevil, who died despite reaching out to the filmmaker for help to get a liver transplant in China.
Valley first wrote about his childhood friend, Techno, in two self-published graphic novels. He was a gifted athlete but, even at a young age, drawn to danger like a moth to the flame. It’s a dark, tragic, passionate account of the American Dream gone bad and the idealism of loyalty and hero worship.

It’s been 16 years since Pixar won the Oscar for best animated short (Ralph Eggleston’s “For the Birds”). Wouldn’t it be fitting if Alan Barillaro’s fine-feathered “Piper” ended the drought? That would give Pixar four Oscars (alongside Geri’s Game” and “Tin Toy”).
However, “Piper” faces stiff competition, particularly from Theodore Ushev’s much darker “Blind Vaysha” from the National Film Board of Canada, which has earned a dozen Oscars.
The other three contenders range from Robert Valley’s bleak “Pear Cider and Cigarettes” (Vimeo’s first Oscar nom), the melancholy Western, “Borrowed Time” (made independently by Pixar’s Andrew Coats and Lou Hamou-Lhadj), and the introspective “Pearl” from Oscar winner Patrick Osborne (Disney’s “Feast”), the first Vr nominee from Google Spotlight Stories.

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.

Least of all by Metallica, who pay tribute to the deceased Motorhead bassist in their new video “Murder One.” The animated video, directed by Robert Valley, follows Kilmister’s career trajectory, from getting his mind blown by Jimi Hendrix to his ouster from space-rock band Hawkwind to his quest to form a band that would be the “dirtiest in the world.” “I still hear your thunder/the man in black/born to lose, no excuse/till the end/been living to win,” the lyrics declare, before the video closes with an image of...

I never caught any of these while they were airing, but Cartoon Network used to run shorts on Saturday mornings in a block called DC Nation that featured superhero characters from the DC Comics stable. Back in 2013, there were a handful of Wonder Woman entries created by artist Robert Valley, and now DC Collectibles is releasing a collectible statue by Jonathan Matthews based on Valley's art work. The super leggy version of Diana is straight from the '70s, and if you're a collector, I imagine this would be a coveted piece of art that would look great on a shelf.
