Italian-French co-production “Heads or Tails?” (“Testa o Croce?”) claimed Eurimages Co-Production Development Award at Rotterdam’s CineMart on Tuesday.
Directed by Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis, and set in the 1890s, it seduced jurors Ilse Ronteltap, Mira Staleva and Konstantina Stavrianou with its retro-flavored story of lovers on the run. “It brings us [closer] to the legends that we rarely see nowadays,” said Staleva. “It’s about violence, mystery, freedom, injustice and friendship.”
“Billi and Rosa decide to escape, but many people are chasing them. Then he becomes a hero to some, an icon. Which, obviously, goes straight to his head. The story is really about her own path: her journey to freedom,” Alessio Rigo de Righi told Variety following his win.

This text, generously provided by curator Elhum Shakerifar, is adapted from the introduction to a zine co-edited by Faye Harvey and published on occasion of "Poetry in Motion: Contemporary Iranian Cinema," running April 3–24, 2019 at the Barbican in London. Mitra Farahani's Fifi Howls from Happiness is showing April 8 - May 7, 2019 on Mubi in many countries around the world.A few years ago, I attended the Tokyo International Film Festival, where a handful of Iranian films received their World Premieres. The first one I attended was by a debut director. His film told the story of a musician whose life ended suddenly, abruptly, whilst he was still in his youth. It was an unfettered reflection on the greater, unanswerable questions in life. When the Q&A began, the first question was about a scene in which the young musician had visited a man to borrow an instrument. This man was portrayed as overweight,...

The Lesson by co-directors Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov was the big winner at this year’s Sofia International Film Festival in Bulgaria.
The duo’s feature debut became the second Bulgarian feature in Siff’s 19-year history to receive the international jury’s Grand Prix after Dragomir Sholev’s Shelter in 2011.
The Lesson also picked up the Audience Award, the Fipresci International Critics’ Prize and the award for the Best Bulgarian Feature Film.
Accepting the award, Valchanov pointed to the importance of the Sofia Meetings where The Lesson had originally been pitched and said that this event should be ¨an example¨ to the Bulgarian state to develop a long-term and sustainable film policy for the future.
The sentiment was echoed by international jury president Stephan Komanderev (The Judgement) when he presented the ¨Sofia City Of Film¨ Grand Prix to the young directors.
