Luke Shanahan’s Rabbit is the latest in a long list of films that attempt to explore the connection between twins, which has long been a fascination with filmmakers over the years. Think of it as a classier version of I Know Who Killed Me with a little bit of The Vanishing thrown in for good measure (I’m sure the producers don’t […]...

As a longtime fan of Australian cinema, I will be the first to admit that as I watched the opening scene of Luke Shanahan’s Rabbit, I thought I could put my finger precisely on the type of cinematic experience that was coming my way. And boy, was I wrong. My favorite types of films are the ones that keep me guessing, or give me something I haven’t seen before, and Rabbit delivers that in spades. Much more than just a psychological horror movie, Shanahan’s latest is a beautiful celebration of Euro cinema from the ’70s, yet it still feels wholly steeped in this twisted modern reality where nothing is as it seems, and the horrors awaiting viewers go much deeper than just jump scares and gore.

Luke Shanahan's feature debut, Rabbit is beginning to reach out into the international film festival circuit. In the coming weeks Rabbit will play at Fantastic Fest and it was just picked up by Sitges in Spain. Almost a year after her identical twin’s disappearance, 25 year old medical student Maude Ashton is still haunted by visions of her violent abduction. Convinced she is still alive, Maude follows the clues to a derelict caravan park where she discovers her fate is intrinsically linked to that of her sister, while the entire experiment is controlled by a ‘secret society’ that likes to watch. If Maude wants to see her sister again she’ll have to go through with a series of strange experiments. Screen Anarchy is pleased...

If Get Out was transplanted to Australia and had its sense of humor confiscated by customs, the result would surely look something like Rabbit. Making its debut in Melbourne but filmed in the leafy suburbs and surrounds of Adelaide, this debut feature from director Luke Shanahan is arresting to look at but exhaustingly portentous, with hometown stars Adelaide Clemens (Rectify) and Alex Russell (the upcoming Only the Brave) gamely committing to the helmer's own script, which withholds any sense of narrative clarity until the closing minutes.

Okay, so in the four loved-themed films from Australia’s iteration of Tropfest featured below, there’s self-amputation, a killer boyfriend, two somewhat creepy kids, and an Amour-style old couple. But deep down, all of the films are about love — and as we all know, sometimes it hurts, literally. In honor of Valentine’s Day (a holiday with somewhat bloody beginnings — St. Valentine himself was supposedly a martyr after all), we have four short film entries that you can watch below: Marry Me, The Mistake, Boo, and The News.
