"Twenty years ago, Brian Keene's The Rising was credited with 'revitalizing the horror fiction genre' and 'giving zombies an upgrade'. This is that return.

For over two decades, author Brian Keene has given fans stories filled with zombies (The Rising series), massive man-eating earthworms (the Earthworm Gods series), an occult detective (the Levi Stotzfus series), a well-meaning serial killer, and numerous other tales of horror, dark fantasy and crime fiction.
A World Horror Grandmaster and two-time Bram Stoker Award winner, Keene has also written comic books (including works for DC and Marvel), worked on the board of the Scares That Care charity, acted as showrunner for the audio series Silverwood: The Door, and hosted the popular podcast The Horror Show with Brian Keene.
Now, Keene is embarking on the biggest move of his career – launching his own publishing imprint, Manhattan On Mars Press. To discuss this new and significant development for the writer, Mr. Keene was kind enough to field a few questions from Bloody Disgusting to fill in fans and readers on what’s coming up next.

Things got personal at Cannes Market’s Fantastic 7 showcase this year, highlighting upcoming genre projects selected by seven festivals including Spain’s Sitges, Bucheon in South Korea, Cairo, Guadalajara in Mexico, SXSW and Toronto, as well as Whanau Marama New Zealand Intl. Film Festival.
“I think it’s my most personal film ever,” said director Jaume Balagueró, also behind “[Rec],” co-directed with Paco Plaza.
In his latest film “Venus,” presented by Sitges, he will combine elements of survival drama and modern witchery. Starring Ester Expósito, it’s produced by Álex de la Iglesia and Carolina Bang.
“Why? Because it combines many elements I am personally interested in,” he told Variety.
“It’s a horror, but it’s also a very moving film about love and revenge. It’s very special to me.”

With the worst ratings in years plaguing the show’s overnight figures and fans criticizing showrunner Chris Chibnall’s take on the series, the BBC’s Doctor Who is currently in a bad spot.
The long-running sci-fi program came back this year with Jodie Whittaker’s second run as the first female Doctor. But in spite of an overhaul in the show’s production values and many unexpected twists in the narrative, fans are not happy with how Chibnall is handling things. While some criticize this season for suddenly becoming too politically charged, many just don’t appreciate the new stories and their resolutions.
Suffice it to say, if this negative backlash continues to grow, Chibnall’s tenure as the executive producer will be short-lived. Though considering the fact that he doesn’t care about reviews, and Jodie already confirming she’ll return for another season, the BBC might decide to not intervene after all.

The Marvel/Serial Box projects will feature characters like Thor, Black Panther, Black Widow, and Jessica Jones.

The first project to come out of the team-up will feature Thor, and is set to debut summer 2019. The Thor story features a writing team led by screenwriter Aaron Stewart-Ahn (Mandy) and includes Brian Keene (The Horror Show with Brian Keene), Jay Edidin (Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-Men), and Yoon Ha Lee (Ninefox Gambit). Serial Box, the premium digital-book platform, is partnering with Marvel Entertainment to create new original stories for Black Panther, Thor, Black Widow, and Jessica Jones that will be produced by TV-style writers’ rooms, serialized in both written and audio form, and released weekly as episodes that fit the average American commute.
Thor, the mighty Asgardian thunder god, will be the first of the four Marvel projects. Serial Box this morning also announced that Aaron Stewart, who co-wrote the recent cult hit Mandy, will lead the Thor writing team of Brian Keene, Jay Edidin, and Yoon Ha Lee.
Serial Box’s “publishing studio” approach was the brainchild of Molly Barton, the former global digital director for Penguin Random House who launched Serial Box in 2015. Stories are told in “seasons” (usually about a dozen episodes) that are sold in advance for $18 or week-by-week for $1.59 per episode.

Lurking within pages, displayed on the big and small screens, and at home on the airwaves, the horror genre thrived last year. 2016 was packed with great genre offerings, and although it's difficult to filter through the creepy contents of such a banner year for the genre, I forced myself to choose the moments that stuck with me the most... and still haunt my nightmares.

Back in 2013, I wrote a Last Horror Blog entry chronicling some great novels that Hollywood should consider bringing to the screen. Of course, with centuries of material to choose from, that list was only going to scratch the surface of all the titles worthy of making the transition from the page to the multiplex. So, I’m back with another batch of books that would make fantastic fright flicks. Hollywood will probably never get around to doing these books justice, but at the very least you’ll come away from this column with a bunch of great stories to read. Terminal by Brian Keene Author Brian Keene made my previous list with his zombie novel The Rising, but truth be told, almost everything Keene writes could be turned into a film (and one of his books, Ghoul...

After being introduced to Dana Fredsti’s take on the zombie apocalypse last year in the form of Plague Town and Plague Nation (read my review here), I’ve been looking forward to the concluding part of the trilogy and I’m happy to report that I haven’t been disappointed.
Picking up right where Plague Nation left off, our heroine Ashley Parker is plunged straight into a battle with the undead, Fredsti launching into her trademark breakneck pace that doesn’t let up until the end of the book. As the title suggests, the zombie plague has progressed from its initial outbreak in Redwood Grove (a la Racoon City), via the whole of America, and now to the rest of the world, having finally gone airborne.

Hungry wild animals, raging wildfires, dangerous marauders, and hanging over everything: a zombie outbreak ready to make a full-force comeback. These are the obstacles facing a small band of survivors making a cross-country road trip in author Brian Keene’s comic book series The Last Zombie. Their hellish road trip makes the Griswold family’s cross-country trek to Walley World look like a leisurely Sunday drive. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, the complete series run of The Last Zombie is now available in one massive trade paperback.

If you haven't yet seen The Devil's Rock, a WWII-based horror film that marked the feature debut for New Zealand director and Weta Workshop special effects artist Paul Campion, you've missed a dark, gruesome and intense tale that feels like it's torn straight from the pages of the classic horror comics... although it's actually based in part on historic events, along with some chilling occult lore. Here's the trailer: I was introduced to Campion recently (by Bane of Yoto author Josh Viola), and I found out he's got tons more amazing horror projects in the pipe – most notably a feature adaptation of Brian Keene's acclaimed horror novel Dark Hollow. Naturally, I had to learn more about that, as well as Paul's amazing short films, and he graciously offered us the scoop. Fearnet: For those who haven't yet seen The Devil's Rock, can you explain the genesis of that project?...

Johnathan|Christian, the haunting new transatlantic project from American composer Johnathan Mooney (The New Creatures) and Swedish dark-rocker Christian Granquist (The Atom) have produced not one but two impressive debuts: the full-length album Beautiful Hideous arrived late last year, earning major props across the gothic, industrial, darkwave and other alternative music press; the band followed up that success this month with a remix of the single “I Walk This Earth Alone,” featuring the talents of Danish industrial music legend Leæther Strip (a.k.a. Clause Larsen), and the two records combined represent some the best of old and new gothic rock/darkwave styles, strongly reminiscent of early death-rock legends Christian Death and '80s goth icons Sisters of Mercy, but with a modern production sheen. The band's songwriting doesn't seem to be designed with the dance floor in mind, but rather as a kind of dream soundtrack to an extremely...

This is going to be less of a review and more of a cautionary tale. I thought I knew what I was getting into when I started reading Sixty-Five Stirrup Iron Road. It is, after all, a collaboration of nine of the hardest-hitting horror authors working in the genre today: Brian Keene, Jack Ketchum, Edward Lee, J.F. Gonzalez, Bryan Smith, Wrath James White, Nate Southard, Ryan Harding and Shane McKenzie. These are not guys known for their restraint, and when you bring them all together between the same two covers, well, let’s just say the game of one-upsmanship is taken to a whole different level. I was not prepared for some of the things I read in this book. Clearly I’m no prude (I doubt I’d be writing for Fearnet if that were the case). I’ve pounded down more than my share of horror novels.

I detailed the story behind the publication of the Mister October tribute anthologies in my review of Volume I last week; go here to read the long version. The short version is that respected/revered horror author Rick Hautala passed away unexpectedly earlier this year, and his friend and fellow writer Christopher Golden worked fast to assemble this anthology that would stand as a tribute to Hautala and as a means of providing some much-needed financial assistance to the Hautala family. Volume I was packed to the rafters with top-shelf genre talent, but the response to Golden's call for submissions was so strong that he was able to build a second, equally stacked volume to accompany it. Volume II boasts names like Clive Barker, Jack Ketchum, Brian Keene, John Skipp, Sarah Pinborough, Peter Straub and Tim Lebbon, as well as work by Hautala's wife, Holly Newstein, Golden, and Rick Hautala himself.

Shudder in fear at this week's horror-themed crowdfunding projects, which includes a new film from Re-Animator director Stuart Gordon...
The nights are drawing in, and we've packed away our flip-flops and inflatable dolphins for another year. And as the autumn approaches, it's only right that we light a few candles, dust off our Mr James collections, and begin to consider the chillier, supernatural side of geek culture.
That's our excuse for this week's collection of crowdfunding curiosities, which includes a film project from a true master of the horror genre, and three other film and web series campaigns, which all have ideas to alternately provoke laughter and shivers of fear...
Nevermore
For many of us, Stuart Gordon will need no introduction. The director whose febrile genius brought such classic films as Re-Animator, From Beyond and Fortress to life, his work is distinguished by its gruesome gore and jet-black comedy.

In four short years, JournalStone Publishing has positioned itself as an attractive home to established authors and new talents alike. With a depth chart that includes Jonathan Maberry, Rick Hautala, Lisa Morton and Christopher Golden, and a deep catalog of horror, science fiction and fantasy novels and anthologies – not to mention an acclaimed quarterly magazine and a prominent genre website – I’d be shocked if you haven’t happened across this imprint already. But just in case you haven’t, consider this your formal introduction. JournalStone was founded in 2009 in San Francisco by Christopher Payne. It started out as a blog before transitioning into a publishing company the following year. JournalStone followed the unconventional route of building its initial slate via a novel writing contest. The first winner, That Which Shall Not Be by Brett J. Talley, was nominated by the Horror Writers Association in the “Superior Achievement in a...

“Ever been to a big college town on a football Saturday night?” is the tagline for Bill Braddock’s debut, Brew... and what a debut it is. The novel begins on such a night, when the parties spill onto the streets and the game is little more than an excuse to drink and make a memory, until all hell breaks loose. Brew follows a cast that includes a drug dealer and his girlfriend, a veteran recently returned from Afghanistan, an amateur pornographer, and a psychopath chemist named Herbert Weston, who has sabotaged the town’s favorite micro-brew "Cougar Piss" with a drug he calls “Phineas Gage and the Amygdala Hijack Express!” which turns those who drink it into mindless, sex-crazed cannibals. What follows is a non-stop onslaught of graphic horror and action. Braddock’s novel owes more than a small debt to the writing of Richard Laymon (acknowledged subtly throughout...

Dead Souls is definitely the perfect example of a movie in which each member of the audience takes away from it what they personally want based upon their individual worldview. I found it to be a warning against mixing the occult and Christianity together or using dark arts to gain your own desires. However, Writer Michael Laimo looks at it as a cautionary tale for those who embrace religious beliefs at face value without questioning them.
My interview with Laimo reminds me of one of my first writing jobs. I interviewed musicians about their new albums for a Christian rock magazine. Every issue featured an interview with a mainstream rock star about his personal religious beliefs. I don't share Laimo's views on Christianity, but respect where he's coming from and celebrate the fact that he even gives thought to spiritual and supernatural matters.
Give us a brief synopsis of Dead Souls...

As regular Shadowlocked readers will know I’m a major fan of all things zombie, and have watched, read, played and written about more z-related things than is possible healthy for one person, but like the walking dead themselves, I’m always hungry for more.
In terms of zombie literature, I think it’s fair to say that the shelves are positively groaning with hordes of undead adventures, and that for every masterpiece like Max Brooks’s World War Z, Brian Keene’s The Rising, David Wellington’s Monster trilogy or David Moody’s Autumn series there are a horde of pale imitations that leave a taste in the mouth not unlike Boomer bile.
Thankfully Dana Fredsti’s Plague Nation is way up the z-scale in terms of enjoyment and is a welcome addition to the party. Upon receiving Plague Nation and its predecessor Plague Town I was initially fearful...

First it was summoned, now it demands to be satisfied. Today trailer is for a new indie horror from the UK called Dark Hollow, the next film from the creator of last year's horror The Devil's Rock. Adapted from author Brian Keene's Dark Hollow, the horror film is about a writer who discovers an "unholy evil dwelling deep in the forest: a satyr - a supernatural half-man, half goat creature, hellbent on protecting itself and spreading it's seed." Director Paul Campion used to work at Weta, and he got them to help work on the creature effects for this film, which there's a very brief hint of in this teaser trailer (via Twitch). Take a look! Watch the first teaser trailer for Paul Campion's Dark Hollow, originally from Bloody-Disgusting: Set in a small Central Pennsylvania town that borders a woodland with a sinister reputation, Dark Hollow sees women beginning to disappear.

First it was summoned. Now, it demands to be satisfied! Wow, this really looks awesome! We have the first trailer (read – teaser trailer) for Paul Campion‘s upcoming horror movie titled Dark Hollow, and trust me guys, this is definitely worth your full attention! First reason: the whole thing is based on Brian Keene‘s novel of the same name. And that’s probably enough. You know, it’s like I say – something very strange is happening in LeHorn’s Hollow, and you say – ok, we got the point!
So, let us share some official stuff with you! The most important thing is that Paul Campion, man who stands behind The Devil’s Rock movie is in charge for the whole thing, and that he will direct from a script which he co-wrote with Paul Finch.
At this moment not much is know about the movie cast except that Shane Rangi...

A ravenous ghoul terrorizes a cast member of “Modern Family”. A Twilight wolfman and his real-life sister go hunting for supernatural evil. Younger horror fans get to start the new year off with Ghoul and Hansel & Gretel: Warriors of Witchcraft on DVD.
Who would have ever thought Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters would inspire so many b-movie knock-offs? Sure, we’re only talking two, but that’s still two more than I would have expected.
While The Asylum’s Hansel & Gretel name-only mockbuster takes a more modern horror approach, Lionsgate has one that looks to be more of a tweener-friendly version of the R-rated big screen version. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, allow me to introduce you to Hansel & Gretel: Warriors of Witchcraft.
Jonah And Ella Mazer (Hansel and Gretel) were happy, normal teenagers–sent to an elite boarding school. The Headmaster, Sebastian, seems to know more about the brother and sister than they know about themselves.

The rest of the ensemble cast includes Larry Fessenden (Stake Land, I Sell The Dead) and Sean Young (Blade Runner, Wall Street) playing husband and wife as Ada's parents and Graham Patrick Martin ("Two and a Half Men", Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door) playing Ada's brother, Jessaby. Writer/Director Chad Crawford Kinkle will be helmer and Cinematographer Chris Heinrich will be shooting. Producers are Andrew van den Houten and Robert Tonino(Brian Keene's Ghoul/The Woman) for MODERNCINÉ. Kinkle's original script for the film won Slamdance's screenplay competition last year.
