Welcome to this review of Ring Of Honor’s/New Japan Pro Wrestling’s G1 SuperCard, which emanated from Madison Square Garden in one of the great moments of wrestling history. I’m Nathan Favel and right here on Nerdly, we have one of the biggest events in wrestling history to discuss, so let’s do so.
Match #1: The 30-Man Honor Rambo: Winner – Kenny King
My Opinion: 3 out of 5 – This was less about great wrestling and more about big surprises. The action was of a certain quality, which should neither condone nor condemn the match itself. In what may have set the precedent for the card, the Japanese wrestlers were the best thing here. Overall, this match got the crowd excited, which is just fine.

Nearly a year and a half after breaking his neck due to a botched Styles Clash, former WWE Superstar Naofumi “Yoshi Tatsu” Yamamoto is almost ready to return to the ring.
In a statement released to PWInsider, Yamamoto announced that he will be cleared to compete next month and is accepting independent bookings for April and beyond.
After being released from his WWE contract in June of 2014, Yamamoto made a triumphant return to New Japan Pro Wrestling, helping Hiroshi Tanahashi fend off Bullet Club interference en route to defeating Aj Styles for the Iwgp Heavyweight Championship. Taking the name “Yoshitatsu,” Yamamoto wrestled Styles in a one-on-one match at November’s Power Struggle event, but the returning star tucked his head while taking the Styles Clash, breaking two bones in his neck. He continued to compete for nearly two weeks afterward before realizing the severity of his injury.

One down, one to go. After The New Beginning in Niigata delivered a solid series of fights, it was down to Niigata to well and truly blow our minds…and that it certainly did with a much higher standard of wrestling and storytelling on the whole. The Iwgp Intercontinental Championship main event between Kenny Omega and Hiroshi Tanahashi more than lived up to the hype, and pretty much every title match hit the markers it needed to.
From the stiff brand of wrestling any Njpw fan both expects and demands to the ridiculous eccentricities from overzealous fans and everything in-between, there was plenty to be both entertained and bemused by here, not least that we may have the very first ever tweet sent from underneath a ring during a live wrestling pay-per-view. That’s history-making right there…

Following the announcement that Iwgp Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura was departing Njpw for WWE, it was announced that Nakamura would be vacating the title. The announcement wasn’t without some controversy, as most expected Nakamura to drop the belt to Kenny Omega, the obvious Ic champion in waiting.
As far as New Japan was concerned, though, they didn’t want a Nakamura vs. Omega match to happen where the outcome was a foregone conclusion. Instead, they made the decision to strip Nakamura of the belt and decide the champion at a later date.
The match to determine the new champion occurred Sunday at New Japan’s The New Beginning In Niigata event. Former Iwgp Heavyweight Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi, who headlined WrestleKingdom 10 just over a month ago, took on the new leader of the Bullet Club, Kenny Omega, for the vacant Iwgp Intercontinental Championship.

Whilst he may not have officially signed with WWE as of yet, Shinsuke Nakamura’s first match in a WWE ring has already been announced. At the next Nxt: TakeOver special, Nakamura will face off against Sami Zayn in something of a dream match for pro wrestling enthusiasts. It promises to be something truly special.
Nakamura’s arrival in WWE is a genuinely big deal in the world of professional wrestling. He was one of the biggest stars in the history of New Japan Pro Wrestling, making up one third of the big three of the company along with Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kazuchika Okada. Those two may have continually fought over the Iwgp World Heavyweight Championship recently, but it is undoubtedly Nakamura who has the greatest potential to appeal to western audiences.

Iwgp Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada was in tears at his friend and stablemate Shinsuke Nakamura’s New Japan farewell show last month, but he has absolutely no plans to join Nakamura stateside.
According to Twitter user enuhito (@enuhito_eng), tomorrow’s edition of Japanese publication Weekly Pro Wrestling contains a vow from Okada: “I will never go to WWE.”
Last year, Dave Meltzer reported that WWE scouts were interested in all three of New Japan’s top stars – Okada, Nakamura, and perennial company ace Hiroshi Tanahashi. Tanahashi was doubtful to make the jump due to his age and status in Japan, while Nakamura’s journey has been well-documented. Okada – who turned 28 last November and is already among the best workers in the world – seemed like a natural fit for WWE, but he expressed an interest in staying with New Japan to help lead the company for the next several years.

Shinsuke Nakamura is on his way to World Wrestling Entertainment, and as such has been stripped of his Iwgp Intercontinental Title. This all but confirms his departure, as performers being stripped of titles outside of injury is a rarity in New Japan Pro Wrestling. In fact, this is the first time that the Intercontinental Title has been vacated since it was introduced in 2011.
The belt was initially a prop to get Mvp over, as he beat Toru Yano in a tournament final to become the first champion. Interestingly enough, in the first round of said tournament Mvp defeated the man who currently stands atop of Njpw, Kazuchika Okada. Since Mvp’s run there have been a total of seven champions, including Hirooki Goto, Hiroshi Tanahashi and Bad Luck Fale.
Unlike WWE, this secondary championship isn’t really secondary at all. Shinsuke Nakamura began his first reign in July 2012 by defeating Hirooki Goto,...

2015 is almost in the books, and no matter what perspective one’s wrestling fandom takes, there were no shortage of huge matches by which to remember the year.
WWE fans were thrilled as Seth Rollins robbed Brock Lesnar of the WWE Championship at the climax of Lesnar’s WrestleMania main event against Roman Reigns, then couldn’t turn away as Lesnar and The Undertaker split PPV matches later in the year. Kenta Kobashi might not be a name known to many people, but to those who’ve seen his matches or read about him on various wrestling forums, they know just how awesome this man was during his in-ring career. Between his 1988 debut and his 2013 retirement, Kobashi put on more amazing performances and made more jaws drop than any other wrestler alive.
As such, Kenta Kobashi is the greatest wrestler of the modern era.
Yes, this is a bold statement to make, especially when you consider those other wrestlers who might also be worthy of that title: Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, Bret Hart, Kurt Angle, Daniel Bryan, Cm Punk, Aj Styles, Hiroshi Tanahashi, etc. However, during his twenty-five-year career, Kobashi managed to provide the audience with some of the most impressive wrestling on the planet, and he did this on a consistent basis. New Japan Pro Wrestling seems to be on quite a roll lately. In the past year or so, they’ve announced partnerships with both Ring of Honor and Jeff Jarrett’s Global Force Wrestling. Furthermore, they’ve been airing their major events in the United States via iPPV.
On August 10th, New Japan wrapped up their annual G1 Climax tournament — or Grade One Climax — which began on July 21st. This year was the 24th incarnation of the prestigious event — although Njpw held annual tournaments beginning in 1971 under different monikers. The shows consistently draw sold out crowds and mainstream Japanese press for each night of the event.
As per usual, this year’s event featured fantastic wrestling from all involved — including well-known American stars like Shelton Benjamin, Doc Gallows, Davey Boy Smith Jr., and current Iwgp Heavyweight Champion, Aj Styles. The tournament also featured well-known Japanese stars Satoshi Kojima,...
