A joke that comes from truth is that one of the reasons for the popularity of Kung Fu movies on home cinema formats is the option to fast forward all the talky bits. With WellGoUSA bringing “Grandmaster of Kung Fu” to Blu ray this month comes an opportunity to watch a feature that tries to rectify that!

Can this Kung Fu League help save the day? Chinese distributor United Entertainment Partners released this Hong Kong action comedy last fall. This is not a new trailer, but we never featured it whenever it first appeared last year. So why not now...! (Thanks to a tip from Rob.) It looks crazy fun, and super cheesy, and perhaps some renewed interest in this will help it get an international release. Kung Fu League is a big-hearted comedy about a comic book artist nerd who "summons four legendary Kung Fu masters to learn the highest level of martial arts" so he can win the heart of a girl at his office. It's the latest film from Kung Fu Hustle director Jeffrey Lau, and already opened in theaters in China last year. Starring Ashin as Fei Ying Xiong, Kwok-Kwan Chan, Jay Chou, Madina Memet, Andy On, Yu-Hang To, and Vincent Zhao. The...

This June, return to the sunny sidewalks of Venice, California with your favorite man-child.
The Netflix comedy “Flaked” returns for its second season to pick up where it left off last season with Chip (Will Arnett) on the outs with everyone, except for his lady London (Ruth Kearney). What to do now that Jerry (Mark Boone Junior) has closed his store, his pal Dennis (David Sullivan) has parted ways with him “for good” and the hotel development is moving on? Could Chip possibly pull out more lies or will he face what he had wrought?

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Season 12, Episode 10, “Dennis’ Double Life.”]
Season 12 of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” has seen more than its fair share of bold developments. From Mac officially coming out of the closet to Dennis nearly being outed as a murderer, the latest episodes from the “Sunny” gang have felt more ambitious than previous seasons, and the show has been better for it.
So it’s fitting that the Season 12 finale not only ended with a shocking twist, but also featured a moment most fans never thought they’d see. First, let’s address the night’s biggest question mark: Is Dennis Reynolds gone for good?
Short answer: I don’t think so. Shorter answer: Maybe?
To recap, “Dennis’ Double Life” opened with the revelation that Dennis fathered a child with Mandy (Christine Woods), a woman he met after fleeing a flight to L.A. in order to avoid another woman he’d just slept with. (This...

Emotional wounds can manifest in different ways.
On Jane the Virgin Season 3 Episode 12, Jane started having panic attacks as she prematurely quit her job and ran into Michael's old colleague/friend. But as we learned, these panic attacks are nothing new.
Elsewhere in the episode, Petra and Rafael dealt with the fallout from Scott's newly discovered corpse, and Rogelio went on an apology tour.
Even though we are two episodes into the three-year time jump, I'm still adjusting to all the new developments. My biggest worry is still the display of the grieving process.
Thankfully we got more insight into the aftermath of Michael's death, but I can't help but feel a tad disconnected from Jane's journey over the last three years. Skipping over these formative years leaves a lot of unanswered questions about Jane's mindset.
I don't want to miss a single step of Jane's growth.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Lurid and squicky, Split treads water and keeps too many secrets on a dull path to the revelation of its self-satisfied cleverness. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of Shyamalan of late
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Three teenaged girls are kidnapped and held prisoner by a mentally ill man who suffers from dissociative identity disorder (Did); he has 23 distinct personalities. The potential problems inherent in such a scenario are obvious, particularly given how Hollywood typically approaches such issues… and Shyamalan is nowhere near the maverick he thinks he is. Split is just as squicky as you might expect. Girls are terrorized as a way to illustrate a man’s character and personality, even going so far as to cast him as a sort of victim. Mental illness is depicted as a cause of violent behavior,...

When Morris Dennis returned to Nashville, Tennessee, from his time in the Navy during World War II, his seabag contained a “slightly burned” German flag, a 40 mm shell, a newspaper with the headline “Germany Quits,” his uniform, a pair of work pants, and a pair of wooden shoes.
In a profile in The Tennessean, Dennis, 90, recounted that soon after landing at Normandy on D-Day in 1944, he encountered a young French girl who waved him over and spoke to him in perfect English.
“My grandparents are starving, and I’m trying to take care of them,” the little girl said, according to Dennis.

Southern Charm's third season has seen its fair share of drama - from Craig Conover's ill-timed confrontation of Whitney Sudler-Smith to the dinner party that ended before the salads were even served. But one thing that was consistent? Landon Clements' and Kathryn Dennis' ongoing feud. In a sneak peek at part 1 of the reunion, tensions are just as high as when cameras left the battling beauties at the Founder's Day Ball in the finale. Clements admits that she regrets and apologizes for not inviting Dennis to Shep Rose's birthday party, but Dennis doesn't let things lie there.

NBC’s Game of Silence made some noise with what would be its series finale. Did the Quitman boys exact justice for the warden’s past crimes?

Though Jackson & Co. seemed to have handed Detective Winters and her FBI pal a closed case — having found Petey’s grave on land purchased by Carroll after the youth’s suspicious death — Carroll deflected the charges by throwing Red (vanished) and Bobby (dead) under the bus. Still, Carroll is spooked by the close call, so he drives to the ranch to prepare for his big speech.

When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.
I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.
I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.
Anyway, thank you...

2012's "Hotel Transylvania" was the monster mash that turned into a graveyard smash, bringing in nearly $400 million worldwide on a relatively small (for an animated feature, anyway) budget. Thanks to director Genndy Tartakovsky, the film emphasized physical humor and the innate charm of its starry cast (which included Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, David Spade, and Steve Buscemi) over an overtly structured, cloying format. Audiences and animation fans responded wholeheartedly (a remarkable feat, especially considering how many horror-themed animated films were released that year), and, later this year, fans of the franchise will be able to check into "Hotel Transylvania 2." Seeing as we were counted amongst the fans of the first film, we couldn't be more thrilled to bring you exclusive images and a new trailer for the film, along with an interview with Tartakovsky himself.

Between certain producers, the subject matter, the controversial depiction of Muslims, the Emmy wins and the genuine thrills that come from each episode, it is not original to discuss the similarities between Homeland and 24. “13 Hours in Islamabad,” which comprises 45 of the best minutes of Showtime’s Emmy-winning series so far, is as close as the thriller has gotten to the territory of its network precursor. Regardless, even with many similarities, the series still triumphs at following its own creative game. (Also, you wouldn’t hear the line, “I’m trying to kill the motherfucker who’s trying to kill us!” on 24, due to network constraints.)
The episode is divided into two halves. For the first 22 minutes – which take place in a form of real time that quickly conjures memories of the ticking-clock drama – the American embassy is under attack from Haqqani and his radicalized thugs. They reach the hidden stairwells...

Back in the Game, Season 1, Episode 1, “Pilot“
Directed by Robb & Mark Cullen
Written by John Requa & Glenn Ficarra
Airs Wednesdays at 8:30pm Est on ABC
Following the success of HBO’s Eastbound and Down and FX/Fxx’s The League, it was only a matter of time before more sports-driven sitcoms emerged. The Back In The Game’s pilot isn’t the strongest or the most inspiring, but it’s certainly not the worst either. The premise of the show is quite promising because it’s focused on likeable, underdog type of characters instead of just obnoxious men (unlike some of the other new shows). Although there are a few horrible and sexist men present, the pilot suggests that the rest of the series will be spent exploring how our female leads challenge and outsmart them. Although that’s the driving force of the show, a large part of...

The Legend is Born: Ip Man is a 2010 Hong Kong semi-biographical martial arts film about the early life of Ip Man (also spelled as Yip Man) and his journey to becoming a Wing Chun master whilst resisting the influence of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce, aims to dominate China and secure its vast raw resources. Ip is probably most famous in the West as the teacher of legendary martial arts actor Bruce Lee.
The film starts with a montage of images and banners from the early 1900s, of the increasingly nationalistic Chinese resisting pressure from Japan who in 1915 issued the Twenty-One Demands to extort political and commercial privilege from China after the First Sino-Japanese War. This won’t mean much to casual viewers, but even...

Here's a fresh batch of worthy, geek-friendly crowdfunding projects that have caught our eye this week...
The best part of putting together this weekly crowdfunding column? While trawling through the dozens of ideas that appear online every day, we stumble on all kinds of weird and wonderful things.
Some ideas are semi-practical - a new kind of flip-flop with soles made from astro turf, for people who want to feel as though they're walking on grass all day long - while others are downright strange - such as a set of tabletop gaming figures shaped neat like little human backsides.
Some ideas are commercial and enticing enough to sale past their funding goal - a zombie Lego Batman mash-up animation's already doing well - while others are rather more niche - we spotted a strip poker text adventure, which has, unsurprisingly, attracted rather less interest so far.

It was double trouble for the final four on All-Star Celebrity Apprentice tonight as two celebs were fired. But they didn’t even get to take part in the usual phony job interview. Instead they were summoned back to the Boardroom to be disposed of by Donald Trump without taking part in any sort of task. Almost Christmas, the latest film from Junebug director Phil Morrison, helps to explain the process of how all those Christmas trees get to the street corners of Brooklyn and why they cost so much. It does indeed take a lot to get them there, as we discover from a pair of tree-transporting frenenemies from Québec, played by Paul Giamatti and Paul Rudd. Once you get past the fact that these guys are probably the only two Québecois who don’t speak French, the actors win in their roles. However, the film is filled with pacing issues as well as comic situations and characters that just fall completely flat. Giamatti plays Dennis, a guy who has just completed a four-year prison sentence for a botched heist. He heads to the home of ex-wife Therese (Amy Landecker) to see their young daughter (Tatyana Richaud), only to discover that she’s been told he died of cancer. He...

We’ve all experienced the uncomfortable situation of going out to eat and spotting other friends at the restaurant. Do you go talk to them? Do you have to join them if you do despite wanting to follow your plans of eating who you came with? Do they feel bad that you didn’t invite them, and wait a second… why didn’t they invite you? Yeah, it’s awkward all around, but it’s a situation that most of us have found a way to deal with and have a minimal amount of discomfort in the progress. The Gang Dines Out shows that the characters on It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, have never had to deal with that situation before.
It makes sense that they would be so uncomfortable. After all, when was the last time the Gang was split up without there being a reason for it?...

You’ll Like My Mother: Matthiesen’s Debut a Gentle Giant
Director Mads Matthiesen developed his 2007 short film Dennis into his feature debut, Teddy Bear, a quiet character study about a shy professional body builder looking for love. At times generating a beautiful quiet melancholy, the film ultimately exudes a determined, laconic ambiance, one that drifts it through a running time like an overly familiar tune, one that holds your attention even though you already know exactly how it’s going to play out.
Dennis (Kim Kold), a 38 year old body builder, lives alone with his mother, Ingrid (Elsebeth Steentoft) in a suburb outside of Copenhagen. It’s immediately apparent that his petite mother is a domineering and controlling woman, exasperated and upset that her hulking son would go to the movies with friends and not leave his cell phone on for when she calls. The mellow, Herculean man assuages her as best he can,...

Backed by three strong Kung Fu performers - Vincent Zhao (aka Chiu Man Chuk), Dennis To and Louis Fan - Wu Dang (大武当之天地密码) is the first martial arts film that captures the treasure of Wu Dang Kung Fu and the mysticism of Ying Yang. The director is Patrick Leung (Twin Effects 2) with Corey Yuen (Shaolin) serving as action choreographer. Also in the cast is Mini Yang and Xu Jiao.In early Republican China, rumors were going around about the treasure in Wudang Mountain. An American conspirator took his well-trained kung fu daughter to Wudang by sponsoring a Taoist martial arts competition, to steal the treasure. Out of expectation, a disciple represented Wudang to compete with other martial arts masters for the championship. During the competition,...

Coffee, the Musical
NYC Coffee and Tea Festival
All serious theatrical works go through many stages on the road to a full-fledged production. Opening night audiences have it easy: They just sit back, watch, and listen. Prior to the first notes of the overture and that moment of “curtain up,” a production team has worked intensely hard, with many tryouts for audience response, presentations for backers, a myriad of rewrites and adjustments applied to the score, dialog, and blocking over many months (and, not uncommonly, a number of years). I kept this in mind while viewing the premiere of the first act of Coffee, the Musical, an engaging and tuneful work-in-progress presented this past February at the NYC Coffee and Tea Festival.
It appears that director/playwright/actor Robert Galinsky -- co-creator of the show with Greg Kotcher, along with his talented production team, have a hit musical in the works.

Warlord Lam (Sammo Hung), is not a leader of great vision, but having a patriotic heart, stands firm in his own beliefs, despite the several solicitations and temptations from Japan.
The only ‘paradise’ within the region is ‘Lucky Town’, the one place where no one dared to attack. New 'Paranormal Activity 3' delivered pretty good thrills and abrupt, weird ending. Paramount Pictures delivered their third installment of the horror/thriller "Paranormal Activity" franchise this weekend. I just checked it out,and I thought it was ok. It delivered some pretty good "edge of your seat" thrills, coupled with a very freaky, abrupt ending, which I'm still trying to figure out. All I know, is it left some people very dead. The movie stars: Katie Featherston, Sprague Grayden, and Lauren Bittner. The new flick went back to 1988 when Katie and Kristi were just little girls. There mother Julie was married to a wedding photographer named Dennis who liked to video tape everything. Everything seemed nice and happy at first, but like all these movies, things quickly changed for the worse, starting with their first ghostly experience. It was an earthquake-like shaking of the house that freaked everyone out.

Whether it was intentional or not, the fact the first 30 or so minutes of Paranormal Activity 3 are comprised of tedious and generic jump scares actually works in the film's favor. Tedium soon leads to an effective final 30 minutes as the origin story to this supernatural franchise gets down to its most gnarliest. Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman created some effective and tense moments in their faux documentary Catfish in 2010 and as a result prove to be a solid duo to take over the Paranormal franchise following 2010's lackluster second installment.
As a big fan of Oren Peli's Paranormal Activity I was quite disappointed in the sequel, a film that showed little invention, relying on dogs and babies in peril to tell its story. Sure, they work, but it's a storytelling method that plays on our weaker human emotions. To scare an audience with as little as possible is a different story.

Herman Yau's prequel to the excellent Ip Man films starring Donnie Yen is currently making its way through theaters in the U.S. The Legend Is Born: Ip Man focuses on the younger-day exploits of the real life Wing Chun grandmaster. This time, Yu-hang To plays the title chartacter, but many of the supporting case from the first movies returns, including Sammo Hung and Siu-wong Fan. Sammo and martial arts legend Yuen Biao have a fight scene (which is reason enough to want to see the movie) and 86-year-old Ip Chun, Ip Man's real life son, even makes an appearance.

The Legend is Born – Ip Man is a semi-biographical martial arts film based on the events in the early life of Wing Chun master Yip Man (also spelled as Ip Man). The film’s story is not related to Wilson Yip’s Ip Man starring Donnie Yen. Instead the film focuses on Yip Man’s early life and the story of how he learned the martial arts style of Wing Chun. In contrast, Ip Man and Ip Man 2 which focus on the events in his life that took place during the Second Sino-Japanese War and after he moved to Hong Kong. The film was directed by one of the most prolific directors in Hong Kong, Herman Yau and stars Dennis To in the title role as Yip Man. Look out for the special appearance by Ip Chun, son of Yip Man, who plays Leung Bik in the film, as well...

Herman Yau (The Untold Story, Turning Point, Gong Tau) is one of the most prolific directors in Hong Kong. His last film Legend Is Born: IP Man, which tells the story of a young Ip Man, was well-received despite not having Donnie Yen in the cast. Yau's latest film, Woman Knight Of Mirror Lake, will be released in China in August during the last part of their summer season. The central character of Woman Knight Of Mirror Lake is Qiu Jin, a real-life revolutionary, feminist and poet during China's Qing Dynasty. The cast includes many familiar names such as Huang Yi (who plays Qiu Jin), Dennis To Yu-hang (who played Ip Man in The Legend Is Born: IP Man), Rose Chan, Pat Ha, Anthony...

On July 22nd, you have the chance to see a film that has been getting a lot of great press, has been a smash hit at several film festivals, and has probably escaped your attention. A Little Help features Jenna Fischer in a role that has had more people talk it up to me than anything in at least the last three or four years, and if nothing else, has the best trailer I've seen in quite a while.
Check out the long synopsis below, and don't miss the trailer. For more info - http://alittlehelpthemovie.com/
It’s a movie for everyone whose life has been thrown off-course, out of whack, or simply not turned out the way they planned it. In other words, it’s a movie for everyone, period.
Set in suburban Long Island in the summer of 2002, with the psychic wounds of 9/11 still fresh, A Little Help...

Everyone who’s been to the Fantasia Film Festival here in Montreal knows two things: one, it’s awesome; two, there are an insane, perhaps even impossible, number of features to choose from. Inevitably, some movies will live up to or even exceed the hype, while others fizzle out upon actual viewing. Every year I make a list of movies that, based on various factors of my own choosing, are as close to “safe bets” as you’re likely to find at a festival this varied and wild. Here’s what made the cut this year:
13 Assassins (Director’s Cut)
Takahi Miike’s samurai epic has received glowing reviews the world ’round, and it’s finally come to Montreal a couple months after its limited Us run. Said to be both doggedly old-fashioned and replete with the sort of hyper-stylized violence Miike made his name on, it’s the more...

I had the privilege of meeting Dennis McDonald at a small sci-fi convention (SoonerCon) roughly three years ago in Oklahoma City. After picking up his “13 Nightmares” collection of short stories, this writer had me hooked. The imagination and power of his story telling grabbed me by the throat and did not let go until I was finished reading. Then he had the audacity to come out with his first full-length novel, a fierce and terrifying lycanthrope tale entitled “Ebon Moon” and it left me wanting more from this writer.
I was able to convince Dennis to let me ask him a few questions about his past, present and future plans.
How old where you when the writing bug hit you?
When I was thirteen years old and attending junior high back in 1968. I remember carrying around a binder stuffed with the starts of dozens of stories.

In 2009 The King of Queens and Ned and Stacey exec producer Michael J. Weithorn wrote and directed his first feature, called A Little Help. He scored in a couple ways with the cast, which features Jenna Fischer along with Kim Coates, Lesley Ann Warren, Aida Turturro and Chris O'Donnell. But the film turned out as a classically middle of the road indie drama that played at a couple festivals (starting with the Seattle Ff in May 2010) and then sat around waiting for a distributor to throw it some love. Now Freestyle Releasing and Secret Handshake are finally getting the film into theaters this June, but a quick look at the new trailer will clue you in on what has taken so long. This might be one of the most difficult types of films to get right. This trailer isn't terrible, but there's also nothing in it to suggest the movie is very good.

The ability to appreciate Donnie Yen punching people really, really fast in the face is what makes life worth living, if you ask me. Yen does just that in “Ip Man 2″, which co-stars Sammo Hung, who also acts as the film’s action choreographer. New shiny poster for the film due out later this month in Hong Kong below. A sequel to the successful “Ip Man” starring Donnie Yen, “Ip Man 2″ follows Ip Man (Yen) as he immigrates to Hong Kong in 1949 after the struggles against the Japanese in the first film. In Hong Kong, Ip Man attempts to propagate his discipline of Wing Chun martial arts to the world, but is hampered by jealous martial arts rivals and the oppressive British. Starring Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung Kam-Bo, Darren Shahlavi, Siu-Wong Fan, Lynn Hung, Ka Tung Lam, Xiaoming Huang, Kent Cheng, Yu-Hang To , Amber Chia, Stefan Morawietz, and directed by Wilson Yip.

Can’t get enough Donnie Yen punching people really, really fast in the face? You’re in luck. There are two behind-the-scenes “production diaries” on Yen’s upcoming “Ip Man 2″ (via Kung Fu Cinema) to dig your teeth into. The martial arts film will co-star Sammo Hung, who also does double duty as action choreographer. From the looks of these two diaries, they should probably give Hung a co-director’s credit, since he probably does just as much work directing the thing as credited director Wilson Yip. Starring Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung Kam-Bo, Darren Shahlavi, Siu-Wong Fan, Lynn Hung, Ka Tung Lam, Xiaoming Huang, Kent Cheng, Yu-Hang To , Amber Chia, Stefan Morawietz, and directed by Wilson Yip. Ip Man punches away in the Summer. Get more images and videos at our “Ip Man 2″ preview page.
