Robert Rodriguez isn’t against bringing original Spy Kids stars Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara back for another film. But the director says the time between the latest installment, Armageddon, and 2011’s Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World, meant that it was “important to just start the franchise fresh.”
The filmmaker spoke about his decision to launch the latest Spy Kids chapter with a completely new family — and new set of leading child stars — in a new interview with Yahoo Entertainment.
“I wanted to re-establish a new family,” he said of the choice to cast Connor Esterson and Everly Carganilla in the new Netflix film, out Friday. “Because it’d been so long [since 2011’s All the Time in the World], it was important to just start the franchise fresh and then go from there.”

It was about halfway through Natalie Morales’ Plan B (her directorial debut if you go by theatrical release date considering her festival title Language Lessons from earlier this year has yet to secure one) that Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg’s producer credits came into focus because it was there that the parallels to Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle became undeniable. If actor-turned-director Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart was created in the Superbad vein, Joshua Levy and Prathiksha Srinivasan’s script was certainly drawn from that of the Cobra Kai showrunners’ breakthrough comedy. And it’s not just because they share having two non-white stars on a drug- and sex-fueled adventure in search of a holy grail. What connects them most is the heartfelt and inclusive ride-or-die friendship at their cores.

“Plan B” is a girls-behaving-badly all-night-long road-trip comedy that’s The film made me realize that almost every time a movie like this one comes along that has young women at the center of it, it’s been an independent film. In the randy teens + binge party = escalating trainwreck genre of high delinquent comedy, that’s a crucial distinction, because it means that the films bypass a certain mainstream blandification. “Plan B” will be released May 28 on Hulu, and it’s clear that the relevant executive note-givers did not see fit to demand that the movie lose certain jokes outrageous enough to hit viewers like a comic shock wave.
Whereas a comedy like “Superbad,” great as it is, was able to draw on films ranging from “American Graffiti” to “License to Drive,” “Plan B” has a vastly shorter pedigree, one that stretches back to maybe “Bachelorette” (2012), a scabrously anti-romantic comedy...

"My 24 hour window is closing!" Hulu has debuted the first official trailer for Plan B, a new comedy in the vein of Superbad, the second feature film directed by actress Natalie Morales (following her feature debut Language Lessons). This looks like good fun. After a regrettable first sexual encounter, a straight-laced high school student and her slacker best friend have 24 hours to hunt down a Plan B pill in America's heartland. Kuhoo Verma and Victoria Moroles star as friends Sunny and Lupe, and the cast includes Michael Provost, Mason Cook, Josh Ruben, Hana Hayes, and Bobby Tisdale. This looks like the next great modern teen comedy after Lady Bird and Booksmart. Let's roll! I'm ready for some Plan B heartland humor. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Natalie Morales' Plan B, direct from Hulu's YouTube: The best trips are never planned. The cancellation of Speechless was a “gut wrenching” decision for ABC boss Karey Burke.
The ABC Entertainment president revealed that it was a tough decision that caused a lot of “anguish” and also hit hard given that creator and exec producer Scott Silveri is a former producing partner of hers.
“There was a lot of anguish for me and all of us at ABC. We love Speechless, it was a very tough decision. Scott Silveri is a former producing partner of mine and it was not without great gut wrenching consideration that we ultimately made that call. We looked at a lot of factors and ultimately it came down to numbers and feeling like we could shore up the night more strongly with Fresh Off The Boat,” she said at Disney’s press upfronts.

The bloodbath at ABC continues!
Comedies Speechless and Splitting Up Together are the latest cancellations at the Alphabet network, it has been announced.
Speechless lasted three seasons before the plug was pulled. Moving to a new night this season, it tumbled almost 60 percent in the demo.
In live + same day metrics, it is averaged 2.3 million viewers and a 0.5 rating. It did get a minor bump with delayed viewing factored in.
Related: The Cool Kids Canceled at Fox
It was ABC's least-watched scripted series, so the cancellation is not completely surprising. ABC did own the show, so many thought it stood a decent shot at being renewed.
However, it seems the network is going in a different direction.
Speechless starred Minnie Driver, John Ross Bowie, Cedric Yarbrough, Mason Cook, Micah Fowler, and Kyla Kenedy.
As for Splitting Up Together, the rom-com was not owned by ABC and was pulling in anemic ratings all season long.

Minnie Driver says ABC’s cancellation of her series Speechless today “feels rather sad,” but she believes the show made a positive impact on the “conversation about family, disability and love.”
“Well now listen,” Driver tweeted this afternoon after ABC announced the show would not be back after Season 3. “Speechless has been cancelled and it feels rather sad. However, I truly believe we have left this conversation about family, disability and love in a better place than we found it. I love all the people I worked with on it, and all of you who loved our show too.”
Micah Fowler, who plays Driver’s son Jj on the show (both actor and character have cerebral palsy), called the run “the greatest three years of my life.”
“Thank you to all the fans, cast and crew who made this show so special,” he tweeted. “It was the greatest three years of my life.

ABC has silenced Speechless, canceling the comedy after three seasons, TVLine has confirmed. The short-lived series followed the everyday exploits of the Dimeo family — most notably J.J., a sharp-witted teenager living with cerebral palsy.

The cast also included Cedric Yarbrough as J.J.’s “voice,” Kenneth Clements. [Update: Driver reacts to cancellation.]

ABC has rendered Speechless silent today with the Minnie Driver-led series canceled after three seasons. The cancellation is not a surprise, given that Speechless was ABC’s lowest-rated series.
Co-produced by now corporate siblings 20th Century Fox TV and ABC Studios, Speechless starred Driver and John Ross Bowie as the parents of Jj (Micah Fowler), who has cerebral palsy, and his siblings Dylan (Kyla Kennedy) and Ray (Mason Cook). Cedric Yarbrough also starred as Jj’s aide, who serves as his voice.
“It’s telling a story that hasn’t been told on television before,” Driver said during its first panel at Deadline’s The Contenders Emmys a couple years ago. “You genuinely get the after-school special treatment with disability, and that’s not accurate and also annoying. … All of those that feel excluded would like to feel included, and I think the show’s laughter will make you feel included.

“Speechless” has been canceled after three seasons at ABC.
The single-camera comedy centered on the middle class Dimeo family. Maya Dimeo (Minnie Driver) is a mother who will do anything for her children, especially eldest son Jj (Micah Fowler), who has cerebral palsy. Although she is attempting to get her own business of accessible clothing off the ground, she is also deeply focused on Jj’s future, as he graduated from high school in the third season finale and wants to pursue film school.
In addition to Driver and Fowler, “Speechless” starred Cedric Yarbrough, John Ross Bowie, Mason Cook and Kyla Kenedy. Scott Silveri created the series and served as showrunner; Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar also executive produced. The series was produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television and ABC Studios.

By mid-May, the broadcast networks must make some tough calls as to which series will return for the 2019-20 season, and which… won’t.
As that deadline draws near, TVLine is singling out a few “bubble” shows and sizing up their prospects — based in large part on creative strides (and stumbles) and future potential, but also with a requisite nod to cold, hard numbers.
Next up is a comedy about a family dealing with its eldest child’s cerebral palsy… or, rather, that eldest child dealing with their well-intentioned overprotectiveness.

“I think it’s time I make a statement on disability,” Jj Dimeo (Micah Fowler) announces early in this week’s episode of the ABC sitcom Speechless. This is something of a surprise from both Jj and the show itself, both of which have worked very hard to keep Jj from being defined solely by his cerebral palsy. The first episode of “Speechless” Season 2 starts with a flurry. Part of the action comes from the plot, as the Dimeo family wakens to the startling revelation that their house has been tented for fumigation. With Robert Rodriguez behind the camera, at least.
Everyone hates remakes. As film-critic people, we are obligated to hate remakes and reboots ever more. Remember Ben-Hur with Morgan Freeman? Remember Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes (2001)? But I’m can’t help but get excited about the remake of John Carpenter’s Escape from New York (1981) that 20th Century Fox is starting to get the ball actually rolling on. For one, Carpenter remains on hand as executive producer, which kind of makes the director and now-prolific rock star look like a father watching kid’s play with his old toys. Carpenter hasn’t done anything, movie-wise, in almost decade so it’s nice to see that he’ll be somewhere behind a camera sometime soon. Last year, he announced that he’d be also be on hand to help helm currently-hip Blumhouse Production’s first take on the ninth Halloween movie. So...
